Re: [JAWS-Users] New Printer
Hi. We have an HP LJ cm 1415, which is a color laser with flat bed scanner and auto feed scanner capable of sending and receiving faxes. It is a pretty nice printer, only problem is it has a touch screen on it, so for simple things like coppying I can't really use it. Printing with it, or scanning, is fine because that process is initiated from the computer or phone and no confirmation is required to actually complete the action on that touch screen. It has a web interface with which you can control a lot of settings and read up on its status. It used to get lost all the time and when you tried to print to it over WiFi the device trying to print couldn't locate the printer. I solved that by reserving the IP the printer chose once when I switched it on, from my router's settings. Now we never have issues with that, which I'm quite glad for. Sheesh that was irritating. Re: [JAWS-Users] New Printer
Hi, This one is a Work Force 2650. There was some assistance needing to set this up. Jaws did what it could, but there was some check boxes that it couldn't check regardless of my attempts. My son used the mouse. This printer is not connected to my desktop. It's all running wifi and it's networked to my laptop. It does have the ability to print just with black. After the setup was completed, Jaws was reading all the info after that. The setup was a circle that needed a checkbox, I tried to do it, but just couldn't get jaws positioned in the right area. I'm only mentioning this in the event someone else installs this model. We did install the driver disk, then it found latest drivers online, it updated it's self. When I rebooted, I recieved a message allowing the printer to have access through window's firewall. I suspect this is due to the shared network. - Original Message - From: Carolyn Arnold To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Saturday, May 02, 2015 1:34 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] New Printer I have an HP 5100 - $89 in 2004. Re: [JAWS-Users] New Printer
Good luck with your new printer Trish. I too am now an hp user, coming from an Epson that lasted less than two years. The carriage for the ink cartridges went completely haywire on the thing, but I believe that you get a lemon with everything once in a while. I hope yours works well for you.
I have subscribed to the hp Instant Ink Program. For $5.44 per month, I always have a fresh set of cartridges to install into my printer. When I was buying the cartridges, I had to buy 4 sets per year, at $60 per set, so I spent $240 per year on printer ink. Now, at $5.44 per month, I am only spending $65.28 per year, and Ias I said, I never run out of ink. My plan is for 100 sheets per month, and it doesn'e matter if I print a page with one word on it, or a 8x10 Full color photo, both count as 1 sheet. hp also includes a roll over feature in this plan, so the sheets that I do not use this month will be added to the 100 sheets that I will getfor next month, so I always have over 100 sheets available to print each month. In my mind, that is a pretty good deal for ink, saving almost $175 per year. There is a lot that I can buy with that much money. Re: [JAWS-Users] New Printer
I am currently using a Brother 685CW all in one inkjet printer. It's a great printer, with a very large display that can be tilted to accommodate the user, and with the large screen, it's great for persons with low vision. The one thing I like about this printer is that the software you install on your computer, has a remote setup on it, which, once a setting is adjusted, makes the process completely accessible, though it does need some work on the cartridge screen. In any case, this model comes with a digital voicemail feature, and speaker phone, a dial pad, and can function as a stand alone model, so you don't have to rely on the PC to do any faxing. It's also got three different methods of access. It will connect to your computer via USB cable, in which case, if you want to be able to print with your other devices or computers/laptops/tablets, you will have to share the printer, which also means that your computer will have to remain on when you print from the other devices, but the great thing about this printer is that it will also connect through RJ-45 LAN cable to your router, or Wi-Fi, meaning if you use these methods of connection, it now becomes a network printer, and you can print anytime you want over the wireless connection in your home. It's also got a USB, SD card and MMC card slot which allows you to edit pictures directly on the printer screen for printing, or for importing onto your computer. The other great thing about this multi-function printer is that it's got both a document feeder, and a flat bed scanner, so you're not relegated to just the one scanning type. Either way, Once you install the Brother Status Monitor and Control Center, and the application is launched and you're in the main window, use your Jaws cursor to left click on the configure button, which will bring up a menu. In that menu, you'll find a Settings sub-menu, press the enter key, or the right arrow key to expand the sub-menu, followed by a down arrow to Skin Select and press enter to activate. In the resulting dialog box, select the classic menu, and you'll have access to all the button and tabs on the application. If you don't know how to use the Jaws cursor, then you will need sighted assistance, as I'm not sure the tab and spacebar key will allow you to get to and activate, respectively, the configure button that activates the menu you need to access in order to change the skin, but one can always try. In any case, I'm not sure if they still sell this particular model or not, but if you're willing to pay a bit more, then you can get an Air Drop model that allows you to print from your iPhone using Brother's cell phone app. Oh, and this model also comes with a handset, so it functions as a stand alone telephone, and once you're in the remote setup for the machine, you can control the number of rings, whether you want the machine to functions solely as a fax machine, tax/telephone machine, or one or the other. You can also configure the telephone code to remotely start the fax so that if you're not near the machine, you can pickup any phone in your house, press a key combination, and the fax machine will start up. You can also configure whether the incoming fax gets printed, or gets imported into your computer, and into your favourite application for processing, such as Kurzweill, or Open Book. Anyway, hope this helps.
