RE: How to unzip a file?

2015-09-21 Thread Adrian Spratt via Jfw
I find 7-Zip, which is open source software, much easier to understand. For
example, one option is to "Extract here," meaning unzip to the same folder.
Couldn't be clearer. It's accessible.

Just open the context menu with the applications key, press enter on 7-Zip,
then arrow down to "Extract here" and press enter.

For anyone interested, here's the link to a page with an explanation and the
download link:

That may be true under some conditions. But I use Windows XP, and I cannot
copy the files listed in the zip file with Control plus C. Instead, I must
use a copy to folder option found in the edit menu. So, opening the zip file
is not the same as having the files in an extracted folder.

Re: How to unzip a file?

2015-09-21 Thread Bill White via Jfw
Hi, Mike. After you sent me this message, I tried again to copy the contents
of an opened zip file to another folder, and it did work for me this time,
just the way you said it does for you. I'm not sure why it wasn't working
for me before, except that before, I had a different version of JAWS, and it
was about three years ago that I tried it this way before.

Thank you for letting me know this works, Mike.

Let's take an example, which is easier to deal with than an explanation
without one.
Let's say you have a zip file named New Testament.zip.
Press enter on the zip file.
It opens and you see a folder named New Testament. Let's say you want to
extract the contents of the folder and keep it in a folder of the same name.
Select the foldername and copy it to the clipboard as though you were
copying an ordinary folder.
Then leave the window opened and open the drive or wherever you want the
folder to be.
Paste as though you were pasting an ordinary folder.
The folder will be copied and all of it's contents will be in the folder.
If you have the Windows zip utility on your computer and it is working
properly, this procedure will work.
Gene

From: Joseph FreeTech
Keep in mind that Gene's basic Windows procedure will not work for .rar
files, .7z files, or any compression method other than zip.

Joseph the free tech guy!

From: Gene
That's because the microsoft zip utility only works with zip files. It also
won't work if you have associated another unarchive program like 7zip or
winzip to open when you press enter on a zip file. By default, the Windows
zip utility opens. If you change this, other programs don't have this copy
and paste option.

Re: How to unzip a file?

2015-09-20 Thread Marla Bernbaum via Jfw
To unzip or extract from a zipped file:1. Open the context menu
using application key or right mouse click button (Jaws key+ 8 on number
key pad)

2. Select "extract" from the context menu or press "T"

3. Tab through the dialog and select extract or press Alt +E. This will
place the extracted or unzipped file in whatever folder the original zipped
file is already in. If you want it to appear elsewhere, you can select a
different option when you tab through the extract dialog .

In summary, the short cut is:
application key, then letter "T", then alt+E.
Jaws announces extraction progression until it is 100 percent completed.

With the zipped file highlighted, open the context menu by pressing the
applications key or shift + F10 if using the laptop layout. Arrow down to,
Extract All, press enter, tab to the extract button & press enter. Pay
attention to the various dialogue boxes as you tab through to get to the

If you press enter on a zipped file, copy the contents, & paste them into a
folder of the same name somewhere else, it'll work just as you had unzipped
the file.
Take care.

Hi, Ann. Pressing Enter on a zip file usually does not unzip the file. it
only opens it so you can see the contents of the file. To actually unzip the
file, one must press the Applications key, arrow to Extract All, follow the
dialogue boxes, and wait for the file to be extracted.

Re: How to unzip a file?

2015-09-20 Thread Bill White via Jfw
That may be true under some conditions. But I use Windows XP, and I cannot
copy the files listed in the zip file with Control plus C. Instead, I must
use a copy to folder option found in the edit menu. So, opening the zip file
is not the same as having the files in an extracted folder.
