[lace] Glue

2011-10-23 Thread VivienneWalton
Hi, all the lace you see on my stall and web site have the knots glued with
fray check. I have been doing it for 28 years with no discolouration.
Though I was told years ago that USA Fray check id slightly different from the
UK one. I don't know. I do know it is fine. However. Do not use the bottle
to apply, Cut off the top, dip a bodkin in the glue and just touch the
knot. Also do not use on silk as it takes forever to dry and finally don't use
it on black as it seems to ever so slightly lighten the knot. I was at a
show today in Tonbridge and a lady said I never talk on Arachne. I said I
do. She said what name do I used, I said my name, Vivienne. Sfe sais Oh yes,
I didn't know that was you! So in future, Vivienne/Presencia

show. We are sorry. Any of the people who were going to collect things
please get in touch. We do hope to have Iain well enough to do Tonbridge on
the
23rd. This is just up the road from us. Do have a good day and enjoy what

[lace] Sally Reason

2011-01-27 Thread VivienneWalton
Sally was a really lovely, funky girl. I loved her hats and her clothes.
Wished I was young enough to copy her style. She was as funky, kind and
lovely behind the scenes as she was to customers. Some lace suppliers are
not as nice when dealing with other bobbin painters and suppliers as they are
with customers. Sally was. I will miss seeing her. Jenny Hudson did much
to try to help Sally, often selling her bobbins when she was too poorly to
go out herself. Good on you Jenny. I'm sure Sally is in a good place now. My
thoughts go out to her mum, Vivienne

[lace] winding bobbins

2010-10-10 Thread VivienneWalton
I have tried to keep out of this as we used to be bobbin makers but however
we are not now. You should not need any thing to help you keep normal
thread on Midland bobbins. One of the ladies said wind it round a few times
over the start of the thread then change hands or go to your winder and wind
your bobbin. Then do a double hitch and you should be able to swing your
bobbin without it coming adrift. It will become slowly longer but not unwind.
If it does you are not doing the double hitch right or you have some bad
short necks, the bit at the top where you hitch the thread. Awkward threads
treat your self to a couple of hookies. We don't sell them now but other
bobbin makers do, such as Chris Parsons. You can wind these bobbins and
literally swing your hookie round your head and the thread will not come off
until you twist it off yourself! No problem Vivienne

[lace] gold plated pins!

2010-04-10 Thread VivienneWalton
Hi all, I would like your views. Though I am a supplier this is not
promoting any thing I sell but I think Lace makers need to express an opinion
on.
The people who make many of the pins in the world have been looking for a
long time at the problem of brass pins tarnishing. they tell me they are
specially treated but that they know in, their words, 6 months 2 years 5 years
they will not be the same. So they are proposing the make a gold plated
pin which they claim will stay bright and untarnished for years and years.
They say but are not fixed on it yet, the price would be similar to say our
Torchon pin but you would get say 250 as opposed to 400. I have told them I
don't think British lace makers would pay the differance. But then I
thought of the ladies who have to replace their pins so now I don't know. They
are a good kind family companya and I don't want them to waste money on some
thing that won't sell. What do you think? Vivienne

[lace] Christmas dvd

2009-10-26 Thread VivienneWalton
Hi, when we were at Tonbridge I came across a, I don't know if it is a CD
or DVD, I'm not good at that stuff, that you put in your computer and it is
like a video. It shows you how to make, I think it has 7 different
Christmas items. You print off the patterns and get visual help to do them. I
was
really impressed. She is selling it for £5.99. Louise Woodward, who
designed it, is a very modest girl who doesn't really know how to market it.
I was
really impressed and no I don't get anything from telling you about it.
She doesn't even know I am telling Arachne. I think her site is
_www.the-craft-corner_ (http://www.the-craft-corner) When you go on you
can't see it,
put DVD or CD in and it should come up with it. Hope you like it. Vivienne

Re: [lace] Rayon etc.

2009-04-23 Thread VivienneWalton
Hi, it all depends on the Rayon you use. I don't know about polyester as I
have never tried i, but I would think again quality is what counts. I use
our Rayon in most os the patterns we bring out. It does not srink when you
take the pins out. It does not spin off your bobbins it can even wash to
90. I say give it a whirl. It is the Viscose made with wood, I can't vouch
for any other but if I was producing paterns which my customer were having
trouble with they would not keep coming back for more. Best wishes, Vivienne

[lace] Rayon

2009-04-21 Thread VivienneWalton
Hi all, I think someone should point out Rayon is not a synthetic thread,
like Nylon, but a man made thread made from trees. As many of you know I use
the Rayon in many of my patterns, usually as Brenda say, as the workers.
If you get a spool of some Rayon's and Nylons and lay it down if will often
spin off the spool. The one I use doesn't come off the spool any more than
a reel of cotton does. I think for putting in colours it great. I don't
think I would make a whole item in it but for other uses I love it, Vivienne

are an older group and don't really need anything I was, as we say in the
north of England, gob smacked. We suppliers do talk to each other and I warned
others. On the other side we did Sovereign Suppliers Fair earlier in June. It
was an excellent venue, great parking, lots of space for wheel chairs, a
consideration for me at the moment, good selection of suppliers, catering and
so. Hardly any one came. They will give it one more try so if you want it to
survive think about it next year. Vivienne

Re: [lace] Ebay Biggins patterns

2008-06-22 Thread VivienneWalton
I am not going and never was going to pursue it. I just think why pay more
to a ebayer than to the original designer like Joan Kelly and Christine
Springett! He starts his bid on my patterns at £1.95. The new one is £2 and I
can
help you if you need advise. So, if no one is willing to over pay he has to
stick to the many other things he sell like ladybird books. Vivienne

Re: [lace] Lace Ebay seller

2008-06-22 Thread VivienneWalton
Hi Daphne, I haven't looked at her site but the friend who told me has. In
her history she has sold more than one copy of patterns. Does a little old lady
have more than one copy? I think she may be very savvy. We once bought a car
which we had been told had only been driven by a little old lady. We later
found we had been conned! I am not trying to stop you buying her stuff but if
you want people like Christine Springett and us at Biggins (I think the
wonderful Joan Kelly is no longer designing) to keep on designing for you all
you
need to support us. The lace world is shrinking so you all need to support
us. Joan is a wonderful (sorry Joan) old lady and if she got 10p for every
pattern of hers that has been stolen she would be a lot better off in her
retirement than she actually is. I can hold my hand up and say, even before we
designed our own patterns I never ever copied someone else's pattern. If I
really
liked it I sent off for one. This is my last email on the subject. Since I
have been in plaster, though I am working as much as I can I have a lot of
time
to think. I shall try to come up with a new subject soon. Vivienne

[lace] Vivienne Biggins/Presencia

2008-06-20 Thread VivienneWalton
Hi, I couldn't resist coming on. I don't usually. I agree with Brenda, if
you can and enjoy hand sewing your lace go ahead. I love making lace and have
made more than most. I hate sewing and don't do any. I machine all my lace.
Though now, so I can get on to the next piece, someone else does it for me.
When
I go round shows I have seen beautiful lace ruined by the hand sewing to the
fabric and also the sewings. So when I talk to the ladies I tell them if
they have lots of lace laying in drawers and folders waiting for middles they
are never going to do machine them in. Nervous? Buy some of the machine made
cheap lace bundles readily available from markets and practice around a
handkerchief. I had a lady ring me 3 weeks later to say she had put middles in
20
pieces of lace which were now all over her home looking lovely. So some of you
ladies say it is horrible each to their own. I have seen lots of horrible
hand stitched and like every part of lace do what you enjoy and makes you
happy. I'll go now. Vivienne

What about cheating: use the sewing machine but with invisible thread?

The only disagreement I have is with the word 'cheating'. There are no rules
in Lace Making only tradition and personal preference. You should do
whatever you think is appropriate to you as a lacemaker. If you enjoy
lacemaking as
I do as a man but have great difficulty in sewing on a button I only care
that my lace is complete and on display. Some lacemakers need to decide what
is
more important, making lace or the importance of the method of sewing. If you
are really bothered then make lace that doesn't need any sewing of middles.

Thank you all who sent me get better wishes. I can't get to the main
computer but Iain has brought me the lap top. Those who are medically minded I
have
a Weber C fracture. To the rest of us I have dislocated my ankle, broken a
bone in it and in my leg. I had an op on Wednesday and next Wednesday I will
get
a new plaster. I will have the pins taken out at about 8 weeks. The worst
thing, other than the pain, is I am none weight bearing for 6 weeks! Iain has
offered me to various members of our family but they all have declined and
laughed hysterically. I am trying to be good but it is hard. I was so shocked
to
hear about Sandra and it makes me realise how lucky I am. Once again, thanks
to every one who sent good wishes, Vivienne/ Biggins/Presencia,
