Hello

Does the Ibid. (repeats what is listed in the previous citations) work
OK in reports?

I am trying to create an Ancestor book report for an ancestor and
notice that the sources at the end of this report are mostly of the
same source so it is repeating itself many times.

As I have already checked Ibid in
Options/Customise/Sources, it doesn't look that it is working in the
report function.

I have just been checking the archives for this user group but cannot
see any recent posts . Can anyone confirm this?

Many thanks,

The backup reminder will only show if there has been a change in the database.
If you simply open a database and then exit, no change has happened, so no
prompt to backup.  If you want to make it backup, change some field in a
record, then change it back, then exit.

I know you can do them by tagging and combining separate searches but,

 1.  The ability to say Ignore people who have a specific event on the
specified date.  Ideally, have a list of event names which should cause
the exclusion.  I have an event Census, but some folk may have
individual events for different parts of the same census (England
 Census, Wales Census etc.)

 2.  The ability to limit the people to be included by: Only those tagged
on tag x, Only direct-line ancestors, Only blood relations, etc.  Each
of these should have a Plus spouses option.

It used to take me about 6 separate searches to do what this tool does,
so that's great.  As a first draft, it is brilliant.

 Geoff - awesome webinar today!
I have a suggestion for the census list tool, but will submit it the
normal route (expanding its capabilities beyond censuses).

I also would like to suggest making the exclude people who have a 1940
census event already an OPTION.  Here's where I'm coming from:

I used Steve Morse's tool to find the ED for my dad's family home on the
south side of Chicago (Google even had a current picture of the front of the
house!), so I have the Series, Roll, ED, description for my dad's family
NOW.  I want to record that somewhere.  I know toward the end of QA you
were adding To-Do items, but that seems an extra step to me.  I would like
to add the Census record now with just the information I have, then flesh it
out when the images are available next month and I view them.  (Does this
 make sense?)

Anyway, with the enhancement you described (you showed us an email you had
received from one of the programmers), these people would be excluded.
However, I would still want them to show up on the Census List Report...
the one I'm going to print to use when looking at the images.  (rather than
a separate to-do list, because face it the new report is much better)

And although this tool within Legacy is slick, I was more impressed with
the find the ED tool you showed us (having browsed the 1930 census, I
know it is tedious)... and I already have a very similar tool that one of
the LUG subscribers had developed a while back that does much the same thing
(but without the ability to tag results... just output).

 Thanks again,

I will look for that for you but I'm pretty sure everyone had to create a new

our User sign ons to multiple areas of the LDS.org site, etc. so we use one
sign on for multiple things. I will see if I can find what you are referring

someone on here who is a volunteer with NFS customer service; those people know
a LOT :-)

You are right that activating Legacy's LFS features right now won't do you much

information, combine duplicates, etc.

I'll post here if I find that info for you :-) Kathy

Hi David,

Yes, I was trying to log into NEW.familysearch.org and could not. You need, for
lack of a better term, an 'upgrade' of your existing account to do so.

If you go to the link they gave me, about halfway down there is a 'Click Here
to open the registration page' When you go to that screen, in the upper left,
since you already have an existing account, you sign in with that account. That
starts the process of requesting access for your existing account to
new.familysearch.org.

That also lets you login in Legacy Family Search.

ALL screen fonts. As I subsequently reported the only way to get them to
stick is to select Stretch fonts when resizing and then set the minimum to
the smallest size I selected and maximum to the largest size I selected. I
have never messed with the minimum and maximum font choices previously and
used the default. I sure don't want to change them every time I change
fonts.

I have Verdana 10 set for data, Verdana 11 for labels, and Verdana 10 for
notes. I have the minimum font set at 10 and the maximum at 11. No problem
here. However, if I change the min font size to 6 all three (data, labels,
and notes) have now reverted to 6.

As stated previously there is no problem with the report fonts sticking.

[LegacyUG] Can't use main window with open dialog box

2012-03-10 Thread Ward Webber
I've used Legacy happily for about 5 years, but always find one of its
characteristics to be really inconvenient: Unlike many other applications I
use, Legacy dialog boxes are modal; i.e., they temporarily halt the
program, and the user cannot continue until the dialog has been closed.
This means, for example, when a search list is created it can't be parked
at the side of the screen and referred to while work is done in the parent
window. And if filling in a modal dialog requires access to the parent
window, you must close the dialog, find the information in the parent
window, and then open the dialog again. Modal dialogs show information in a
series (one lot of information at a time) and not in parallel (all the
information you need to see at once). Parallel allow the user to choose
what to look at, but in serial you are pretty much forcing him or her to
pick an option.

Obviously some kinds of dialogs must be modal, such as selecting a file to
open or warnings such as confirming a deletion. My understanding is that
modals are also easier to program, because the programmer doesn't have to
be concerned whether making decisions in multiple screens could cause
conflicts. But there are ways around this.

I couldn't find references to this issue in the forum archives; does anyone
know whether there's a good reason for using modal dialogs so often?

[LegacyUG] To-do clipboard

2012-03-10 Thread Paula Ryburn
Tried to find the thread in the archives from the other day where someone asked
about adding a to-do item to many individuals at once. Could not find it. So,
I'll just write this now even if it was already covered.

I just discovered the copy paste icons on the to-do list window. Doesn't
add the to-do item to all individuals in (say) a search list, but it does make
the adding it to each person go a bit more quickly. (esp. if you have tagged
them)

RE: [LegacyUG] census event

2012-03-10 Thread Mary Moyer
Michele

I used to use the official date, but I found a lot of families who were
enumerated twice, so I started keeping track with the date it was taken. Even
though the enumerators were supposed to get the information as of the official
date, I find that the information is often as of the date the census was taken.
It's easy to find out the official date but not so easy to find the date taken
without looking at the actual page.

That is what I have always done too but in the last webinar that Geoff did (the
new census tool), he put the official date in as the date for the census event.

could you tag the folks who you have added this information already
and then perform your search to exclude them (in searches you have
that ability). Just a quick thought.

[LegacyUG] probate index

2012-03-10 Thread Tony Rolfe
I'm not sure how to record this (or indeed, whether to bother), and am
looking for advice.

The UK Index of wills and probate says something like Fred Smith of
{address} died on {date}, probate {date} to George Smith and Mary Jones,
effects {amount}

Recording the probate for Fred is straightforward, but what should I
record for George and Mary? It usually gives their occupation, but are
these the executors, necessarily? Is it worth recording that George and
Mary were executors of Fred's estate?

What do other folk do?

Advice would be appreciated

Thanks, Tony

Paula, Try signing into http://new.familysearch.org and see if you can get into
that yet or not. That is the one we are wondering about; it's the one that
syncs with the LFS function in Legacy Family Tree.
And thanks for the reminder about getting ready for indexing; we should all be
doing that; even if every person did one page, which would probably take maybe
20 minutes, it would make such a difference in how quickly the index is
completed and then posted for everyone. Every bit helps; you don't have to
commit to a certain amount of time, just what you feel like you can do. But
Beware! Indexing census records can be highly addictive ;-)

Re: [LegacyUG] Ibid. in reports

2012-03-10 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Jemima, Marianne, and Bob:

Identical source citations should not repeat in reports. There are certain
conditions that will cause them to do that but these can be corrected. To
get help from the LUG list you need to identify the specific report you're
generating, whether the repetition is in footnotes, endnotes or
bibliography, the format you're producing (RTF, HTML, or in the Preview).
If you'll be very thorough in posting the description of your condition
someone will surely be able to solve the problem.

Hello

Does the Ibid. (repeats what is listed in the
previous citations) work OK in reports?

I am trying to create an Ancestor book report for
an ancestor and notice that the sources at the end
of this report are mostly of the same source so it
is repeating itself many times.

As I have already checked Ibid in

is working in the report function.

I have just been checking the archives for this

anyone confirm this?

Many thanks,

RE: [LegacyUG] probate index

2012-03-10 Thread Jan Roberts
I have found several probate records in UK too, and the wording of the actual
entry seems to differ i.e. I haven't found that there is a set wording. My
probate event sentence reads [HeShe] had an estate probated [Desc] [onDate]
[inPlace].[Sources] [Notes] In the Description I put to Bill Blogs and Jane
Smith.
That way the names are recorded, but I do not have to add them to my database
unless there is also information that they are related some way. For instance
it will usually state if the Executrix is the widow of the deceased. Sometimes
the people are identified as being Executors, but I have also found an example
where I presume there was no actual will because it says Adminstration to - in
that case I still used the same sentence definition. The exact text of the
record goes into the Notes. The wording of the record goes into source
details. I also use Snipping Tool in Windows to take a PNG image of the actual
record so I don't get all the other entries on the page.

Cheers
