[JAWS-Users] jaws won't automatically start
Hi I bought jaws yesterday with two sma counts. Made sure my other jaws version was deactivated using the utility. Uninstalled and deactivated codeFactory sapi5 eloquence to avoid the themida error. Reinstalled jaws2018. Set it to start using the all users setting both the checkbox and combo box. Made sure jaws is checked in ease of access center in control panel in windows10 version 1803. Jaws comes on at the sign on screen. But when windows starts I have to start it manually with the keyboard shortcut I set up. It won’t start automatically by itself. Also when activating it, I got a cannot find iexplore.exe error, hit ok, and it said activation is successful. Could this have something to do with it? Do I have to reset windows10? joshknnd1...@gmail.com Josh Sent from Mail for Windows 10 For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Yes I know about how to navigate quick settings. I haven’t used jaws in about 10 years though, that was back when the state agency bought it for me. Sure if you could email that registry file to me at: joshknnd1...@gmail.com Thanks Sent from Mail for Windows 10 From: Orlando Enrique Fiol Sent: Tuesday, May 22, 2018 10:58 To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws won't automatically start Hi Josyh. A few things: Why did you deactivate your old Jaws before installing the new version? When I was confident about version 2018 and no longer wanted to use version 18, I simply uninstalled it without deactivating it. It may be that the activation information applies to all versions and you may have removed it all. The same applies to Eloquence, which you needn't have uninstalled. As for Jaws not starting automatically, when you enter the relevant dialogue and check both boxes, okay that and reopen the same dialogue. Check whether the settings stuck. When this happened to me, I had to have Jaws tech support escalate my case until an actual Jaws developer told me which registry keys needed to be added. If you are uncomfortable editing the registry, I could privately email you a .reg file that you only need to open and okay. Windows 10 will import the registry settings. [JAWS-Users] edit boxes and jaws and at prime helper
HI I noticed on the internet if I am writing in a comments field, NVDA tells me it is a multiline edit, whereas Jaws just says edit. Can this be changed somehow so jaws tells me the different types of edit fields more clearly? Also in windows mail, when I read a message, then press escape, I always have to shift tab back to the imbox. Can this be changed somehow so I am placed back into the inbox or message list right away? This issue seems to not be screen reader specific though. And also in windows mail. When in the message body, jaws just says message. Is there a way to have jaws indicate this is an edit box or document input area? Finally, a number of years ago, vict consultancy was working on a windows accessibility helper called at prime, this would let all screen readers access information and stuff on the screen that normally was not visible to screen readers. I would love to see VFO take over at prime and maybe either incorporate it into jaws, or sell it as a separate product. This way jaws could read and access even more on screen information. Hi, I thought of something. You may want to make a jaws frame which surrounds the umute button, give it a keyboard command and tells it to click the button inside the frame after routing the jaws cursor there, and only appears when it sees you are in chrome and on that website. It only activates then. Next, assign it a keyboard command and make it say something so you know it worked. And then assign another jaws frame to the play button using jaws frames viewer. I succeeded in changing the file association to MS Word, which partially solved my problem, even though the original format is lost. I spoke to FS about it last week, and the tech support guy sounded doubtful that JAWS can read .xml files at all. Try changing the file association. With any luck, you'll pair the file type with an application that works well for your purposes. I don't know which OS you have. In Win7, go to the Windows edit field, start typing file association, and a list will appear. [JAWS-Users] more voices for jaws idea
I had an idea for more voices for the jaws screen reader. Jaws only supports sapi5 voices. So I was wondering if there are any developers on here or maybe even if freedom scientific could make a free sapiBridge utility? First you would install the utility, it would install the sapi4 components if needed and one free voice maybe truVoice sapi4 or the older microsoft sapi4 voices. You go into a utility with a multi page dialog box each tab lets you assign sapi5 voices bridge1 through 10. you pick your sapi4 voice in the combo boxes there would be a button to let you quickly access the sapi4 speech control panel some sapi4 voices let you change other parameters with this control panel. so you pick your sapi4 voices you want to assign to sapi5. hit save. restart computer if needed. then when you load jaws which only sees sapi5 voices it would let you use sapi4 voices as if they were sapi5. Note if someone would make sapi bridge please make it so the bridge would also work outside of jaws like in the late jim kitchen's games and other applications. with sapi bridge any older sapi4 voice could become a sapi5 voice. also the bridge would monitor for crashes try to reload the voice if it crashes if it can't it plays a sound. I would love to use truVoice or the old FlexTalk with jaws and jim's games and other audio games but I cannot because they only support sapi5, so we need a sapi bridge for more voice choices. thanks Josh -- sent from mozilla thunderbird For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

If so, how are we meant to run the upgrade if we don't have any speech? In addition, do we need to use the FS uninstall tool as mentioned? If so, do we run that after uninstalling Jaws? Or do we use that to uninstall jaws? O! and usually we get told not to choose the remove shared componants option when uninstalling Jaws. Since they want us to remove all versions of Jaws. Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws and decTalk access32
DecTalk sapi5 is free but doesn't sound much like original decTalk, don't know what they did to it. and decTalk access32 works fine in windows 10. On 7/28/2016 2:33 PM, Mike O'Brien wrote: Hi Dectalk Access32 was originally sold and serviced by Hinter Joice, which is now Freedom scientific. But I doubt that it is still available from them. There was also a version sold by GW Micro, the makers of WindowEyes. But JAWS quit allowing that version to be used somewhere around Jaws 11 or Jaws 12. Dectalk Access32 from Freedom Scientific works fine in Windows XP. But as far as I know, it will not work on any subsequent version of Windows, (Vista, 7 8 or 10). So I'm a little surprised that it is still available in JAWS 16 and 17, which cannot be used with Windows XP. Below is what I have learned for the new action center. Using the new action center in the Windows 10 anniversary update. How to choose what items show up in the action center. 1. Press Windows key+I, takes you to the settings area edit box. 2. Tab one time to the list of 9 main categories. 3. Press enter on system, tab one time to the list of sub-categories. 4. Down arrow three times to, Notifications and actions, press enter. 5. Tab one time to, a current list of quick actions on your PC. 6. Press the right arrow key to see all the current pinned items in the action center on your PC. 7. Tab one time to, Add or remove quick actions link, press enter. 8. You will land on the home button, begin tabbing across here. 9. Use the spacebar to check, or to uncheck any items that will show up in the action center. 10. Press ALT+f4, when you are done. 11. Now when you press Windows key+A, for the action center. 12. I landed on notification, because I had some in action center. 13. I down arrowed to read the notification. 14. I tabbed one time to, dismiss this notification, press the spacebar. 15. . Now tab one time to the first quick action in action center. 16. Now simply use your right arrow key to go across all the items you have selected to show up in action center. 17. The first item you should land on after pressing Windows key+A, is, collapsed quick actions or current notifications if you have any. 18. If you have any notifications, just press the down arrow key to read them. 19. Tab one time to, list box, use your right arrow key to read the quick actions. 20. Again, after pressing Windows key+A, you will land on one of two things. Either collapsed quick actions if you have no notices, or current notifications, if you have new notifications. So when you tab one time, you will hear either, clear this notification, or you will hear the first quick action, just press the right arrow key if you land on the first quick action to see the rest of the quick actions in the action center. just to let you all know mouse echo is nothing new. NVDA has had very good mouse echo for the past 6 years or so now. Jaws is pretty much just now copying what NVDA has already done. Making jaws run faster and restricting virtual cursor to dialogs on websites is good though and I may use that feature. On 9/10/2016 9:42 PM, Humberto Rodriguez wrote: Hello all: After listening to the latest Freedom Scientific podcast in which Eric Damri tells us about the innovations of the upcoming update of JAWS to version 18, the new regular mouse echo motivated me to do what I usually do not do, to install and try the Beta 1 version. I did and was pleasantly surprised with the functionality of JAWS 18, so far so good, it seems fast, works well with Outlook 2016, IE 11, Skype and everything I have done so far, I am happy with it and have already asked the VA to update me, although unfortunately, they do not purchase SMAs, they wait until the production version comes out. I just want to make two ubservations: the first one is that the transferring of all the custom settings from JAWS 17 to JAWS 18, although the dialog came up and I went through it, did not happen; I had to make the changes manually. The second is that the mouse echo seems to work very well, but for someone totally blind like me, it will take some practice to learn to use it efficiently, to know where the icons and other controls, as well as the borders, are on the screen; also through practice, learn to move it slower, for I tend to move it too fast. All in all however, I recommend all users of JAWS 17 to try it, I think it is worth it. [JAWS-Users] Fwd: We may see some really great Sounding TTS in the near feature

I can’t wait to have those voices on our devices! Here’s is the extract, followed by the URL to the page, and be sure to head over to that page, and take a listen to some of those voices. If you don’t want to read while you are on the page, you can simply hit letter B, to take you to the “play button.” The first ones are demonstrating how the current Google TTS sound, and then the latter ones, demonstrate the more modern sounding ones. There are a couple other languages in there besides U.S. English and Chinese. Quote: This post presents WaveNet , a deep generative model of raw audio waveforms. We show that WaveNets are able to generate speech which mimics any human voice and which sounds more natural than the best existing Text-to-Speech systems, reducing the gap with human performance by over 50%. We also demonstrate that the same network can be used to synthesize other audio signals such as music, and present some striking samples of automatically generated piano pieces. Talking Machines Allowing people to converse with machines is a long-standing dream of human-computer interaction. The ability of computers to understand natural speech has been revolutionised in the last few years by the application of deep neural networks (e.g., Google Voice Search ). However, generating speech with computers — a process usually referred to as speech synthesis or text-to-speech (TTS) — is still largely based on so-called concatenative TTS , where a very large database of short speech fragments are recorded from a single speaker and then recombined to form complete utterances. This makes it difficult to modify the voice (for example switching to a different speaker, or altering the emphasis or emotion of their speech) without recording a whole new database. This has led to a great demand for parametric TTS , where all the information required to generate the data is stored in the parameters of the model, and the contents and characteristics of the speech can be controlled via the inputs to the model. So far, however, parametric TTS has tended to sound less natural than concatenative, at least for syllabic languages such as English. Existing parametric models typically generate audio signals by passing their outputs through signal processing algorithms known as vocoders . WaveNet changes this paradigm by directly modelling the raw waveform of the audio signal, one sample at a time. As well as yielding more natural-sounding speech, using raw waveforms means that WaveNet can model any kind of audio, including music. WaveNets Wave animation Researchers usually avoid modelling raw audio because it ticks so quickly: typically 16,000 samples per second or more, with important structure at many time-scales. Building a completely autoregressive model, in which the prediction for every one of those samples is influenced by all previous ones (in statistics-speak, each predictive distribution is conditioned on all previous observations), is clearly a challenging task. However, our PixelRNN and PixelCNN models, published earlier this year, showed that it was possible to generate complex natural images not only one pixel at a time, but one colour-channel at a time, requiring thousands of predictions per image. This inspired us to adapt our two-dimensional PixelNets to a one-dimensional WaveNet. Architecture animation The above animation shows how a WaveNet is structured. It is a fully convolutional neural network, where the convolutional layers have various dilation factors that allow its receptive field to grow exponentially with depth and cover thousands of timesteps. At training time, the input sequences are real waveforms recorded from human speakers. After training, we can sample the network to generate synthetic utterances. At each step during sampling a value is drawn from the probability distribution computed by the network. This value is then fed back into the input and a new prediction for the next step is made. Building up samples one step at a time like this is computationally expensive, but we have found it essential for generating complex, realistic-sounding audio. Improving the State of the Art We trained WaveNet using some of Google’s TTS datasets so we could evaluate its performance. The following figure shows the quality of WaveNets on a scale from 1 to 5, compared with Google’s current best TTS systems ( parametric and concatenative ), and with human speech using Mean Opinion Scores (MOS) . MOS are a standard measure for subjective so

I am or I havve tried to make a good recording. that is all. I have created nothing but a recording of the orbit reader20 very low cost braille display prototype by american printing house for the blind... that i am testing out. this braille display is going to, I hope, really really lower the cost of refreshable braille. so far I really like the prototype testing unit. It works great! and I can't wait to buy the final product once it is out. orbit20 will cost $499 for a brand new unit everything included. I will test the prototype with jaws tomorrow morning. So in NVDA, I'm navigating the web page using the arrow keys in Browse mode. Then I land on the clickable element which is contained in a table cell. I need the mouse pointer to left click it. Tried pressing [Insert]+[/ on Numpad] then hitting [/ on numpad] to do this but it's not working. Does NVDA have a special way of activating a clickable element on a web page? And no, pressing the [Enter] key doesn't work. Must use the mouse pointer to left click it. The element isn't a conventional link or banner. It's a graphic created by a JAVA script of some type. Am I'm even using the right steps? If I'm able to do this successfully, I'm going to think twice before investing another $140+ on my JAWS SMA when it expires. It's obvious the programmers of NVDA are more in tuned on providing useful functions to users of their screen reader in their updates.
