Re: [LegacyUG] Samsung Android and Legacy
Hi June, Legacy only runs in Windows (an operating system). Your Samsung device is running Android (a different operating system), so no you can't install Legacy there. Take a look at 'Families' - it is designed to work with your Legacy file on your Android device. I've been using it today, as it happens, to look up information while at a family wedding. http://www.telgen.co.uk/families/index.html Hope this helps. :-) Wendy June Chan said the following on 22/03/2014 6:38 p.m.: Is it possible to put Legacy on a Samsung 10.1 android. [LegacyUG] Name display
Hi, I have a question about displaying names in Legacy. For some time I have been trying to find a way to convince the program to display names in the following format: Surname Firstnames (ex. Johnson John) in the family view and in what's more important, in reports. This may not make much sense to most of you, but this is quite important for me, because in some languages, such as Hungarian, names are correctly written as I mentioned above. After generating a report in English I can easily translate the reports into Hungarian using MSWord's SearchReplace option, but I haven't yet found a way to change the order of the names. Any idea would be most welcome, Thousand thanks in advance: Nagy-Vajda Domokos, Jogosított / hiteles fordítás- Traduceri autorizate/legalizate - Certified translations nagyd...@yahoo.com domo...@nagy-vajda.eu +40265337139 +40740677056 Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). Re: [LegacyUG] Name display
I don't think this need has been thought about for reports or Family View. Perhaps none of the languages so far used require it. You can't do it for display on Family View. You can do it for display on Index View and the Name List by having the cursor in the Surname search field. You can do it in Index View and Descendant View and the Child Grid in Family View as you can set up the columns so that the Surname comes before the Given Name. You can set up your Event Sentence Definitions so that the Surname comes before the Given Name when the name is used. You have to edit each sentence using the codes to do that. You must be using very basic reports if you can translate from English to Hungarian using search and replace so you're probably not using Event Sentences. I think you need to put in an enhancement request to include on the Format Tab for reports the option to put Surname before Given Names. I have no problems using the program, just saving it. If you use Legacy to restore the family file, you will see that it expects to open a Legacy ZIP file. Outwardly, this is no different to any other ZIP file but the program expects to open a ZIP file created by the Legacy Backup process. As I would have made sure if I'd programmed the restore, the program refuses to process a ZIP file that doesn't contain a Family File. So this prevents you from doing anything really stupid. The restore process will unzip the ZIP file, placing the files contained therein in the default data folder. You will be given a chance to stop the process if it would overwrite an existing file(s). You can also change the name of the Family File or relocate it if you so wish. As for any Media file backup - you're basically on your own. Usually not a problem if you restore the backup to the machine it was taken from. If the backup is restored on another machine, the structure of your Media folders should match the original machine, since that structure is recorded in the Media backup. You can use Windows Explorer to unzip the Media Backup. -- Regards, Mike Fry Johannesburg (g) Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). When I view a person in any view I want to know at least two pieces of information. I want to know where they were born and where their heimat is. So how do I get the heimat to appear with every person. A heimat is not an event. It is the ancestral home or place where a families records are kept even though they may not have lived there for generations. Swiss genealogies are a mess because no distinction has been made between the two. The standards of the past has been to record the heimat as the birthplace. Don, I may not understand what and where you want to see a heimat, but I would put it in events even if it is not an event. If it was put in the birthplace field in the past, it could be added as an alternate birthplace, such as Ellsworth-Heimat, Antrim, Michigan, USA. Hope you find a simple and useful solution for you and your relatives. Re: [LegacyUG] copy file from one computer to another
I recommend you have your legacy files back up into Dropbox (free). That way, you can access identical info on both of your computers. BTW, it's possible to connect a large screen and keyboard to a laptop and use it as a desktop as well. That way, it's possible to keep everything in one place. RE: [LegacyUG] Cause of Death
Is it just the data that is not showing, or do you not even have the labels/fields for it on your family view? The data must be entered in the Primary and/or Secondary Cause of Death Fields on the Medical tab of the Individual’s Notes window. It sounds like you did this. Family View allows the display of 5 data items. Birth, Baptism/Christening, Death, and Burial are normally the first 4. I think the last one by default is Cause of Death, but in any case this is probably the one you want to change to Cause of Death. Click on the Label and you get the customize window. Click on the … button for the line you want Cause of Death to appear on (presumably the 5th line) and select Cause of Death from the drop down menu. You can then customize the labels if you want. Re: [LegacyUG] Cause of Death
You cannot customize what you see in the person's information screen. That is a data entry screen and all the fields on it are fixed. You enter the cause of death on the Medical Notes and you can have that as a custom screen in the Family View and on the Details tab of the Name List and Search results lists. The notes are available from the individual information form using the notes icon so you can access the cause of death from there. To customize the view on the name list right click on the labels of the details tab just as you do for the custom family view. Re: [LegacyUG] Switzerland research
Hi Don, Think about where you want to see this information - is it every time you see a mention of someone born in Switzerland, or just in reports, or something else? You don't actually say, so we're all left guessing about your intentions. This really is no different to any other piece of information that you'd find about any person anywhere in the world - think about the structure and how you want to use it, and then a solution that fits your needs can be found. Any mess is the responsibility of the person creating it. ;-) Do you use the Title Suffix field at all? I'm thinking if you wanted to see this piece of information each and every time you view anything about a Swiss person, you could put it in that field. Perhaps format it in a particular way so that it is distinguished from other uses of the field (say, use brackets of some kind - there are three on your keyboard: (), [], {}.). Or you could create an event called Heimat, where the only field used is the Place (Location) - which would then put the heimat names into your Locations, and you'd only have to enter each one once. The downside could be that the heimat name would be entered into your Locations, which may not suit you (I have no idea what form these names take, so am guessing here). You can then structure the Event Sentence to read however you want it to. These are just two options that occur to me as I read your post. Legacy is a flexible program and I'm sure more could be found if there was more information about how the data might be used and other minds put to the task. Hope this helps. :-) Wendy Don Jaggi said the following on 23/03/2014 4:11 a.m.: When I view a person in any view I want to know at least two pieces of information. I run the software each day and from time to time I get the check for updates message under the version number but clicking it has no effect and it switches back to insisting I have the latest version. The downside could be that the heimat name would be entered into your Locations, which may not suit you (I have no idea what form these names take, so am guessing here). You can then structure the Event Sentence to read however you want it to. And the proposed Heimat event can be made to display on the Family View. Click on any one of the 5 main labels (Born, Bapt Died etc) and on the resulting window configure a label to be Event You're then asked to select a event type from the Master List: select Heimat. Not within a file. If you want to see the default events create a New Empty file and examine the Master Event Definitions in that. That will only show you the default events and their event roles. If you have customized the roles for default events then you will have to check all the default event definitions in your file to see if they are changed. I haven't tried this, but how about a common prefix on the Event name? Like uNewEvent1, uNewEvent2, etc. It is often useful when working with others to be able to distinguish changes to the original package. Joan, What version of legacy are you using? Version 7 or the new version 8. What steps did you follow when you were doing back ups? Joan, I have only V7 so this is how I could do a backup in two ways: 1. Using the menu option across the top of the screen File | Backup File Do you remember if you had Data Files selected and do you know which drive it save to (you mentioned a CD - is this your backup or the Legacy-purchased installation CD?) 2. RE: [LegacyUG] queston re: RIN numbers number of individuals
Hello Laird I have successfully downloaded the latest version of Legacy7.5 and that seemed to fix the problem. Number of individuals now equals the highest RIN. Thank you! You may want to go to HelpGeneral Information and write down your Cust. Num: before you download/install the latest available version 7.50.278. You might also need to backup all of your settings contained in the .usr files. Go to help and search for user files http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/helpDownloadVersion7.asp#Vista http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/helpDownloadVersion7.asp Laird On 3/14/2014 11:50 AM, Norma wrote: I tried as you suggested by running File Maintenance/Check repair and immediately got an error 3022 message and wouldn't continue until I solved error 3022. When I go to the Legacy error board it tells me to update my Legacy to the latest version 7.5.0.278 (I am currently on 7.5.0.112). Instructions for doing this suggest I review guidelines at: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/helpWindows7andVista.asp before downloading onto Windows 7 PC. But then when I click on this link I get an server error message 404: file or directory not found Error 3022 seems to refer to an issue in the marriage files so perhaps that is where my extra person is hiding w/o his/her RIN but I have no idea how to find him/her. An individual should have only one RIN whether she never married or married multiple times. The total number of individuals is derived from “general information’ under the help tab. I have 3 other family files: one is over 10,000 people, another over 5000 and a very small one of only 56 people. I’ve checked all 3 files and the 2 largest do not correspond either, but people have been merged deleted in both files, so I’m not surprised. The very small file of 56 people is correct in that the total number of people corresponds to the largest RIN. The file seems to be working correctly so maybe I’m obsessing over nothing, but I’d still like to have the numbers correspond. I do have a lot of unused RINs so my highest RIN is 18,843, 76 higher. Of course I have the reverse of you. I don't see how you can have more people than RINs. In the name list, click the # button at the top left of window to sort the list and then scroll down to the bottom of the list and verify the highest RIN is lower than the other counts. [LegacyUG] downloading version 7.5
Hello all I am working on my sister-in-law's family and would like to be able to send her a GEDCOM of what I have found thus far. I am using the Legacy 7.5.0.278 and she doesn't have any genealogy software on her computer. Can she go to the Legacy website where it says one can download earlier versions, download the standard version of Legacy 7.5? (or better yet, the deluxe version?) Re: [LegacyUG] downloading version 7.5
Have her download the 7.5.0.278 version and send her a Legacy file as opposed to GEDCOM. A Legacy backup file would be best: Menu: FileBackup Family File. This will create a ZIPPED file and will be smaller and have all the Legacy files that go with the file you are working on. The filename will be the same as the Family filename plus the date and time will be part of the name and will have an extension of .zip.
