[lace-chat] blonde on a plane

2005-01-20 Thread dominique
i can't remember whether i read it on chat or not so here goes
dominique from paris, France cold and windy today

The plane is on its way to Houston when a blonde in Economy Class gets up
and moves to the First Class section and sits down. The flight attendant
watches her do this and asks to see her ticket. She then tells the blonde
that she paid for Economy and that she will have to sit in the back. The
blonde replies: I'm blonde, I'm beautiful, I'm going to Houston, and I'm
staying right here!
The flight attendant goes to the cockpit and tells the Captain and Copilot
that there is a blonde bimbo sitting in First Class that belongs in Economy
and that she will not move back to her seat.
The Copilot goes back to the blonde and tries to explain that because she
only paid for Economy
she will have to leave First Class and return to her seat.
The blonde replies, I'm blonde, I'm beautiful, I'm going to Houston, and I
am going to sit right here.
The Copilot returns to the cockpit and tells the Captain that he should
have the police waiting when they land to arrest the blonde woman as she
won't listen to reason. The Captain says, You say she's blonde? I will
handle this. I'm married to a blonde. I speak blonde.
He goes back to the blonde, whispers in her ear, and she says, Oh, I'm
sorry, and she gets up and moves back to her seat in the Economy section.
The flight attendant and copilot are amazed and ask him what he said to
make her move without any fuss.
I told her, First Class isn't going to Houston
Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk. That will
teach you to keep your mouth shut. hemingway

i don't exactly know but it has something to with oak .. they like the
particular taste wine gets after staying in oak barels .. even when it's

all wine don't need that oak flavour ..

Actually what we call american tastes are Robert Parker tastes you

2004-12-05 Thread dominique
to continue about lace lamps . they're not a myth and here's what is said
on the website of the Le Puy lace center about what lace makers used to
need:

* une petite chaise basse à haut dossier : elle est souvent lÕoeuvre
du mari de la dentellière
a small high-backed low chair which was very often made by the lacemaker's
husband. Le Puy is a rural area in the center of France .

dÕeau qui diffusait et amplifiait la lumière de la lampe à huile sur le
carreau.
a three legged table on which stood a glass bowl filled with water which
diffused and amplified the light from an oil lamp onto the pillow

* une boîte à fuseaux : en bois souvent sculptée au couteau
a bobbin box often sculpted with a knife .

* une petite corbeille ronde pour contenir fils et ciseaux
a little round basket to put threads and scissors.

* une demi-aune : règle pour mesurer le travail en dentelle
a ruler to measure the length of the lace . the measure was not a meter but
an aune or a demi aune (half aune). some of the old ones as beautifully
sculpted ... and horribly expensive ...

* un plioir à dentelle en bois autour duquel on met la dentelle pour
quÕelle ne se froisse pas.
a lace folder : piece of wood , often beautifully sculpted, around which
you wound the finished lace to prevent it from getting soiled ...

Do you know the book of Mylène Salvador La dentelle de Bayeux ? A few
years ago I had the chance to take a class with her, a very good
 experience
 !
Bayeux lace is a form of Chantilly lace developped in Bayeux. The book
contains several beautiful patterns, it is edited by Didier Carpentier,
 ISBN
2-84167-081-3. I think it's still available and not too expensive :o))

i'm afraid you're mistaken there . Bayeux lace is different from Chantilly
if only because it's cotton while chantilly is grenadine black silk and it
uses both grids and cloth stitch while Chantilly only uses grids .

there is a lace, though, which was called Chantilly de Bayeux and was
developped in Bayeux by the Lefébure , a famous family of lace merchants.

Can't tell you much more . Haven't started Bayeux lace yet ...
Hey Sof where are you ? i'm sure you could tell a lot more

Which brought a question to my
 mind...

 1) US had been settled - mostly - by immigrants from England and
environs (now UK), who started pouring in, in mid 17th century,
fleeing religious persecution (how come nobody ever objects to
 *atheist* persecution, I wonder g)...

 2) The Christmas tree tradition was imported into England, from
Germany, after the marriage of Queen Victoria and Albert of Saxe-Coburg
(and Gotha g), some 200 yrs later (early/mid 19thc); before then,
England had a yule log (whatever that is g). By which time, US had
been well divorced from the mother country, through a couple of
 wars...

Tamara
aren't you forgetting the number of german immigrants who settled in the US
?

A different gathering entirely - an IOLI (I think) Convention somewhere
(I wasn't there)... The electricity failed, someone brought out a
*make-shift* lacemaker's lamp (a bowl filled with water, illuminated,
from behind, by a candle? flashlight?) and it worked just fine, if
 one's to believe the reports...

I tried a makeshift lace maker's lamp with a decanter filled with water
and a candle behind it : there was a square of somewhat flickering light
falling on the pillow and enabling one to work . i guess a bigger globe
would have given more light ...

and old photographs show stools with a candle in the middle and glass
globes full of water around it .. the stool had holes dug in it in which
the globes were set . .. and the lace makers were sitting around it.

just my two cents

Chantilly skirts and how many women worked on them

i was told it took ten lacemakers ten years to make one of those huge 19th
century chantilly shawls ... and each worked 10cmx20cm lengths that were
then put together with an invisible stitch by another specialised worker .
i saw all this very well explained in the Chantilly museum .

touch of nature needed to make work tolerable ) the note pad with its
gorgeous soft coloured frog , the pencil , the little book of calm

needed .. VBG) and the three skeins of cotton thread .(such pretty colours)

it seems i shouldn't have taken the parcel but sent it back to sender so

something had been stolen and she nearly accused me of cheating .. i came
out fuming ... but i live in a part of town where some people make a living
out of such things so . she wasn't entirely wrong ...

i have kept the envelope . if you need it just tell me and i'll post it

I was amused by the display of the lacy undies, mostly thong-type (page
3 of the first website). Remember the flap when the crocheters from
Koniakow first started making them a couple of years back?

well, we had to match the the thongs (called strings in french ... VBG)
with their names and it wasn't that easy but it was great fun !!
you can be sure some of them were uncomfortable : the one called black
magic had a wire surround! ! .. the one called the kiss of the spider
woman would have been superb for arachne ... it was a marvel of
craftsmanship ..

It was also interesting to observe the cultural difference between the
English and the French; in England, it's St Catherine who's the patron
saint of lacemakers, in France, it seems to be St Anne (mother of
Mary?) Who are patron saints of lacemakers in other countries?

there are differences in France even:

St Anne is the patron saint of Bailleul lace makers . St Regis is the
patron saint of Le Puy Lacemakers .
St Catherine is the patron saint of seamstresses .. and unmarried girls
who reach 25 wear a huge yellow and green hat made by their work pals ...
and some time ago , the phrase to don St Catherine meant you were
officially a spinster ... nice

 Groaners
 1. Two vultures board an airplane, each carrying two dead
raccoons. The stewardess looks at them and says, I'm sorry,
gentlemen, only one carrion allowed per passenger.

 2. Did you hear that NASA recently put a bunch of Holsteins
into low earth orbit? They called it the herd shot 'round the
 world.

 3. Two boll weevils grew up in South Carolina. One went to
Hollywood and became a famous actor. The other stayed behind in
the cotton fields and never amounted to much. The second one,
naturally, became known as the lesser of two weevils.

 4. Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly, but when they
lit a fire in the craft, it sank proving once again that you
can't have your kayak and heat it, too.

 5. A three legged dog walks into a saloon in the Old West.
He slides up to the bar and announces: I'm looking for the man
 who shot my paw.

 6. Did you hear about the Buddhist who refused Novocain
during a root canal? He wanted to transcend dental medication.

 7. A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and
were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament
victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the
office and asked them to disperse. But why? they asked, as they
moved off. Because, he said, I can't stand chess nuts boasting
 in an open foyer.

 8. A woman has twins, and gives them up for adoption. One of
them goes to a family in Egypt and is named Amal. The other
goes to a family in Spain; they name him Juan. Years later,
Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon
receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she
also had a picture of Amal. Her husband responds, They're twins!
If you've seen Juan, you've seen Amal.

 9. These friars were behind on their belfry payments, so
they opened up a small florist shop to raise funds. Since
everyone liked to buy flowers from the men of God, a rival
florist across town thought the competition was unfair. He asked
the good fathers to close down, but they would not. He went back
and begged the friars to close. They ignored him. So, the rival
florist hired Hugh MacTaggart, the roughest and most vicious thug
in town to persuade them to close. Hugh beat up the friars and
trashed their store, saying he'd be back if they didn't close up
shop. Terrified, they did so, thereby proving that: Hugh, and
only Hugh, can prevent florist friars.

 10. And finally, There was a man who sent ten different puns
to friends, in the hope that at least one of the puns would make
them laugh. Unfortunately, no pun in ten did.

En France, on parle des 9 vies du chat parfois mais plus rarement des 7

in France a cat has nine lives and sometimes but rarely seven.

nine lives maybe because the egyptians who worshipped cats thought they
lost a life each time they made their way out of an impossible situation.

En tout cas, 9 comme 7 c'est magique. 3 fois la trinité.

The nursery rhyme Ring Around the Rosey is a rhyme about
the plague. Infected people with the plague would get red
circular sores (Ring around the rosey), these sores would
smell very badly so common folks would put flowers on their
bodies somewhere (inconspicuously), so that it would cover
the smell of the sores (a pocket full of posies). Further-
more, people who died from the plague would be burned so as
to reduce the possible spread of the disease (ashes, ashes,
  we all fall down).

2004-02-23 Thread dominique
enjoy !

dominique from paris ...

Patrick O'Reilly was lucky.

Since the day he had found that four leaf clover, everything good
seemed to come his way.

He had met the wonderful Rosie, and after a whirlwind romance, they
were married. And now, a year later, he was the proud father of
beautiful twins, a boy and a girl.

At work, the story was the same. He had been promoted and had
received a substantial raise, and now the firm had come up with a
profit sharing plan.

Patty was certain his good fortune was due to his 4-leaf clover.

Everywhere he went, he was certain to be carrying the talisman in
his suit pocket.

One morning, Patty could not find the clover.

He searched the house, but it was not there. In panic, he tried to
recall when he had last seen it.

He finally recalled it was in his gray suit that he had dropped off
at the dry cleaners.

He rushed to the cleaners only to find that the work had been
completed and his suit was ready to be picked up. He searched the
suit and found the 4-leaf clover, still in one piece but now
flattened from the dry cleaning.

From that day on, Patty's fortunes changed.

Life was good but was no longer perfect.

The little inconveniences were always there.

He had a flat tire as he was driving to an important meeting.

The twins developed measles when his boss and his wife were over for
dinner.

No, Patty's life had changed.

He still carried the amulet, but he was certainly not living under
the silver lining he was used to and had come to expect.

Finally, he had had enough. He visited the parish priest to see if
he could help him understand what had happened.

This certainly was to be expected, he was told. You should have
known ... One should never press one's luck. (By Stan Kegel)

  Gentle Spiders,

The last week or so, I've been corresponding with several
 BL novices
on the finer points of Torchon bookmarks (I have the book
 in which the
bookmarks were published, so could check what they were
 talking about).
Three of them (the novices) mentioned -- as if it were a
 dirty secret
-- a *general* problem or two they were having (not the
 same ones). I
couldn't begin to understand why they thought those
 problems were
something to be ashamed of; when I was starting, the
 overload of info
was overwhelming -- *everything* was new, and everything
 had to be
memorised before the fingers (skills) took over... Up a
 creek without
a paddle is where I felt I was (of course, that was '89,
 I had only
one book, with outdated info re: suppliers, and no Arachne
 in sight
  g).

So, as I was writing back, I kept thinking: been there,
 done that...
And then realised that, no, I did *not* have a T-shirt to
 prove it; I
have several lacemaking T-shirts, but not *that* one.

I'd love to have a T-shirt (either short or long-sleeved)
 which said
been there, done that... Ooops and then showed some lace
 (Torchon?)
with common oopsies... My personal favourite would be
 the messed-up
footside -- pin under 2 instead of under 4 for just one
 pin -- that's
one that still happens to me sometimes (in Milanese). But
 I'm sure
there are other lovely ones worth commemorating... :)
[EMAIL PROTECTED] at the bottom optional...

Non-BL-ers wouldn't understand it, but then they don't
 understand the
straight ones, either. For *us*, however... On the one
 hand, it's a
statement of improvement (been there, done that, but am
 not doing it
anymore). On the other hand, it'd be reassuring (I should
 think) to
novices to know that *everyone* had, at some point, worn
 the lace
diapers but did manage to get toilet trained in the
 end...

If y'all think the idea is worth pursuing, and if there's
 someone among
us who'd be willing to get such a T-shirt organised, I'd
 volunteer to
make the oops-y lace for it *After* New Year's g)
 Provided, of
course, other people on the list were willing to share
 their particular
bugaboos (a pine-cone tally among a cluster of perfect
 ones?) overcome
  or not...

I've had a couple of pairs of red shoes in my life - I *like* red shoes!

so do I !! i've had a few of all shapes and styles . i must say i loved my
red stylettos with black trimmings which my knees and feet wouldn't accept
at all today ... lol .. and i also cherished a pair of red shoes that gave
me feet a bit like Minnie's or some walt disney characters ... oh well ..

i like being dressed in dark colours with red shoes as the only bright part
of me ... (pun intended ... or at least i thought there was one ... )

a secret pal from Australia ! .. swell i nearly lost the pewter
frog that was cheeky enough to jump out of the bag with paper and all ... i
love it !!! i guess i had that particularly idiotic grin one has when
really absolutely delighted ... .. I put it near my turtle made from a
Mexican seed (offered by another SP and much treasured ) .the bandana
is beautiful and the fact it is to help teens with cancer makes it even
more precious , the cards are oh so pretty and the exlibris etiquettes are
just what i needed for my lace books .. i'll keep a few of them to show
my lace friends of course

dominique who's impatiently waiting for next month ...

argh!! forgot the Santa ...much appreciated too . you didn't know i had a
Santa collection too did you ??? you must be a psychic somehow.. i
started buying Santa candles and stopped when they all started to look the
same in all the shops. i just love those that look chinese .. lol ..
something in the eyes ... i checked and they were indeed made in China ..

it was great fun opening these nice little elf coloured green parcels ...
i still can't get over the fact there is english lavender lol i
had always thought lavender was only grown in the South of Europe !! the
smell is gorgeous and as i intended to buy shower gel it couldn't be better
timed.
By the way china tea with lavender tastes real nice . i'd never have
thought of mixing tea and lavender .. not creative enough when it comes to
tea i guess lol ...
the bobbin is precious and so delicate and the thread cutter came as a real
surprise . my lace pals were much interested . i proudly wore the pin to go
to my lace lessons and the photo frame is gorgeous ...

i am delighted !!! thank you again

 Maxine,

You are not doing the true lacemaker process - you go out and buy one
 pillow
of every type you can and start a piece of lace on all of them and then
 do a
little on each pillow in rotation until you realise that you have no spare
pillow or spare bobbins which means that you have to go out and buy more.

all this said with tongue firmly in cheek i presume :-)))
it's true i, too , have several pillows and have had three or four projects
waiting .but i've come to the conclusion that starting more than two
projects at the same time is bad for the threads : they wait for such a
long time they become snappy ...
so this summer : a wedding garter and later on probably the collar from
Retournac museum that was in the pack they've just issued ... but will
have to try and do it with thinner thread . 18/2 linen is really too thick
.
