Re: [JAWS-Users] Help with windows messenger.

2009-04-07 Thread Chrissy
Unless you are running the very latest version of jaws I would not recommend
an upgrade of messenger. version 9 of windows live is not accessible to
anyone using anything lower than jaws 10 with latest upgrades. I learned the
hard way and was glad to be able to find a way to undo this installment.
If you do accidently get 'tricked' into having to install the new messenger,
you can revert back to a working previous version, by first uninstalling
anything related to the new messenger and then installing windows live
messenger 8.1.

it doesn't tell me anything, and jaws doesn't work. Thanks in advance.

in that case just follow the upgrade instructions. I think a window opens
when you are invited to upgrade.

just install the software, it will automatically install over your old one.

2009-04-07 Thread Chrissy
I think everytime you log into your current version there should be
something that will offer this upgrade popping up.
As chris suggested in his post you can also directly go to windows live
messenger website and download from there.
same procedure, just download, let the installer set up everything for you,
just follow the instructions it gives and it will install over the current
version.

Most of these file sending sites work pretty good but some do have, just

If you want to permanently change a setting, it should be changed in
Configuration Manager. I know FS is not always consistent about this
difference and I have no idea why it works on one PC and not another. To
permanently change the echo setting do the following while in Outlook
Express:

1. Press the JAWS + 6 (in the number row) to open Configuration Manager.

2. Press Alt + s to open the Set options menu.

3. Press the down arrow or the u key for User options.

4. Press Tab several times until you hear typing echo. Press up or
down arrows until you hear characters and words radio button.

5. Press Tab until you get to the Ok button and press the space bar.

6. Press Control + s to save the new settings and then Alt + F4 to close
Configuration Manager.

   Chrissy,
Is your message pane turned on? If Jaws is saying space like that, it
probably means that it isn't focused on where the cursor is currently
located.
- Try going into your View section and making sure that the Message
Pane is turned off.

That gives Jaws real fits if it's on.

I am mailing from germany and they tell you to contact your

yes I did but still has not changed. Tonite I have a sighted friend coming
to visit and will ask her exactly to describe what is going on on the
screen. she does not know anything about jaws but maybe then I will do
better describing what exactly is going on while jaws does this 'space'
reading thing.

ok for whatever it's worth,...like I was sure no virus or anything. it was a
stupid verbosity setting with typing echo that somehow got changed around.
working fine now, i compared all the settings for verbosity on both the pc
and my netbook and bingo!
gee, thanks again to everyone for their time and suggestions. I am a happy

Re: [JAWS-Users] outlook express problems, replying or writing a mail

2009-03-08 Thread Chrissy

hi all,
whenever i reply to a mail, jaws will not do any reading at all. the only
thing that works is jaws will spell out what i type but that's about it.
I cannot quote from mails or mark text as i do not hear anything out of jaws
anymore. also when i do try and write a mail, jaws will not take any
commands for reading the text or words etc back to me.
I have not changed any settings, all worked well up until this morning. i
have tried to reboot, have unhooked the braille display, rehooked it etc. as
i thought maybe something interfers, nothing works.
received mails jaws will read though, webpages work as well but as far as me
writing a mail, nothing.
please advise, thanks in advance.
p.s. my computer is absolutely virus and trojan free. someone suggested that
might be the cause, but the system is perfectly clean and check throughly.

2009-03-08 Thread Chrissy
ok, thanks. that makes sense now to remove the virus before a restore,
otherwise you'll get it right back.
no, no virus, all checked computer behaves normal, jaws does too, except for
this issue when inside reply or writing email.
my guess is that i simply messed up something in the configuration but i
have no clue what or how that happened. i rechecked all verbosity in outlook
and jaws in general.no clue. oh well maybe someone will see this here and
maybe have some suggestions what i could try still.

Going to what I told you before, I forgot I did delete the file that
carried the virus before I ran the restore. Alternately, you can try to
repair your Jaws in case it is the program. You can do that by hitting
the installation, and you'll get to the selection where it'll ask you, if
you want to modify, repair, or I think reinstall. Just hit the repair. I
still think it is a virus.

   Chrissy,
Is your message pane turned on? If Jaws is saying space like that, it
probably means that it isn't focused on where the cursor is currently
located.
- Try going into your View section and making sure that the Message
Pane is turned off.

That gives Jaws real fits if it's on.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about Spybot and Jaws

2009-02-07 Thread Chrissy

Hi josh,
I have used spybot for quite some time and found it to be working pretty
good for me.
When you install there is an option for blind users that simplifies some of
the operations so that it is more accsessible.I do not use the real time tee
timer protection option (you can unselect this when installing and I
recommend to do so). Instead I manually run the programm about once a week
to do the updates and scan.

Re: [JAWS-Users] starting pc and hard drive

2009-02-04 Thread Chrissy
Like tim said, the boot order may have to be changed. which requires going
into the bios.it should actually be set to start from cd first. This setting
is recommended so that one can always start windows from cd whenever the
windows version installed should be faulty.when the computer boots it
automatically goes thru the specified booting order.
i would disconnect the external HD anyways whenever not in use. connect it
after booting is finished.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS and the brilliant braille display

2009-01-31 Thread Chrissy
you go into options and then find the menue with braille display. there is
an option to 'add braille display'. there you look for your particular model
and check it, then you have to click ok and jaws should then automatically
integrate the display. i use a pac mate 40 disply and mine was on the list
and it worked without any problems. if i remember correctly, with mine the
installation assistant came on and then it installed the braille driver
right from the jaws folder. you have to restart jaws/PC once, after you are
done I believe.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS short cut

2009-01-28 Thread Chrissy
Go to the jaws 10 icon hit the appliction key. then go into the properties
section there hit that and tag down until you get to the key shortcut entry.
then put in the one you want to start jaws with and do om and close.
this should make sure that the new one comes up. still do not have both
desktop icons on the desktop, just the new one.

try that and see if that helps

I will go look for the flash player I guess. Maybe I could just do a

Re: [JAWS-Users] xp and jaws, strange message

2009-01-18 Thread Chrissy

hi tim,
I guess I am getting more confused by the hour here.
So far the only place that would show my graphics card, that I have found
would be in 'hardware' and then 'device manager'. In there it just says the
card and driver are working fine.
do you know what exactly needs to be changed in there to let the jaws driver
take over or whatever else is neccasary to stop this message from popping
up?
Also, jaws itself still seems to work ok except for this nagging message
window all the time. is there a way I can just keep it from popping up?
maybe disable error messages in jaws somewhere or similar?

thanks for your time and trying to help, greatly appreciated.

I also just checked in programs jaws inside the display chaining manager.
there it says that the jaws video intercept is installed and under 'primary'
someone suggested also that i remove the wdm driver that came with my

Re: [JAWS-Users] xp and jaws, strange message

2009-01-16 Thread Chrissy

hi list,
hopefully someone can help me with this issue.
I have a clean install of windows xp on my desktop and instaled jaws
yesterday.

I have told it to run on start up, so far so good.
now when the pc boots up and jaws kicks in i always get this message that
says that nvdia is my first graphics card and that jaws driver is installed.
also it also gives the driver name and underneath it says something about
true when active and fals when inactive.
then it has the options to reinstall the driver or to uninstall. when i know
just tab twice and then enter it closes this message and i can start working
with jaws, no problem.
now i should be happy that the reader is working fine but to have to tabb
and close this message down whenever i boot, is somewhat annoying. is there
any way to not have this message come up every time? i have also tried to
use the reinstall option and restarted jaws but i just get the info that the
driver is already installed.
is there anything i need to do to my graphics card to prevent this from
showing every time?

thanks in advance for any hints on this.

chrissy

Re: [JAWS-Users] How to delete Quick Time?

2008-12-28 Thread Chrissy
of course you can remove it, you can remove any program if you so
desire. i was merely pointing out that there is no need to do so.
quicktime is neither spyware nor a something that you need to get rid
of, simply because it is there.
as was pointed out earlier also it is for example part of the itunes
installation so I would consider what programs depend on the presence of
QT before I just go and remove stuff and then complain about programs
not working.
and yes it does come installed on some computers depending on what
programs come installed wih it. I am aware of that since I have built
more than one computer from scratch.
if the icon in system tray bothers there is always the option to not
have it show at all, without fully removing the program.

It also comes pre-installed on some brands of windows computer, which it
quite obviously didn't in the case being discussed. he was wanting to know
how to remove the program, and add/remove was not working. Furthermore,
youcan have the program installed, not showing on start-up in msconfig, and
running in the system Tray. i have it thus. Fortunately, as it is a
registered program on this computer, I can remove it if I should choose.

why uninstall? ouicktime is needed for example to play certain files.it
never installs itself automatically, so at one point you must have

you can prevent it from loading with every start up by disabling it via

Re: [JAWS-Users] I need help with avast please?

2008-12-09 Thread Chrissy

hi kimber,
avast always announces an update with speech. It will say 'your virus
database has been updated' or something along that line.
that is one of the things I like about avast, that it has that feature
so you can actually hear when an update takes place.

hi kimber
since the avast version you downloaded my be the current version all
available updates may have already come with it. so it may be a while
for the next update (it usually updatesdaily) before the next one takes
place. or you may have just missed the announcement, while you stepped

Re: [JAWS-Users] anti spy ware?

2008-12-09 Thread Chrissy
i use all free programs never a problem. Just cause it does not cost
does not mean it is bad.
on the contrary some paid programs are not advised, like norton who
seriously messes with your system and is a resource hog.

For me I find the best all around protection is as follows:
1 AVAST Virus detection. It does not use a lot of resources, has
announced updates, detection files packages, therefore updates real fast.
does not slow the pc while it does and has very good protection for
email clients and so forth already coming with it.FREE
2 Spybot search and destroy. Again a very reliable program. does not use
a single byte of ram unless you run it with tea timer. very good
protection against spy ware.
To anyone saying it slows your system, do NOT install the realtime
protection tea timer. instead just run the program on a regular basis to
hunt for intruders. That is the only time it will use any resources then.FREE
3 Windows Firewall. Comes with your OS and is all you really for
firewall if you are a home pc user. does the job well.

So there you have it. If you have a modern pc you can run windows
defender also, since it is integrated with vista but I personally would
not go out of my way to go out the site to download if you are not a
vista user.

Also on a regular pc I would recommend at least 1 gig of ram. if you are
running less, then defender and stuff will make your system slower,
because let's face it the times where 512 of ram was state of the art
are long gone and programs are getting better all the time but the cost
is they need a bit more power to do their job good, especially if you
are running more than one application at a time. ram is cheap so upgrade
when you get a chance.

[JAWS-Users] afterthought to spyware posting

2008-12-09 Thread Chrissy

last but not least use common sense.
do not open lonks on sites that pop up claiming that they can search
your pc for attackers. those are phishing sites that will install
trojans. instead to do online scanning use kaspersy, pcillin and the
like. those are the legit sites to use.
be aware of the sites you surfe into, be on the lookout if your pc
behaves strangely after a visit.

watch what mails you open, check attachments BEFORE you open them!

all this...FREE and works well with jaws too :)

well this is the only desktop pc we have now. I still have my old laptop

to buy an additional desktop pc is not workable moneywise

Re: [JAWS-Users] more questions

2008-11-29 Thread Chrissy

hi karen
the beeps is the bios when the pc loads up. I hope we are talking about the
same ones here. would have to hear them. but my laptop does 2 short and one
long beep, means all has loaded correctly as far as the core stuff. if they
ever change in lenght or otherwise then that indicates that there is
something fishy. I used to have a list even that listed what beep is for
what and the erro stuff and so forth.
as far as jwas...have you made sure to tell it to load on start up? if not
you need to set this up in jaws basic options menu.
also to load jaws whenever it is for some reason not loading or you need to
disabel it for something temporarly xou can assign a short cut keycommand.
to do that go on your desktop and find the jaws icon, use the applications
key and find 'properties' in the menu. then tab to key shortcut and use
whichever key. best to use j so it does not interfer with one alraedy in
use.

order groceries eaasily, i can play games, read books, listen to music and
talk to people all over the world via messenger and email, all with just a

[JAWS-Users] installing new jaws script for skype

2008-09-08 Thread Chrissy
hi list,
I would like to update my skype scripts and want install the new script 653.
I already have an older version of this script installed.
My question is, do I have to uninstall the old script or can I just install
'over' the old one already there?
Also I recompiled and renamed this file for skype watch as well as the whole
process to get skype watch to work, as described on the script page. now
after i update to the new 653 do I do the entire process again, i.e.
recompile all again, or will this be untouched by any upgrades?
i know both are seperate things, just curious if I need to repeat any steps
after installing.

thanks in advance

hi dale
you have to go into the skype options menue and tab down to advanced
settings. therre you will find the hotkey settings. mark the box to enable
this function. it is disabled by default, so you do need to make sure the
box is checked.
you can now use the alt+page up and down to either initiate a call or hang

Hi dale,
that would be also located in the options menue, in the general settings.
there you will find the box to mark to, upon clicking on a contact, either
make a call or open the chat window.

about your problems with the hotkeys. are you sure you press alt AND page up
/Down. it is not the arrow keys.
Not trying to be smart or anything, but when I was first told abouzt hotke
options I made the exact mistake and used arrow up and down by mistake.

other than that it should work fine, with the instructions, unless your
hotkey functions themselves are disabled on your keyboard or something.

The messenger plus is an add on to windows live messenger, not a stand alone
messenger and not an official add on though.
I have it installed and it does automatically read the text messages as they
come in. Also it will announce 'so and so ist typing a message', and this is
accompanied with some ticking sounds.

the one I am talking about gives you extra features, like being able to
change the name of a contact yourself and so forth.
this is the one I am talking about, maybe the scripts go by the same name
then.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Best messenger programs

2008-08-14 Thread Chrissy
Hi mark
I think what he was maybe referring to is the registration process for a
yahoo id to be able to have that for messenger.
I think they now started using the darn captchas for that. I have hab mine
for a long time, so was able to do this without the captcha hurdle.

Wesley, what you are, and have been, apparently referring to is Yahoo
 chat.
This is different from Yahoo Messenger. First, Yahoo Messenger does not
have any captchas at all, and secondly, apparently no one on this list
 uses
 Yahoo Chat.

2008-08-14 Thread Chrissy
Hi chris
I think we missunderstoof each other.
I realize that jaws brings the scripts alraedy with it. the way I
understoodd you was that you said in addiotion there is something called
PLUS and the only plus I know is this website that makes windows messenger
plus, the one I was taling about in my earlier post.
That one just enhances , for lack of a better word, the messaging experience
as it allows you to alter many features and adds some too.
of course messenger works just as good without them, with the already
included scripts in jaws. I think we got it now :9

No Chrissie. Messenger Plus! Live supports scripting, but it has nothing
 to
do with JAWS. As I said previously, JAWS comes with scripts for Windows
 Live
Messenger, and it is them that's allowing you to fully interact with the
 programme. Hope this helps.

Hi all
I seriously doubt, that even if you managed to get into the chatroom, that
it would be usable.
Unless it is an IRC chat or something, most times they are webbased chats
that will not be read by screenreaders or announce new messages.
if you are on the regular messenher though you can for example invite
several people into 'your' chatwindow and have a conference.People would
have to have you in their contact list and vice versa for that though.

Re: [JAWS-Users] firefox 2.0 and problems with FF 3.0

2008-07-31 Thread Chrissy
Yes it works perfect, I am using it with 7.10 without problems.
On the other hand, I have tried instaaling firefox 3 twice now, because
everyone said it was great and I wanted to also try webvisum.
Problem is FF3 cloeses every 2 to 3 clicks. It just quits all the time. So I
looked for my old copy of FF, deleted my old FF profile and did another one
and it works again as before.
Does FF3 only work for users able to afford the upgrade to jaws 9? seems
that those folks are the ones mostly praising version 3.

Any info on solutions for my problems with 3 appreciated.

And in any list with computer issues you will have all kinds of ppl some

thanks so much for the links. I have read that you can use it on a windows

does not say anything about blind users and screenreadersin their accessible

Re: [JAWS-Users] ) Lynx browser with jaws

2008-06-18 Thread Chrissy
hi again
the problem is not the navigating itself as far as getting the browser to do
what it is supposed to. the problem is that so far the only thing jaws will
say is if it comes across a link in a site.
in other words jaws remains silent unless it is a link to read. i have tried
this on two sites that i am very familiar with so i know that there should
be text and stuff also on there.

hm, i don't know I guess I go back to the regular browser. the lynx I
thought might help a bit with navigating the sites that are not very
accessible.

[JAWS-Users] JAWS-Users] answering in messageboards with jaws

2008-05-16 Thread Chrissy
Hi
i am in a bunch of messageboards that are not blind ralated or anything so
they are not the most accessible forums in the world. still i can read there
fairly well, helping myself juggling bewtween jaws and pc cursor.
only thing is that I do not seem to be able to answer to postings there.
i tried jaws cursor to get into the frame thing, where the answer goes, but
then i do not hear anything about being able to turn forms on to write.
the odd thing is sometimes it will take my typing, other times not. have not
found the pattern, when this happens.
is there anyone who may have some tipps for me. I even tried webformator
with jaws and while it will do the regular stuff it will not let me answer

Corey, you have to go to their site and email them and ask for a license
key. They are very good in sending it and telling you what to do.
 There's
no graphical box, but they do give you a 60 day trial.

Let me know how you make out.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and Phonenumbers

2008-05-07 Thread Chrissy
Hi all,
how do I get jaws to say the digits individually and not for example as
'fourtythousandthreehundredseventy', because I cannot follow this and
remember a number that way to dial it.
In my own addressbook I kind of try and bypass this by seperating groups of
three digits togeter and seperate them by 2 spaces. that way I can remember
better.
I have looked in verbosity but found nothing for thisproblem so far.

thanks in advance,
chrissy

It is in text processing, and it's called number processing, and I think
 you
need to set it to single digits.

 Hi Chrissy,

Follow these directions below from the jaws-users website and these steps
should get everything straightened out. Good luck.

 Mike

 Windows XP and JAWS

This topic discusses settings changes we recommend you make when using
 JAWS
in Windows XP Home or Professional. You must be logged in with
administrative rights to make several of these changes. Many of these
settings are changed within Control Panel. To open Control Panel, press
 the
WINDOWS KEY to open the Start Menu, move to Control Panel, and press
 ENTER.

Depending on your system settings, Control Panel either opens in a
 separate
window, or the Control Panel items open as a sub-menu. We recommend making
 changes in the following areas:

 List of 5 items
 Display Properties
 Folder Options
 Start Menu
 Windows Explorer System Performance
 list end

 Display Properties
 List of 9 items
 1. From the Control Panel, move to Display and press Enter.
 2. From the themes combo box, select Windows XP.
 3. In the List of backgrounds on the Desktop page, choose Bliss.
 4. Set Position to Stretch.
 5. In the Screen Saver combo box on the Screen Saver page, press HOME to
 select none.
 6. On the Appearance page, set Windows and Buttons to Windows classic
 style.
 7. Set Color Scheme to Windows Standard.
 8. Set Font to normal.
 9. Close the dialog.
 list end
Note: After making these changes, the Display page Themes combo box says
 Modified Theme. Folder Options

 List of 5 items
 1. From the Control Panel, press ALT+T to go to the Tools menu.
 2. Press O for Folder Options.
 3. From the Tasks radio button group, select Use Windows Classic folders.
 4. (Optional):

 List of 5 items

 nesting level 1
 A. On the View page, move to the Advanced Settings tree view.
 B. Clear the Hide Extensions For Known File Types check box.
 C. If you also use screen magnification software, clear the Show pop-up
description for folder and desktop items check box. Pop up descriptions
often hide the menu item just below any given menu item, making it
impossible to visually see the next item in the menu list.
 D. Move to the Apply to All Folders button and press SPACEBAR.
 E. Select Yes in the dialog that opens to acknowledge this change.
 5. Move to the OK button in the Folder Options dialog box and press
 SPACEBAR
 to close this dialog box.

 Start Menu

 List of 6 items
 1. From Control Panel, Move to Taskbar and Start menu and press ENTER.
 2. From the Taskbar page, press ALT+G to move to and uncheck Group Similar
 Taskbar Buttons.
 3. Press ALT+H to move to and uncheck the check box for Hide inactive
 icons.
 4. Press CTRL+TAB to move to the Start Menu page.
 5. Select Classic start menu.
 6. Press ENTER to close this dialog box.
 list end

 Windows Explorer

 List of 10 items
 1. Press WINDOWS KEY+E to open Windows Explorer.
 2. Press ALT+V to open the View menu.
 3. Select Arrange Icons by and press ENTER to open the submenu.
 4. Move to the menu item Name to arrange by Name, and Press ENTER to
select this and close the menus.
 5. Repeat steps 2 and 3, and move to the item Show in Groups. If it is
checked, press ENTER to uncheck it and close the menus.
 6. Press ALT+T to open the Tools menu.
 7. Press O to open the Folder Options Dialog.
 8. Press CTRL+TAB to move to the View page.
 9. Press SPACEBAR to activate the Apply to all folders button, and press
SPACEBAR on the YES button to acknowledge this change.
 10. Move to the OK button and press SPACEBAR to close this dialog box.
 list end

 System Performance

List of 6 items (contains 1 nested list)
 1. From the Control Panel, move to System and press ENTER to open the
 System
 Properties Dialog.
 2. Press CTRL+TAB to move to the Advanced page.
 3. Press ALT+S to activate the Performance Settings button. The
 Performance
 Options Dialog opens.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows Standard in XP

2008-04-09 Thread Chrissy
Hi,
I am forever trying to set my design options for xp to the windows standard,
to make it best for jaws.
I got into the menues there and set everything accordingly, I save this but
after a couple of reboots it goes back to the xp screen partially.
I would have not noticed buta sighted friend asked me about this. Like I
said it is not really bothering me that much other than I would like to know
why windows seems to not like my settings as I am afraid it will cause
problems later sometime to not have the right settings that work best.

thanks in advance for any hints,

greetings
chrissy

Re: [JAWS-Users] Grphic card problem w/ jaws 7.10

2008-04-04 Thread Chrissy
Hi all,
i just reinstalled ( clean install on a formatted HD) Windows XP home and my
screenreader, jaws 7.10.
Now I am getting told when jaws boots that I have a graphicdriver problem .
it leaves me with three options, to either view details which won't work or
to install the driver, which does not work either.
the last option is to unistall videodrivers, which I have no clue as what to
do, because uninstalling would leave my pc and jaws not running.

I have a ATI Radeon card, i think it is a 1800xt or something like that. it
is one that was already oin there, when I bought the PC some years ago.

Maybe someone can help solve the mystery and get my jaws to work, right now
i have sighted help here to try and fix this for me, but so far no luck.
thanks in advance.

greetz,
chrissy
