KR> Speed Brake & Flaps

2016-11-04 Thread Dan Prichard
I designed the speed brake and flaps to operate separately. Travel time on the
speed is about 2 seconds to 85 degrees. You can see the flaps operate on
YouTube. Look for N257DP. For short field I was planning a spoiler set up as
you can see in the gathering photos.
And yes, the plane is still for sale. Lots of tire kickers.

KR> Aileron spar

2016-01-02 Thread Dan Prichard
I had a few nuts get blocked with resin and flox after attaching the aileron
spar to the wing. After the resin set I used a 3/32" drill bit to cut through
the bulk of the overfill then used a tap to clean out the threads. Minimal
amount of effort.

KR> Fiberglass/Carbon Fiber combo

2015-09-28 Thread Dan Prichard
Are you using the new airfoil? If you are, then your rudder post will be 34" s
above the top longeron or about 44" total. After discussions with Mark L. I
raise my rudder post up to 40"s making the rudder 50"s overall. I also extended
the horizontal surface outward. Full width is now 84"s. Elevator has remained
the same depth. I'm sure there is some argument about width vs depth because
the square inch factor would probably be the same. Wider and narrower made more
sense to me in relation to pitch input.

I'm not an engineer but I've been in the presence of a few. I was told the

KR> Glassing Tiger Gear legs

2015-09-14 Thread Dan Prichard
I did not thin them out. I dialed in the flex I thought would work by reducing
the width. I read of an earlier KR2 which the builder simply cut the leg down
the middle. He said they worked just fine. His KR was a 900 # plane. From that
point I knew my plane was going towards the 1250 # GW range. Applied some
simple math and there you go. The flex and deflection seam right. If I find
them to be to stiff I'll cut the down. If it's not stiff enough I'll use the
other set of legs I bought and start again. At that price you can experiment
some.

2015-09-10 Thread Dan Prichard
I want to put everyone at ease. I'm not out of pocket on any thing concerning
the gathering. I did use my money along with the funds sent by Larry to keep
the gathering machine moving forward. I never felt at risk or uneasy about the
funds and I was confident the good KR folks would cover the expenses. Donations
are still coming and Im confident that all the monies sent by Larry and Steve
will be returned to the gathering fund. I didn't even know there was a fund
when I volunteered to host this year. It's all working out just fine. Thanks

KR> 2015 Gathering

2015-09-09 Thread Dan Prichard
Now that things have calmed down a bit I would like to say thanks to all those
who attended the 2015 Gathering @MMV. It was a pleasure to host this years
event and hope to see everyone at next years gathering where ever that may be.
I don't think I could have pulled this off without the help of John Bouyea and
my wife Marsha. And thanks to all of those who pitched in to help. A special
thanks to Larry Flesner for taking on the grill and sharing his poems with the
group. Both Mark Langford and Jeff Scott did a great job in educating the
masses in fiberglass techniques and weight / balance. Jeff Bertuleit's
propeller lecture was excellent and very informative as was the presentation
from Kurt @ Dynon.
We hope to have a full account of the funds by this weekend. Doesn't look like
we broke even but we still have 4 shirts to sell and some have promised
donations. If you would like to donate to the Gathering General Fund you can
send it through PayPal to my email. Dprich01 at comcast.net

Thanks again for letting me host the 2015 Gathering

KR> KR Gathering

2015-08-31 Thread Dan Prichard
Looks like the weather forecast for the event will be great. Sunny, winds out
of the NW and temps in the 70's. Smoke from the wild fires should stay to the
East of Mt Hood.

KR> Dacron substitute

2015-08-21 Thread Dan Prichard
If the nylon you're looking at is water or wind resistant then its coated with
silicone. Don't use that. Any fiberglass supply shop will have some sort of
peel ply. Prices vary. Tap Plastics, fiber lay, US composites etc.
I bought mine from a.s after picking up a few samples from local fabric stores.
The peel ply from a.s has worked the best for me and was cheaper. Good luck

KR> Flying to the Gathering

2015-08-21 Thread Dan Prichard
Long range weather forecast shows mostly sunny, temps in the upper 70's to low
80's, evening low near 53.
Winds will be out of the NW around 10 kts. Looking good.
We do have some fires in the area with light smoke in the Willamette Valley.
Just thought you might want to know.

KR> MMV Gathering

2015-08-10 Thread Dan Prichard
Getting close, 24 days. Things are moving well on this end and the excitement
is growing. There's still rooms available and plenty of camping space. If your
not attending and want a shirt or hat just let me know before 17 Aug. I have to
get the order in to make sure they're available to the attendees.
I'm setting up a table for smaller things you want to trade, sell or give away
( no wives or kids please). Being them out and make another builders day.

2015-07-30 Thread Dan Prichard
Good question. I need to rent chairs and tables and some food service
equipment. Awards, coffee, water and such. Plus we are trying to perpetuate the
gathering funds for future events. The hats and shirts will pay for themselves
with a little left over. And I stress "little". Fortunately the venue is no
charge to us.

I just finished a trip to NE Washington to pick up a 30 year old KR project.
Has original retract gear installed with wheel & brakes. All the premolded
fiberglass top pieces and wing tips. Control stick, cables, aluminum control
components and tail surfaces. All spars and attachment fittings. It also
has a Continental A-65 with motor mount. Not sure about its condition other
than mags are gone. Has oil tank and Stromberg carb. If anyone is looking some

KR> Measuring vinyl ester resin

2015-06-24 Thread Dan Prichard
If it's in a tube poke a hole in with a small nail and count the drops. If it's
in a can pick up an eye dropper at Walgreens and count the drops. Somewhere
between 8-10 drops per ounce. Try not to mix up more than six ounces at a time
or it will go exothermic real quick. I picked up a 1 ounce pump and put the
resin in a 1 gallon jug. 1 pump and 8 drops and let the magic happen. There's
an additive for the resin that helps the surface cure if it's not covered with
peel ply or plastic sheet. I didn't use much. Had no real problem with
surface cure.

KR> aircraft radio/ gps recommendation

2015-06-24 Thread Dan Prichard
After a lot of careful consideration I decided to use a Collins vhf 251. Not to
heavy and plentiful. I picked 2 for a couple hundred. Slide in and out. Had
them both checked and are in great shape. Small panel space needed. For a gps I
picked up a King AV8OR Ace. When first released they sold for over $2k. I got
mine with card and accessories for $400 new in the box. Lots of features. With
technology changing every other day any thing new you buy will be outdated
before you fly your KR. Keep it simple where you can.

KR> Build space for KR2S

2015-06-12 Thread Dan Prichard
Gary, I build just about everything in a 10' x 20' shed. Built a 28" x 16'
bench against the wall for the fuselage, spars and tail. Then built another 42"
x 8' and a 24" x 6' bench to assemble the boat. Fortunately I had the room to
set up a 10'x20' Costco garage/tent in the back yard on a wood platform. Moved
the boat to the tent and started assembly. Built the wings in the shed. You get
used to walking sideways and doubling your tools, because what you need is
always on the other side. Started my project October 2013. I'm now wiring the
panel, engine in on, down on the gear. Waiting on prop and Rotec carb. Send me
your contact info and I'll send you some pics of my set up.

That's what is great about the KR. You can do just about anything you want.

The Vineyard hotel has blocked out about 20 rooms for us with rates from $70-80
per night depending on room configuration. Make sure you let them know you are
with the KR Group. They will release unclaimed rooms a few weeks before our
event based on their needs. Please book early.

KR> Plywood orientation

2015-03-30 Thread Dan Prichard
You can probably pick up the T-88 locally so you can get it when you need more.
I also used about 2 quarts. Wood crafters supply carries it. I used 90 degree
plywood.

KR> Hotel update

2015-03-26 Thread Dan Prichard
All, The motel 6 has 21 double queen and 29 single queen rooms as of this
email. Call Crystal and mention the KR gathering and she'll book you at the
$76,66 per night rate. That's $20 less than normal for our gathering dates.

KR> KR Gathering Accommodations

2015-03-26 Thread Dan Prichard
All, Dan Heath brought up a good point yesterday about keeping the hotel group
together. I recommend the Motel 6 & Guest House Vineyard Inn. They share the
same parking lot and are a direct shot to the airport. The Vineyard Inn has
offered us the Govt rate which will range from $70-100 per night depending on
how many use the room. When you call ask for Katey and tell her you want the
government rate. They currently have 31 rooms available. The motel 6 has not
gotten back to me yet but their rates are already low.

Book early and often

KR> 2015 Hotel List

2015-03-25 Thread Dan Prichard
Jeff, because it's over the Labor Day weekend most of the locations were not
interested in group rates.
All of the hotels are west of the airport within a 10 minute drive and all
hotels are within 1 mile of each other. The museum will send a van over to the
airport and get you there. We will do our best to get everyone moved around. As
sign up progresses I can evaluate this better. Great question, thanks for
bringing it up.

My grand daughter and her cousin are at the Evergreen water park today. I think
we'll have to pry them out at closing. Water slide out of a 747. Can life get
any better.

There's a longer YouTube video of the water park after this one. Worth
watching.

All, I believe we are getting close to launching the gathering site. John
Bouyea has been working on the mechanics and I've been putting together a hotel

I have asked Dan Weseman from SPA to speak to us about Corvair stuff and Jeff
Bertuleit from Props Inc to educate us on wood propellers.
If you have any suggestions or have something or someone who can make us

My actuator is out of a Honda. Right window 1998. Takes about 3 seconds to

see how it's mounted.

KR> fletchair gear legs

2014-12-14 Thread Dan Prichard
I often joke with the RV guys that I wanted to build a plan, not just assemble
one. To me, part of this project is the path to discovery. Obviously there are
certain components of the KR that need to be left alone and others that begged
to be tweaked. With all the KRs out there successfully flying with countless
mods only proves the design and reason for its longevity.
Must be why it's called an "Experimental" aircraft.
I agree with Larry. Just build it. I'm using the Grumman legs with 4130 welded
brackets. I'm basically following the Diehl design and principles. I'm not sure
what the optimum flex or amount of deflection should be. I don't have those
math skills. However, on my KR I've applied the old "apply weight and observe"
method. I feel comfortable that the size of the Grumman legs I've cut for my KR
are correct. We'll see. In my observations I've noticed the amount of weight
take up (absorption) done by the tires proceeds any gear leg deflection. I'm
inclined to believe tires and tire pressure play a larger role on landing
characteristics and bounce.
I remember reading in the old gathering notes & photos of a guy who cut a
Grumman leg down the middle and installed them. He said they worked great even
on some very hard landings.

Of course this is only my story, yours may vary.

KR> Engine Shipping

2014-12-08 Thread Dan Prichard
Most carriers will not accept an engine unless it's in a box (plywood) and on a
pallet. When I bought my engine it was shipped from Kansas to Portland Oregon
via FedEx Freight. Engine and box was 320 lbs. I believe it was around $200.00.
If you use PayPal book your shipping through them and save. Hope this helps
