Re: [LegacyUG] Question regarding finding undefined event roles

2022-05-26 Thread Alan Thompson
One way you could do this (perhaps it's the only way) is to use Microsoft
Access to query your legacy family file database to find those records in the
tblEX Events table that have a value in the IDRO field that does not match an
existing IDRO value in the tblRO table (this is effectively the Master list of
Event Roles).

It would seem that the relevant role records were somehow deleted from the
tblRO table.

OK, need to clarify, since this answer doesn't address my question (I provided
too much context!):

Performing a File Clean/Repair reports this:
"There are Event record(s) that reference a Role that does not exist:"

Now, how do I find the Event Roles that do not exist? This is my main question
for the post here.

My mentioning of Shared Events is just a red herring, I can create, edit,
delete event roles perfectly, and attach them to primary event's and shared
events with equal gusto.

I just need some help to FIND Event Roles that are attached to Events that do
not exist in the Event Role list (as reported by the Clean/Repair report) .

Help! and Thanks !

Re: [LegacyUG] List of ALL Sources for 1 individual

Possibly the Individual Chart Report will meet your needs. (Menu: Reports/Chart
Reports/Individual… ) Make sure you include everything about the individual in
the Report Options, including checking the Print Source citations under the
Sources tab. The report is only available in pdf format but since you indicated
that you wanted to print it out onto a sheet of paper, this should be enough.

Is there a way to List all of the Sources used in researching one individual?
If so, please explain in baby steps. I just want a list of the sources for all
of the information for my research of one individual on one sheet of paper.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Change to Ancestor Book Report

Am I missing something or has there been a design change to the
format/layout of the Ancestor Book Report with the latest update (12 July
2021 - Version 9.0.0.393) of Legacy Family Tree?

Prior to the update, when I ran the report, by default, it would identify
the parents of each individual in the report as per the following example

1. Doris Isabel Scrambler, daughter of Robert James Scrambler and
Isabella Jane Burton, was born in 1901 in Nine Mile Creek, Victoria,
Australia and died on 28 May 1975.

After the update, the report no longer includes the parents as follows:

1. Doris Isabel Scrambler was born in 1901 in Nine Mile Creek,
Victoria, Australia and died on 28 May 1975.

I can find no check box option to switch between these two formats so it
seems to me this change has been hard-coded into the report design. However,
I can find nothing in the Revision History to indicate such a change as part
of the latest build.

My preference would be to switch it back to the way it was, or at least
provide the user with option of which format they wish to use.

[LegacyUG] Managing Pictures and Photos in Legacy

2021-01-04 Thread Alan Thompson
Over the years I have linked many thousands of digitised photos to
individuals, events, and sources in Legacy and entered a separate Caption,
Date, Description and File ID for each photo, which is stored in the Legacy
database. This approach works well as long as the photos are linked to
Legacy but when the photos are separated from Legacy the information will be
lost.

Accordingly, I now wish to transfer this Caption, Date, Description and File
ID information into the actual photo itself as part of each photo file´s
metadata and I was wondering if any legacy user or users know of a way to do
this without having to update the metadata of each file one by one (which
would be a very long and tedious process), for example, by using some
software that can perform this task as a batch process. It is no trouble for
me to extract the data from Legacy into a csv or txt file but so far I have
been unable to identify any photo or file management program that is able to
update file metadata by batch processing a csv or txt file or similar.

Hoping someone has a solution.

If you want a way, if you submit a feature request it may be considered.
Include why it would be helpful to have the rebuild optionally delayed. See the

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy not working after windows 10 updates

2019-12-05 Thread Alan Thompson
I have been having very similar problems (I reported on them to this group 8
weeks ago)

My family file is just over 800MB and contains:

Number of Individuals: 144067
Number of Families: 44941
Master locations: 20761
Master Sources: 1245
Citations: 759965
Master events: 197212
used by individuals: 196591
used by marriages: 621
Master media items: 73894
times linked: 303918

With the latest upgrade of Windows 10 and Legacy 9, on my PC (8GB of RAM),
Legacy runs much slower than it used to and I get a “ Run Time Error ‘3035
System resource exceeded “ messages ALWAYS during Check-Repair and OFTEN when
running multi-Condition search queries. While running Check Repair, Task
manager indicates that my computers resources are being used at nowhere near
full capacity, with or without all other non-essential programs closed and
Security software disabled.

In Windows SAFE mode, Check Repair and the multi-Condition search queries
always complete successfully, but Legacy still runs much slower than it used to.

With the latest upgrade of Windows 10 and Legacy 9, on my Laptop (with less
resources, ie CPU and Memory), Check Repair and the multi-Condition search
queries always complete successfully, but Legacy still runs much slower than it
used to (eg check repair took 30 minutes, it used to take 3-4 minutes)

Tested going back to earlier versions of Legacy - made no difference.

Sent my full family file to Legacy support - Check Repair completed perfectly
in about 3-4 minutes (They tested with the latest build of Windows 10). They
said that other users had reported the same problem, but in no case had they
been able to replicate the problem on their computers. Legacy Support stated
that they believe that the problem is most likely a conflict with another
program.

I also tried exporting my family file to a new Legacy database and running
Check-Repair on that, again without success.

If I remove all source and media link records from my file (and compact my
file), it reduces the file size to 200MB, but Check Repair still crashes at the
same point. So, it looks like size of the family file alone, number of media
links or number of sources, are not critical.

If I export a subset of about 50,000 persons from my tree to a new tree, then
compact the new file, Check Repair and the multi-Condition search queries
USUALLY complete successfully, but Legacy still runs much slower than it used
to. This suggests to me that the number of persons in the tree may be a factor,
but clearly not the only one.

It's hard to enjoy using Legacy under these conditions 

Thank you very much! My file is about 625 MB, so it's not over 1 GB.

I'm starting to catch on that this problem is maybe not so unexpected now, even
for a file somewhat smaller than a gigabyte in size.

It would be nice to know if more can be found about this issue. The Legacy

[LegacyUG] Error 3035 during Check-Repair Build 9.0.0.318

2019-10-07 Thread Alan Thompson
Has anyone else had problems with the Check-Repair routine using the latest
release Legacy 9.0 Build 318.

I repeatedly get a " Run Time Error '3035 System resource exceeded "message
at Step 65 of 219 of Check-Repair and was wondering if anyone else was
experiencing similar.

I tried uninstalling Legacy and re-installing (as recommended for this error
message) and running check-repair on the same Family file but again received
the same error message.

I also tried exporting my family file to a new Legacy database and running
Check-Repair on that, again without success.

However, on a different computer (with less resources, ie CPU and Memory,
but with the same version of Windows 10 with latest updates), I ran
check-repair using Legacy Version 9.0.0.301 (ie the previous release) on the
same family files (as above) and check-repair completed successfully in both
cases.

Also restored a back-up of my family file taken immediately prior to
updating to Build 9.0.0.318. Running check repair on this file using Version
9.0.0.318 again failed at the same point, but successfully completed using
9.0.0.301.

My Family File details:

Number of Individuals: 143931

Number of Families: 44941

Master locations: 20761

Master Sources: 1245

Citations: 759965

Master events: 197212

used by individuals: 196591

used by marriages: 621

Master media items: 73894

times linked: 303918

I have reported this problem to support.

Yes, I have followed all those steps. The only difference it makes is that
initially the records processed counter gets a little bit further (ie another
5-10,000 records) before the overflow occurs.

It’s no big deal since I can create my own MSAccess query whenever I need to
generate the media records information I need. For the present, I’d rather
Legacy’s programmer resources were allocated and dedicated to getting the big
ticket items resolved, eg Mapping or (in the case of my submitted problem)
Merging using Drag and Drop. But I’ll happily submit a problem report if
someone can guarantee that this problem will be given the very lowest priority 

files you want to include and click on the "Print Media File List" button.

That list is easily readable - gedcoms are gobeddly gook to most people!

[LegacyUG] Problems with Manual Merge in Legacy 9

2017-08-24 Thread Alan Thompson
I am encountering problems with Merging trees in Legacy 9.0.0.189 (Latest
Build) from one Legacy Tree into another using drag and drop in split screen
view and was wondering if it was a known problem or if anyone else is
experiencing the same problem.

The problem happens when I drag an individual (who has a wife and children
records linked) from the source file onto the matching individual in the
destination file (who does not yet have any wife and children records
linked). The wife and children are being successfully transferred to the
destination file but the children are not being displayed under the parents
in Family View because, it seems, the merge process has failed to create a
child link in the parents' marriage record for each child. This becomes
apparent when Check/Repair is run after completing the Merge routine, when a
the following message is displayed:

Check/Repair of Legacy Family File:
C:\Users\Acer\Documents\Family\LegacyData\Family.fdb

Date: 08-25-2017

Please check this file very carefully.

It's a good idea to run another Check/Repair after you verify the items in
this file.

==

There are 1 Individual record(s) that point to parents but are missing a
Child Link:

==

Individual: RIN 107956, Parents' MRIN: 33962, Fixed the
Child Link.

Note (1): (IMPORTANT) this only seems to be a problem when the parent's
marriage record is blank in the Source file.

Note (2): This problem occurs for all families included in the merge
criteria where the marriage record is blank.

Note (2): this problem never occurred for me in earlier versions of Legacy.

I am also reporting this problem to support.

Thanks for your time

[LegacyUG] Entering Irish Census data into Legacy 9

2017-05-18 Thread Alan Thompson
I am about to get serious about entering Irish Census data against
individuals into Legacy 9 and was seeking guidance and or alternate views
about the best way to structure the entry of this data.

Up until now I have simply recorded a single "Residence" event for 1901 or
1911 as applicable for each individual and recorded the information about
them extracted from the "Household Return (Form A)" page into the Notes
field for the Event record. So far I have been undecided about what to Enter
in the Description field so currently I have been leaving that blank.

Now I wish to start adding in the information recorded in the "House and
Building Return (Form B1)"and "Out-Offices and Farm-Steadings Return (Form
B2)" and was wondering where others recorded this, and whether they only
recorded it for the head of the household or for all members of the
household.

[LegacyUG] Check all Media Files - lf.jpg file constantly reported as Missing (Legacy 9)

2017-04-29 Thread Alan Thompson
When I run the Check All Media Locations routine to make a list of all
missing medial files, the resulting report always includes the default
lf.jpg file which Legacy automatically associates with any non-picture
document (eg pdfs etc) linked to one's tree

Does anyone know if there is any way to exclude this file from the report?
The reason I ask is because, of the approximately 10,000 files that are
listed when I run the report for my legacy family tree, some 9,800 are for
this one file - and it is annoying to have to manually remove them from the
report before I investigate the files that are genuinely missing.

Thanks

RE: [LegacyUG] Check/Repair Steps

2015-05-26 Thread Alan Thompson
Sherry

I expected as much but thought I'd give it a try anyway. Because I load and
manipulate large amounts of data directly to the database using Microsoft
Access rather than the Legacy front end program, I thought it would be useful
to know all the things the check/repair routine already checks for so that I
can make sure that my own data upload and manipulation routines are consistent
with these. I already know some of the things it checks for as a result of
mistakes I have made when uploading data in the past, and have needed to
restore a backup as a result. I run check/repair at least once every day and
after each data upload or data manipulation routine when doing these so it is a
feature of the Legacy program that I very much rely on and appreciate.

[LegacyUG] Suggested Improvements to Chronology View in Legacy Version 8 Deluxe Edition

2014-09-07 Thread Alan Thompson
Greetings

I am currently reviewing the Chronology Tab in Legacy Version 8.0.0.439
Deluxe Edition and seek feedback on some suggested improvements I have,
prior to submitting them:

1. (this probably should be classed as a bug) In the text displayed in
the Info column for son and daughters birth events, the text specifying the
parents of the child should include a space on either side of the and ie
it currently displays, for example, son of Thomas NorrisandJane Lambert.
Rather than son of Thomas Norris and Jane Lambert. (both Report Style and
List Style and the Report itself)

2. In the Event column, the event labels Son Born and Daughter born
should be changed to Birth of Son and Birth of Daughter to be consistent
with other Birth of. event labels (both Report Style and List Style and
the Report itself)

3. In the Event column, the event label Death of Child should be
changed to Death of Son or Death of Daughter as appropriate to be
consistent with separate identification of Son and daughter birth event
labels (both Report Style and List Style and the Report itself)

4. I would like the option to include the Events Marriage of Son and
Marriage of Daughter in the Chronology view (both Report Style and List
Style and the Report itself)

5. (this probably should be classed as a bug) In the Display
Options. dialogue screen, Include tab, Marriage Events Section, the
check box Death of Husband should be relabelled Death of Spouse

6. The order of columns should, as a minimum, be made consistent
between Report Style and List Style Views (currently event and date columns
are swapped around between views). Ideally, the ability for the user to
select their own preferred Column order would be best, but short of that, I
think the following order the next best solution: Date Age Event
Info (both Report Style and List Style and the Report itself)

7. In the Age column, the displayed age should be Right Justified
(both Report Style and List Style and the Report itself)

8. In the Date column, when the Display dates with year first
checkbox is Unchecked, the displayed date should be Right Justified so
that the years of all events align to maximum extent possible (both Report
Style and List Style and the Report itself)

9. I would prefer the tilde ~ character to be removed from the
calculated ages in the Age Columns (both Report Style and List Style and the
Report itself). That the age may be an approximation based on a calculation
can be implied from the dates recorded and hence the ~ is somewhat
redundant.

10. Include the ability to select a specific event displayed within the
Chronology view and then open the Edit Event dialog box. After viewing
editing the event and closing the Edit Event dialog, the user would return
to an updated Chronology View (List Style only) (This functionality would be
similar to that available in the Timeline section of the Overview tab on
ancestry.com, which I like.)

11. Include the ability to select a specific event displayed within the
Chronology view and then open the Assigned Sources dialog box to display
the assigned sources for the selected event. After viewing or editing the
assigned sources and closing the Assigned Sources dialog, the user would
return to the Chronology View (List Style only) (This functionality would be
similar to that available in the Timeline section of the Overview tab on
ancestry.com, which I like.)

For your consideration

Cheers

Alan Thompson

[LegacyUG] Fonts for Labels in Family View: Possible Bug in Version 8.0.0.439

2014-09-04 Thread Alan Thompson
Greetings

Unless I am missing something I think there is a bug in Legacy Version 8.0
which I would like others to confirm before I log a problem report. I am
currently testing Version 8.0.0.439 Standard Edition.

I attempted to change the Font by which labels are displayed in the Family
View from the default Ariel font to Times New Roman, by following the
following path:

Options / Customise / 10. Fonts / 10.1 Screen Fonts (gbl) / Labels / Change:
(select: Times New Roman) / Save

I then returned to Family View where I find: Labels for Husband and Wife
have changed to Times New Roman (including their Born, Chr, Died,
Bur labels etc), but the Parents Marriage and Children Labels remain
unchanged (as the Ariel default)

I note that the labels that failed to change are those labels that were not
included in the Legacy Version 7.5 Family View, while those that do get
updated already existed in the 7.5 Version. Maybe this could indicate the
reason why there is a problem.

Cheers

Alan

In your main Legacy Folder look for the jpg. called lv.jpg and rename that to

Then add whatever image you want to use into that same folder and name it lv.jpg

I would like to be able to display various different images to this default

the tblBR table and created a new replacement record with the PicName field
updated to If.jpg and the IDBPPic field updated to 1, all other details

[LegacyUG] Recording Australian Land Selection Records in Legacy

2014-03-08 Thread Alan Thompson
Hi

I am interested in the views of Legacy Users researching Australian families
on possible ways to record within Legacy the information extracted from
Australian Land Selection Records, with particular focus on Victorian Land
Selections. For example do users create a separate new Land Selection
event/fact or use the existing Land event/fact. Also, do users have just a
single event/fact to cover the entire Land Selection process from original
application to final ownership of the land or do they create a separate
event/fact for each milestone along the way.

Finally, I would be interested in views on how best to record the Master
Source and Source Detail information for the documents within a Victorian
Land Selection File held by the Public Records Office of Victoria, in
particular those in Series VPRS 625 and VPRS 626 (Land Selection Files,
sections 19 and 20, Land Act 1869).

RE: [LegacyUG] File ID's

2014-01-12 Thread Alan Thompson
Kathy

For you information, the “1,7884::30370810” number, and its like, typically
come from a gedcom file exported from an ancestry.com family tree. This number
is ancestry’s way of linking an individual’s event in an ancestry family tree
to the source record in ancestry.com’s databases. The “7884” represents the
particular database (in this case the 1910 United States Federal Census) and
the number after the :: represents the individual record within that database.
When you export a gedcom from ancestry.com the record will look something like
this:

1 RESI

2 DATE 1963

2 PLAC Mooroopna North, Victoria, Australia

2 SOUR @S-411220237@

3 _APID 1,1207::90856601

When you then import that record into Legacy, Legacy places the _APID number
into the FilingRef field in the tblSX (Source Detail) table which is then
displayed as theFile ID in the Source Detail Screen.

Interestingly, and usefully (at least for me), if you export a gedcom file from
Legacy which contains these _APID numbers in the FilingRef field, and then
import that gedcom (after some minimal and simple manual editing) into a family
tree in ancestry.com, ancestry will automatically re-establish the links to the
relevant source database and individual record.

I hope this helps.

2014-01-12 Thread Alan Thompson
Pres,

I'm still working with Legacy 7.5 (perhaps, I should have mentioned that in my
original post), so I don't know if Legacy 8 processes gedcoms from ancestry.com
any differently.

Whenever I do an Import from GEDCOM file (File Import from GEDCOM file...)
I always import the data into a NEW Legacy family file, and after choosing the
file to import and clicking the Start the Import button, I always click on
the Don't Assign a Source button on the AutoSource Reminder screen that is
then displayed. Using this process I never get any message saying that all
sources will be stripped out or anything similar. I'm not sure if selecting
different options would result in such a message.

I hope this helps

The Imported Tag is a marker on an Individual that identifies that the
Individual was created by importing the details into the family file. This
distinguishes those individuals from the rest who were no doubt created
directly by you using Add New Individual (of one variety or other).

If you want to find them all, use the Search function.

Look for: Individual
Where to look: Imported
How to look: Equal to
What to look for: YES

RE: [LegacyUG] When to use est and when to use abt

2014-01-07 Thread Alan Thompson
Without wishing to flog a dead horse, I humbly suggest that this whole brouhaha
stems from a failure to distinguish between HOW a particular date for an event
determined and the LEVEL OF PRECISION of the event date. For me:

CAL(culated) and EST(imated) and the like would seem to indicate HOW (the
method by which) a date was determined and on their own indicate nothing about
the LEVEL OF PRECISION of that date.
AB(ou)T, CIR(ca), and the like indicate the LEVEL OF PRECISION of a given date
and on their own indicate nothing about HOW that date was determined.

Thus 15-Mar-1931, Mar-1931, 1931, ABT 15-Mar-1931, ABT Mar-1931, ABT 1931
represent dates with different levels of precision, but each and all of those
dates could have been determined by calculation, estimation, direct evidence
based on one or more sources of information, etc.

Accordingly, I only enter dates into the date field that show the level of
precision of the event date. I use ABT, BEF(ore), AFT(er), etc if my method of
determining the date does not allow me to be more precise. I would never enter
CAL or EST or anything that indicated how a date was determined into the date
field itself. I record how that date and its level of precision was derived
(calculated, estimated, guessed, directly sourced or otherwise) in the event
notes and source detail comments and also indicate the surety level thereof, as
appropriate.

RE: [LegacyUG] PicNameURL field

2013-03-08 Thread Alan Thompson
Thanks Richard and Jay

Not the answer I was hoping for but sort of the answer I was expecting. For me,
even if it was included as a simple editable text field without the actual
hyperlink functionality, which you could then cut and paste into your web
browser, it would still be an advance. At the moment I have resorted to storing
the hyperlink in the Source Detail comments field and Picture Description
fields.

I agree that they are likely there waiting for the dreamers to find a way to
use them.
PicNameURL and PicSoundNameURL are totally vacant fields in over
14,000 records in my database. If and when they are used it will be a big
advance.

It may be that the field is there but that it's not yet in use by the
 current version of Legacy.

That does help but it raises the questions: where in the Legacy front end
 application

(1)does one input the url that is to be stored in thPicNameURL field?

(2)does one access the url and so connect to the picture, video, or
 document referenced by the url?

 Thanks

full url to a picture, video or document on the internet

 Hope that helps.

RE: [LegacyUG] Tool to add missing period after an initial in a name

2013-02-16 Thread Alan Thompson
Thank you to Brian and the two Rons for your suggestions. I went with the 26
search and replaces option from within Legacy and it actually turned out to be
pretty quick and painless after all.

There is no tool but search Search and Replace should be able to do the job
if you search for each of the 26 letters followed by a space, Use the option to
find whole word only so you do not find names ending with the search letter. If
all your initials follow a full name you can search for spaceletterspace as the
word.

Replace the found letter with the letter and a period.

You can also edit the person from the potential problem list to fix their
initials without periods. Not too useful for you with thousands to do but for
those who only have a few that may be a quicker alternative than 26 search and
replace operations.

I note that the Potential Problem report can be run to identify a

is there a tool or simple method which allows one to correct this

I have just imported a gedcom file which contains thousands of records
with this problem and I would prefer not to have to correct them one
by one. I searched Help but could not find an answer.

 Thank you
