Hi, Today I received my card from Marji in USA. It is a beautiful angel that I will hang on my tree when I put it up at the weekend. Re: [lace] Kantcentrum, Brugge
Sad news. According to the Belgian newspapers the Kantcentrum in Brugge has ceased trading (or maybe limited trading -I don't know the Belgian procedures). So no lace summer school, no Kant magazine During half term (2 weeks ago) I was in Brugge and visited Kantcentrum. I visited the museum, went in the church and were told that the ladies still did the demonstrating in the afternoons. The shop is still open and I bought a lovely book by Brigitte Bellon on new Christmas decorations called Neue Weihnachts - Kloppelmuster. When I was in the shop I was chatting to the lady about another lace museum that I had visited in Brugge 5 years ago. I was told that it had been run by the local council and had since been closed down but she didnt say anything to me about them closing down. Hi Ann, I have something that looks like a mini rolling pin that you wind the lace around. I bought it many years ago at a lace day but sorry I can't remember who it was from Hope this helps. Anne Nicholas Middx England - Original Message - I have a couple of yards of lace edging to make and I don't have a roller pillow. Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep the worked lace neat and tidy apart from just folding it over? My DH is a dab hand at woodwork so could make something if he had a picture or a diagram. [lace] Lace Day
Hi everyone, I have been busy preparing for our annual Lace Day and have noticed a big decline in sales of tickets and wondered if anyone else has noticed this too? Our lace days have been held for nearly 30 years and we used to sell 100 tickets and have a waiting list. I have noticed that each year the number goes down and we are seriously considering making this our last lace day as we are not even covering the cost of renting the hall this year. In this light I am writing to tell you about the Isleworth Lace Day that is to be held next Saturday 28th June. We are 4 groups of lacemakers who are all taught by the same teacher (Julie Nicholls) and we all come together for our lace day once a year. This year we have 3 suppliers attending who are Makit, Fireside Reflections and Lacewing Designs. Julie will be giving a talk and demonstration on mounting lace. The lace day is to be held at St. Stephens Church Hall, Parkside Rd Hounslow, Middx. which is close to the M3 and M4 motorways and a 10 minute walk from Hounslow mainline station (direct from Waterloo) Tickets are avaiable on the day at the door and shoppers are welcome at any time in the day. Please email me for any more information and we look forward to seeing you for a great day of lacemaking. Anne Nicholas Feltham Middx. [lace-chat] Lancaster
Hi, I have just had a call from my son who is in Lancaster visiting his girlfriend who is at university there. He told me of a new shop that opened there today called Bobbins and Beads (I think) As today was their opening day there was someone there making lace so he spoke to her about his mum who makes lace. He always was the chatty type !! He also spoke to the shop owner who told him that they are in the process of making a website. I said that I didn't think that Lancaster was particularly famous for its lacemaking but he thinks I'm wrong as there are a few shops there selling bobbins. Can anyone tell me who is right please? [lace-chat] Re: school dinners
Hi Liz, At the primary school that I work in the children are only entitled to a free school dinner if their parents are on income support otherwise it costs £1.60 a day. The Jamie Oliver programme has had a brilliant effect at our school and because of it last week our canteen stopped selling crisps and chocolate bars at lunch time and have adopted a 'Healthy Meals' programme. As far as our staff were concerned this should of happened a long time ago and it is a shame that this doesn't stop the children who bring their own packed lunch from bringing crisps (they are not allowed chocolate in their packed lunch anyway) Hope this answers your question but it does vary from borough to borough and so not all schools will be the same. Best wishes, Anne Nicholas Hanworth Middx. England We have been watching the Jamie Oliver TV series on the School dinners, and his effort to get decent food into the schools. Do the kids have to pay for these dinners, and if so, how much? I have a feeling they are free, but not sure. Has anyone successfully managed to send an entry to the Lace Guild Advent Calendar competition? I have never entered the competition before and thought this year I would give it a go . I got the same error report as you so I copied and pasted the form onto Word and e-mailed it to the Lace Guild. I then thought that I had better e-mail David to see if he had received it. He hadn't and told me to do it again directly to him. David wrote back again and said that it hadn't worked and he sent me an order to send the answers in not using the entry form. Re: [lace-chat] Junket
Hi Nicole, Good to see you back on Arachne !! Hope you are well. Now I have an e-mail address for you as I couldn't remember the one you gave me when you were over in the summer !!! Anne Nicholas Hanworth, Middx. England When I lived in the UK a few years ago you could find vegetarian rennet in the supermarket (either Waitrose or Saintsbury's). And there must have been a recipe for Junket on the package as I remember trying it -not very interesting as I remember it. I did enjoy making fresh cheese though. Here in the US you used to be able to find it sometimes in supermarkets. I have not seen any around for a few years now My aunt's favorite ice cream recipe uses it so I tend to keep an eye out for it (not that I have had any of that ice cream for years -I am sure I don't even have the recipe for it!) Speaking of ice cream, and since everything is so quiet here at the moment, I have been making the best frozen yogurt. I mix together the zest and juice of one meyer lemon (a very fragrant lemon that is more mild that the normal lemons, use a regular lemon if you don't have any) with yogurt (about 1 1/2 cups). I add sugar so that it is barely sweet and then I freeze it in a ice cream maker (I have a very small one that holds about 2cups of liquid). The resulting ice cream is quite tart and refreshing. It is best with whole milk yogurt but I have also made it with nonfat. I have made similar mixes with other fruit but the lemon is definitely the best. I am debating making some but with the cold it is not as tempting as it was in the summer! [lace-chat] lacemaking family
Hi, My lacemaking family began with my aunty Barbara who taught herself from books and makes the most perfect lace and is an inspiration to us all !! About 15 or so years ago when my sister Alison was on holiday with her she taught her to make lace. This proved a bit tricky when she came home and many a lesson were taught over the phone. Very expensive !! My sister then looked up a local group which was Isleworth Lacemakers taught by Julie Nicholls and joined after while on the waiting list. Alison then taught my daughter Beverley who was about 11 at the time. Beverley made lace for about a year but as she can not sit in one place for more than ten minutes this was not too successful. Alison then suggested that I learn using Beverley's equipment so that is how I started making lace 11 years ago. I also joined Isleworth Lacemakers. About 6 months later Mum decided if they can do it so can I so she started as well !! Anne Nicholas Hanworth, Middx. [lace-chat] survey
Hi, The piece of lace that I am working on has been on the pillow since 2000 !! It is a piece of church lace from an Eva Kortelati (sp?) book that I started in memory of my dad who died in 2000. My mum made some too and that has been in the church since 2001. The lace was originally intended to go on a table but is now going to be used on a windowsill as realistically I would never get it finished !! The trouble is every time that I think that I have finished I find out that it needs to be a bit longer. I now have only one more three inch repeat to do and then all I have to do is mount it on the linen. I am planning to have it in the church by the end of the summer. We'll see !! [lace-chat] SP Thanks
Dear Secret Pal in Australia, Thank you so much for my parcel that arrived today. Thank you for the notelets they always come in handy and the little notebook is great. I have never got anything to write on in my handbag and usually end up using scraps or old receipts ! I have to say that I have already eaten the mint chocolate and it was yummy ! You are right we do not get either of these here in England and I wish that we did !! In your note you mentioned a cross stitch project but there was not one in the package. I wonder if customs removed it ? I will look forward to receiving my parcel from Australia every month and hope that your pal is as good to you !!
