[JAWS-Users] Problem With Winamp
I have a friend who is finding that the volume in Winamp is very low. The upper arrow control to increase volume doesn't do the trick. She has looked at her sound volume and it is where it should be. Note that there are links with the Security Enhanced section to explain the consequences of unchecking items there, and you may want to find out what they have to say. 1. Open Adobe Reader DC from your desktop or start menu icons, go into preferences with control-k. JAWS lands on an item in a tree view. If you have been here before, it will be the item you last opened. Arrow down to Security Enhanced. Note that this is the item below "Security." Then uncheck these 2 options, the 2nd option is not necessary to uncheck but, optional: Enable Protected Mode at startup, needs to be unchecked. Enable Enhanced Security, does not need to be unchecked. Note. When making changes in the Security Enhanced section, you will be told that Adobe needs to be restarted, but you can wait to finish the other changes first. 2. Launch the Edit menu, Alt + E, scroll down to the Accessibility submenu and open it. Scroll down to the Set-up Assistant and press enter. The Set-Up Assistant has five screens, but the only change you have to make is on the last, screen 5 of 5. Go through all the screens, pressing spacebar on "Next" in each instance, until you reach the fifth and final screen. Here, tab to the check box labeled "Display PDF documents in the web browser" and make sure it is unchecked. It may be checked by default. Then tab to the Okay button, & press enter. You can now close the program & give it a try on a PDF file. Take care. Mike Sent from my iBarstool. I think others may have pointed out that if you have already bought Jaws 16, they do have the latest version of it. But, you would have had to have bought 16. Re: [JAWS-Users] Upgrading to Windows 10, Microsoft Accessibility; Says sighted assistance necessary
I have a question. I updated to Windows 10 and am currently using Jaws 16 and will be installing 17. But, I won't do that until this problem is solved. I was one of those who gost a cumulative update from Microsoft that didn't go through properly. Every day just four in the afternoon, my PC restarts because Windows is still trying to get the update. I understand that this won't be fixed until Microsoft comes up with a fix for this. Is there a way to push the time to say, 2 in the morning? I need to do something so that my programs that run on my station don't get interrupted. Any help is definitely welcomed and appreciated. While talking to one of the MS helpers, he told me, "Well, Sir, you know that when we do the download for Windows 10, there will be a time, when there is no connection with us, and sighted assistance will be necessary." I replied, "Well, I understand at that point, I can turn on the narrator and complete it without sighted assistance." He said, "I don't think that is really the case. You need sighted assistance." Well, according to the notes from Jim Flusche, The narrator is totally useable, after the 10 install. Or did I misunderstand Jim's instructions? Two final questions: 1. Does FS send out CDs for the JAWS 17, for those of us with a SMA? 2. Would a CD be a good thing to have for starting a new Windows 10 computer, or can that be done via narrator, as well. Thanks. [JAWS-Users] Windows Explorer Locks
Lately, when I have been using Jaws 16, when I got into something like Drop Box, open a folder and arrow down, everything locks up. It has become so bad that I have to use another screen reader. I would rather use Jaws. But, it is just too frustrating to use Jaws. I have read all kinds of reasons for why windows Explorer can lock up. But there doesn't really seem to be a reasonable fix for this issue. I hope that someone might be able to help solve this problem. Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws stops whenever I plug in my uSB stereo and turntable
How do you do that? Thanks. On 9/3/2014 1:34 PM, Blackwell, Clifford wrote: You can use an external synthesizer or you can designate Jaws to use your onboard synthesizer. Ever since I got windows 7, I've been wanting to tackle this task. Re: [JAWS-Users] Excel 2007 2013: Reading Cells w/ Large Amounts of Data
I am using Excel 2013. My question has to do with Copying text and pasting into Excel. When I do that, Jaws 15 seems to lose focus and I have to arrow back through in order to focus back where Excel then speaks the columns again. On 8/9/2014 9:38 AM, Jim Pursley wrote: As I understand it, a line of text is accessed only in the cell at its beginning. I can offer no diorect solution to your issue but I have a work around. Can you make a pdf of the spreadsheet? If so, JAWS reads pdf documents line by line, left to right if you have JAWS set up to read by line. The pdf will read the entire line. I use pdf's of Excel spreadsheets to read quickly, the spreadsheets themselves if I want to get specific. It would be ideal if you could get the writers of the spreadsheets you read to adopt a convention to begin text at a predefined column, though I realize the idea is not workable if the writer wants to explain a specific number while in the same cell. I will be interested to see if anyone else has a better idea. On 8/9/2014 1:19 AM, Bill Tipton (ML) wrote: Hello, I use Excel 2007 and Excel 2013 with the latest version of JAWS 15. How can I change some JAWS setting, use JAWS differently or change Excel to read the entire contents of each cell as I arrow around in the spreadsheet? Reason: Some cells have many lines of text, with possible line feeds so the text looks appealing to sighted users. At this point I can't even tell what cells have extra text I am missing with JAWS. I was just in a conference call reviewing the spreadsheet and the sighted users could see more text then I could is how I found out about this issue. Thank you for any help you can provide. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and Windows 8.1
Hi Mike, Actually, I found a book by Kathy Ann Myrta which has helped me a great deal to get use to 8.1 and it's not too bad at all. I will probably change it to go to the desktop as you suggested. Thanks. On 7/7/2014 8:03 PM, Mike Boyd wrote: Lynn, I am afraid that there are no great shortcuts to make Windows 8.1 easier to navigate. What you can do is set it up to boot directly to the desktop like the older versions of Windows did. Here are the steps for doing this: -Open Control Panel either bvia the start screen or by pressing the Windows logo key and pressing the letter X to open the Power Users menu, then scrolling down to Control panel and press enter. -In Control Panel, find either Appearance and Personalization, or Taskbar and Navigation. The one that you find will depend on how you have Control Panel configured. -If you find Appearance and Personalization, open it and click on Taskbar and Navigation, - If you find Taskbar and Navigation, click on that, and then on the Navigation tab inside of this. - Now, check the box that says When I log in or close all open apps, go to the desktop instead of the start screen. - Next, tab down and press enter on the OK button. From now on, when you sign in to Windows or close all open apps, the desktop will appear instead of the start screen. Another thing that you can do is to install an app that puts the start menue back into Windows. Some examples of this are: Classic Shell (www.classicshell.com), Start is Back (www.startisback.com) , or Start 8 (, from (www.stardock.com). I hope these tips help you out, but it would be good if you still tried to get used to the Windows 8.1 interface, because things are probably not going to return to where they were before.
