I certainly understand that, though I thought we had a zip file squirreled

I also checked the Finnish page as we also had a request on the list for that

Greetings Oriol, and welcome to OpenOffice;

We have two types of translation, and they have different processes.

The first is translating the User Interface (UI),and Help for the software
itself. For this we currently Pootle.
For this you need to request a Pootle account, instructions for which can be
found in the following section of our Pootle User Guide at
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Pootle_User_Guide/Registration_and_Login#Registration.We
have 3 different variants for the language currently in Pootle: Valencian,
Valencian AVL, Valencian RACV.with both UI, and Help files.

The second is translation of the website. This entails us sending you a file
with the critical strings that need to be translated. For this just send an
e-mail to this mailing list asking to translate the website into your
language.

As far as a credit is concerned; there a hundreds if not thousands of people
who contribute so giving individual credit to people is just not possible.
There is a general credit given in Help->About OpenOffice as well as a link to
the volunteer cwiki page. You can create a cwiki account and then ask for it
to be white-listed to add your name to that page. For instructions on how to
do that see https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Wiki+Home.
Click the signup link in the upper righrt corner to create the account and
then read the second paragraph on that page for instructions on how to have it

Re: FI translation help ?

2023-01-24 Thread Keith N. McKenna
Greetings Pekka and thank you for your interest in contributing to the Finnish
translation of Apache OpenOffice®.

There are tow areas of translation that that we deal with. First is the
translation of the User Interface (UI) and Help Files (Help) for the software
itself; then there is translation of the web site to your native language.

Each of these have different processes to cary them out.

For translation of the UI anf Help we use an instance of the translation
software Pootle and we have User Guide for that software written and
maintained by volunteer translators.

Translation of the website is fairly manual at this point, but there is a user
guide being drafted currently.

If you would reply to this mailing list: mailto:l10N@openoffice.apache.org
with either/or both ares you would like to help in we can get you started.

We look forward to hearing from you soon and look forward to working with you.

Greetings, and welcome to Apache OpenOffice. There are 2 different translation
operations that can be done.

1: Translation of the software itself using our instance of Pootle

2: Translation of the website into your native language.

Both have very different translation processes.
For #1 we have an online guide that you can peruse. (1)

Most of our translation work is from English to another language. The code and
documentation are written in English, so a Pootle account to work on English
is not needed. One place your English skills would be very appreciated is our
documentation team. We are currently updating our User Guides and need people
who can help in this area. If you are interested in helping with the
documentation write to d...@openoffice.apache.org. We will help you get

Jakub, greetings and welcome to Apache OpenOffice;

There are a number of translation tasks that need to be accomplished.

1) Translation of the User Interface and Help files for the Software itself
A) for this we have an instance of the Pootle Translation software. If
you
are interested in this The following link will take you to the
section of
the online Pootle Manuel that describes how to register
for an account
on that system.
B)
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Pootle_User_Guide/Registration_and_Login#Registration

2) Translating the Website into your language.
A) We are finishing up some documentation on how to do that. However
there
are people on this mailing list that can help you through that
now.

If you are interested in either of those you should subscribe to this mailing
list by sending an e-mail to l10n-subscr...@openoffice.apache.org. You will
receive a reply that may end up in your spam folder, so be sure that you check
there as well. You should reply to that as well. Once you receive a reply to
that second e-mail, be sure to check your spam folder as well, You will be
subscribed to the list and than you will be able to send to, and receive
messages from the list.

Again thank you for your interest in Apache OpenOffice, and I look forward to
seeing you on the list.

location of language data in code

2022-02-27 Thread Keith N. McKenna

Greetings,

We have had some inquiries about transtating languages not
currently in pootle. What information would be required to
add a language?

Is there information needed in the code itself to support
a language, and if where in the code would I I look see if
it is already there?

Welcome to Apache OpenOffice, and thank you for your
interst in translating the software.

Bidouille has already directed you directions to for
obtaining a Pootle account, and Africans is already
there waiting to be worked on.

As far as Zulu, it is not currently in Pootle, and
would have to check the code to see if the necessary
data is there to support it, and if not what it would
take to add it.

I look forward to seeing your request for a pootle account

I am doing good. As I am in western Massachusetts, we only got about 6
inches (15.24cm) or so of snow. along the coast they got upwards of 3 feet

As the have been a number of requests lately to translate the
OpenOffice.org website, I wanted to ask if there is a documented process
of how to go about this.

I know that we used to have generic set of files that we would send to the
requester to translate via a zip file. Do we still have that as an option
or should something new be documented so that we can refer potential
translators to it?

Greetings Herdis;

The best way to contribute is to request a Pootle account by sending a request
to this list using the following template:

Ask for a Pootle account by sending an email:
 To: l10n@openoffice.apache.org
 Subject: New Pootle Account
 Body:
Hello my name is .. and I'm from ..
Please create a Pootle account for me. I state that my contributions are
under
the Apache 2 license and I will work on ..
 My preferred username is ..

An administrator will create the account and you you when it is done. A
temporary password will to you under separate cover and you will be prompted
to change it to your preferred password on first login.

I look forward to seeing your request and welcome to Apache OpenOffice.

I strongly disagree. A translation error is just as much a bug as an
error in the source code is. We do not tell people to not submit a bug
just submit a PR to fix it and we should not tell people just submit and
anonymous change to Pootle to fix it.

Not everyone wants or has the time to volunteer, but may be willing to
submit a bug report to Bugzilla. It is my decided opinion that we should
support and encourage that as a way of making AOO better. Let us never
loose site of the fact that "The Apache Way" includes many manner of
ways to contribute, and taking the time to submit a bug report against a
translation is just one more way to contribute.

Keith

first. This is because the UI MUST be 100% translated to be included in

The language requirement for Release is that the UI be 100% translated. There
is no requirement that the help file be translated as far as I remember. Of
course we would like the help to be translated also.

Pootle had not been refreshed from the code in quite some time. As a
result Pootle no longer reflected any particular version of the
software. The thrust of the work Mechtilde did was to get the two back
in sync. Ongoing development may well have changed some strings, moved
some around and even introduced new ones. It is not unexpected that
those type of changes would happen. Probably the driving force behind
getting this done early was to give translators time to thoroughly check
the translations.

My apologies for the very late reply, it seems that this message was
overlooked by me. Part of the problem was that the Armenian language was
not created in our translation software. This has now been done and it
is available to start the translation process.

We have a user guide to Pootle, our translation software, available at:

resource to using the software. As always any questions our comments
that you may have are welcome at this mailing list.

There is an localize.sdf file at
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/openoffice/trunk/extras/l10n/source/br/
br is the ISO 639-1 code for Breton.

I ask the question as the Breton Genlang Project appears to have all the
same files as our normal AOO projects just in one project rather than
broken out into separate ui and help projects. I was hoping there was a
possibility to use them to kick-start a new translation.

Any other info I can provide I will gladly track down if possible.

The best way to get involved is to sign up for a pootle account. That
way you can not only translate but also approve or change suggestions
made anonymously. A Guide to using pootle including instructions for

Actually it is not illogical at all. My understanding is that that
anyone can make suggestions as a guest but all suggestions need to be
accepted or rejected by a registered translator. One of the permissions
that are granted to translators when they request a pootle account is to
be able to accept suggestions. That is why you were able to accept your
own suggestions.

There are two projects for OpenOffice that need translating Apache
OpenOffice 4.x which is now at
100% and Apache OpenOffice 4.x Help
 which is only 1%. Though
the help is not required to be translated to be included in a release it
is much better if it is. The next step would be to work on translating
the help.

Actually the only way I have ever logged in is with my committer
credentials.
I just tried again with the on-apache.org test account I created with
the same results as before. I received the notice that the e-mail had
been sent, but as yet I have not received the e-mail to reset.

Andrea I did send a private e-mail to Anas with a forced password. I
just forgot to send a note to the list saying I had sent it.

This is the response I get when I try to reset using my @apache.org
address: The user account associated with this e-mail address cannot
reset the password.

Andrea; so sorry this reply took so long. I thought I had sent it the
same day you posted. Again I apologize for the lateness of this reply.

Ahmed;
I have sent you a new password  by private e-mail.  You should now be
able to login.

Please understand that OpenOffice is an all volunteer project and as
such responses on the lists may not be as quick as we might like them to be.

Ping Andrea Another problem with https://translate.apache.org/accounts/password/reset

2018-01-29 Thread Keith N. McKenna
It appears we have another problem with a new user not able to reset
their password: See the thread from Ahmed Alawsie. If you could let me
know the steps you were able to resolve the other problems I will take
care of Ahmed's.

As this is the third or fourth time this has happened I tried creating a
new user under my name and a different email. After saving I went to the
change password page and entered my alternate email and received the
standard response about an email being sent with instructions. It has
know been several hours and have not received the instructions via e-mail.

Is there anything else we can do or is it time to submit an infra jira.

Regards
Keith
