Re: [JAWS-Users] Need To Re-enable Hyperlinks In Outlook E-mail
Adrian: To summarize where I am so far with the hyperlinks issue, it now looks like your suggested strategy for creating and opening hyperlinks in an e-mail do work. Not sure why the change from the other day. I also successfully used the control K command to force the creation of a hyperlink in an e-mail, and that seems to have worked as well. Not sure what has changed, other than the fact that I confirmed the suggested settings for reading e-mail in non-text format, and composing e-mail in HTML format. I'll keep these instructions for future reference. Thanks to all for your patience with this issue. I'm not sure how and why things sometimes change in Outlook settings. I believe Miriam made this suggestion yesterday, and I've been doing it for a long time. Links are not shown as links without the return character at the end. When trying to open a link, right-arrow over the link's first character before pressing enter. I've found that Outlook fluctuates between this extra step being needed and not needed, though why it should be is beyond me. Separately, I'd be interested to know if Fernando's suggestion works for you. I hope you'll post the result. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Tom Behler Sent: Tuesday, July 04, 2017 9:37 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Need To Re-enable Hyperlinks In Outlook E-mail Subash: Sorry, but the http://www.jaws-users.com/help link wouldn't open in your original e-mail, and there was no hyperlink designation with it. I posted this comment earlier it didn't seemed to get picked up. So I am posting it again. Here it is: I haven't been following this thread. So if what I have to say doesn't apply, then please ignore it. I was having trouble with hyperlinks in my email. I am using Outlook 2010. With some of the hyperlinks that I would get in my email , email from AFB, for example, when I would click on the link it would take me to a page that would say something like, sorry that link was broken. Or something like that anyway. But the thing is that that kept happening but not to all of the email links that I would receive in my email. So I call Microsoft because one of the emails that they sent me wouldn't work. After some investigating, the tech found that the problem was that email links were too long and Outlook 2010 couldn't handle email links of that length. If I would get an Outlook version that was not so old the email links would work. I found that If I forwarded my emails to my outlook dot com account and open them in the Mail app all worked . So I suppose that I will have to update my Outlook 2010 to a newer release. So, like I said, this might not be what you have been talking about. But if something like this is happening to others, this is the answer. Get a later version of Outlook. lly : ), head over to another computer where Outlook links work just fine and do the following: 1. Export the registry key from the computer that doesn't have any problems with links in Outlook. Open the Registry Editor. As you remember, you need to click the Start button, type regedit and then press Enter. Find the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\htmlfile\shell\open\command Right click the command subkey and select Export from the context menu.Export the registry key from the computer where hyperlinks in Outlook hyperlinks work fine. Alternatively, on Windows 7 or Windows 8 you can switch to the File menu, and click Export... there. In earlier operating systems, the Export option may reside on the Registry menu. Type a file name that is easy for you to remember, e.g. "Exported key" and save the registry branch to some folder.Type a file name and save the registry branch. Close Registry Editor. 2. Import the registry key to the problem computer. This step is probably the easiest one we've performed today. Simply copy the exported registry key to the desktop (or any folder) on the affected computer, and then double-click the .reg file. 3. Make sure the Default value of the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \.html key is htmlfile. To check this, click the Start button again, type regedit to open the Registry Editor, and then navigate to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \.html key. We've done this operations several times today, so I believe by now you are able to do this standing on your head : ) Make sure the Default value of the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \.html key is htmlfile. If the Default value of this registry key is other than htmlfile, modify it in the same way as we discussed in Editing the registry manually. Well, you have spent quite a lot of time troubleshooting this issue and hopefully now hyperlinks in your Outlook work again without a problem. If against all odds the issue persists and you still cannot open links in Outlook, restore your system as the last resort. Do a system restore System restore is a way to undo the resent changes in your computer's system in order to restore it to an earlier point in time. You can open System Restore by clicking the Start button and typing System Restore in the search field. Then click Enter or wait a bit and choose System Restore from the list of results. In the System Restore dialog window, you can either go with the Recommended restore" option or "Choose a different restore point" when you know for sure that everything worked fine, including hyperlinks in Outlook." -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Tom Behler Sent: July 3, 2017 5:43 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Need To Re-enable Hyperlinks In Outlook E-mail Fernando: The “Network and Internet paths as hyperlinks” option is checked. If this dialog box works, your problem is that the Auto-Format as You Type feature is not converting URLs into hyperlinks. To turn it back on so links are generated when pressing ENTER after typing an URL, go to File, Options. Select the Mail category, tab to the Spelling and Auto-Correct button. In the new dialog, tab to the Auto-Correct options and press it. Press CTRL+TAB until you reach the Auto-Format as You Type tab. In this tab, find and check the “Network and Internet paths as hyperlinks” option and press OK repeatedly until you reach to the Outlook main window. I think this will be fix for your problem. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [ <mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com> mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Tom Behler Sent: Monday, July 3, 2017 2:18 PM To: 'Jaws users list' < <mailto:jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com> jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com> Subject: [JAWS-Users] Need To Re-enable Hyperlinks In Outlook E-mail Hello, everyone. So I call Microsoft because one of the emails that they sent me wouldn't work. After some investigating, the tech found that the problem was that email links were too long and Outlook 10 couldn't handle emails of that length. If I would get an Outlook version that was not so old the email links would work. I found that If I forwarded my emails to my outlook dot com account and open them in the Mail app all worked . So I suppose that I will have to update my Outlook 10 to a newer release. So, like I said, this might not be what you have been talking about. But if something like this is happening to others, this is the answer. Get a later version of Outlook. Hi everyone, Just to let you all know that if you hit the space bar after the link it will make it a hyper link. I have a little vision and I can see after I paste the link and hit the space bar after I paste the link it will turn it into a hyper link. Just for you all's information. In other words, there's no hyperlink designation with either example; just the raw text of the link. This leads me to believe that there's something going on with how my Outlook 2016 or Jaws is reading e-mails. I think we're slowly getting to the bottom of this. I need to head out now, but will try some of the other suggestions I received when I get back. So, please keep those thoughts and suggestions coming. Tom, Try one method for creating links and another for clicking on links, as follows: When adding a link to a message, be sure to press the return key right after the link's last character. I believe it also changes how incoming messages are displayed, but I can't confirm that. In outlook go to the File menu by pressing Alt _+ f. Arrow down to options and press Enter. Arrow down to Mail and press tab Arrow Down once and you will find a combo box that displays what format Outlook is currently using to compose messages. Arrow down in the combo box and three buttons will be available. They are plain text, Rich Text and HTML Arrow down to the format and press the enter key on the button of the format you want To confirm this change, you need to press the OK button at the very bottom of this list. You are still in a very long list of options. You can tab through all of these to get to the OK button. However, from where you are it is easier to go backwards through the items. Hold down your shift key and press tab until you hear OK. Release the shift key and press enter on that OK button. If you feel like you made a mistake in this menu, worry not. Hit the Escape key and the menu will vanish and no changes will be made. You will just have to start over. Note, my setting here was Rich Text and I had no issues with activating an HTML that was part of a message I was reading. In terms of inserting an HTML link, I usually just cut and paste these, but they do appear as active links to me and to the reader on the receiving end. so I can't confirm the typing method you described. Re: [JAWS-Users] Need To Re-enable Hyperlinks In Outlook E-mail
Hello Tom, You might want to check your Email security settings in trust center. Use Alt with F followed by T to open options. When in the list of categories use the end key to move to the trust center. Tab to and use the trust center settings button. Use up or down arrow key and find the Mail Security item. Tab and make sure the checkbox "Read all standard mail in plain text" is not checked. If it is then use spacebar to uncheck the checkbox and use the OK button. When you go into options find the mail category and make sure that HTML is chosen for "Compose messages in this format." Make sure when you are composing a message that under the Format Text tab HTML is chosen for the format. It use to be that when replying to a message sent using the plain text format that Outlook would only let you reply using the plain text format. I am not sure if that is still the same. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Need To Re-enable Hyperlinks In Outlook E-mail
Hi Tom, You should test the CTRL+K keystroke from withing the message body edit box. If hyperlinks inserted from within this dialog work, the problem is exclusively Outlook-related. If not, you might need to check wetter IE is working properly, even if it is not your default browser, as the infrastructure for showing messages depends on Word, and Word's HTML rendering depends internally on Internet Explorer components. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Tom Behler Sent: Monday, July 3, 2017 9:34 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Need To Re-enable Hyperlinks In Outlook E-mail Where do you check for hyperlinks functionality via control K? Re: [JAWS-Users] Need To Re-enable Hyperlinks In Outlook E-mail
If your email is set to html, the live links should be there. My email is set to plain text so, some are there and some are not. But even when I was using Outlook 2003 where I could easily switch to html when I wanted links to show, some links didn't. Does anyone know how I can enable the huyperlink function in Outlook e-mail? I'm using Office 365, Outlook 2016, and Windows 7 here with Jaws 18. Re: [JAWS-Users] Need To Re-enable Hyperlinks In Outlook E-mail
Adrian: I couldn't get to the HTML formatting option via Alt O, followed by t and H in a new message, forwarded message, or in a reply. However, I eventually did find the HTML button in the format menu itself. I have activated this, and was told that the HTML button was pressed, but hyperlinks are still not showing up. Again, I'm using Outlook 2016, and Jaws 18 with Windows 7 here.
