The server this domain is being hosted is getting an upgrade in the next
couple of days. What this means to you folks is that things might be a
little out of sorts for a short time as our internet protocol or I. P.
address is going to change. It is very likely that services will be
disrupted while things propagate with all of the various servers around the
world.

What that means is with the new address all of the servers need to be made
aware of the new address and until that happens things will not be as smooth

until all of that activity is resolved.

The web site and the mailing list will both most likely be effected. Not to
worry as all will return to what passes for normal around here in short
order.

Nobody needs to do anything on their end, in fact all I have to do is enjoy
the ride so to speak.

Thank you for your understanding in advance as this should improve services.

Hi John,

I have found a toll free phone number at freedom scientific, where you can
get some help with your focus 40 blue braille display.

The number is:

1-888-666-6126

The technical support staff deal with braille display issues.

Good luck.

Hi John,

I am using the latest version of windows 10, jaws 18 and the focus 40 blue
braille display version 5.71.

The braille display user's guide that I have offers the following
instructions:

auto advance tobble on and off

press the the left and right selector keys together

that should turn off auto advance and stop the panning motion.

I am not sure, but i believe that you would have to press those keys one
more time to turn the auto advance feature back on.

Let me know how it goes; I am still a novice when it comes to using the
braille display, but, at least, I have a user's guide that i can refer to.

Write me offline, if you wish, and maybe, we can help each other.

take care,

[JAWS-Users] How to get focus-40 Blue to stop panning

2018-05-30 Thread JOHN RIEHL
I've recently purchased a new focus-40 Braille display. I can get it to
start panning - automatically moving from one set of 40 characters to the
next - but I don't know how to get it to stop panning.

Pressing the two rockers I used to start panning does not make it stop.

Can anybody help?

The easily accessible documentation does not have this info in it; I haven't
loaded the user's manual on to my computer yet.

All,

While in the messages list of my "in box", if I do a "shift tab" which takes
you to the list of your various mailboxes and then quickly tab back to the
message list, jaws will report the number of the message you are on and the
total number of messages. But this is not spoken until the entire displayed
headers are read.
Also, when you do the shift tab to the navigation list, jaws will report the
number of messages in the folder.

Al, I'm confident there isn't such a keystroke, which would be very useful.
With Outlook, including 2010, you're not even told what number email you're
at as you go down the list, a feature Outlook Express had, or has. That's my

only regret about giving up OE.

However, your mention of a word search makes me wonder which type of search
you're doing. If you just type a word into the initial search field, you're
searching only subject lines. The way I search for all words, whether in the

subject line or the message field, is the following:

Control-shift-f to commence the search.
Tab once
Down arrow once
Shift-tab once.
Now type your search term, then press enter.

Could someone please explain? I think that when I had Jaws 18 with office

that someone set it up for me and that my memory is now terrible, I'm not

[JAWS-Users] how to comfortably put Focus 40 in front of keyboard

2018-05-05 Thread JOHN RIEHL
Hi, folks. I checked with VFO and found out they used to sell a keyboard
stand for the focus 80 and 40 but they are no longer sold or in stock. Does
anyone have any recommendations for how to put the Focus in front of my
keyboard so I can use the keyboard and read the display comfortably?

Thanks!

[JAWS-Users] repost of message re stand for Focus-40 and keyboard

2018-05-02 Thread JOHN RIEHL
Hi. I never got a response to my message re where I can get a stand that
will fit my keyboard and let the Focus fit neatly under it.

So I'm reposting.

Hi, folks. I just got my brand new Focus-40 blue Braille display.

Unfortunately, I'm trying to figure out how to place it relative to my
keyboard. Years ago, work got me (and some other blind folks) really nice
metal trays - the keyboard would sit on the tray and the Braille display (a
focuss-80, as it happens) fits snugly right in front, a bit under the
keyboard. That way I can type conveniently and easily read the Braille
display. Does anyone know what I'm talking about, and, if so, where can I
get one of these keyboard stands?

Unfortunately the person who got these is gone and the current Disability
accommodations folks don't know what I'm talking about.

Thanks!

Hi. I'm still having the vexing and annoying issue of the latest issue of
JAWS periodically changing how it reads Outlook messages (windows-7, Outlook
2010). JAWS will be doing a great job of reading a message, then, for no
apparent reason, when I bring up the next message, read all kinds of info:
"Table 1, row 1, nesting level 3." etc. I have to close Outlook and,
sometimes, JAWS and bring them back for JAWS and Outlook to function
normally again.

I'm doing nothing to cause this to happen except bringing up the next e-mail
message.

This does not happen with every message, but it is repeatable, in that if I
read e-mail long enough it will, inevitably, happen.

Frankly, this is unacceptable. It would be helpful if the VFO folks who
monitor this list could at least acknowledge the problem. I'm happy to spend
time on the phone with VFO tech support so they can see the problem. I know
I'm not the only one who is experiencing this issue.

Thanks.

John, a frustrated JAWS user.

PS For whatever reason, this does not happen at work with JAWS Professional
and Outlook 2013.

Thanks.

That metal stand sounds nice. My Focus 80 at work came with a stand. When i use
a braille display that doesn’t have a stand, i use a thin print book to raise
up the keyboard. One Christmas my sister gave me a nice cutting board that a
friend of hers made . It never made it to the kitchen because it made a
perfect stand for a keyboard in back of my Brailliant 64.

As Jaws users we shouldn't "have to put up with it". I also experience this
freezing, both when switching between programs and when doing things in

switching programs, I would hope that Jaws programmers and developers are
addressing this, particularly since there is only one other competitor to

Hello Mike,
John Justice, here.
I work for the state and use configurations which are similar to the ones
you describe.

In the interest of correcting the problem, I brought it to the attention of
our upper level Access group. Their explanation doesn't solve any issues
but it might give you food for thought.

 1. THE ISSUE AT HAND: apparently, what we are experiencing is the
assignment of RAM. Current versions of Jaws tend to utilize a considerable
amount of RAM, especially when changing from one software environment to
another. The result is that the system has to {wait} for enough RAM to
perform the function.
2. PROGRAM PRIORITY ASSIGNMENT: It is possible to assign certain programs
on a PC so that they have a priority when RAM is distributed. This is way
beyond my pay grade Mike but apparently, within reason, certain programs can
be allowed to operate at the expense of others, at least temporarily. There
are exceptions to this rule and certain pieces of software are assigned a
permanent top priority. I imagine that the Windows operating system might
have that kind of assignment.
3. According to our A. T. department, reassignment involves the division of
RAM into smaller compartments which then handle this function. The entire
process scares the heck out of me. It isn't something I'd want to attempt.
There might be someone on our list with more technological knowledge than I
have.
4. A WORKING SOLUTION: I am now operating two computers simultaneously.
One is dedicated to some of the functions I need while the second unit
handles primary functions. For example, I use the secondary unit to load
and display Excel spreadsheets. But even with that arrangement, certain
pieces of software will temporarily shut down Jaws until they are fully
loaded. The down time has been measured and it is usually approximately32
seconds.
5. CREATING HOTKEYS FOR RELOADING JAWS: Finally, we have established
hotkeys which can be used to encourage Jaws to restart. Occasionally,
though rarely, Jaws wil not restart after one of these incidents. We use
three key combinations which are dedicated to reactivating Jaws.

The entire thing is frustrating to say the least, Mike. But it's something
we just put up with since jaws performs so well in most other respects.

it doesn't happen every time he switches windows. It does happen two to

JAWS freezes, he has to wait some 30 seconds before speech comes back.

I wanted to reach out to the list to see if any of you had any ideas as to

I've noticed this issue of JFW becoming more sluggish after a period of
time, too. Specifically, sometimes I will leave my PC on over-night. When I
come back to it in the morning, even using something like file explorer
seems like a chore for the computer/JAWS. I restart, and it's as good as
new, so to speak. I feel that I shouldn't have to do this. I may not be one
of them but there are people and organisations who have to keep their
systems running for long stretches of time as a matter of course.

Steve,

Might be, but as you say, 4 G of RAM is pretty massive. I agree that coding
is more likely the issue, since the real slowdown problems happened after
JAWS 16, when they changed "under the hood" operation. I still think JAWS is
subject to memory crowding either because of itself, or because it is using
memory areas that it did not use in the past. Most of my complaint have been
due to JAWS getting less responsive the longer it runs. After a clean
restart, it seems to get more responsive again, until it starts to slow
later.

I'll let folks know if I am more satisfied with jfw.exe set to high
priority.

One of your issues might be 32-bit OS. That limits you as to your memory

Tutorial for Using the Google Chrome Browser

By David Moore

This tutorial will be done with the latest update of Chrome.

I will also use JAWS 18 and NVDA 2017.2for this tutorial, because they both
work the same in Chrome.

Finally, I will use Windows 10 Creators Update latest public build.

I will assume that you have downloaded and installed Chrome.

There should be a shortcut on your desktop.

Section One:

Launching Chrome:

One way to Launch Chrome, is to press the Windows key or CTRL+Escape and
type Chrome in the search edit field, and press enter when you hear JAWS say
Chrome.

However, since you have already downloaded Chrome, You will have a shortcut
icon on your desktop.

So next, find the shortcut for Chrome on your desktop, and press enter to
open Chrome.

The short cut will actually say Google Chrome, so press G to find the Google
Chrome icon on your desktop.

The first very important step, is to press Windows+up arrow to maximise the
window. Chrome often opens with the window not maximise, and you will get
undesirable results.

Section Two:

Bringing up a web site.

Press CTRL+L or Alt+D

and type the following:

www.freedomscientific.com

The Freedom Scientific web site comes up very quickly.

All navigation commands like: H for heading, E for edit field, C for combo
box, and so on all work just the same in Chrome.

Section Three:

The Virticle Chrome menu:

I will press the Alt key.

The Chrome menu is open.

This is a very large virticle menu that you just keep pressing up and down
arrow through.

I will press insert+up arrow to hear the first option in this menu.

New Tab, CTRL+T.

You can press that command right from the web site you are on.

New Window, CTRL+N

You can press these commands right from your web page, instead of coming
here.

New incognito Window.

History sub menu.

I will press right arrow here to see what is in this sub menu!

History, CTRL+H

So, there is a key command for reading your history.

You can read a few sites you were on right here.

I will press left arrow to close this history sub menu.

Downloads, CTRL+J

There is the command for opening your downloads you have downloaded with
Chrome.

Next, the important Bookmarks sub menu.

I will press right arrow, to open this.

I hear, bookmark this page, CTRL+D

That command will bookmark the page you are reading.

Next down arrow, says show bookmarks bar, CTRL+Shift+B

That command, will show your bookmarks on your Chrome browser for all to
see. I do not want that.

Here is the important one.

manage bookmarks

The command is, CTRL+Shift+O

In here, you can organize your bookmarks into folders, see the bookmarks you
have imported from different browsers, and very importantly, you can
download, to your computer, an HTML file of all of your bookmarks in Chrome.

On your computer, you can press enter on this file, after it downloads, and
a page will show up in Chrome with a list of all bookmarks you have saved in
Chrome. This is an awesome way to download all of your bookmarks right to
your computer, so you can back them up.

That is all for manage bookmarks.

Next, I hear import bookmarks and settings.

press enter on this, and you can import all bookmarks and settings from IE,
and Firefox, right into Google Chrome, and they will be in their
corresponding folders.

Now, I hear all of my saved bookmarks as I continue to arrow down.

Very important!

Sometimes, when I open that bookmarks sub menu, I do not land on the choices
I mension here, but instead, I start hearing my saved bookmarks.
If this happens, I press up arrow a few times, and it gets me to these
choices.

Keep in mind, that many of these choices, like bookmark manager, have key
commands, so you do not have to come to this bookmarks sub menu at all. You
only need to come here most of the time, to arrow through your saved
bookmarks, and enter on the desired one.

To save a web site as a bookmark,

Just press CTRL+D and press enter, and your bookmark is saved.

I will now press left

I'm using the latest JAWS and Outlook-2010. Very frequently, for no apparent
reason, JAWS messages in Outlook become very difficult to read. Instead of a
nice and readable message, JAWS will say stuff like: nesting level x; table;
nesting level 3, etc etc; the actual text is very difficult to read.

Exiting JAWS and restarting the program fixes the problem for a while.
What's going on and how can I fix it?

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws and freezing

2018-01-28 Thread John Justice
I don't want to overwhelm this serious issue with inherently worthless
responses. However, technicians at VFO have told me that the issue is
"under the hood" so to speak. Apparently, the newer versions of Jaws have
been redesigned in such a way that their headroom can be inundated by
software which requires more than normal functionality. In other words, the
more complex the software, the higher degree of probability that Jaws might
freeze or even crash under certain conditions. On the other hand, I have
noticed that with jaws 18, the program will often recover itself without any
prompting. The freezing is annoying but if we can be reassured that Jaws
will recover, it might be something we'll just have to put up with until the
designers find a way to deal with it. Personally, I think that Jaws had
made some amazing progress recently. I have no reason to think that the
designers won't continue to make it a better program.

Hello:

This week, I'm noticing jaws just randomly freezes on me. I could be reading
an email, surfing the web, writing in word, yelling at the dog, and poof it
would just stop working.

I would do the jaws dump command and then try to bring it back with the
hotkey but it doesn't come back up, unless I reboot. Thoughts?

Hi Wayne,

Below is a dropbox download link for the latest MWB version. I don't know
about Jaws 15, but Jaws 16 works okay with this latest version, but then again
Jaws 17 will work much better. This newer version requires a lot of tabbing,
but install it & try to get a feel for it, then we'll see what you need help

Hello folks, I have been using the Malwarebytes program for a long time. I
did not update to the latest version because people on this list said it was
much less accessible than in the past. Now when I try to open Malwarebytes
there is an audio tone and then silence and Jaws 15 goes dead. I went to
Ninyt to update it but the same thing happened, it started to download and
then I got the tone and then nothing. There was no message like "Do you
want to permit this..." Are any of you using Malwarebytes with Windows 7
and JAWS 15 or 17?

Mike, in the run dialogue box, type "msconfig". In the startup tab, I
suspect you have a lot of "crap"(your words) and uncheck the items as you
down arrow through the list of startup items. About all I leave checked in
the start up dialogue is Jaws. Everything else you can start as needed.

That's interesting. When I tried to run FF 57 with JAWS 18, I got a message
warning me that my screen-reader would not function properly. This was a
message/alert that came from Firefox itself, and not JAWS. And indeed, JAWS
did not really work at all. However, the programme did not crash.

Whatever the case though, I'd still be curious to know why it is that there
isn't even rudimentary support for FS Quantum in JAWS. It would seem that
even with NVDA 17.3, the version I have as I still haven't installed the
update, the change in Firefox was somewhat anticipated, and attempts were
made to support it.

Revisiting an old question. Wit, it seems, most everyone noticing the
hangup of Internet Explorer at inopportune moments, is this due to the way
it is now interacting with Jaws? Is there a fix that the developers need to

So, windows defender is asking me to renew and wants me to pay for macafee.
Can anyone recommend an accessible anti virus spyware malware/protection?
Also, does windows 10 come with one naturally without having to renew?
Free is better, but this one which is asking me to renew is $59. So, is there
one cheaper?

hello;
if your wanting to add an email address to your contacts using outlook2016, try
the following;

1, enter on the message which has the contact's email address,

2, now press the keystroke,
ctrl+shift+y=copy item to dialog,

3, press the letter "c" until you hear contacts and press enter,

note a screen will come up with all the pertinate information, person's name,
email address, and, you can add to any of the edit fields, if you are satisfied
with the information, you can simply press, alt+s=save, now your placed back
into the message.
hope this helps.
I believe this will work for earlier versions of outlook.

Hello Mary:

J-Say is a British program that has been around for years, a wrap-around Dragon
Natural Speaking, designed for people with limited or no hand mobility. I had
to learn it years ago in order to teach a younger blind person with Multiple
Sclerosis and was surprised how well it works. You can indeed give commands to
the computer or dictate to it, it accommodates different accents, even
understood perfectly my Cuban-accented English.

Having said that, I still would not use it unless you have trouble typing; it
requires patience and with the advent of Cortana and the rapid updates to all
that new Windows technology, I would go that route instead.

As far as J-Dictate, I have no idea, never used it.

Regards,

Humberto

I’m guessing this question might be seen as a bit too general to be of interest
to the list. So please feel free to reply privately if you want. I don’t want
to clog the list with stuff folks don’t care about. I am curious about the J
dictate and J say. I read the blurb on Brian‘s website. I certainly don’t need
to control my entire computer via voice. But there are aspects of it that sound
like they could be rather useful. I mean, if you can really use natural
language to do all sorts of stuff, finding things changing settings etc.,
without having to memorize all the stuff that goes with that in terms of
keyboarding and what keystroke does work, it could be kind of nice. Anyway,
please do feel free to reply off list at the address I will put right here. I
guess I’m looking for Star Trek. Smile.

I know these are not your steps, but after you press, Alt + V, from the
Layout tab to get to the Vertical Alignment combobox, Vertical is not an
option from the list. The Vertical Alignment combobox options are:
Top, Center, Justified, & Bottom.

Running Windows 7, Office 2010 Home & Student, & Jaws 16. When I create a
word .docx, & press either, Control + S, Alt + F, then A, or F12 to save the
document I do not get a save dialogue to name the file as whatever I want to
name it. The document just flat out disappears, & I can't find it anywhere!
I know where it's suppose to save to if it gets closed without being saved,
but like I said, I can't find where it's supposed to go or anywhere else!
I'm all out of ideas, would y'all please come to my rescue, & tell me what the
hell is happening?! LOL All help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much.
w
Take care. Mike. Dodgers, try again next year!

[JAWS-Users] OUTLOOK 2010

2017-10-27 Thread John Vernaleken`
Hello All,

Until today when I went to OUTLOOK I could use the arrow keys to read the
Headers )Subject, From, Date, Etc.,) and open or Delete the Email. As I
arrow through the Headers Jaws is not reading them, if I press the Space Bar
the Header is read.

Running Jaws 18 and Fall 1709.. I think I changed a setting by mistake.

Thanks for any help.

John

I don’t' get that beep and am able to down-arrow. For me at least, Jaws
doesn’t announce the names of contacts, but they are being cycled through. I
email a lot of the same people for my business and have learned the pattern
of how they come up when typing out their names. The letter M and then arrow
down for Maria X, Y or Z for example. This still occurs. Again though, Jaws
just isn't announcing the changes.
Either way though, it is annoying and frustrating as I often now have to use
the to or CC or BCC buttons to go into my address book when I want to insert
multiple emails or if there is a long list of names with the same starting
sequence of letters.

When I am in the TO: field, I type the first letter of a name. With
previous versions of JAWS, the first name beginning with that first letter
in my autocomplete list would be spoken. If I was to hit the down-arrow
key, the next name in the list would be spoken. I could down-arrow through
the list until I found the name I wanted. When I hit the tab key, the name
would be inserted in to the TO: field and I could begin typing the next
to-name and repeat the process for this second name. None of this is
working with the new release of JAWS. After I have typed that first letter
and hit the down-arrow key, I hear a beep; indicating that I can't
down-arrow through the list. So, it isn't that JAWS just isn't announcing

[JAWS-Users] another way to turn on virtual ribbon using quick settings-RE: Learning MS ribbons - virtual or not ......

2017-08-20 Thread John R. Vaughn
Laura, another way to turn off or on, virtual ribbons is to use "quick
settings".
To do this:
1. hold the insert key(jaws key) down and press the letter V as in victor.
2. type in virtual or ribbons and press enter.
3. down arrow to the quick setting control for virtual ribbons and jaws will
announced checked or not. Use the space bar to check or uncheck.
4. press enter or escape to clear control
Note while on the item, virtual ribbon, if you tab once, use the arrow keys
to read help on this subject and how it works and if the item is checked or
unchecked by default.
Note 2 You can use this quick setting to find other settings you might want
to change.

I would turn off the virtual ribbon. It is handy, but you become dependent
on them and they don't work as well as the original menus, since they don't
use first-letter navigation. I tried them briefly years ago and decided to
buckle down and just learn to use the ribbons.

I've memorized certain shortcut keys to do very specific things but need to

Right now virtual ribbons are turned on .. Would it be easier and more

Hello folks.

I'm usually pretty good at this stuff, but I'm stumped for the moment and
maybe someone here could offer a suggestion. I'm trying to download a direct
deposit form from my bank. This is a pdf file. I mostly just need some of the
info from the form and may not actually be filling it out online. At any rate,
I am using Firefox, JAWS 18 and Windows 10. When I click on the link to the
form, it is supposed to open a pDF in the Adobe viewer, perhaps in its own
window. JAWS reads a message that Firefox has blocked the website from opening
a popup window, and I hear it say "alt-o for options", and also "click to
close this message". Obviously, I want the file to open. I've come across
dialogues like this before, such as the standard file download one, and don't
generally have a problem with them. However, here, pressing alt-o doesn't seem
to do a damn thing. I can't re-click the link at all; if I try doing it again,
I don't think that initial alert even pops up . not until I re-log-in to the
bank site. I've tried saving the link to my drive, but it's just an html file
that probably generates a part of the pdf content, and I can't access it this
way. Any ideas? Why am I not able to interact properly
with this dialogue box?

G-mail? I need to either have a draft message that I can use to send out to
new contacts, or be able to forward the original message and edit out the FWD
from the subject line and the old header info in the body of the message. I
will be sending out over 150 of these messages as I receive contact info. If
I have multiple to send out at once, I plan to put all of the addresses in the
BCC line. I do use Outlook 2010 for my personal e-mail, so is there a way to
access this other account with Outlook and not have the messages get mixed
together?

Thanks,

Annette

Subject: [JAWS-Users] touch cursor help

Hello all. I'm a recent Window-eyes migrant and am having conceptual trouble
understanding and using the touch cursor. When I invoke it in the Media
Human application, I can use tab and shift-tab to navigate among screen
elements that are unspoken with both the Jaws and PC cursors. But once I
locate the desired element, I can't activate it.
Must I route the Jaws cursor to the touch cursor position and press the left
mouse button in order to activate the element, or can the activation be
performed exclusively with the touch cursor?
More profoundly, is the touch cursor only useful to access elements that are
inaccessible with the other cursors, but not to activate elements? I realize
that the touch cursor was primarily intended for tablet use, but I'm
attempting to use it on my desktop and laptop. If there are any useful touch
cursor tutorials, I'm happy to digest them.
Thanks,

[JAWS-Users] Two options and set up adobe guidelines-RE: PDF files won't read at all

2017-07-26 Thread John R. Vaughn
Joanne, I have discovered that some difficult Adobe documents can be opened
with Googgle Chrom, the internet browser.
How I access the adobe document is save the document to my documents. Then
when I want to read it, I press the application key and down arrow to "open
with" and press enter. I then have Adobe DC, google chrome and Edge listed
to use. On the google chrome item, I press enter and patiently wait while
Google opens and prepares the document for reading. When Edge begins to work
with Jaws, that may be another option for us to read Adobe documents.
If you have the K1000 product, this program can open many adobe documents or
convert the document into a text document. In this instance, I would save
the adobe document as noted above, and when I get to the document in my list
of documents I want to open, I press the applications key and down arrow to
a choice called ""recognize with Kurzweil automatically" and press enter.
The document is then converted into a rich text format which can be read by
Word. In this instance, the document is converted and saved in the same
folder the original adobe document was accessed. In this case, MS word
opens the document in rich text format.
I have also included below, some tips on setting up Adobe I have gathered
from various lists.
John
Tip 1
Setting up adobe to open in a separate window
You can set up Adobe to open PDF files in a separate window from IE, which
fellow lister Gerald explained more or less as follows:

In Adobe Reader, go to the Edit menu (alt-e) and arrow up to the
Accessibility submenu.
Select Set-up Assistant.
Control-tab several times. On page 5 of 5, the last page, of the Set-up
Assistant is a check box labeled "Display PDF documents in the web browser."
It should be unchecked so that the web page is processed directly by Adobe
Reader.
Tip 2
Below is information received from Freedom Scientific to help you get Adobe
Reader working.
A. Using the Accessibility Set Up Assistant
When you launch a PDF the first time, the accessibility set up assistant
opens. If the accessibility wizard has already run, do the following to open
it:
1. Press ALT+E to open the Edit menu.
2. Press Y to select Accessibility submenu.
3. Press ENTER on Set Up Assistant. The first page of this five page dialog
box opens. The default choice is fine, press ENTER to move to the next page.
4. On the second page you can change things if you wish, but by default it
is OK. Press ENTER to move to page three.
5. On the third page you can change things if you wish, but by default it is
OK. Press ENTER to move to page four.
6. On the fourth page, if you want to use the list of links, list of
headings, and the JAWS find command so on to access long documents, change
the radio button from
"For large documents, only read the currently visible pages"
to
"Read the entire document at once."
If you do not make this change, in long documents JAWS only sees the links
and headings on the current page. Additionally, JAWS can only search the
current page with the JAWS find command. If you do select read the entire
document at once, it may take a few seconds longer to process large
documents, but it is worth it to be able to see the links and headings in
the entire document, or to search the entire document with the JAWS find.
7. Press ENTER to move to page five of the Set Up Assistant.
8. If the check box for Reopen documents to the last viewed page is checked,
you may want to uncheck this. It is a personal preference. TAB through until
you reach the check box for "Display PDF documents in the web browser," and
uncheck it.
9. Press ENTER to activate the Done button.

B. Additional changes in Adobe Reader XI preferences.
1. Press CTRL+K to open the Adobe Reader XI preferences.
2. In the Categories list on the left side of the dialog box, choose
Accessibility.
3. Press TAB to move to the item, Show Portfolios in Files mode (not checked
by default) - check this.
4. Press TAB to move back to the Categories list and choose Security
(Enhanced).
5. Press TAB to move to Enable Protected Mode at startup (checked by
default) - uncheck this.
6. Press TAB to move to the OK button, and activate it with the SPACEBAR.

NOTE: The option to view PDF documents in the browser is no longer found in
the Preferences. You must use the Set Up Assistant to find this. See Tip 1
above.

Re: [JAWS-Users] How can I lock the JAWS key?

2017-07-06 Thread John O'Regan
Hello Again,

Thanks to everyone for their replies. Remapping the date function to
the Pause key is the best solution I've heard so far, imho.

But I'm afraid I've unintentionally misled you. My question was meant
to be more generic. Holding down the Ins key while pressing F12 twice
quickly was just an example.

How would my hypothetical one-handed typist who can only press one key
at a time press the Ins key and press T twice quickly in help mode
(Ins+1) to hear extended help for the Say Title keystroke, for
instance?

Icymi, in the latest release of NVDA it is now possible to lock the
NVDA key by pressing it twice, if Sticky Keys are enabled.

[JAWS-Users] How can I lock the JAWS key?

2017-07-05 Thread John O'Regan
Dear List,

Imagine you had one hand and you could only press one key at a time.
In NVDA, you could turn on Sticky Keys by pressing Shift 5 times and
then lock the NVDA key by pressing it twice. This would enable you to
press F12 twice quickly to hear the date (and not the time).

Is it possible to do the same in JAWS? And yes, I know all about
Settings Centre > Default > User > Insert Key Mode. It doesn't work.
And don't tell me to use my thumb and forefinger. I want to know if
it's possible to make JAWS speak the date by pressing only one key at
a time.

TIA!

I'm confused by some of these responses. John has clarified his original

I'm using a Windows 7 computer with the latest version of JAWS 16 and IE

instructions for doing so on Google. However, I'm having difficulty
finding the options that the article says I should find.

First, there seems to be an option to turn on keyboard short cuts in the
Settings menu, but when I open the Settings menu, I don't find that
option. Where is it? Can I not find it because I'm using IE instead of
Chrome?

When trying to delete a batch of message, it says to type in the name of
the messages in the upper Search field. I can do that, It then says to
check a select box. I can find a select button but no check box. Once
that is checked, there's supposed to be a way to select all the messages.
I can't find that option.

Once that is selected, there is supposed to be a delete button at the top
of the page. Again, I can't seem to find that.

It has only just occurred to me that this might go better in Chrome, but
failing that, any suggestions on how I can better navigate Gmail with
JAWS?

Thanks for your help.

I haven't heard anything, so I thought I would try it again, smiles.

Every time I open up an email it starts reading in the middle, or sometimes
at the bottom.

How do I get it to read at the top?

I'm using windows10, jaws18, MS2010, and outlook, on a 32 bit computer.

Thanks Patti

Yes, you have to go into setting for OE 2010 and check a check box to do
this key combination. If I see where that setting is, I will write back.
But just checking mail before bed time.

I am also using Outlook 2010 and I tried the ctrl + Delete key on two open

Adrian, amen. Nice that windows and jaws give us a number of options to
navigate the computer. Issue for my 73 year old brain is remembering the
options. That is the joy of this list to help reinforce commands.

This is one of those situations where describing the process is more arduous
than just doing it. Control-home is no big deal, any more than alt-numpad2,
escape or control-d are. Soon enough habits are ingrained, and the process
takes no time or even thought. Now, as for other workarounds, they can be
annoying and time-consuming.

Dave, good point. I usually only use the control d command when reading my
