Awesome video Larry! It is amazing how much your belly barn door affects the
wind noise when it is first deployed. With the recent discussions an excellent
example of what it should look like.

Nice video! I also noticed how clean the bottom of your airplane is! I don't

KR> Back to the KR...Finally

2014-07-12 Thread CraigW
Finally done with the Colt and flew .7 today. Now on to the KR again. But
first, todays lesson will be that no matter how hard you try you will miss
something. My flight today after 10 months of work was anything but uneventful.
The small oil leak turned into a big oil leak. Good thing I am staying right
over the airport and flying oval tracks. Oil cooler line was dripping a little
but I couldn't find the source. Oh well lets go fly it and maybe the leak will
stop. It only got worse. In 45 min I lost 3 qts that mostly resides on the
belly of the plane now. Lesson...find and fix the damn leak. The second thing
was that if you know a plane and then make a change,,,in this case I added about
40 Hp. Then you should expect to relearn the plane...I was not expecting all
the torque and extra right rudder I was going to need. While learning that
lesson I fail to notice that I had no airspeed by time I looked at it I was
half way down the 1900 foot runway. Oh and 40 extra ponies make things happen
faster too. So I decided we were going flying even with airspeed stuck on 0.
Flew fine for 45 min and watched the oil pressure slowly slip down...down...
down, at 50 psi it was time to land. Time to make an approach and see how thing
felt since I only have 1900 feet. First approach looked good so I went around
and came on in. Finally something that went as planned and the landing was
uneventful. Turned out that when we reskinned the belly we forgot to open the
static tubes. A hot soldering iron fixed that. So even though we had 3 people
(1 was an IA) working on the plane we all missed that static vents. The oil
leak was all my fault as I backed off a 45 deg fitting to get it to line up with
my oil line. So even though we try hard to think of everything. We always will
miss something. If were lucky, it a small something that does not become life
threatening. Now back to that KR.

2011-02-07 Thread warrong2
Any of you that know me from past writings know of the long length of time
it
has taken me to finally finish my Kr2-S. Starting in 1994, going through the
building process, then in the final stages having a Soob blow up and destroying
that engine, Has been truly frustrating and then economics.  Now this weekend I
finally started reworking the engine mounts for my newly built Corvair. I am in
the process of setting up the cg due to the lower weight of the 'vair and what
a
ball it is.  To be able to finally see the end of this long long road, I
couldn't even begin convey my feelings to anyone else.
i just received the 5th bearing,  a prop I purchased from good friend Steve
Makish.  The help from hangar buddy Bob Lester and also Steve Makish has also
been invaluable towards the final completion and wish to express to them and
all, my appreciation for their friendship and loyalty. Without them I would
have
taken a saws-all to my baby  ( "The Mistress")a long time ago. keep building
and
never never ever give up.

Today, I have one tank tested to not leak, and the other one undergoing a
little repair due to a small leak. I have fuel lines run from the wing
stubs to the fuel valve. I am now waiting for some fittings and will
install the tested tank in its wing over the next week, and get the bottom
of the wing ready for finish work.

It has been a long time coming, but I might just make the good flying
weather when it starts sometime in March.

Yep, got a good project, now I just need to gather up the items I hit the
list about earlier.

Though my top item is landing gear, perfer tri-gear. I'm looking to get the
Diehl gear, thoguh if anyone has some from an old project then let me know.

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2094554=1106895076=f07ac91656

For anyone interested, these are my BD4 pictures

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2061761=1106895076=570a3f7bfa

Yea I have a few repairs and changes to make, I got the Diehl wing skins so
that should make things alot faster for the wings, spars and all, are all
done.

It looks like it had the Grove landing gear on it at one time, though I
don't like the way it hangs on the outside, so I want the better loking tri
gear.

So if anyone has the

WHeels, brakes
Gear Legs
Front Nose Gear (wheel too)

Just let me know ASAP.

To add to the list I would also be interested in flairings and wheel pants.

Thanks everyone.

their forties and I am approaching retirement at 70.

First consideration is your licence do you have the correct licence to be
able to fly a KR2, if not sort that out.

Suggest you go to " The Gathering 2009 "

I suggest you buy a KR2 Flying or a project that is well on it's way there
are several around. It will save you a lot of time. Even if you have to
redo some of it you can see how someone else has done it.

Good luck

Hay you guys I was just trying to describe myself a little bit. I am
currently in Afghanistan working on an infrastructure rehabilitation program
building a power plant for Kabul. If anyone would like to come over and
help out I may be able to fine room in the man camp for you! We are only
about 2 mile east of Kabul International. But to get here one must drive
through down town and that is a 10 or 12 mile trip through one of the most
dangerous slums in the world. I expect to be finished over here in 2010 and
retire at the age of 70 so will need something to do in my spare time then
like building an airplane. My Corvair will help but I want to build an
airplane also. How does one get started with a KR? By the way I have a
nephew who is also interested in building, he already has his ticket. I
have not told him yet but I may just help him build. He is currently
interested in a Cozy.

But one thing I never see elaborated on is how does one start to build a

Where do you buy the plans, or must it be a kit or what? Also for one who

a license to fly can I master this aircraft after I build it? I understand
that I would have to almost start over on the licensing process as it has

Well Larry, The building of a KR is a great experance. I enjoyed it very
much. It will take some time to complete a KR-II. Don't let happen to you
what happened to me. I completed mine with all the paper work and signed off
for flight. I was into high speed taxi runs up and down the runway and
flying my old Cessna every weekend. My medical came due. I didn't pass. I
locked the hangar door and left for Alaska. A few years have passed now and
I've become used to the idea. I'm now ready, to let go of my life's first
love (flying). I'm returning to Central Oregon this summer. N37LH and
N7215T need to be dusted off, sold and see some sunshine again. So Larry, my
advice is, that the building experance is wonderful but, If you want to fly,
GO FLY.

Larry,

Assuming you haven't seen too many completed KRs in the flesh or have had a
ride in one, I'd start there with my decision making. Your physical size and
weight could be a factor. Try to find someone in your area that is willing
to give you a ride - that may the best info you could use at this point.

2009-02-13 Thread John Gotschall
Guys,

I can't help but be happy today, I finished my first BFR after more
than 10 years of no flying (well, full scale anyway)..

Divorce in Washington will strip you of all your posessions and future
wealth, but only for ten years or so.. ( I'd guess about $650k or so)
After 10 years of state imposed poverty: I am finally free, and now I
can say flying again!

wooo hooo!

After ten years, I went to "get current" the instructor could not
believe how greasey those landings were, so he made me do a few to be
sure it wasn't just luck.. greased them all. Then on the second flight
(today) I greased two more in a 18 knot 90 degree sidewind.. I crabbed
it to the deck then kissed the windy wheel first, drug it along for a
while then let the rest down. Sweet...

The instructor was laughing hard when he saw ten years of dust bunnies
and laundry room lint flying off my flight bag at the airport..

Too good to be true.. now I can fly, I just need to massage my kr to
fly..

This morning I made two hour flight at daybreak. I had to climb above the 6500'
cloud deck to get out of the 5 mile visibility haze. Once I broke out on top it
was beautiful clear flying from there. Winds up there were giving me a 35 mph
variance according to my GPS. When I landed we had 17 mph almost directly
across the runway. It was not my best landing but it was ok. This was my first
flight since Sept 5th due to weather here has been wet and not favorable for
flying. Sure was good get back in the air. The rain is coming back tomorrow.

KR> Finally Home after Oshkosh!

2008-10-12 Thread william Clapp
It has been a long couple weeks but Elaine and I finally made it home. We left
out on Tuesday the 18th and flew to Illinois, spent the night and flew up toNew
Richmond Wisconsin to my mom and dads on Wednesday. We spent a couple days
there with family and helping my dad put the wings on his turbo 206 (one I
painted last year). Dad left for Oshkosh on Saturday in his VW Rabbit diesel.
He voluteers for the MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship) booth that was in Hangar
D. Last year he flew the Cessna 180 that was his mission plane in Mexico to
Oshkosh. We spent the last six years restoring it after it had been damaged.
It is neat to see my dad own his first mission plane. This year he needed to
drive but I will try to talk him into flying in next year.
Sunday, Elaine and I flew out to the mini-KR gathering in Wakesha...Mark
Jones has some great pics from that - It was good to meet all the guys there.
The other guys decided to make me try to lead them to Oshkosh - not sure if it
was great decision...it can be confusing as they found out but we all landed
safely at the World's busiest airport.
Elaine and I stayed at the YMCA with Glenda McElwee (KR2 builder) during
our time there. It is a great place for those interested in indoor camaping at
Oshkosh. I believe you can check on it online. Losts of fun - busy talking to
people - seeing some great flying - we left out yesterday - stopped in KY for
overnight and made it home about noon today. Tired but a great tripMore
to come...
Keep building guys and gals.Bill and N41768 - 385 hours.

KR> Finally Getting the Hang of it.

2008-10-12 Thread Barry Kruyssen
Last weekend I had two flights, one on Saturday morning and the other on Sunday
morning. Could have done more but economics is restricting my flying time.

Saturday, Taxied out after a Cessna 170, take off was uneventful, climb up over
the mountain range behind Atherton and as I near the top I see the 170 still
climbing to clear the range.
Should have seen the smile on my face at that point. Got to Chillagoe 40
minutes later and lined up for landing, the approach was average but the
landing was . YEH material. As I wheeled on I
heard the tyres chirp but didn't feel the bump of the touchdown (now an even
bigger smile). Had a drink and comfort stop, hoped back in and departed
downwind (about 2 knots) back to Atherton. The air was quite turbulent on the
return trip so a reduced speed was established for my comfort. Average ground
speed of 104 knots for the round trip including both take offs and circuits
(calculated from the GPS track).

Sunday, Took off and tracked for Wangettie Beach from Atherton. Made my
departure call, a little while later another aircraft said he was departing
from a private strip that was along my track line but should be clear before I
got there, I asked for an exact location. "Koha" he replied, to which I replied
"overhead in 1 minute at 2500ft". His reply was "God that thing moves". Big
Smile again. Continued on to the beach then tracked north following the
beaches but just out over the ocean, nice and smooth. Once I reached my fuel
limit I turned and headed home tracking a straight line. Again very turbulent
and also very windy, so a reduced cruise speed for comfort again. All this
bouncing around made it necessary to land for a comfort stop, so I landed at a
little private sealed strip nestled in between the hills. A very turbulent
circuit was experienced followed but another squeaker of a landing. Took care
of business and headed home to Atherton. As I flew along, passing over a
friends coffee plantation, I got a call to come and have a cup of coffee. I
had never landed at Nat's strip because it is only 800m with very tall Gum
trees on the approach end. I literally weaved between the trees and made a
lovely 3 pointer, rolling to a stop 100m before the end of the strip. Had a
drink of water and a chat (I don't drink coffee, but Nat is hopeful he'll
convert me) and flew back to Atherton.

As I was leaving, the hanger after packing up my KR2, I was reflected on the
past 2 days flying and thought "I'm finally getting the hang of flying this
KR2".

78 hours and can't get enough of it. YHAA

KR> Finally Home from trip!

2008-10-12 Thread ifly...@aol.com
Hello to Kr-landia! It has been a very busy two months with 41768. A
little update on what Ive been doing.

Elaine (9yr daughter) and I left Valdosta GA and flew to Tulsa OK on
July 3rd to visit with my sister. Did that 840 mile leg in 5.1 hours on 26
gallons of fuel. I had a little headwind but not bad. Cool weather at
11,000'.
My dad flew his Cessna 180 down from New Richmond WI and we spent the 4th
there in Tulsa. We then flew to New Richmond WI together in formation. The
180 does about 145 mph at 70% power. I was at about 50% and 19"MAP keeping
up.
My mom took a few nice in-flight photos that I will try to post somehow.
We did that trip in about 5 hours as well.

I sent a week or so helping my dad with a Cessna 170B that was ground
looped and damaged - rebuilding everything forward from the rear door post.
Lots of riviting and making panels.

New Richmond had a small air show and my dad and I displayed our planes
on the tarmac there. A couple KR guys came by to visit. Del Magsam had his
Corvair powered Sonex there as well.

On Friday before Oshkosh Elaine and I flew to Waupaca WI to visit Pete
Broadagan and see his Corvair KR2-S. Very nice and well on his way - it is
running now. He and his wife took great care of us. The local airport had a
great cookout there and many airplanes flew in from all over for the get
together.

We then left on Saturday enroute to Broadhead for the Peitenpol fly-in
bu never landed there due to really bad weather that ha moved in so we went to
Madison WI where we had been invited to stay with Dick Hartwig (Kr wanabee)
and his wife. Dick invited us for a hanger Swing dance that EAA was
promoting. What FUN!. Elaine and I got to try our hand at dancing (not a
pretty
sight) and we listend to the sounds of Glen Miller music all night from "The
Ladies must Swing" big band. They were very good. We also got the
opportunity
to get a tour of "Fuddy Duddy" a B-17 that is on loan to EAA since
"Aluminum Overcast" is under repairs. We had opportunity to get some picture
of
N41768 under the wing of the B-17. Looks really neat! The main tires of the
B-17 are taller that the KR!

Sunday - After a peasant visit with the Hartwig family we flew to
Hartford and had a brat and soda with the likes of Mark Jones, Mark Langford,
and a
bunch of other Kr enthusiast. Joe Weber flew his KR in from Cuba City WI
and we flew to Oshkosh together from there.
Charlie Becker (EAA Homebuilt manager) got me prime real estate in the
homebuilt section. He had me parked right in front of the new Homebuilt
Headquarters and had made signs for my plane about building a low cost plane.
Some of
you may have seen an article that was done about it. My dad arrived in
Oshkosh the day before with the 180. He was a former mission aviation pilot
with
MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship) and helped out at the MAF booth in Hanger
D. The 180 was his first plane he used in the mission field in Mexico in
1969 (after I turned 1) which we were able to purchase about 15 years ago and
rebuild. It has a lot of interesting misson modifications on it.

Monday -Monday - Oshkosh- was a lot of fun but I spent most of my time
talking to people about the KR - the Corvair Conversion and flying. Elaine
spent most of her time at the local YMCA and the EAA museum. I met a lot of
known faces and many new ones. Forgive me but I am sure I will forget most
names. It was nice to meet Burt Rutan and see Spaceship One and Global Flyer
and see all the cool planes.

A note about Oshkosh and KRs - WHY aren't there more KRs showing up ?
There is a need for low cost fun airplane to be displayed there. People are
VERY interested in the KR simplicity and uniqueness. I hope to see more there
next year. Very few people go and check out the RV's and Glassair anymore -
they are pricey and look all the same. People are interested is something
different. Too bad Janet Rand doesnt show up anymore but I sure hope more KR
will start going. There were a total of 4 KRs all week. Mine, Joe Weber's,
the Porgapolis Pig, and another from a couple who trailered to to Fon Du Lac
and the flew it in. A very nice KR!

Elaine got a ride back to Valdosta with Glenda McKlewee and I flew back
to New Richmond in formation with my dad on Monday after Oshkosh. More nice
photos I can show soon. I work on a King Air and a 414 for a week to make
some dough and then the following Sunday we gat a message that my grandmother
had passed away. My dad and I ended up flying people to South Dakota in the
180 for the funeral that week. I really enjoy flying with my dad. We both
have Cessna 180 time - I have about 120 hours and he has a little over 7500
hours...it was great fun.

The following week was work with my dad. We are rebuilding a Cessna
Turbo 206 and I took my paint

KR> Finally a Pilot again

2008-10-12 Thread Dan Heath
Well, today I got signed off to be a pilot again after 10 years away from
flying. I did not remember that the 172 was so hard to fly. I guess that the
KR spoiled me. It seemed like I had to muscle it to make it go where I
needed it to go. It was most difficult to operate the elevator without trim
and in slow flight, I thought my arms were going to give out. It was like
flying a brick.

He said that I had a smooth touch with the plane, which is the nicest thing
that anyone has ever said about my flying. Come to think of it, it is the
only nice thing anyone has ever said about my flying.

Even though I am officially signed off, he told me that I need to take some
remedial "landings 101", which I have set up for tomorrow morning.

Putting in the new fuel sender probe tonight, so maybe it won't be long now.
I think I NEED BILL.

KR> Finally, I've started!

2008-10-12 Thread John Bavington
After reading about all of your building adventures for the last 6
months, I've finally begun my own project.
I've picked up a trailer load of assorted bits and pieces, including
plans and 2S supplements from a builder who's not continuing.

At the moment there's no two bits of timber stuck together, but all
the control surface hinges have been made, as well as WAFs and gear
attach thingys, control cable pulleys, and all sorts of other little
parts that will - no doubt - be crucial when I finally work out what
they are.

I've also got all the ply (Australian Hoop Pine 'cos Spruce is way too
expensive here) and enough foam for just about everything.

Have a look at what's happening at:
http://au.geocities.com/johnbavington

Cheers,
John.
