Re: smart navigation?

2015-11-28 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
From what I can tell smart navigation is not really meant for normal
websites (despite the fact that it was enabled by default). It is
instead meant for certain types of web applications and the like where
controls of various types dominate over text.

Re: Languages

2015-11-22 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
To create a profile go to the jaws menu then Options -> voices ->
Voice adjustment.

To change profiles I use the jaws+ctrl+s combination.

Note that if your normal profile is based on the same synthesizer that
the new voices use and you use the windows language profile method
then jaws will automatically switch voices in programs like Word that
have support for multiple input languages. Meaning that if you switch
the windows language and start typing and the current jaws synthesizer
supports that language then jaws will simply switch to that language.

To switch the windows language (after using the region and languages
control panel to add one), use alt+left shift to toggle through the
available languages.

I took a look at eloq.sbl and the default list with jfw17 is in fact
quite a bit shorter than for earlier versions. I did not examine the
files closely enough to determine which characters were removed.

jfw16 had about 190 characters for English in the default eloq.sbl
file, but jfw17 has only130.

Re: Languages

2015-11-14 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
I'm not sure that it can be done with a single hotkey but you can
change voice profiles with jaws+scrl+s, and you can create a voice
profile that uses a different language synthesizer by default.

But I would say that is generally the wrong approach, instead I would
add Japanese to the region and language settings control panel, and if
you then switch between the system regions programs that can deal with
that will automatically pick up on it.

If you add an additional language profile like that you can then
switch between them with alt+left shift.

You have to enable Vocalizer Direct separate from Expressive in

Can you tell us in which very early-on JAWS Version: 17 update will

waiting to install Windows 10; but, it cannot be helped!

Re: merge utility

2015-11-05 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
That would be okay but I have thousands of dictionary entries (enough
so that I run into the hard limits of 2000 entries for each of the

problems each year as FS expands the default dictionary (and
unfortunately most of those additions are for languages other than
English and so I end up deleting them).

Re: Computer sound dipping with Jaws 17

2015-10-31 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
I don't normally use eloquence for say all operations (I use eloquence
mainly in programming environments while using a natural sounding
synth for things where I expect large amounts of normal text) but just
did one and did not notice any volume inconsistency. The only thing
that did seem different was that the speech rate did not increase as
the text was read, which was a nice improvement from prior jaws
versions.

Re: Using Jaws with Visual Studio 2013 and Visual Micro for Arduino

2015-10-10 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
VS (especially VS2013) works very well with jaws, it is only the
plug-in (which I have not used so can't help with) that seems to be
the problem.

Even VS2015 works reasonably well now that I have written some basic
scripts to get rid of the line numbers and to handle debugging events.
Not anything like the packaged 2013 scripts that can also deal with
the form designer, most of what I do is native c++ so the designer
isn't much of a concern to me.

Re: JAWS scripting

2015-09-19 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
I've never had need of them myself but for the first problem, if the
information is always in the same spot on screen you might want to
look at the jaws' frames facility. As I understand it a frame is sort
of like a virtual window jaws lays on top of the real window and you
can then get the text within the frame or be informed when the text
changes.

And for the dialer, again I've never had need of it myself but there
is a package called hot spot clicker maintained by a list member that
may be of assistance, again especially if the window always appears at
the same screen coordinates (or possibly at the same offset from its
parent).

As far as the list box goes have you tried assigning the listbox class
to the control? (Admittedly a long shot for apps written using modern
methods but still worth a try).

something like "g Force driver download" (not sure about the leading

Also, if you are using MS word or word pad as the editor, you can
produce accented characters by hitting ctrl+ followed by a
letter key, for instance to get "a with accent" using word you would
type ctrl+', a. At least this works when using a standard us keyboard
layout. It unfortunately does not work in the regular windows edit
control, or the custom edit used by Firefox.

Re: How to get location from File Save dialog

2015-08-27 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
It's not super easy but still fairly easy, if you tab through the
dialog controls, just after Cancel in the default dialog there is a
Desktop split button, from there each time you hit right arrow jaws
will read a single path component.

I'm pretty sure the save as dialog has been like that since at least Vista.

Also, you can right click on that desktop button and there is an Edit
address choice, that allows you to hear the entire path at one go.

On 8/27/15, Paul Martz via Jfw jfw@lists.the-jdh.com wrote:
 Hi all.

Is there a quick way to get JAWS to read the location (i.e., library name
 or
filesystem path) while in a File Save dialog?

Some apps use the Documents library as the default. Other apps have their
own location as the default. If you change the location when you save a
file, this is sticky for some apps, and for other apps it is not sticky.
Even if it is sticky, if it's been a while since I saved a file in the app,
I may have forgotten where I last saved the file. So the bottom line is:
Just about any time I save a file, I'd like to quickly find out where the
File Save dialog is set to save the file, before I click the save button.

It'd be nice if I could just hit JAWSKEY + T, but unfortunately, the
 current
location path is not displayed in the title bar of the File Save dialog,
 so this doesn't work.

The File Save dialog typically opens with focus in the file name field.
The only way I know to obtain the location is to SHIFT + TAB about a half
dozen times until I get to the confusingly titles toolbar desktop split
button, press spacebar, then hit JAWSKEY + UP ARROW to read the current
line. Note that the number of times I have to hit SHIFT + TAB to get to the
toolbar desktop split button is variable, as the number of controls
 varies
depending on the currently set location. So this method is time consuming
 and rather a PITA.

Making matters worse, many applications use custom versions of the File
Save dialog. Each new version of MS Office, for example, has a completely
different File Save dialog. Other older apps, such as FS OpenBook, have
 an
old Windows 98 style of File Save. Just as an example. How I get JAWS to
read the current location varies depending on the style of File Save
 dialog the application is using.

This is really a problem that is screaming for a built-in JAWS solution
 that
would be universal across all applications and styles of File Save
 dialogs.

 Any ideas?

As a final note, I train blind and visually impaired people on using the
computer with JAWS, and one of the most frequent problems people encounter
is that they don't know where they are saving their documents and
subsequently are unable to locate them.
-Paul

name of the focus application, but I do not know how to go through the list
so I can open up the desired program.

 Thank you for your help.

Re: How to Get an Applications Key on a Lenovo Laptop?

2015-08-21 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
Even when I could see I had no use for print screen.

On 8/21/15, Ed Marquette via Jfw jfw@lists.the-jdh.com wrote:
This depends on which Lenovo model you are using. You can
sometimes swap the insert key and the applications key. Since
insert is the typical insert key, that may not be entirely
desirable; however, with the laptop keyboard, the capslock key
becomes the JAWS key. Depending upon personal preference, this
may be a good way to get both a JAWS key, which you absolutely
need, and an applications key, which is pretty handy.
The insert key, when it is not the JAWS key, is pretty useless.
Though, I would love to replace the print screen key with
something useful. I don't think I've ever found a use for the
 print screen key.

Right click though is WHEREVER THE mouse happens to be. The
application menu is triggered where the keyboard is focused.

You could of course route the jaws to PC cursor before doing the

Re: How to Get an Applications Key on a Lenovo Laptop?

Also, if the keyboard has some key you aren't going to use, you can
employ SharpKeys (https://sharpkeys.codeplex.com/) to remap that other
key.

I have done that with my laptop's print screen key, print screen is
simply something I don't need. It's a little annoying having it in
such a different spot than the normal applications key but I find it
less annoying than shift+f10.

Re: Visual studio with jaws

If you are using the free edition I am pretty sure it's not going to
work all that well, just a limitation of the product.

I believe 2012 and 2013 are much better in that regard but can't speak
from personal experience as I use Pro (which works very well in my
experience).

I am not sure if this is an issue of properly accessing the output window
with jaws or if it is an issue with how I am using the cout and iostream
commands. Should the text come out in the same wwindow as the output that
gives the errors and other such stuff about how the program ran? Is there
anyone here who is familiar with the use of visual studio with jaws and can
 help?

Re: Vocalizer with JAWS?

2015-08-17 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
You need to enable the synthesizer first, go to the jaws menu
(jaws+j), then under utilities choose Synthesizer and Braille
Manager.

In the manager hit the Add remove or change button.
Make sure Synthesizer is selected in the list and hit next.
From the check box list that follows make sure any synthesizer you
want to be able to use is checked then hit the Finish button.
Finally hit the 'Close button to exit the synthesizer and braille manager.

You may need to restart jaws in order to have this change take effect,
I am not sure.

After doing this the synthesizer should appear in the profiles list,
also in the voice adjustment dialog.

Re: dual source headsets, where to get?

2015-08-17 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
What I would really like would be a voice modem that allows routing
the voice call through the computer's audio hardware (rather than
through a dedicated port on the modem itself or with cheap models not
at all). And then use a program on the computer for dialing, for
answering etc, Get rid of the external telephone handset entirely.

Unfortunately the only devices I have found that actually do all of
the needed tasks for this are professional level equipment geared
toward computer based call centers and the like. Regular modems have
become such commodity equipment that in order to meet the price demand
the manufacturers have stripped out every feature that is only rarely
used (which leaves the typical model pretty much a data/fax modem
regardless of any voice features advertised). Perhaps an answering
machine as well, but certainly not the full duplex voice capability
that phone conversations require.

I found a guy on Thumbtack that claims to be able to whip up a cable that
would let me use any headset mic with those combination jacks Apple and
other phones like to use now. I'm surprised even Plantronics didn't know
there was such a thing, claiming the stuff they knew of was like an a/b
switch. I remember one time when I did some transcription during school
where I tried two headphones, and one busted right in half. What I tried to
do was using two pairs of earphones, with the one behind's left earpiece
pushed out of the way to get the front one to sit there.

Oh, OK. I wonder if they make a way to have it hook into the 4 band

 where
some phones had the removable cord on the handset part, and you plug a
 cable
from the amp part into this instead, and the original phone cable in to
 the
other side, sort of like answering machines did.

The Amplifier is for the phone itself. The Amp plugs into where the
 handset
would be, and you run the headset that way. I've used it before, and
 they

To disable Fast-User Switching, do the following:

 1.
Access Windows 10 Power Options. This can easily be achieved using several
 methods:
 a.
Right click in the lower left corner of the screen (or simultaneously
 press
the Windows + X keys). This will bring up an 'Admin' menu. Simply select
 Power Options from that menu.
 b.
From within the Desktop; navigate to Control PanelPower Options.
 Or c.
From within the Start Screen; type power, click on Settings, and select
Power Options from the list of results:

 2.
In the 'Power Options' window; click on Choose what the power buttons do
 (from the left hand panel):

 3.
In the new window; click on Change settings that are currently
 unavailable:

 4.
 Uncheck Fast user switching.

That's all there is to it.

 Enjoy,

 Mark

Now, when I press the jaws/insert key, and F12 for getting time, for

Re: Calling All Script Writers

Also, if all you want to do is pass a key through you can simply
assign the PassKeyThrough script to the key in the .jkm for the

I use the script editor, open the .jkm in question then add a line like:

So, I want a simple script, which I've assigned to Windows down

The first script command is the ByPass command, and I think that
 works.

I'm then thinking I should send the TypeKey command followed with
 the parameter (DownArrow).

 So the line reads:

Well, I get a compile error on the TypeKey command.

I think I am overlooking something pretty simple.

Re: Soronel, Re: How many characters can be in a folder or file name in Win 7?

2015-07-19 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
The 32768 is the total character limit. As I said, if using NTFS
(which is the default for hard drives) each level of the file system
is limited to 256 characters but there is also a total limit of 32768
characters, that total limit includes any leading drive specifier and
all path separators (the c:\and the '\' characters).

That 32768 character limit also applies if you are doing something on
the network and there it includes machine and share names.

IEFoexample you might have a network path like:
\\my_computer\c_drive\users\myself\documents\some_file.doc

Such a path cannot exceed 32768 characters in total length. Honestly,
I would be very scared if you ever got anywhere close to that length.

The easy way using jaws is to use the jaws+4 dialog, the pound symbol
is on that list.

There is a way using the numpad but it's a pain because you have to
know the character number for the symbol you want.

Re: Does Kindle Work Well With JAWS?

Neither the regular or accessible kindle app REALLY works with jaws,
what THE accessible version does is detect that an accessibility
program is running (at least jaws, NVDA and window eyes are detected,
don't know about others) and then enables self-voicing. My chief

Rick,
Did you get the Kindle for PC with Accessibility Plugin? If you didn't
download that version, go to

http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200596280

and read the information on that page. There is also a download link.

With this version of the program, JAWS reads the menus, while the built-in

speech that comes with the program reads the text of the book.

If you are reading a novel or other book that you can read straight
 through,
the program works fairly well. However, if you need to go to different
parts of a book or search for specific content, forget it. Navigation is
limited, and JAWS can't read the text in the book directly. The JAWS OCR
feature can give you access to the text of each page, but multiple columns

cause reading difficulties.

If you have an iPhone or iPad, the iOS app works much better for reading
EBooks.

Re: Does Kindle Work Well With JAWS?

2015-07-07 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
My experience with the accessible kindle app isn't quite that bad but
still kindle is far from my first choice of format.

But then I have not tried it for anything reference or learning type,
only fiction so finding an exact spot hasn't been relevant to me.

Honestly my first choice is plain text, then RTF, followed by doc and
PDF. I have not tried epub, mostly because I have been unable to find
an epub reader that sounds at all accessible (my book port is supposed
to be able to deal with epub but I have not tried it).

Plain text does have the disadvantage of not being able to deal with
math type stuff very well, for that sort of thing both RTF and doc are
excellent. But I also understand why publishers don't make material
available in those formats, as they provide no real DRM protection.

On 7/7/15, Adrian Spratt via Jfw jfw@lists.the-jdh.com wrote:

that I somehow missed. As I recall, I also couldn't conveniently go back to
re-read a sentence or paragraph. As Soronel indicates, the voice was
horrible to listen to and hard to comprehend. In the end, I bought the
paperback and performed OCR on it so that I could read it with JAWS.

As long as I can choose the voice and speed I would say I generally
prefer synthesized narration over a human as it is. There are a few
exceptionally good human narrators for which this is not true but they
are a definite minority. And recorded audio is harder to manipulate to
the fast rate I like than synthesizers (I have been told by several

a buzz to them).

My experience was quite the opposite actually. Now, let me say that for me

the male voice was better than the female voice in the Kindle for PC with

Accessibility plugin software, and as much as I hate slow speech, I found

the slower speed less jarring than the faster rate. The male voice is Tom

from the Realspeak set of voices, so it's like reading a novel being read

by the guy who reads bulletins on your weather radio. Certainly it's not
as good as a human narrator. Having said that, I have read entire books
that way, and particularly with nonfiction, I didn't find it too bad.
There are keystrokes (I can't name them right now because Kindle for PC is

on my laptop and I am not) to allow you to go back to the previous page,
and I think paragraph by paragraph. Also, when I close the book and reopen

it, I'm at least at the top of the page where I left off. It wouldn't be
my first choice for reading a book, but I haven't given up on it either,
and I do love that I can buy a book like my sighted friends and start
reading it in two seconds. I like it well enough to use it, but it's not
 my favorite way to read.

Neither the regular or accessible kindle app REALLY works with jaws,
what THE accessible version does is detect that an accessibility
program is running (at least jaws, NVDA and window eyes are detected,
don't know about others) and then enables self-voicing. My chief

No, drivers should not get uninstalled without specific user action.
All that might happen is that the operating system will be set to use
the new sound card as the default audio output but the old one should
still be there.

For example, when I was heavily into using virtual machines I
sometimes had two or even three USB headsets to the box, with one
dedicated to main system sound and the others each carrying audio for

I do know there is
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc165614%28v=vs.100%29.aspx

Also, if you are willing to install or already have the windows SDK it
includes a tool called Visual UIA Verifier that does an excellent job
of letting you know what information your program actually exposes to
accessibility programs like jaws. In most cases simply making the

Re: Installation of today's new JAWS release

2015-06-22 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
Hi,

I've noticed lately that most reboots after installation take
significantly longer than I would expect (even taking into account
that reboot after install won't have the normal decreased boot time
associated with win8.1). Given how simply turning off a booting system
is one of the few remaining ways to mess up an operating system
install I would suggest waiting much longer than five minutes before
assuming that the reboot is hung. My jaws upgrade took close to that
today and I've had a few MS updates take more than 20 minutes after
reboot, but the point is that the system did eventually come around.

On 6/22/15, Adrian Spratt via Jfw jfw@lists.the-jdh.com wrote:

something was wrong because the rebooting process got hung. So I shut down
the PC and restarted. It took a while, but eventually the PC came back to
life and JAWS reloaded. Ultimately a good result, but the experience brought
back bad memories of earlier JAWS releases. In the future, I'll make sure to
have sighted assistance nearby when I install a new JAWS release, just in
case. I wonder if this process went more smoothly for others.

IIRC you use ctrl+alt+pause (the rightmost key in the group of three above
the group of six on a standard PC keyboard). That will put the RDP into
windowed mode and at that point alt+tab will switch between programs
 running
 on the local system.

Re: new laptop user with jaws 16

2015-06-04 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
Actually I was not aware of that one. Chagrin.

Still not as nice as a real context menu key. Probably not even as
nice as my remapped print screen since it requires hitting two keys.
Prior to this laptop I had not even encountered a laptop with an
actual print screen key, it has always been an Fn key combo before
(the print screen key takes the place of a second ins key next to the
del in the row that makes up the normal six-pack).

What is even more frustrating is that this laptop is slightly wider
than my prior one so the space is there, but the keyboard is smashed
into a narrower area. It simply has pretty large margins to the left
and right of the keyboard.

The one thing I find annoying with my HP laptop is that it does not
have the context menu key. I have used a utility to remap the print

convenient as a proper context menu key. My guess, however, is that a

Re: JAWS and browser pdf plug-ins

2015-06-01 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
I don't even bother trying to view PDF in the browser, even when I
could see (prior to 2007 or so) it simply created so many problems
that I just used acrobat reader instead.

On 6/1/15, Strange, Lainie via Jfw jfw@lists.the-jdh.com wrote:
Hello - I posted this question on the WebAIM listserv but just want to get
confirmation from the JAWS user community. I have been researching an issue
over the last week reported by a regular JAWS users that when they access
pdf files on a site I maintain, that the pdf file 'hangs' or gives a
'document loading' message and never reads the document. We have discovered
that either hitting the back button and forward button or hitting insert +
escape to refresh the virtual buffer clears the problem and reads the pdf
file normally. I had another fellow JAWS user test various pdf files on
different sites I maintain, resulting in the same problem. I even had both
users set IE preferences to retrieve new copies of files every time they
visit the page, but still same results.

Both users were using IE 11 to open the pdf documents, using varied version
of JAWS (14 and 16). I did some research and did discover that enabling fast
web view on a pdf file can create problems for JAWS but even after disabling
this, the problem persisted. The document was properly tagged, not protected
and these were not large files (most under 50kb)

Our conclusion was that the source of the problem was somewhere between the
pdf plug-in and JAWS. What are others' experiences? I do know from
experience that I have had other problems with pdf plug-ins across many
browsers even outside of screen readers. Any thoughts or advice greatly
 appreciated.

Re: Multiple Instances of JAWS

2015-05-26 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
Hi,

Windows simply does not remove the tray icon when a program dies, it
is up to the program itself to remove the icon.

If you click on the icon for a program that is no longer running then
windows will remove it, but not otherwise.

close JAWS, all instances of JAWS disappear.

Still, having the computer confused into thinking there are
multiple instances of JAWS cannot be a good thing.

Does anyone know what this is all about, or can you point me in
the right direction in the archives for this list, assuming I
didn't just dream up prior discussion of this issue?

Re: JAWS cursor inconsistancy between PC and Jaws whithin MS word.

2015-05-19 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
You are likely running into an inconsistency based on the zoom level.
The PC cursor mode is going to report the font size that is selected
for the passage (what would be used if the document were printed)
while the jaws cursor mode is going to report the font size that was
actually used for the screen font. On top of the zoom level the screen
font is also subject to adjustment based on your system's DPI scaling.

Re: Changing languages on the fly

2015-05-08 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
The jaws language auto-detect works fine if the document is formatted
to say what language any given section is in, although I would
hesitate to call that auto detect, instead I would call it language
auto-manage or some other term. As far as I know this really only
works in formats like MS word, html or pdf.

I would be very surprised if any program could do a good job actually
auto detecting the language of an arbitrary piece of text (that is the
bare text without any metadata). Even in Unicode there are simply too
many ranges that are shared by multiple scripts and of course many
scripts are not at all language specific.

Re: Reading long documents - Two questions on voices

2015-05-07 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
With material I really need to understand and that I might need to
take notes for I simply don't use say all. I will instead use line by
navigation for that sort of reading. It is way slower than say all
but I find that with say all the programs idea of cursor position gets
separated from where jaws has read to so that if I interrupt speech I
then have to work to find the spot that I was just listening to. With
line by line navigation that simply isn't a problem.

capture as much as I read while reading. I pause between sentences and

Understanding the change in paragraph helps when you like to organize
your mind about the flow of concepts. Is there any solutions or

 2. Second, for long and complex technical papers, I use expressive

is that I need to slow down the speed of the voice to be able to
follow the complex structure of my papers. I wish I could change the

down the entire reading. Slowing down the entire reading makes me

Re: my function keys (insert f1 through 12), have stopped working on my keyboard

2015-04-30 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
And if talking about HP laptops the fn key is to the right of the left
control key (but it has to be hit in combination with the f key to be
invoked, it's not an on-off toggle), hp laptops also default to action
key mode where the f keys perform other actions (things like mute and
network airplane mode). To reset the f keys from that mode requires
someone who can see because it can only be changed in the BIOS.

Re: a problem I'm having

2015-04-27 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
I've tried WE a couple times and found pretty much the same thing.
Part of it is, I believe, simply being used to jaws and the way it
does things but even with a jaws keymap active it was still enough
different that I kept stumbling. Plus there are certainly things
where WE simply is not as capable, things that matter a great deal to
me, the dictionary being the major item. WE dictionary entries simply
could not deal with numerous punctuation sequences I use all the time.
I will admit that the WE scripting system is vastly better than jaws'
home built language but writing scripts is something I only rarely
need to do and now that jaws supports UIA even that difference isn't
all that important.

As for jaws and crashing I find the current situation with auto
restart far preferable to what it did up until a few years ago where
jaws crashing would very often freeze my entire system and a reboot
was the only way to recover. Waiting thirty seconds to a minute is way
better than wasting five plus minutes going through a reboot (plus
losing all unsaved work).

On 4/27/15, Michal Nowicki via Jfw jfw@lists.the-jdh.com wrote:

At any rate, if you are considering switching to WindowEyes, keep in mind
that WindowEyes behaves very differently than JAWS. That is true of
keystrokes, as well as verbosity. I myself can't stand WindowEyes!

If you're using the latest version of JAWS, that's probably due to the
 fact
that JAWS stops working, and then restarts itself. It happens to me all
 the
time. I understand the reasoning behind it, but you still don't have
 speech
during that minute or so. You're wondering if your computer has frozen
 or
what's going on. FS built that into JAWS 15 and 16. In 15, you can

Re: EBOOKS AND JAWS?

2015-04-13 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
Some do, some don't.

For instance, even when marked as being accessible kindle books
require that jaws or some other recognized screen reader be running in
order for the accessible kindle app to operate in accessible mode
(although since one of the recognized readers is free this isn't much
of a limitation) but even then the app does not actually use the
recognized screen reader for voice output (instead the app has a
couple voices embedded and uses those).

With PDF again it is up to the publisher but at least there it is the
user's screen reader that will be used to read the content.

I can't speak for other e-book formats.

Re: Questions about JAWS Scripts

2015-02-10 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
In answer to your first question, no, not all software can be made
accessible through scripting. It is very possible for programs to be
written in such a way that they simply do not expose enough
information for jaws to grab on to to be made usable.

The questions about how long and how much would it cost really don't
have anything like reasonable answers, it simply depends on how big
the program is and how little accessibility support it provides.

On 2/9/15, Michal Nowicki via Jfw jfw@lists.the-jdh.com wrote:
 Dear JAWS Users,

At some point, each and everyone of you has probably faced frustration over
having to deal with inaccessible software. When more accessible
alternatives exist, or when use of such software is not necessary, this
isn't normally a major issue. However, if a person's job depends on one's
ability to work with such software efficiently, and it is not possible to
bypass it, then there is a problem.

Fortunately, as many of you know, JAWS offers the ability to improve user
experience through scripts. On that note, I have a few questions about
 JAWS
scripts. First off, how much can they do? Can they make any software that
is completely inaccessible fully compatible with JAWS, or are there some
limitations that make it impossible to successfully script some
poorly-designed programs. Second, how long does it take to develop and
 test
scripts for an application. Finally, suppose that I am offered a job for a
law firm and discover that its firm management software is inaccessible.
 If
this happens and I must hire someone to write scripts for the software
(assuming that all other screen readers fail as well, and that I cannot
bypass the software), how much may this cost me or my potential employer?
Is it likely to be a worthwhile investment, or is it better to seek
 employment elsewhere?

Thank you in advance for your responses.

 Warm Regards,

 Michal

 5) Hold down right arrow long enough to fast forward to the end of the

 6) Hit insert + down arrow (say all) again. JAWS only reads the last line

Re: Fully Functional Screen Reader Petition

2015-01-21 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
It would be fairly difficult for narrator to be implemented in such a
way that a complete install would be possible for us. For instance
with the HP computers I have now in order to do a install or reset to
factory I have to use a boot screen menu that is present well before
windows runs at all.

I wonder if the issue isn't the screen reader, but how it is implemented.
Put another way, could narrator allow us to install windows, if it were
implemented slightly differently. This would allow us to have the
installation ability that you get with Apple, but at the same time,
Microsoft wouldn't have to commit to a full screen reader.

You may not want to start a discussion, but posting a link to this
petition inevitably does just that. I worry that if MS came up with
anything close to Apple's VoiceOver, employers would assume basic
accessibility requirements have been met without the added cost of buying
and updating JAWS. As good as VoiceOver may be, and despite our periodic
frustrations with FS, JAWS is exclusively tailored to the needs of
visually impaired computer users. I dread the day MS takes on this job and
 elbows FS out.

Subject: Fully Functional Screen Reader Petition

 Hi all,

I consider this a very important petition, however, I do not wish to start
a discussion on whether or not this will do away with blindness products,
the attempt as such will fail, or any other messages of a similar nature.

Someone started a petition calling on Microsoft to incorporate a real
 screen reader into Windows 10.
This should include maintenance and installing capabilities.
 The link is here:

Share this with friends and family, on Facebook or Twitter. Anywhere you
feel might give the necessary votes.

Voting is easy, and you do not even need to provide an e-mail address.

And I've tried WE a couple times, having purchased the 60 day trial
option, and came away extremely unimpressed each time.

Have you looked on the view menu at the zoom level and text size
settings within IE itself?

 Hello everyone,

I am a JAWS 16 user and having a problem in internet explorer 11. For some
reason, the web pages are displaying very small images. My sighted husband
finds difficult to see whata is on the page. He is not computer savy, and I
can see just enough to know that things just do not look right. I have gone
through several things, like-display, brightness, etc. and now have gotten
the icons on the desktop very large, which is not necessary. I do not know
where or what to do to change settings to display normally. If anyone can
advise, I would greatly appreciate this.

 Thanks,

 Barbara H.
