Today I don't think Wednesday pressed as much at all and especially not our
goalie when we had the ball. They were letting us play out. It really was that
first goal we crumbled and they started playing like Barcelona.
Disagree a bit with Rich, Bannon has always looked a player to me.

It's hard to disagree with Pontus's remarks in the Guardian - we were
out-muscled in midfield. Can't see how Vieira didn't get a chance ahead of
Phillips - yes, Phillips started the season better than expected, but he wasn't
the player to anchor a midfield away to a local rival.
Also, teams seem to have caught on to the fact that we will always try to play
the ball square for someone else to take it on, like we're a sodding rugby
league team or something, so if they press us we're screwed. But I'm going to
lay most of the blame on Weidwald, whose awful 'keeping allowed the first goal
and then unnerved the defence.

Clearly Christiansen needs to make some changes to the starting eleven. I'd say
Lonergan in for Wiedwald and Vieira in for Phillips, O'Kane or Alioski are
obvious ones. But I think he should also think about whether we should go 4-4-2
with Roofe, Grot or Cibicki playing number 10 to Lasogga's number 9 up front.
In that case we could have a central midfield pairing of O'Kane and Vieira with
two from Saiz/Hernandez/Dallas/Alioski on the wings. Perhaps we could even go
3-5-2, with Ayling, Jansson and Pennington or Cooper at the back, then a
central midfield trio of Vieira, O'Lane and Phillips, plus two wingers and two
of the above-mentioned forwards.
Another thought: we clearly lack height in central midfield. Shaughnessy is a
converted midfielder who has an eye for a pass. Is it time to experiment with
him playing alongside Vieira there?

agreed, however I do think that the honeymoon period is over and I think there
are a few fundamentals that we need to look at.
I thought we were rubbish today and when we're making Barry Bannan look like
Messi due to giving him all the space in the world I think it's worrying.
The tactics are suspect, with Lasogga just isolated on his own and in midfield
our 2 battlers Philips and O'Kane showed what they are - very basic ,
pedestrian footballers. The worst thing that Phillips could have done this
season is score some goals because I actually think his performances haven't
been good. As for O'Kane, I've never rated him and at best I think he's an
average , no frills , 10 yard ball man. Together they are not going to take us
where we want to be.
I think the keeper, who actually saved us from a real spanking is not a
championship keeper i.e. someone who can control his box.
We are not good enough to play tippy tappy football at the back. Look at their
3rd, and O'Kane trying to play a little chip from inside his box. Madness and I
think this is direction from the management in that we should be looking to
play football with every pass but we need players who can pass - some of our
players find that difficult.
Very frustating and totally ruined my weekend but I think the worst thing is I
think the bubble has burst and the optimism gone. All our wins have come
against the shite teams.

That's an over-reaction.
It's hard to disagree with Pontus's remarks in the Guardian - we were
out-muscled in midfield. Can't see how Vieira didn't get a chance ahead of
Phillips - yes, Phillips started the season better than expected, but he
wasn't the player to anchor a midfield away to a local rival.
Also, teams seem to have caught on to the fact that we will *always* try to
play the ball square for someone else to take it on, like we're a sodding
rugby league team or something, so if they press us we're screwed. But I'm
going to lay most of the blame on Weidwald, whose awful 'keeping allowed
the first goal and then unnerved the defence.
