[JAWS-Users] Problem With Winamp

2017-05-15 Thread Lynn White
I have a friend who is finding that the volume in Winamp is very low.
The upper arrow control to increase volume doesn't do the trick.

She has looked at her sound volume and it is where it should be. Any
ideas? Thanks.

Hello all-

I remember that some of you have been in touch with Malware bytes about
accessibility issues with their latest version. Is there any progress to
report and are you able to work with their latest?

The last time I called the Microsoft accessibility line they ran a virus
scan on my computer. In the past they used Malware bytes but this last time
they used Hitmanpro. Any thoughts about Hitman would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Wayne

There's a few ways to fix this.

Regarding your hidden desktop, if you press alt+B, this is a Windows
shortcut to take you to the system tray where you find the time and
all the

programs running on your computer in the background.

Tabbing once from this point will take you to a button.

Not sure what it'll say for you, but mine says "Show Desktop" and
pressing

enter on this button takes me directly to the desktop.

I'm also curious as to what happens when you press the Windows hotkey of
Windows+the letter M, or Windows+the letter D. Both of these keystrokes
should take you to the desktop.

Regarding your sideways desktop or view, as you heard from someone else,
there's a shortcut key which is control+the arrow keys to rotate your
screen, but you can also do this by going to your desktop and
de-selecting

anything that is currently highlighted by pressing control+spacebar.

Once you've done this, you can press your applications key or
shift+F10, and

arrow down to "Display settings" and press enter.

In the resulting dialog box, tab to the combo box that says "Orientation"
and press alt+down arrow to open the choices, then arrow up to
Landscape or
Portrait, depending on your preference. Tab to the apply button and
press

enter.

Once you're done, just alt+F4 out of that window.

Previous editions of Windows used to have the rotation option right in
the

first context menu, so you could make the changes that way, but alas,
Windows has done away with this option.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
KNFB can be use with a camera or scanner on a Windows pc running W10. So if
you have the KNFB app open on your pc and hold a Piece of paper about 12 to
15 inches away from the camera and push the field of view report it will
tell you if you have all four corner showing. Even if you don't it still
might scan ok. Then you have to push the take picture button then it will
come of reading for you. Of course you have to make sure the printed side of
the paper is towards the camera lens. You also have to have a camera. If you
do not have a camera you can use a flatbed scanner. Then you just put the
paper on the scanner and open up the KNFB app and tab until you hear scan
image or do a ctrl + T to start the scan. When it is done scanning it will
come up reading in a second or so.

When I get a document from this file sending service called Hightail, the
Word document is shown to be in protected view. This is happening to me on
two different machines.

The files are not protected. I sent the file I received to the individual
who sent it to me and they opened it and it was not a protected file that
they saw.

A friend of mine uses Thunderbird, it reads just fine. Any ideas?

For those new to Adobe Reader DC, try the settings changes below to see if
they help with its performance.

Note that there are links with the Security Enhanced section to explain the
consequences of
unchecking items there, and you may want to find out what they have to say.

1. Open Adobe Reader DC from your desktop or start menu icons, go into
preferences with control-k. JAWS lands on an item in a tree view.
If you have been here before, it will be the item you last opened. Arrow
down to Security Enhanced. Note that this is the item below "Security."
Then uncheck these 2 options, the 2nd option is not necessary to uncheck
but, optional:
Enable Protected Mode at startup, needs to be unchecked.

Enable Enhanced Security, does not need to be unchecked.
Note. When making changes in the Security Enhanced section, you will be told
that Adobe needs to be restarted, but you can wait to finish the other
changes first.

2. Launch the Edit menu, Alt + E, scroll down to the Accessibility submenu
and open
it. Scroll down to the Set-up Assistant and press enter. The Set-Up
Assistant has five screens, but the only change you have to make is on the
last, screen 5 of 5. Go through all the screens, pressing spacebar on "Next"
in each instance, until you reach the fifth and final screen. Here, tab to
the check box labeled "Display PDF documents in the web browser" and make
sure it
is unchecked. It may be checked by default. Then tab to the Okay button, &
press enter. You can now close the program & give it a try on a PDF file.

Take care.

Even though I listen to the podcast using my Victor stream, it is still
neat to be notified that there is a new podcast.

I will tell you what I thought was a humorous experience. I was doing
an internet show on The Global Voice and as I was beginning to introduce
the show, all of a sudden Jonathan's intro came up and there was
Jonathan for the world to hear.

It gave me a chance to explain one of the benefits of Jaws 17. Plus it
gave FS some free publicity.

First thing I did when updating JFW was to opt out of this podcast thing.
Reading people's experiences, I'm even more glad I did.
Nothing against the podcast per say, but I already subscribe via an app on my
iPhone and don't need another alert on my pC.
I understand that some people use their PC for podcast consumption, but if
it's true that the episode starts playing without any prompting, well, that

Lenny,
If he was running jaws 16, 17 or have openbook installed, That would never

Because the upgrade would only get to about 25% complete and you would have
to cancel the install, or continue and remove the FS programs.

I think others may have pointed out that if you have already bought Jaws

have bought 16.

What FS doesn't do is to outright sell an older version of any of its

Hi all,
I just wanted you to know that you can up grade to Windows 10 with JAWS
16.0.4350 or JAWS 16.0.4463. You do not have to wait until you receive JAWS
17 to up grade. I up graded with JAWS 16.0.4350 and the experience couldn't
have been better. You can use Narrator to do the last couple of steps and
JAWS will come back talking. When it does, just remember to uninstall JAWS
and Reinstall JAWS even if you upgraded from Windows 8.1. It makes things
work so much better in Win 10 if you do. Take care.

It appeared to me, when I purchased my new SMA for JAWS 18 and 19, and
upgraded to 17, that the disk would cost $10. I saw nothing to make me
believe that I would be receiving one by mail. I then talked to FS Sales, to

assuming that there will be no disk sentt.

Hello Gang:

I tried to upgrade an older Dell laptop to Windows 10, yesterday, through
the MS Accessibility Help Desk. But, was unsuccessful, because I had so many
Windows 7 updates to download and install. Still having to download some
today.

However, here is my point. While talking to one of the MS helpers, he told
me, "Well, Sir, you know that when we do the download for Windows 10, there
will be a time, when there is no connection with us, and sighted assistance
will be necessary." I replied, "Well, I understand at that point, I can turn
on the narrator and complete it without sighted assistance."

He said, "I don't think that is really the case. You need sighted
assistance."

Well, according to the notes from Jim Flusche, The narrator is totally
useable, after the 10 install. Or did I misunderstand Jim's instructions?

Two final questions:

1. Does FS send out CDs for the JAWS 17, for those of us with a SMA?

2. Would a CD be a good thing to have for starting a new Windows 10
computer, or can that be done via narrator, as well.

Thanks. Have a great Sunday!

Neil

If I may jump in here, this is the rub to me at least. Programs will work
the same since they are meant to operate on top of Windows no matter what
version is under the hood so to speak. So for example Gold Wave will work
the same on 10 as it does on 7 in my experience at least.

I'm willing to bet that iTunes will function the same.

Hi Scorpio,
Jaws will work OK, but not as well as it should, unless you install it
new

and fresh in w-10.
I speak from experience.
I have upgraded two w-7, and two w-8.1 computers, from beginning to end.
This includes customizing them as well.
The Start button, and search edit field, and the live tile region are
effected negatively, unless you reinstall Jaws.
I have assisted in many other upgrades.
Do not tell me I am wrong, Microsoft recommends, any users of Screen
reading

software, to uninstall and reinstall them.
So, if you want a smooth running w-10 computer with Jaws 16 or 17, you
should follow Microsoft recommendation.
Just helping people get the most out of w-10 with Jaws...
How much experience do you have in upgrading computers to w-10?
When I give out instructions, I try to give them out as if everyone
was on

their own with no sited help.
I have a great respect for those who are making it alone.
Each day is a challenge for all blind people, more so, when you are
alone.
So, I research my answers when I give a step by step guide, as if each
blind

person were doing the steps by themselves with no sited help.
This way hopefully, they will not have any problems.
So, again, its not a matter of being right about reinstalling Jaws,
it’s a

matter of getting max performance out of Jaws 16 and 17 on your w-10
computer.
Have a nice day...

No need to re-install Jaws 16 once the Windows 10 is complete, as it

The only accessible player I know of is from IRTI, and costs $29.95 via
download; $59.95 if you want them to ship you the install CD. Although you
can use it just fine with JAWS running, it has its own voice, and works best
in that mode, so when you bring up the program, it is best to put JAWS to
sleep by either exiting JAWS, or better yet, putting JAWS to sleep with the
insert key space bar, then s.

Here is the link to all the info. You will for sure want the instruction
manual, which IRTI can give you, also by download or email attachment.
I have the software, and it works just fine. It also gives you direct
access to picking the audio described track if one exists on the DVD.

[JAWS-Users] Windows Explorer Locks

2015-05-11 Thread Lynn White
Lately, when I have been using Jaws 16, when I got into something like
Drop Box, open a folder and arrow down, everything locks up.

It has become so bad that I have to use another screen reader. I would
rather use Jaws. But, it is just too frustrating to use Jaws.

I have read all kinds of reasons for why windows Explorer can lock up.
But there doesn't really seem to be a reasonable fix for this issue.

I hope that someone might be able to help solve this problem.

Thanks.

Either way, it's good to have this incredibly annoying bug squashed.

What's new in this release:

Enhancements in JAWS 16.0.2339 (April 2015)

The following is a list of improvements made between the JAWS 16 release on
April 9, 2015, and the April 29, 2015 update.

To download the latest release, visit the Downloads web page.

JAWS
.For customers who use JAWS 16 and MAGic 13 together, we resolved an issue
that was discovered in the previous update where MAGic's Mouse Echo feature
was not working as expected when JAWS 16 was running.
.Worked with Smarter Balance Testing group in order to make some adjustments
in how JAWS is working with the tests being conducted in many of the schools
throughout the US.
.In addition to detecting math that is rendered using MathJax in Internet
Explorer, JAWS now detects Math content that is directly included in the
HTML of a web page in both Internet Explorer and Firefox.
.The contents of the Math Viewer are now displayed visually on the screen.
The Math Viewer is accessed by pressing ENTER when JAWS encounters math
content on a web page. As the equation is navigated using the ARROW keys,
each expression or partial expression is highlighted so a sighted assistant
can easily track visually, what JAWS is speaking.
.Based on customer feedback, JAWS is now much more responsive when reading
long and complex mathematical expressions rendered by MathJax.
.Resolved a reported issue where JAWS was not recognizing math content in
Internet Explorer on Wikipedia when the Wikipedia user account was set to
render math using MathJax.
.Improved how JAWS pronounces various mathematical functions so they are
spoken using more natural language.
.The Technology News from CNET Research It lookup source now works as it did
in JAWS 15, displaying as many as 20 articles.
.If both JAWS and MAGic are running, resolved an issue where pressing the
Text Viewer toggle key on the MAGic Keyboard was not working.
.Resolved reported issues using the Find feature (CTRL+F) in FSReader.
.A customer reported that if focus was in a Windows security dialog and
speech was off, braille was not working as expected and JAWS was creating
several untitled voice profiles. This is now fixed.

Microsoft Excel
.When focused in the Font edit combo box, addressed a reported issue where
the location of the cursor was not being shown in braille.
.Resolved a reported issue where JAWS was not reading the list of column
headers in the Sort dialog box.
.Addressed an issue where information was not being displayed correctly in
braille in certain spreadsheets when the braille mode

Re: [JAWS-Users] Excel 2007 2013: Reading Cells w/ Large Amounts of Data

2014-08-09 Thread Lynn White
I am using Excel 2013. My question has to do with Copying text and
pasting into Excel.

When I do that, Jaws 15 seems to lose focus and I have to arrow back
through in order to focus back where Excel then speaks the columns again.

On 8/9/2014 9:38 AM, Jim Pursley wrote:
As I understand it, a line of text is accessed only in the cell at its

a work around. Can you make a pdf of the spreadsheet? If so, JAWS
reads pdf documents line by line, left to right if you have JAWS set
up to read by line. The pdf will read the entire line. I use pdf's
of Excel spreadsheets to read quickly, the spreadsheets themselves if
I want to get specific.

It would be ideal if you could get the writers of the spreadsheets you
read to adopt a convention to begin text at a predefined column,
though I realize the idea is not workable if the writer wants to
explain a specific number while in the same cell.

I will be interested to see if anyone else has a better idea.

Hello,

How can I change some JAWS setting, use JAWS differently or change
Excel to read the entire contents of each cell as I arrow around
in the spreadsheet? Reason: Some cells have many lines of text, with
possible line feeds so the text looks appealing to sighted
users. At this point I can't even tell what cells have extra text I
am missing with JAWS. I was just in a conference call reviewing
the spreadsheet and the sighted users could see more text then I
could is how I found out about this issue.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Hi Mike,

Actually, I found a book by Kathy Ann Myrta which has helped me a great

I will probably change it to go to the desktop as you suggested.

Thanks.

Lynn,
I am afraid that there are no great shortcuts to make Windows 8.1
easier to navigate. What you can do is set it up to boot directly to
the desktop like the older versions of Windows did. Here are the steps
for doing this:

-Open Control Panel either bvia the start screen or by pressing the
Windows logo key and pressing the letter X to open the Power Users
menu, then scrolling down to Control panel and press enter.
-In Control Panel, find either Appearance and Personalization, or
Taskbar and Navigation. The one that you find will depend on how you
have Control Panel configured.
-If you find Appearance and Personalization, open it and click on
Taskbar and Navigation,
- If you find Taskbar and Navigation, click on that, and then on the
Navigation tab inside of this.
- Now, check the box that says When I log in or close all open apps,
go to the desktop instead of the start screen.
- Next, tab down and press enter on the OK button. From now on, when
you sign in to Windows or close all open apps, the desktop will appear
instead of the start screen.

Another thing that you can do is to install an app that puts the start
menue back into Windows. Some examples of this are: Classic Shell
(www.classicshell.com), Start is Back (www.startisback.com) , or Start
8 (, from (www.stardock.com).

I hope these tips help you out, but it would be good if you still
tried to get used to the Windows 8.1 interface, because things are
probably not going to return to where they were before.

Best,
Mike
