RE: Windows Tablets

2015-11-21 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
>From what I hear, the Surface Pro works very well. A few months ago, I
purchased a tablett size Asus model, with a laptop style keyboard as part of
the computer itself. I got it from Amazon for around 170 bucks. Doesn't
have a lot of hard drive space, but it is pretty fast. I purchased a Micro
SD card for initial storage purposes for around 15 dollars. The computer is
very light weight, and easy to travel with. If you use something like this,
I would recommend a drop box account, so you can put your files there, and
grab them when you get back home for your big computer.
One thing to keep in mind when searching for a Tablett. Make sure it is
running a full version of Windows, and not Windows RT. The RT systems won't
run JAWS. Good luck!

Subject: Windows Tablets

Hello, everyone.

I have a question that I hope will not be considered off topic for this
list.

I would like to purchase some sort of a Windows tablet to use when
traveling, and for when I don't want to drag my laptop computer around.

I am currently using Jaws 16, but plan to upgrade to Jaws 17 at some point,
probably in the next few months.

I assume that any windows-based tablet that I might get now will
automatically come with Windows 10 installed, which I'm ok with, since I'll
eventually need to upgrade my other computers to that operating system at
some point.

Can anyone give me recommendations and approximate costs of windows tablets
that would have sufficient resources to accommodate Jaws, and basic
Microsoft software such as Microsoft Office, Outlook e-mail, etc.?

At one point, I had considered moving to an IPad, but I am quite comfortable
with the Jaws to windows interface, so would prefer to stick with a Windows
tablet if at all possible.

Thank you!

Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan

Key mapping question.

2015-11-12 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
Good afternoon folks! I pose this question to the list because I know
they're a lot of smart folks on here who may be able to give me some advice.
I have a new keyboard that does not have an applications key on it. I would
like to map one of my keys on the spacebar row to serve as the apps key.
Does anyone know how I can do this? For now, I'm using shift plus F10 to do
this, but it would be a lot easier to just have an apps key. Many thanks
for any help!

RE: using chrome

2015-11-05 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
I have used the key stroke Alt plus N to find the buttons when downloading a
file in IE. I am successful most of the time. Another way that might work
is by pressing Alt plus the letter D to get to the address bar, and then
using shift tab to find the buttons.

Hello Adrian,
You mentioned that you are using IE 11. One of our computers has IE 11, and
when I attempted to download a file, I couldn't figure out how to do it. A
screen popped up which asked if I wanted to open or save the file, but I
couldn't find a place to activate either of these options. There was a link
for more information and a close button. Are there some settings I need to
change?
Thanks Adrian, or anyone else with IE 11 experience.

Hi, it's Annabelle.
I'm not sure if this is the right department for this question, but here
goes. I'm having trouble finding the View Options for a CD. I want to sort
the songs so they appear in order of track numbers, but it seems as though
they want to appear by name or as a manual order. How would I get to the
"View Options" dialog to fix it? I tried pressing Control+J, but nothing
happens. Also, is there a way for me to fix it so the CD appears in the
"source List", along with Music, Purchased, and all the other playlists I
have? In older versions of ITunes, Specifically ITunes 8.1 and earlier,
there was a tree view of items, the Source List, and when I inserted a CD,
the CD would appear in that source list. Now in newer versions of ITunes, I
expect it to appear in the list of Playlists, apparently the new-fangled
version of the Source List, but it's not there.

What this option does is to reduce the current number of tasks being
performed by the processor at a given time. It is related to Windows
Explorer. Often, when people get a message saying that a program is not
responding, this fix seems to help.

RE: How to do a JAWS repair

2015-09-09 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
Dacia, the best way to do a JAWS repair is to download the build of JAWS
that you are running. For instance if you're trying to repair JAWS 16, go
to the web-site and download the current build of JAWS 16. Once you have it
downloaded, navigate to the place where you downloaded the file. Then you
will want to copy the path. You will do this by pressing shift plus the
applications key. Then navigate to the option that says copy path. Once
you select this option by pressing enter, the file name is copied to your
clipboard. Now, press Windows plus the letter R to bring up the run dialog
box. Press control plus the letter V to paste the name of the file into the
run dialog. Then, you will need to enter the following switch command at
the end of the file name.
/type repair
Then press enter, or tab to Ok, and press enter. The JAWS repair process
should begin.
Hope this helps!

Uninstalling older versions of JAWS.

2015-09-08 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
Hi folks! It's been awhile, and I can't remember the best way to uninstall
older versions of JAWS. Should I leave behind the shared components or
uninstall them too? Any suggestions?

I think it depends largely on the type of subscription you sign up for. If
you have total access, that will include all of the pro sports like the NFL,
MLB etc. Very few college games are streamed on the on-line player.

Does their online only version give you most of the sports channels? I got
one of those offers to reactivate an inactive radio, but streaming was about
all I ever used lately. The iOS version worked reasonably well. I could
search for Packers and turn that on. The web player isn't something I've
done much with lately.

I understand about the NFL. I think you're right on the cost part. I'm not
even sure it will be accessible on the phone this year. A lot of college
football broadcasts, including Wisconsin is available on the Tune-in App
this year.

I cancelled my other radio I didn't have much use for, but I thought of
getting the online only subscription. The way I see it, the only thing when
it comes to sports that one can get there that costs more elsewhere is the
NFL games. I have other services for music, but I want to hear my local
teams. Nascar appears to be taken care of through Tunein's app, and I
believe the Badgers' broadcasts were on iHeart.

I just did the online chat with Sirius XM. That part is accessible. They
told me that the streaming only plan doesn't include NFL. If I'm not
mistaken, I think if I play the game and take their 5 month offer to
reactivate the old XM radio for $5 a month and add streaming to that, I can
do it with select, as I had listened to the Packers with that package before
I cancelled. I think I'm right in the idea that most of the other sports I
want are on Tunein or iHeart except MLB and the NFL, and I already have the
At Bat subscription. It is too bad that they don't have a sports and talk
package since I get my music fix elsewhere.

If it is a hyperlink, you can probably use JAWS Key or Insert plus F7, to
bring up a list of links in the document.

I believe you can use jawsKey F5 to bring up a list of form fields and the
link will be one of them. You can then just tab to the ok button and press

I can't figure out how to click on a hyperlink in Word 2010. I believe mouse

RE: JAWS and Windows 10 issue

2015-08-14 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
I'm going to make an educated guess that it may have to do with the types of
video drivers that are installed in the different computers. I have
experienced JAWS not identifying the password field at start-up. It never
reads that to me correctly either. So far, not a big fan of Windows 10.
I'm hopeful it will get better. I seem to remember Windows 8 starting out
like this too.

Hi Mike,

Well, I am not getting the same problem that you are getting with your jaws
cursor. Even though, I have found other problems, but curiously the problems
are different in 4 different computers. Would be interesting to know why
jaws is working differently in 4 different computers, when all windows 10
installation are new, and all jaws installation are new also. A couple of
hours ago, I installed jwindows 10 in a new computer, Lenovo desktop, and
jaws has been working very good. I am noticing a problem when I press alt
tab when I want to go to other window, but it doesn't happen always. I am
still noticing that when the computer is in the log in window, jaws is not
able to read the text field where we should type the password. If I press
tab, nothing happen, if I try to use insert tab to read where is the Pc
cursor, nothing happen. I have to press alt tab two times to make jaws catch
the control where is the password field.
I really don't understand why all these problems are different in each
computer.

Subject: dual source headsets, where to get?

I am wondering how you go about getting a dual source headset to be able to
hear JFW on one side and have a phone call on the other side. Even better,
it would be nice if the microphone sent its output back to the phone. I
tried getting quotes on a sight called Thumbtack, and I spoke with a guy who
answered who does audio engineering on the side. He thinks he could make a
cable where I could plug any headset mic in to do this, as long as it had
the combination jack that combines the headset and mic on it. If one was
going to use a phone that has the same kind of jack as the iPhone, which
uses the 4-band, 3.5mm connector, does such a product exist? The closes
thing I found years ago was a discontinued Plantronics headset, but it only
had the RJ headset plug for the phone side, which may or may not be able to
be adapted. Also, I'd like something less expensive than that. I spoke with
Plantronics the other day, and it appeared that what they may have had has
been discontinued so long ago that it isn't in their system any more. The
guy told me that the only dual source headsets like that have to be manually
switched between phone call and other source, which doesn't work if you
switch to read something and the person on the other end says something you
missed. What are people doing to achieve this these days?

I just spoke with them. The lady I got didn't think at first that this one
did two sources at all, but I had her look at the features part. She said
that they have no 3.5mm connection adapter for the phone side, but she said
she would email their shipping people to see if they can get such a thing.
So much for Plantronics telling me that no such product existed.

Oh, OK. I wonder if they make a way to have it hook into the 4 band 3.5mm
jacks on the phone side? I think I get how this is supposed to work where
some phones had the removable cord on the handset part, and you plug a
 cable
from the amp part into this instead, and the original phone cable in to
 the
other side, sort of like answering machines did.

The Amplifier is for the phone itself. The Amp plugs into where the
 handset

JAWS and Windows 10 issue

2015-08-13 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
Hi folks! Not sure if this is a JAWS thing or not, but it seems like I
cannot use my JAWS cursor to read things in Windows 10. Is there some
setting that I need to adjust for this to happen? I have really enjoyed the
helpful information that has been passed along by those of you who are
running Windows 10. Thanks a lot for the feedback!

Tom, Belarc Advisor is a program that is free, and gives you all of your
computer specs, in an easy to navigate document. It does not share any of
your private information. It gives you a lot of good information about your

RE: Installation of Windows 10

2015-08-07 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
I wanted to point out something regarding Narrator. I have tried using the
Windows key plus Enter command to launch it on both my Windows 7 and 8.1
computers. It does not launch it on my Windows 7 machine, but it does on my
Windows 8.1 machine. I'm bringing this up for the benefit of those who are
upgrading from Windows 8.1 to version 10. Windows key plus enter may be an
option for you. I don't mean to confuse the issue at all, but did want to
share my experience here.

Subject: RE: Installation of Windows 10

Hi,
There is no command to restart Narrator.
Speaking of installing Windows, I'll go through some FAQ's I got from this
list in this email:
* Compatible JFW release: Please use JAWS 16.0.4350 or later, or if you'd
like to wait, please hold off until JAWS 17 comes out (public beta or
official build will do).
* Clean install versus in-place upgrade: You can perform an in-place upgrade
all by yourself with a screen reader running. Your computer will restart
several times, and after some restarts, you'll hear silence from your
computer. Once this happens, press Windows+ENTER to launch Narrator, and if
your sound card is detected, Microsoft David will come up talking.
* Multiple clean install options: There are two ways of performing clean
install: bootable media or from Media Creation Tool. If using Media Creation
tool option, the steps are same as above, except none of your programs and
settings will be kept. If doing bootable media installation, then you'll
indeed need some sighted assistance for the first few prompts to choose your
language, entering your product key (don't have to enter it), choosing a
partition and others. Once your computer restarts several times, follow the
steps above to finish installing using Narrator (Windows 10 will come in
either a DVD or on a flash drive).
* Some finds with JAWS 16.0.4350: My brief testing shows the following (at
least on my computer):
1. In Start search box, JAWS does not announce search results automatically.
2. JAWS does not announce Action Center notifications, aa variation of
Windows 8.x's toast notifications. They are toasts in disguise because you
can press Windows+V to move to and interact with them, and press Windows+A
to open Action Center. These are basic issues that should have been fixed in
the first place, thus (in my opinion) disqualifying JAWS from being
compatible with Windows 10 for now (I'm sure FS is working on it).
3. You can use TAB and Shift+TAB to move among links in Microsoft Edge (no
virtual cursor, no forms mode, no support for MathML yet). There were tweets
floating around which criticized FS for not supporting Edge yet, but that's
expected (the biggest nightmare for screen reader vendors is whenever
Microsoft comes out with a new version of Windows; Windows 8.x users tasted
this, and it'll happen more frequently now that Microsoft will be updating
Windows constantly to add new features which may break accessibility).
For resident geeks here:
* In order to let your app support Windows 10, you need to modify app
manifest in your application, which is what JAWS 16.0.4350 could have done.
* UIA (User Interface Automation) is more prominent now, with universal apps
using UIA.
* Microsoft Edge is filled with UIA objects, thus you need to know how UIA
works (at least a high-level overview) when scripting for Windows 10 apps
and for supporting Edge.
If you'd like to hear Windows 10 in action, there are podcasts devoted to
this (including mine). I talked about Windows 10 (although from another
screen reader's perspective) on Tek Talk for August 3rd, which can be found
at www.accessibleworld.org.
Cheers,
Joseph
P.S. I believe we have some Windows Insiders who uses JAWS, so you can ask
them also.

RE: repairing jaws 16 on windows 10

2015-08-06 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
Mark, if you need to do a JAWS repair, first make sure you have the
executable file for the version of JAWS. For example, if you have JAWS
16.0.4350 installed on your computer, you would need to download that build
from the FS web-site. Once you have this file downloaded, you will need to
highlight the file. Once you're focused on the file name, press shift plus
the applications key. Then scroll down to the option that says copy path.
Press enter on this option. The path name of the file is now copied to your
clipboard. Next, press Windows key plus r to bring up the run dialogue.
Press control plus the letter V to paste in the path name, and then add this
command to the end of the line. /type repair. Then you will hear a
series of clicks while JAWS repairs your installed version. Hope this
helps!

RE: windows 10

2015-07-28 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
Drew, it really depends on what you like to do when using your computer.
From all accounts, most of what we as screen reader users do with Windows 7
and 8.1, we should be able to do with Windows 10. The new Windows 10 has a
new web browser called the Edge, which may not deliver the best web
experience in the beginning. You can learn more about that by listening to
the Windows 10 discussion on Fs Cast EP 109. Glen Gordon was a guest on
that show, and he talks in depth about Windows 10. Also, from what he said
on the show, when you first install Windows 10, you won't have JAWS speech.
You will have to use narrator at first, and then once the set up wizzard has
finished, you can run JAWS and it will work, as long as you have the latest
build of JAWS 16. Magic users must be running version 13. I am a little
concerned about how frequently Microsoft plans to update this new version of
Windows. That was also discussed on the FS cast episode I referenced
earlier. I wonder how that will affect JAWS performance or any screen
reader or magnifier performance for that matter. Hope this helps!

Actually I think you may be able to do that. I press Alt plus the letter F
for the file menu. Next, I arrow down a couple of times to the open tab.
When I get there, I press right arrow, and then use right arrow key again to
find the recent items. You can use up and down arrows to navigate through
the list of the recent documents you've opened.

Andre, I believe Brian is asking about a feature in the file menu of
previous versions of MS Word. If you pressed alt-f and arrowed up, you'd
encounter the last five or so documents you'd worked on and could just press
enter to open the one you wanted.

Brian, I'm sorry, but I believe this feature no longer exists in Word 2010.

You should be able to change the keyboard lay-out to laptop in the basic
settings of JAWS. Then, the capslock key should work as the insert key

Hi

Work gave me a hp ultrabook laptop, whichhas no insert button, or page

Insert is FN plus ctrl and print screen button, does anyone know another way
of doing this? I've tried capslock plus print screen, this doesn't work.
Also when I'm typing the cursor jumps about, consequently I make mistakes.
Is there a way of disabling the mouse? I've had this done, but once I
restart the laptop the mouse pad is active again.

I would really really appreciate some help with this.

Kind Regards, Hassan.

facebook is accessible through Internet Explorer. Turn off the virtual PC

comment, like, and post your status. Am I missing something?

I agree that accessibility is rarely a priority in modern web page
development. The pages are designed for visual appeal first, and retrofitted
for accessibility later. Facebook is a clear example of this. Nonetheless, I
can use it for the common facebook tasks that I need.

Using JAWS with Citrix

2015-07-09 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
Good morning all! I am trying to learn more about using JAWS with Citrix,
as I am working on a project that will be implementing this for some of our
employees. I have read all of the documentation, and feel fairly
comfortable with how it's supposed to work. I have read the documentation
from FS, and from Citrix as well. Now, I'm wanting to get some feedback
from those of you who have used JAWS with Citrix in the past. I have this
feeling that the documentation is not covering everything that I need to
know. I'd like to know from users how their experience has gone using JAWS
in this environment. Any feedback good or bad would be appreciated. Many
thanks!

The male voice is Tom from the Realspeak set of voices, so it's like

Certainly it's not as good as a human narrator. Having said that, I

Also, when I close the book and reopen it, I'm at least at the top

Hello, everyone.

I'm still having issues typing characters into the edit box when on the
internet with my home Windows 7 PC.

I can arrow down or tab until I hear the forms mode sound, but when I type,
nothing gets entered into the edit box.

I had someone sighted check, and nothing gets entered onto the screen when I
do the typing in forms mode, even though the sound indicates I'm in forms
mode.

I find the issue both in Internet Explorer and in Firefox. And, I have
tried performing searches on several different web sites where info needs to
be entered into the search box.

Is there a Jaws or other setting I should check to troubleshoot the issue?

For the record, I'm using Jaws 14 on this particular computer.

Thank you!

RE: Microsoft Dynamics CRM

2015-06-15 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
I have seen the Microsoft Dynamic program in a call center environment. I
have several clients who run this using JAWS. We did have to do some
scripting for the combo boxes that are used in the CRM, but I believe that
was in large part due to the way the developers created the drop down menus.
It does work fairly well with JAWS, but again, the developers need to be
advised to properly code it correctly. When I say code, I mean tag buttons
and labels with text so that JAWS will read the element name properly. Hope
this helps!

Greetings.

Does anyone happen to have experience using this program with JAWS?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Dynamics_CRM

By the end of the year, my company of affiliation plans to have rolled out a
newly self-developed program to handle CRM, and I have been invited to take
part in a beta test so this program can be made accessible. So for those in
tech-driven, compliance-oriented sales environments who have experience with
client relationship management software, what programs do you recommend as
being most compatible with JAWS off the shelf? Or which ones can be most
easily scripted?

Thanks to anyone who sees fit to help answer my queries.

Splitting JAWS to one side of my headset using virtual audio cable.

2015-06-10 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
Hi folks! I'm wondering if anyone has ever done this. So, I am attempting
to split the JAWS audio to the left or right channel of my headphones, and
having the computer sounds on the other side. Is this possible using the
virtual audio cable? I know we have some audio professionals on this list.
Anyone ever had success doing this?

RE: Update On Windows 7 Home Computer Situation

2015-06-04 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
Dr. Tom, I would say the free version of Avast should serve your needs well
at home. The paid version may offer more features, but if all you want is
virus protection, the free version should be fine. I'm glad to hear that
your Windows machine is free of malware now. Malware Bytes is a good
program and should serve your needs well moving forward.

Subject: Update On Windows 7 Home Computer Situation

Hello, everyone.

As some of you may recall, I had been having multiple problems with my main
Windows 7 home computer. As a result of the many very helpful suggestions
that I have received from a number of list members, both on and off list, I
think I have finally gotten the computer back up and running.

First, with the help of an I T technician from my University, Malwarebytes
has been installed and run several times. As a result, I believe I have now
finally gotten rid of those audio clips that were randomly appearing from
time to time.

Regarding my Outlook 2010 issue, where Outlook was often not launching
correctly, and Jaws was extremely sluggish, I conpacted the .pst Outlook
data file. As some had warned, this took very long, but that file is now
much more manageable in size. Specifically, it has been reduced from its
original 10 gig size to approximately 730 megabytes. In addition, based on
a suspicion that my A V G anti-virus software was conflicting with Outlook,
I uninstalled that program, and have gone to the free version of Avast, at
least for now. This seems to work well, and does not appear to be creating
any issues of concern. In fact, Outlook, Avast, and Jaws seem to play very
nicely together.

I still have a few things to decide:

1. Do I continue with the free version of Avast, or purchase the more
robust program?

2. Do I try to delete Outlook add-ins, and the journal, or just leave well
enough alone for now?; and

3. How often do I want to schedule the compacting of that Outlook PST file
that gave me all the trouble?

Anyway, I'm making progress now, and appreciate all of the help that I have
received regarding the difficulties I was having.

Sincerely,

Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan

The one thing I find annoying with my HP laptop is that it does not have the
context menu key. I have used a utility to remap the print screen key to
perform that function but it is certainly not as convenient as a proper
context menu key. My guess, however, is that a windows 7 laptop is probably
old enough that it would have this key, so long as you are talking about a
full size laptop and not a compact model.

Depending on how you intend to use it, maybe not many changes at all. I say
that because I am not sure if you plan on using a desktop keyboard with it,
or a Bluetooth keyboard. Some models have the number pad on them, so I'm
not sure if your new laptop will or not. If you choose to use the laptop
layout, the JAWS key, or the insert key will be the capslock key. You will
also find a list of laptop keystrokes in the JAWS help menu. Good luck!

it. You should be familiar with the others, as they are the standard
 ones used in the industry.

Any advice would be greatly appreciate it. I know there are seminars

 production?
  Thank you,

Chat programs with JAWS

2015-05-27 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
Hi folks! I'm wondering what chat program is the best to use with JAWS. I
would like to find one that works well with JAWS on the computer, and
equally as well on the mobile side, either with an iPhone or Android. I
know we don't necessarily discuss mobile phones on this list, so I don't
want this to go off topic. Any thoughts on chat clients that work well with
JAWS would be most helpful. Thanks!

RE: Mirror display driver not installed correctly

Hello Rob! I've seen this before. If you go under your device manager, and
select display adapters, you will probably see the Freedom Scientific mirror
display driver. I would remove it, and also uninstall all versions of JAWS.
I would then reinstall the JAWS version you want to use. Sounds like the
display driver has been corrupted somehow. I hope this helps.

RE: JAWS 16 and Itunes 12.

2015-05-20 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
Justin, I find iTunes to be fairly accessible without any scripts. You can
label your tracks if you wish. You will first need to highlight the track,
and then press the applications key, and arrow down until JAWS announces
Get Info. Once this menu options, tab over until you land in the edit box
for the track name. You should be able to name the track, and change the
artist name if you need to do that. I hope this information is helpful.

Hello listmembers,

I'm sure this has been covered in past Digests. However, it wasn't until
recently that I started reviewing the posts more regularly with much
appreciation for a community whose collective knowledge of JAWS and its
interaction with many programs/applications is impressive.

Until my recent purchase of JFW16, I had limited access to Itunes 12. I know
that the Do It Blind site has downloadable scripts that allow greater access
with Itunes 12 and JFW15 and 16. Alternatively, are there some Hotkey
commands that have been created recently that I can use, or is purchasing
the Do It Now scripts the way to go?

I just want to be able to label tracks as I used to be able to do with
older versions of Itunes. I also want to transfer playlists from my PC to my
Iphone, without having to rely on sighted assistance for the final transfer
step in the process.

Any and all help/direction is appreciated.

Blessings to all, Justin

RE: Inquiry about the use of Jaws with Oracle database

2015-05-16 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
Dave, I wanted to ask that when you had the HTML overlay to work with, did you
find Oracle to be friendly with JAWS in that cenario? I ask this because I
may have a situation where some of my clients have to use an application like
this. Oracle data base, but with an HTML front end overlay. I'm thinking that
this should work with JAWS, provided the developers code it correctly. I'm
concerned that we may have to do some scripting to make some of the elements
work though. Thoughts?

Sad to say, that in my past work experience with Oracle 11 it was a very
difficult interface. the only way I was able to use it was if there was an
html-based front-end overlay to the database structure. In other words, the
actual Oracle interface was very unfriendly, in spite of all the Java plug-ins
and access bridge. I usually tried to avoid using it whenever possible.

Given that everything oracle related is java based I would suspect
that it is fairly spotty, but it has been far longer than since I have
gone blind that I have done anything with Oracle products so can't
really say from personal experience. Even when I could see I was not
nearly as impressed with the Oracle management tools as the equivalent
from MS.

I do know that oracle has a command line tool similar to MS' sqlcmd
and I would expect that to work fine with jaws.

Unfortunately, the release notes for this update are very generic; all FS says
is that it corrects an issue that had been made known to the company through
automatic error reporting. While this suggests that the update is minor, the
timing of its release is quite thought-provoking, as it hasn't been too long
since the previous update came out. Besides, why would FS release an update
that addresses only one issue? To my knowledge, this has never happened before.

Hello, everyone.

You may recall that, a few days ago, I was having trouble with a program on
my computer running in the background, and interfering with Jaws.

Originally, I thought the problem was with Java.

Apparently, the problem was not with Java, but was with the latest version
of the AVG anti-virus software. I think the version number is AVG 15.

Last night, an AVG update occurred, which literally made Jaws totally
unusable.

I've now completely uninstalled AVG, and Jaws works perfectly.

Has anyone else had this problem with AVG, and if so, how did you deal with
it?

If AVG is not the most Jaws-friendly anti-virus program to be using with
Jaws, does someone have recommendations for a more Jaws-friendly anti-virus
program?

I'd prefer to stick with free anti-virus software if possible.

Any help would be appreciated, since I am not comfortable running this
computer without anti-virus software.

For the record, I'm using Jaws 14 on this windows 7 computer.

Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan

Not sure about the games in the link I sent yesterday, but there are many
multi player games that one or more people can play on the same computer.
One good website is for Jim Kitchens audio games, it contains games such as
monopoly, game of life and many more that are multi player and also some
really good fun single player games such as golf, driving games and many
more. All games are again free on his site , although all of jim kitchen's
games don't actually require jaws as they are all self-voicing using the
PC's built in voice called SAPPI 5. Below is the link to his games .

As for the spoonville games, I took a look at their website and they have a

Hi All,

I am interested in turning off updates, like from Dell, etc. I am wondering
if the constant message on my screen indicating an update, could be part of
the reason my computer keeps freezing for short periods of time? Your input
on how to turn off updates would be appreciated.

Thanks,

RE: question on call center applications`

2015-05-13 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
Tom, all call centers are different in terms of the types of applications that
they use. Some platforms are more complicated than others. I've seen JAWS
work really well in some call center environments, and in others, scripts had
to be utilized. It all depends on the types of applications you are using, and
if they are coded correctly.

 Thanks, everyone.

Now here's a slightly related question. MS has their own keyboard
interface for the ribbon UI, as in Alt then H, O, I. But you can
also turn on the JAWS rinnon UI to make the ribbon feel more like a
system of menus and submenus. I can see how both might be useful,
but they seem to be mutually exclusive. When I turn on the JAWS
ribbon UI, the MS ribbon keyboard inbterface seems to stop working.

Does anyone know how to set up JAWS so that both the MS interface
and the JAWS interface to the ribbon UI are available? Then I could
choose to use one or the other interface, depending on which is most
 convenient, personal preference, etc.

My guess is that this is simply not possible. I have to choose one
 or the other.

Hi Keith ,

Not sure about the games in the link I sent yesterday, but there are many
multi player games that one or more people can play on the same computer.
One good website is for Jim Kitchens audio games, it contains games such as
monopoly, game of life and many more that are multi player and also some
really good fun single player games such as golf, driving games and many
more. All games are again free on his site , although all of jim kitchen's
games don't actually require jaws as they are all self-voicing using the
PC's built in voice called SAPPI 5. Below is the link to his games .

As for the spoonville games, I took a look at their website and they have a

self-voicing and use the built in computer voice, also all the blind games

CTRL + L is the command you use in Firefox to type in an address. In ff,

RE: a problem I'm having

2015-04-24 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
If you're using the latest version of JAWS, that's probably due to the fact
that JAWS stops working, and then restarts itself. It happens to me all the
time. I understand the reasoning behind it, but you still don't have speech
during that minute or so. You're wondering if your computer has frozen or
what's going on. FS built that into JAWS 15 and 16. In 15, you can control
when JAWS restarts. In version 16, it restarts for you.

RE: Working from home

2015-04-21 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
I currently work from home using a VPN. This gives me access to the files
that I need on my work's shared drive. As for Tandem, I would say that's a
bad idea. If for whatever reason, the connection is interrupted, someone
from work would have to go to that computer and help you reestablish the
connection. Tandem isn't really designed for that. It might work in a
pinch, but I'm not sure if it would be reliable for an entire work day.

The other issue would be that you likely have to share your login password
with whoever happens to be around, which isn't a great idea. An empty audio
cable in the headphone jack would mute the chatter the work side would hear,
but I'm not sure if you can access Tandem right at the login prompt.

From my experience with Linc, it works fairly well with JAWS. The only

I can tell you the way I do this, and maybe it will help you. I open a new
message, and type the names of the people I want to send the message to in
the two field. After typing in the first few letters of the name, the email
usually pops up for me. When it does, I press enter, and then type the next
name. I repeat the process until I have al of the addresses up on the two
field. Outlook automatically separates the email addresses by using a
semicolon. I hope this helps you.

Hello list,

So I would like to send an email to multiple recipients, but am not having
success with a certain method. I know I can from within a new email message
go to the to button and look up people to add from my address book, but I
find that to be too tedious and time consuming.

I’m trying to add a bunch of people by first pressing the control button and
then going down my address book with the down arrow and pressing the
spacebar on those who I wish to email. I guess it would be the command for
selecting noncontiguous items in a list. Anyway, After I select the people I
wish to email, I press the control+N command but instead of an email message
popping up with the previously selected contact emails in the to field, I
get the prompt to create a new contact.

I’ve tried different versions of the same. By selecting my contacts then
tabbing around in the ribbons to select the new mail option and so on, but
no dice.

I got this step by step instruction online, but so far, I’ve had no luck.

Am I somehow missing a step or can someone enlighten me as to how to best do
this? This is not for distribution lists as I would like to email different
groupings of people at different times.

I’m using Outlook 2010 and the latest Jaws 16.

Thank you,.

RE: screen sharing (goto meeting)

Hello! I think that the web-ex training
Should not be an issue. Perhaps, you could convince the folks at HSN to
allow you to do the assessment over the phone. Also a very good accessible
way to share web-sites is through a site called Talking Communities. I've
used it before, and I know that Freedom Scientific uses it for their
webinars. It is very good.

RE: youtube and itunes questions

iTunes works really well with JAWS. The developers of iTunes have not
addressed the metadata issue in the latest build of iTunes 12. This means
you cannot edit the information on specific using JAWS. JAWs just reports
that these fields are read only fields, when visually they are not. I have
reported this to Apple accessibility support. I'm hoping they will address
this in the next update. Other than that, you can get around iTunes pretty
well using JAWS.

Carlos, I have seen JAWS work well in call centers. It really depends on the
company, and the applications that they use. For example, some call centers
make you log into your phone, using software. This means, you have to end
calls, and do call related tasks, using some type of call dashboard. I have

-Original Message-
From: Jfw [mailto:jfw-boun...@lists.the-jdh.com] On Behalf Of Paul Martz via

Hi all. Has anyone else noticed that the tandem controller can occasionally
lose the ability to control the target system?

I'm on the controller end of the tandem session, and when I initially
connect with my client's target system, I'm able to control it just fine.
Windows key opens the start menu, ALT+F opens the application file menu,
etc. But after our session has gone on for a while (more than 20 or 30
minutes), eventually it's as if tandem is not sending my keystrokes to the
target computer any longer. They are completely ignored.

I'm partially sighted, so have video enabled. When the keystrokes stop
working, I have found I can still control the target computer by using the
mouse. So, mouse movements and clicks still go to the target, but keystrokes
don't.

I've tried pausing and resuming the tandem session, but that doesn't help.
Stopping and restarting a new tandem session does work around the issue, but
this is not very practical.

I'm on the latest JAWS version, and the problem seems to occur regardless of
the target computer JAWS version.

Anyone else experiencing this?

RE: JAWS, Skype, and other audio/video files

The only way that I have been able to accomplish this is with the use of a
mixer. It's been a while since I've had to do this, but I know that I had
to route the audio from my sound card back through my mixer. On the
surface, that may sound like a bad idea do to receiving feedback, but with
my mixer, I was able to pull it off. I believe I also muted the playback of
the audio back through the soundcard that I was using at the time. I think
it really would have to depend on the type of sound card you're using, and
if you have a mixer, or could use one.

Am I able to do that, even if I have a screen reader such as JAWS? If so,

I tried testing it out with my friend by going to YouTube and playing a

which was fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Subject: Outlook 2010 and spell check

Heya folks,

For ages now using Jaws 15 and now latest Jaws 16 on a windows 7 64bit PC
and Outlook 2010 75% of the time when I use spell check in Outlook 2010 Jaws
loses speech when I just tab past the first couple of options e.g language,
ignore etc. Speech seems to freeze on the Outlook program itself till I do a
windows M key and return to the desktop. Does anybody else have this issue?
Is it fixed in Jaws 16 as didnt seem to be fixed in any of the 15 updates.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Jim

RE: Outlook 2010 searches

2015-02-11 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
Hi! For me, I use the tab key to find the search box in Outlook, and type
what I'm searching for. For instance, if I want to search by name, I'll
type the person's name. If I know what the subject is, I can search that
way. I enter the terms, and press search. I wait a few seconds, and then
tab over to the results. I can then find the email that I'm looking for
that way.

Hi all. The other day someone posted instructions on searching email inbox
items. It was said one way was to use the start key and edit field to enter
searchable items. I found this works but cannot do anything with the list
of items found. Cant open any of the emails or delete them. Though I went
through the steps to do each. Am I missing something or what can the start
key edit field search engine be used for?

Issue with creating accessible PDF files.

2015-02-11 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
Hi folks! I'm having an issue with creating an accessible PDF document. I
am able to create the document, and save it as a PDF file. When I pull up
the PDF file, JAWS reads it, but I'm noticing that the words are run
together, and JAWS tries to pronounce the words as one word, because there
is no space between the two or three words. It appears that JAWS is reading
this correctly. My concern is that somehow in the translation, the words
are being run together. How do you keep this from happening? Is there a
way to make these words have spaces between them?

RE: iTunes query i hope someone can answer

2015-02-09 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
Joseph, check out the information below. I pasted this from an email I
received on Friday. Maybe it will help you. Good luck!

After upgrading to Apple iTunes v. 12.1, it is no longer possible to
navigate the iTunes interface with JAWS. This affects 64-bit Windows with a
64-bit install of iTunes. This is an Apple iTunes change, and will be fixed
in a future iTunes update.
In the meantime, those affected can install a different bit-flavor of
iTunes:

1.. Go to the Apple support page: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1784.

2.. Download the iTunes64setup.exe installer. This download provides a
32-bit version of iTunes that installs on 64-bit Windows.

  3.. Run the install.
NOTE: you can identify the correct version by the name of the installer,
which is iTunes64setup.exe. The regular 64-bit installer which introduced
the problem is named iTunes6464Setup.exe.

Need help with creating accessible PDF files with JAWS.

2015-02-05 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
Hi folks! I'm asking this question on behalf of a colleague of mine who is
having difficulty with JAWS accessible PDF files. From what he says, when
he makes the PDF file accessible for JAWS users, the text disappears for
sighted viewers. In other words, no one besides JAWS users can read the
contents of the PDF file. Has anyone encountered this error, and if so, how
did you resolve it?

If memory serves me correctly, you need to download and install a driver
from the Hims-Inc. web-site so that your braille edge will work properly.
They may have changed it, but if not, look for the braille edge USb.zip
file. Good luck!

RE: Jaws won't start automatically in windows 8.1

2015-01-29 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
I'm wondering if there is something with the group policy set-up on your
computer that is blocking JAWS from starting up properly. You may want to
contact Microsoft Accessibility and explaint o them your situation. I've
seen this before on network computers, but never on a home computer.

I'm very glad it works for you, but that doesn't really help. Thanks,
anyway, but it looks like this is just something I'll have to get used to
giving up now that I'm using Windows 8.1. I haven't had this issue on any
other version of Windows other than 8 and up.

I know about the Automatically start Jaws settings in the Basics

It's not a problem to run it manually, but it is more of a very very
annoying inconvenience. I also notice that neither the latest
versions of NVDA nor Window-Eyes has this problem, and both auto start
just fine.

So Does anyone have any suggestions? Could the Windows 8.1 UAC be
 interfering somehow?

 Thanks.

Need help with a JAWS mirror display driver issue.

2015-01-14 Thread Michael Mote via Jfw
Hi folks! I'm not sure what to do in my situation. Let me describe what's
happening as best I can.

I went to install JAWS 15 for a client of mine, who was running 14. Before
my attempt to install 15, his system was running fine. After I initially
tried to install the 32 bit version of JAWS, I received an error message
saying that the mirror display driver was not properly installed. I have
tried to repair JAWS several times, but with no success. I did this on the
advice of the Freedom Scientific technical support team. This client of
mine runs both JAWS and Magic. I'm reaching out to the list to see how I
can restore the mirror driver so that it works with JAWS. I've tried all of
the conventional ways that I know of. Can someone help me?

Hello! If JAWS stops speaking you can try this using JAWS 15, and up.
Press Jaws Key plus Windows key plus F4. I've used this with a lot of
success. You may get a window asking you to send an error report. You can
choose to send it or not. If you do, the code is sent to Freedom
Scientific. Hope this helps!

Hello. I have used two blue tooth head set models with JAWS, and have had
good success. I have used the 590 Plantronics headset, and I currently use

more delay, but it's still a pretty good option.
