Re: [lace] Speed and efficiency in lace?
I revisited it and watched again and noticed that when she made the leaf that she did it the way that I've seen the ladies in Camariñas do it - several passes then pull it up. I also noticed that she had a loop at the side of her leaf, making it a holly leaf. So yes she was fast because it was her livelihood but was it as accurate as we like to make it - probably not, but then it we aren't making lace to put bread on the table like she was. Interesting that it shows the lady making a fairly narrow Beds edging, and then shows the sunshade with a very deep, probably Bucks lace frill. Re: [lace] Speed and efficiency in lace?
My sister and I have watched the ladies making lace in Camariñas on many occasions. They work very fast and we were intrigued by the way they make leaves. Across and back 3 or 4 times or more and then pull them up into leaf shape. We asked one lady if she could go slower so we could watch how she did it, but for her it was almost impossible to slow down very much. She explained that the children go across and back once, then as they get older they add more times as they get more experience. We do notice that while they work very quickly, they also spend a lot of time sorting their bobbins to get them in the right order and without twists before they continue. They are making lace for sale so obviously need to work as fast as they can. For me, it is my hobby and my relaxation I don't need to speed along. I do make my cloth stitch as described before if I'm doing something that has expanses of cloth stitch. I do a lot of Milanese and Idrija style lace, so don't often have large areas. Just my 2 cents worth. Re: [lace] Hand carved bobbins
I still have (and use occasionally) some bobbins that I carved from dowel when I first started. I had bought 6 pairs of bobbins while I was in England on holiday and then when I came home to Canada and started on lesson 2 or 3 in the book I was using the instruction was 'wind 10 pairs of bobbins'. I had no idea if there were bobbin makers in here and I didn't know of the bobbin makers in England, so I set to and carved my own. Re: [lace] lathes
As Alex says there are certainly other bobbins which are hand carved, South Bucks bobbins for example. I haven't studied mine, but my sister said it was the body of the bobbin that made her suspicious, not the neck. Agreed, the Egyptians used a second person to turn a pulley with a rope as power (1300 BC) and the sprung pole lathes date back at least to the Jorvik Viking excavations under York. As those were straightforward to make from locally available materials there is no reason for them to have been rare. Wood turning was used for all sorts of furniture and eating utensils and there was a Guild of Turners set up pre 1347 because at that point they were told that turned measuring vessels had to conform with City of London standards. When the demand was there for bobbins it would have been a good way to use up the scraps of wood left over. All this good information from my sister. Re: [lace] History of lassen
Although Lassen by that name is probably Belgian, surely it doesn't mean they are the only people who ever thought of the overlap and sew idea. They might have copied and adapted from the way that finished and bought lace had been cut and joined to use in garments by skilled dressmakers for decades or even centuries On a slightly different subject are the three whip stitches on each space really needed always/ever? In both Ulrike's 'The Beginning of the End' and Bridget's 'Practical Skills', they only whip twice in each space and they probably both did a lot of research on this. If the sewing thread is a lot finer than the main thread, there may be room for three in some places. There will be some smaller gaps (such as just inside the footside edge passive on the diagram where there is a tiny triangular gap) where there may only be room for one or two stitches. Forcing three stitches into every space will guarantee some distortion and will help it to look thicker than it needs to. Re: [lace] Kopek/whirlpool stitch
Susan Hottle wrote: Even so, it seems like it would be faster/easier to work the kopeks after the fact rather than swizzle the bobbins in & around & over & through. Might be an idea Susan, but if you are making Russian lace, the fillings are done at the same time as the lace, when you get to the last pinhole around an area of filling, that is when you do it. Also, working it at the same time means you don't have to rewind bobbins to do the fillings - you don't have to sew in new pairs and you don't have to sew out the pairs when you have done the filling and thereby have lots of knots. Some fillings are only a few lines of braids and picots, others a little more complex with trails going round, kopeks etc. In some larger pieces you may have many, many patches of fillings, so a lot of joins. Much easier to do it as you go. Re: [lace] CORRECTION: Kopek/Whirlpool filling is a Woven Spider's Web
Woven spiders web is an embroidery term where a single thread is either woven under and over all the way around, or alternatively goes forward under two bars then doubles back to go back over the one it just came under and the next one ie two bars forward, one back back all the time, with all the stitches going in the same direction. This gives ridges on the side where you are doubling back. This is an embroidery term as distinct from a lace making term. Clare was asking about bobbin lace kopeks/whirlpool fillings (Bridget Cook's description). The bobbin lace kopeks are worked with sewn weaving at every bar using two threads at a time, (so both sides look the same) and allowing the attractive coloured rings or wedges. Yes, kopeks can be made in two colours creating stripes and patterns. Superficially similar, they are worked in a completely different way. Kopek is what they are called in Russian lace which is where they are used the most. Many stitches have different names, one of the most basic being cloth stitch and whole stitch. None of them is wrong, just different depending on where you are learning or what book you use. I don’t agree that it is a CORRECTION = changing the heading to Woven spiders Web is a not a correction, it is just another name for it and a different method. And we know very well that the same thing is called by various names in different places. None of them is wrong or needs to be corrected in my opinion. Re: [lace] Bobbin question
Many of the English bobbins are made from fruit wood. Most regions would have grown fruit trees and so it would have been readily available. I have a couple of the Malmsbury bobbins that are tapered style. From my memory of them they are fairly dark coloured and therefore probably not fruit wood. Re: [lace] Downton Lace
From the Downton Lace that I have done, and patterns that I have seen, all the lace is lengths, not motifs. I've just checked the book I have by Shelly Canning of Downton Lace from Salisbury Cathedral, there are no corners either. So you don't need to have pairs hung on one by one. When I did a course, I did wind my bobbins in pairs and then rather than cutting them apart, I tied a knot with however many pairs I needed to hang on each pin to start. When I got there and watched her flitting round the room from person to person advising them - work c-t-c or whatever to that next pen then I'll be back it stuck me that some of them would be stuck when she wasn't there to tell them what to do to get to the next pin. When she spared me a couple of minutes she looked at what I'd done, sniffed, turned her nose up and said "Not very good is it. But of course, you can't make good lace unless you use linen thread and you are using cotton (last word said in a very derogatory tone)." Unfortunately, I didn't know enough about lace at that time to challenge that, but I do remember making a lot of lace in cotton before I even ever thought about getting some linen thread. Some of the ladies from that class and I formed the very first lace group in Ottawa and some of them were still struggling with the bookmark months later because nothing had been explained that they were doing cloth stitch diamonds, or whole stitch fans or whatever. Re: [lace] Block pillow question
I stand corrected - if you need to use your half blocks to work on, so be it. On the other hand, if you have a block pillow in a frame, you cannot overhang a part of a block even temporarily, and having a space at the bottom with no block in it does not give very good support for your bobbins. I understand the use of the half block if you are turning a corner, but don't see the need for a half block usage if you are making a book mark which is 1.5 blocks in length - why not just use 2 blocks. If you constantly use your half block to work on, the foam will break down more because you can't rotate it like you can with a full block. Re: [lace] Bucks prickings
I raised this very question, not whether the pricking had been pricked or not but about putting in pins, when I did a course on Downton lace. It is the same thought, did the lacemakers put in pins on the longer rows of ground or not. I tried it and after putting in a couple of pins at the edge, I then went down the row with no pins until I got near the pattern. I then put the pins in because I was still learning and didn't want to have that as a problem to not making the lace correctly. I found that it was quicker to do that than put the pin in at each stitch. As lacemakers also had to buy their pins which were expensive, perhaps we hear about them not using pins on the long rows of ground was because they just didn't have that many available. Do we know how the lacemakers got their patterns? Maybe they came already pricked and the lacemaker would start off with pins but as they became more accustomed to the pattern found that they could save both time and pins by not pinning all the way through the ground. Just my 2 cents worth. Re: [lace] instructions
When I first started learning (teaching myself from the old Golden Hands magazines), I heard about a lace workshop and went to see and to talk to the teacher. She was whizzing round the room from student to student and for most of them the instruction was along the lines of "do cross twist cross to the next pin hole and then I'll be back" or whatever they were supposed to be doing. When she had a moment and spoke to me I showed her what I had done - her response "Not very good is it. Of course you can't do good lace if you don't use linen thread". I admit it wasn't very good, I'd only been trying for about 2 weeks, but I did understand what I was doing. When we formed a group a couple of months later, several of those ladies were stuck - didn't know what to do or how to do it; didn't know what the stitches were called; didn't understand the concept of finishing one motif before doing the next bit, etc. etc. etc. The couple of ladies in the group who had perhaps made a little lace before the workshop had to help the others and it was several month before the bookmarks were even close to being completed in many cases. If memory serves, a particularly egregious example was calling a lace Binche because a piece resembling it had been found on a carnival costume in Binche, although the lace was never made there. Another example is dubbing things Cluny after a piece found in the Cluny museum in Paris. But, of course, it is the language being used in the late 19th and early 20th century by dealers and auctioneers that has found its way into the catalogue system. I have been consulting a number of books. Levey, of course, Toomer, Antique Laces, Identifying types and Techniques, Gwynne’s the Illustrated Dictionary of Lace, Kurella’s Guide to Lace and Linens, and Pat Earnshaw’s three books, the Dictionary of Lace, the Identification of Lace and Bobbin and Needle laces Identification and Care. Interestingly, Pat Earnshaw’s books are not necessarily consistent. But, that serves as a powerful reminder that whenever you write something and publish it, you immediately find out you were wrong about something. I also have a dictionary by J. Coene called Kantlexicon. In addition, I have my vast library of books on individual laces. One thing that has been a pleasant surprise is that it is sometimes quite easy to search the older books on google books using a word search. Does anyone have other suggestions for good ID books? When I've gone out demonstrating, we have a fish pattern (like the head of the snake. but smaller) which doesn't take much to finish. Re: [lace] restoration of antique lace bobbins?
Brian asked whether we should restore old bobbins or leave them in poor state. I think you should ask why you want the bobbin. Do you collect bobbins as a collection of old bobbins or is this bobbin one you want to use? If it the latter, then a certain amount of restoration is necessary. I hear the comment from people that they won't use an old bobbin in case the spangle breaks. If the bobbin has been in use for 100 years, the spangle has probably broken before, so it is likely that it isn't the original. Surely it is better to use these wonderfully smooth bobbins that have seen years of lace making already, than to leave them mouldering in a drawer or box rarely to see the light of day. Many of the spangles on the old bobbins are quite large, and I have no problem to make it smaller and be able to use the bobbin. I do keep the old beads separate and use them for old bobbins if one comes along with no spangle. I bought a handful of bobbins from e-bay but when they arrived they smelled of tobacco smoke and were very dirty. My sister, Jacquie, cleaned them and by the time I saw them they were in a very good condition. Another couple of bobbins I had, leopards but only holes where the pewter had originally been, were given to a metal worker friend of one of my students who put in new spots. Quite expensive, I think, and probably not something that I would do on a regular basis, but she had them done as a gift for me. So, I guess the answer to your question, Brian, is why do you have them and what do you want them for. Re: [lace] Bobbin lace in Celtic nations?
It seems to me that while it is good for Sally to find out about lace in Celtic nations, there probably won't be much time for her to pass on the information she has gleaned to the people who are wandering about. What they will be interested in, is to see her making lace. I might suggest finding a nice Celtic knot pattern and working that. Whether people in Celtic nations ever made such a thing (probably not) isn't really the point, it is to give the feel of the designs and for people to see lace being made so that they have a good time while they are there. Just my two cents worth Malvary in Ottawa where it is supposed to go up to 12c today (get rid of more of my snow banks). - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Working an edging on a roller pillow
While I agree with Alice that changing the passive for a worker occasionally might help to stop gathering, this is only possible if the lace is all one colour. Often a different colour passive is used on the footside (perhaps to match a fan worker), and in these cases it isn't possible to change out the worker Malvary in Ottawa where we have another sunny day and I'm generating electricity like mad. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Working an edging on a roller pillow
My first thought was - 'how much lace are you leaving pinned?' Obviously on the footside you need to leave as much pinned as possible so that you can't pull it up. Next thought - make your footside passive pair an obviously different pair so that each time you come to it you know. Then you can make sure that when you are tensioning you will be more aware not to pull on that specific pair. Next thought - if you roll the lace you have worked on to a wooden roller you would only gather the bit between your pillow and the roller. Then if you accidentally pull the passive thread you could ease the passive thread back with a pin to ungather it. Just my immediate comments. Re: [lace] Pins
Kathleen wrote The pin question isn't the sort of thing that is taught - except that I was told always to leave pins in for 24 hours, to allow the thread toset in place. I would make a couple of points - this is a question which crops up from time to time and usually generates lots of response. First of all if working on a length of lace on a roller pillow (and less so on a block pillow depending on the size of both the block and the lace), pins do not stay in the lace for 24 hours, probably an hour or two if you are sitting at a long session of lacemaking. Pins get taken from the back and put in at the front. Secondly - lace isn't jelly, it doesn't need to set. Thirdly - I agree that if I'm making a bookmark or motif I leave the pairs in round the edges - lace does shrink back a bit when the pins are taken out, so it makes more sense to take out the edges at the same time. [lace-chat] Kids!
A little boy was attending his first wedding. After the service, his cousin asked him, How many women can a man marry? Sixteen, the boy responded. His cousin was amazed that he had an answer so quickly. How do you know that? Easy, the little boy said. 4 better, 4 worse, 4 richer, 4 poorer. After a church service on Sunday morning, a young boy suddenly announced to his mother, Mom, I've decided to become a minister when I grow up. That's okay with us, but what made you decide that? Well, said the little boy, I have to go to church on Sunday anyway, and I figure it will be more fun to stand up and yell, than to sit and listen. A 6 year old was overheard reciting the Lord's prayer at a church service, And forgive us our trash passes, as we forgive those who passed trash against us. A boy was watching his father, a pastor, write a sermon. How do ya know what to say? he asked. Why, God tells me. Oh, then why do you keep crossing things out? -- A little girl became restless as the preacher's sermon dragged on and on. Finally, she leaned over to her mother and whispered, Mommy, if we give him the money now, will he let us go? Ms. Terri asked her Sunday School class to draw pictures of their favourite Bible stories. She was puzzled by Kyle's picture, which showed four people on an air plane. She asked him which story it was meant to represent? The Flight to Egypt, was his reply. Pointing to each figure, Ms. Terri said, That must be Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus. But who's the fourth person? Oh, that's Pontius - the pilot! Re: [lace] Preferred cloth size
With regard to size - I wonder what would have been used in medieval times. Were hankies used? I would have thought the cover cloth for a basket would probably be appropriate to the use of the time, but was there bobbin lace? I think probably a punto en aria style which would be fairly quick to do - a long length and gathered at the corners then you could do it on your bolster pillow without having to move it. It could also be quite narrow. Re: [lace] My thread confusion
I have used Filato per tombolo di Cantu, both for making Cantu and for other things. As you have Brenda's book you can work out what size pattern it works with. I find that it is quite firm when worked and makes up very well. I used it for one of my samples for my Lace Guild Assessment. The GR25 is 25 grams and comes, if I'm not mistaken in bleached (white), half bleached (off white-beige) and unbleached (ecru). My first reel was bought when I did Cantu with Mary McPeek many years ago at the Finger Lakes Lace Weekend. When I got to class (early), I already had all my bobbins wound as I'd contacted Mary early and bought the thread from Holly van Sciver. As others were busy winding their bobbins, I decided to have a couple of minutes in the sales room. When I got back to class, several ladies were rewinding my bobbins with some thread that Mary McPeek had given them as they hadn't planned ahead. Class started almost immediately after so I didn't have time to put MY thread back on the bobbins and had to make do with the very old stuff provided. The bobbins were would every which way but up, some one way, some the other. The hitches ranged from single to double to a dreadful knot that took ages to loosen. I may sound calm, writing about it now, but I was SOOO angry that they would interfere with someone else's things. If my bobbins weren't wound I could perhaps understand that they were being helpful. I kept myself to myself for the rest of the weekend and didn't talk to any of my classmates because I thought I'd be very rude if I did. The other side of it was that I finished up the thread on the bobbins and only had the corner done and no thread to finish it. Another frustration and feeling of anger against all those who interfered. At Lace convention if there are part reels, I usually buy them, as I enjoy using the thread and have got over my earlier feelings. I also enjoy doing Cantu and like Sue wish there were more hours in the day to do more of what I enjoy. I had changed the ground to Rose Ground and after I was turning the 3rd corner I noticed that Iâd done Torchon Ground just after the 2nd corner, so I started retro-lacing. Of course, Iâd taken out many of the pins by then so it took a while to replace the pins and work backwards.
