Birth of first child is later than normal after Marriage Date of Parents.
Verify the birth and marriage dates.
There might be a child missing.

I also don't think its hard to be polite, watch the tone of messages, if you
want people to go to the effort of posting in 2 places.

There is also no need to 'SHOUT in these messages, Manners go a lot further.

I agree.

I'm sure we all do very much appreciate the invariably timely and helpful
responses from Cathy and Michele to posted problems on this list.

However I think it would also solve some of the angst if any Legacy
announcements could also be posted to this list. It can't be that hard. We
don't need all the Facebook posts, only any "announcements", whether formal or
not. "Legacy News" is not enough.

Yes, FB might have some advantages over this list, but the reality is that a
significant proportion of faithful Legacy customers just do not want to join
Facebook. Please, do not "leave us in the dust".

REREAD what I wrote. I'm not expecting whole conversations from FB to
be posted here.

If a staff member posts and announcement, such as build release, new
webinar, reduced rates for MyHeritage or upgrade prices for Legacy or
Legacy products = THOSE should be posted on the LUG list. Tips would
also be nice. How-to only if someone on the LUG list asks.

How hard is that to understand?

FB Notifications are IMPOSSIBLE. I've turned them off in most of the
groups I am a member of (I have no "Friends" on FB as they're insane
as well - I've seen some of the threads and no way do I have the time
or energy for that nonsense!) and have few showing only in FB. I will
not get them by text or email. Even if they're not Legacy posts.

FB is so changeable that FB Purity has a hard time keeping up. Plus it
seems to slow FB down, at least for me.

I do subscribe to the LUG email. However, it seems that FB is quicker
for notifications as those are posted right away and the LUG email is
generally quite behind.

The original message to the list is in the attachment.

This action is required because of the DMARC Reject/Quarantine Policy
imposed by some email providers. Users who want to send messages
without conversion to attachments should use a different email address
for their subscription.

Known providers for free email accounts whose emails do not require
this conversion include gmail.com and hotmail.com. Many other email
providers will also work but you will have to give them a try.--- Begin Message ---

But have we not been told the other providers are not free, so would increase

I absolutely loved this feature on Version 8 and used it all the time. Ever

It has been way too long to get this back up and running again.

[LegacyUG] FW: Warning about MyHeritage / OFF LIST / Personal Emails

2018-06-22 Thread Carrie Pillow

Arnold

Ok I wasn’t really dissing Norton, but I have worked in IT for over 30 years ,
teaching accounting software and databases, rebuilding systems when people have
lost data dur to viruses.

Norton has it place and it kept vigilantly up to date can look after the
average home computer,

but in my experience when a virus has got past it, it hasn’t the ability deal
with it, and a much more robust package to deal with it,

I am a little concerned that personal emails are appearing on this list
though!!! Please see Highlighted below

Re: [LegacyUG] V 9.0.0.226

2018-05-23 Thread Carrie Pillow
It’s a Blip

Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater

Legacy by far is the best product on the market, if a issue comes along that
causes crashes, the programmers at legacy sort it as fast as they can.

This happens in all software and a lot of us use one of the worst on the market
for it Microsoft windows!

If you find a issue report it appropriately, with the steps you tool, in order
that they can replicate and fix!

Before any up date we all should backup at least twice, so there is no one to
blame for a lost database, but ourselves, if we don’t.

One thing that causes problems - when you go to the link to unsubscribe, you

Dear Legacy users,

OK Carry, Sherry, everyone: I hear you, so I am asking for user support. I want

hyperlink URL's in reports.

In addition to pictures and documents (I have never used sound files and video

Galleries (of Individuals, Stories and Places) in order to provide further,
in-depth & graphic information about the individuals, the places where they
were born, lived and died, and so on. Legacy is perfectly capable to store that
information and on-screen, using Legacy, the genealogy comes to life! However,
I sorely miss all of that information showing in hyperlink format in the
various PDF reports, especially TCGR, which I have found to be a really good
companion reporting program. Maybe anyone has figured out how to get URL's in
hyperlink format in reports?
I have gone through all the export and reporting settings in Legacy and TCGR
burt have not as yet been able to achieve what I want.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Henk.

[LegacyUG] Legacy

2018-02-24 Thread Carrie Pillow
A Add on, integration issues fine, but their membership issues are a My
Heritage issue. Not a Legacy Support issue.

There have been many complaints of this list getting smaller or Quiet.

There were complaints when Michelle did a Legitimate Legacy poll to gauge
feature usage.

I think this list needs to stay on point LEGACY, otherwise it will drive more
people away!

If you want to argue with the guidelines, go ahead, Carrie. These have been in
place since the Legacy Lists first started...

I'm not looking at changing rules. You *could* consider the MyHeritage website
as an "add-on program". But they *do* own Legacy and I see no reason why
the website for the company that owns Legacy can't be discussed.

Sherry

(And I haven't a clue where that horrid URL came from, but it does take you to
the Legacy User Group Guidelines web page)

Actually, since Legacy is owned by MyHeritage, it should be ok to discuss the
site.

It's better to be "nice" than rant, but I see no reason why dissatisfaction
about either should be disallowed. I think we should be made aware of problems
and issues that come up. It can help someone in the future pay closer attention
to what their doing and avoid the heartache of automatic renewal if they can't
afford it or have a problem remembering to cancel the renewal.

I don't subscribe to any of the paid sites since being retired I can't afford
it and they're all available for free anyway at the local FHC.

Amen Pauline; automatic renewals should be outlawed. I guess they think we are
all too stupid to check credit card statements. Perhaps it's just another
covert method to separate folks from their money in this all too capitalistic
society. Now even the internet is a bad as TV with pop-up commercials to BUY,
BUY, BUY. Genealogy used to be an enjoyable pastime; thank you corporate
America for ruining it. Go buy another politician and leave us alone!

<crame...@comcast.net<mailto:crame...@comcast.net>> wrote:

I was reviewing a lot of comments about MyHeritage on the Legacy User Group
and ran across the comment Carrie Pillow wrote mentioning "you can transfer
your raw DNA to MyHeritage for free. You must have an account with MyHeritage
to do this but you can create a free account which allows you to have a tree up
to 250 people."

Sorry. Be wary of anything "free" from MyHeritage. My husband and I first did
autosomal testing with 23andMe in about 2013. They also had a crude tool for
entering family tree history. I detested the clunky format and did not enter
much data on it. Later, 23andMe informed us they were no longer going to
support family tree data, and they had sent our DNA and family tree data to
MyHeritage. That was in February of 2014. I had previously opened an account
on WorldVitalRecords, and in February 2014, MyHeritage informed me that
WorldVitalRecords had been merged with MyHeritage, so in February 2014,
MyHeritage said they had given us "a free empty MyHeritage account for one
year, which is a gift worth $119, for free, and we would have access to World
Vital Records and My Heritage both. The Premium Plus account will not renew
automatically. By creating your family tree on our site, you will
automatically receive your matches for free. "

In February 2015, email from MyHeritage thanked me for purchasing an annual
bundle of data subscription plus PremiumPlus family site. You have been charged
US $99.95 ...We have upgraded our existing family site Cramer Family Site to
PremiumPlus. I had to request a new password, because I had not been using it
and had not recorded the password. The next day, they sent another email
starting with "An error occurred while renewing your MyHeritage Data
Subscription. It was not possible to extend your subscription and it expired.
" They offered a MyHeritage Data subscription that will cots US $71.40 for one
year, instead of the usual $119.40. About two weeks later I requested a new
password again and tried entering data again, but did not like the user
interface. Again in Feb 2015, I requested a new password. So I remember I
put a few photos on the tree, but I really did not like the data entry format.
That was about the last time I remember even looking at the MyHeritage website,
until I started noticing funny little orange icons turning up on my Legacy
Family Tree on my desktop computer.

Apparently my desktop computer was getting messages from MyHeritage asking me
to verify something someone else had entered on their trees, and smart matches
found my entries, which I found very annoying, since whenever I saw these
messages, my mind was always focused on something else far away. I have been a
subscriber to Ancestry.com for many years, and I have been focusing on
AncestryDNA and growing my trees on Ancestry.com and on my Legacy Family Tree
file, and looking for my 1000+ living cousins on AncestryDNA, and how I am
connected to them, and also on FTDNA and 23andMe. And I had no interest in
working on the old trees on MyHeritage. And I never considered buying DNA
analysis from My Heritage. But I noticed people on the Legacy Family Tree user
group talking about My Heritage DNA testing.

Unfortunately, a few days ago, Februrary 2018, I noticed an email from
MyHeritage saying I was charged $250.74. This shocked me because I thought my
subscription had expired. I asked my husband to check charges. He had just
paid it that morning. He also found we had paid $238.80 in 2016, etc.. Which
was another shocker. He immediately sent an email cancelling the 2018 payment
he had just made. It took a couple of years to look at 5 years of paper trail.
We appear to have have charged over $750 for something I did not ask for in
the first place and did not like when I attempted to use it. I have been
using Legacy Family Tree for over 15 years, since 2002, but, if Legacy Family
Tree is now

Many times a child will be visiting a neighbor, or other family member when the

I would also make a note of his absence in the family home only after you find

I have looked at shared events but they change my sentences and put in
extraneous items I don’t want. I tried to make it work for me but couldn’t.

they only allow one DNA per email account. Or it might be that I couldn't

Donna,

You have to decide how much census data you include. I do much the same as
Geoff Rasmussen does. See the webinar: Watch Geoff Live - entering a census
except I think he shares with other household members. For this webinar you
need a subscription.

I transcribe the household for myself and include the transcription in Event
notes for the head or household or person of interest in the household and in
the Source Detail text.
Others will copy the transcription from a website as is or add corrections and
missing information. I find it is usually quicker to make my own transcription
but then I can type. Transcribing for yourself also means you are more likely
to really see all the data.

I enter a census event for everyone using the Event Clipboard to copy to other
members of the household. It copies the links so if you edit after you copy,
it's th e edited version that is pasted. It is complete with sources and media.

Others use the Shared event option that was introduced in Legacy 8.

Some download and attach census images to the event, others to the source,
others to both. I rarely even download the census image these days except for
direct line or if there is something unusual about the entry.

In terms of sourcing, the source doesn't change in any way for a census
household.
If you haven't learnt to use the Source Clipboard, you need to stop and do that
first as it saves heaps of time. See the free webinar

Just be consistent.

Hello Henk
I just want to applaud your decision to put your family tree up on the
internet, I did so 6 yrs ago and it has been successful beyond my wildest
dreams.
For example I had 3,036,060 hits last year, 623,068 visitors opened 2,027,488
pages, 83,420 persons returned two or more times.
The family tree has trebled in size from family contacts and contributions see
the Contributors page on the Home Page, and I have a mailing list of more than
300.

www.thekingscandlesticks.com
is the website I chose the family candlesticks as a focal point of the
website.
To enable an intuitive website I used Xara Web Designer Premium which after a
bit of head scratching I learned, it is very simple in reality
To the Home page I linked the various exports from Legacy, plus the other data
under the black & white buttons. The picture slider was also a Xara feature.
If a researcher around the world Googles the name of a person as on the site,
it will usually show within the first 3 hits ( Smith & Brown excepted)

I am getting due to rework the site a bit, for example in the last 3 yrs I have
been putting up images with what needs to be written about them under
"Events", which I have relabelled "Other Records" scroll down on my 3xGt
Grandmother Harriet Harrold and you will see what I mean
http://www.thekingscandlesticks.com/webs/pedigrees/231.html
This means all data now is recorded under a RIN file as far as possible and I
will be able to remove the Documents button and reduce the photos section.

I use DOMAINZ a NZ company but now based in Melbourne for my hosting and while
there were a few rocky moments in the past they have settled down to become a
reliable provider, you pay but it is a pittance to keep you and your website as
safe as possible, domain names are also registered through them.
As I see recommended I also use FileZilla as the interface between your PC and
your website.

My family is a large one at first, I was receiving 4 or 5 new emails a day on
edw...@thekingscandlesticks.com this
has now reduced to a week, but there is continual communication with existing
Contributors adding data and swapping ideas.

I retired in 1995 and set about compiling the Tree putting up the website has
been a most fulfilling experience. My wife put up her website last year
www.thelockedjournal.com
with a great response, we did not seek to reinvent a success story.

Finally I did not want to entrust my work for a lot of reasons to Cloud sites.

Please do not hesitate to ask me more, I am in Auckland

Cheers

Dear Legacy Users,

My name is Henk Bastiaanse and I live in Australia. I have been using various
genealogy software programs over the past 11 years and am using Legacy for
about 2 years. I am extremely happy with Legacy (9.0). However, the time has
come to share all collected information with extended family and post the
family tree - containing over 20,000 people and over a thousand pictures and
person- and location information - on the Internet.

What would be your suggestion how to do this and to which site to post it to? I
would really like to keep and share all collected information, including the
information in "Stories" etc.

Thanking you in advance for any feedback,

Kind Regards,

Steve,

I suppose “good luck” would be an appropriate expression. I moved my data to
Legacy last year and was working on cleaning up place location information –
just started with locations beginning with H – when the maps went down. That
has been just over three and a half months ago.

If you are interested, it seems that RootsMagic has the same problem, beginning
about the same time.

However, three other genealogy database software – the current versions of
Family Tree Make, Family Historian, and Heredis all have Bing maps working just
fine with no failures.

I definitely wonder about this problem.

Another company got the problem fixed right away, but supposedly with Legacy
there's some issue with the older programming language used or the coding or
something. I keep hearing about the major project it is to fix it. Maps are
used in numerous areas in Legacy.

I wonder why they can't use something like Google maps instead? I know a ton of
Legacy users use the mapping a lot and really miss it. I do!

Hi Kevin,

I was expecting to be able to add my DNA results to my Legacy program, I was
quite disappointed to learn that what I had expected to receive will not
happen, this is the reply that I received when I inquired about my DNA results.

There are three major types of genealogical DNA tests available: the y-DNA
test, the mtDNA test and the
autosomal DNA test. Each test produces different information. MyHeritage offers
the autosomal DNA test

The MyHeritage DNA kit is an autosomal DNA test for genetic genealogy, designed
to discover and identify relatives and ancestors, through DNA matches with
MyHeritage's genealogical matching database.

Humans have 46 chromosomes. The MyHeritage DNA test looks at the first 44
'autosomal' chromosomes, that aren't the X or Y chromosomes determining your
gender, identifying linked DNA segments. It analyses the DNA inherited from
both your mother and father, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents, and
so on - to provide a breakdown of your ethnic percentages and connect you with
relatives descended from any of your ancestral lines within approximately the
last 6 generations.
Both men and women can take the MyHeritage DNA test and the results are not

Subject: [LegacyUG] MyHeritage DNA test

Hi there,

I ordered a MyHeritage DNA kits for my wife and I and I wanted to know how to
input the results into Legacy. I clicked on the DNA symbol in the "Individual
Information" screen but didn't see an entry for MyHeritage DNA service. I find
this odd as the email I got from Legacy seemed to be endorsing the MyHeritage
DNA kits.

Has anyone managed to add their results to Legacy and if so, how?

Thank you for any pointers.

Best regards

Kevin

Hi

This has been asked and answered many times on here and facebook,

please don't let this be a long winded debate again.

The programmers have already said this is not going to be a quick fix, it not
the only priority.

Legacy is a program far beyond any other. Please be patient there are always
other jobs that need doing in genealogy.

Please can we move on

Cathy,

Have to admit that your comment about maps -- "Bing turning off the way they
were being accessed" -- has me curious From whom did you receive this
information?

I am only asking as while I know of two genealogy software (Legacy is one)
where maps stopped functioning three months ago, I do know of three other
genealogy software that use Bing maps without problem and have had no
interruptions during the same period.

Thanks,

Maps are broken in all versions of Legacy currently due to Bing turning off the
way they were being accessed.
They will be fixed in Legacy 9 in a future update.

If your old computer is still working and providing that you have been backing

One of the concerns that I am seeing in this set of messages is a fear that
MyHeritage will be able to extract a copy of your tree from your local PC
through Legacy.

To do that, they will need to get Millennia to make changes to the Legacy
program, which I doubt that they will do so long as they are operating
totally separately.

If they did manage to make that change they would also need your explicit
permission to do it.

Doing it without permission, which could be done, is the theft of your
private information, including information on living people.

That would be illegal in the EU, GB and, I assume, USA, and I am sure that
your USA based users are quite capable of raising a class issue against them
if they did it.

If, as it has been suggested, MyHeritage have ignored a user setting that a
tree is Private and converted it to Public tree with no permission, they are
again breaking our laws.

So, there should not be an issue here, but we do need to keep an eye on
what they are planning and doing.

Chris

Anne,
It still applies.

Besides it's not so easy to sync a desktop database with an online tree
system. Note the delay in the release of FTM and RootsMagic sync ability
with the Ancestry tree.
Any syncing between a Legacy family file and a My Heritage tree requires the
development of the mechanism to do it.
It won't come before Legacy 10 and is expected to be entirely optional.
On top of that you then have the Privacy settings on a MyHeritage tree
apparently. I don't have one.

MyHeritage allows you to refuse permission for anyone to view or even find your
tree unless you have made them a member of your site. You can also deny members
the ability to make changes - they must send you the information or post it in
the Family News section whence it is automatically emailed to you.

They need Legacy's programming talent!

Hi Dennis,

Very well said – you’ve pretty well covered my concerns over this acquisition.
I don’t hear many voices saying this is a good thing!

I quit using FTM as it could no longer handle the size of my file (no longer a
problem). They also changed their format. I much like the way Legacy approaches
the input of data.

The bad reviews on MyHeritage seem to vastly outnumber the (genuine) good
reviews. I, too, may be looking for another program.

I also have used Legacy for years after trying every genealogy program in the
market, as well as some that no longer exist. In my opinion the corporate
concept that "bigger id better" was born from either sheer greed or total
ignorance. My first voyage into the online data posting was with Rootsweb,
because it vowed to always "remain free." Then along comes Ancestry and they
gobble up Rootsweb, adding their databases to Ancestry World Tree. I know this
to be a fact as beginner errors in my original Rootsweb Gedcom have transferred
over to the Ancestry database.

And now along comes MyHeritage and they "merge" with Millennia, which is likely
a quaint euphemism for "buy everything you got" including and especially their
programmers..The handwriting on the wall reads "open your wallet" as we're
going a la carte..

I quit using Family Tree Maker due to their corporate greed in making sure each
new version was incompatible with earlier versions, thus forcing you to buy the
next upgrade. And now Jack has his thumb in Legacy's plumb pie and I wonder how
long it will take before all prices go up.

Last but not least, it was but two weeks ago that I had to vehemently protest
to MyHeritage and one of its contributors about data posted on their site
concerning my "living" relatives. They did remove it but there is no telling
how long it was there and who may or may not have downloaded it. While many
sites do remove details about living persons, they do NOT remove their names;
none of the online databases that I know do this - but they should! As any
decent genealogist and/or identity thief knows, it's not that difficult to find
all sorts of information about a person given their parents and siblings names.

There had better be a sure-fire way to "opt out" of any automatic grabbing of
any Legacy data by MyHeritage or I will be looking for yet another genealogy
program.

became “Legacy”, and thru the years convinced many friends to become Legacy
users. I still haven’t mastered all the benefits available in Legacy 8, and I
have resisted upgrading to Legacy 9. Now I am sure I will stay with Legacy 8
as long as it still functions on my computer. I’m disappointed, but hope this
works out for Millennia.

Hi Shane

I am hesitant regarding My Heritage, I find the standard of their transcripts
poor, but I am in great hope that the acquisition of a quality product like
legacy and the Legacy customer support will make My Heritage sit up and think;
and up their game.

There are some wonderful features in 9, that as a Beta tester I have seen get
better and better, I also trust the Legacy team to be open an honest, so I have
no worries regarding using legacy 9.

There has never been a better time to try it, and I know it’s not possible to
go directly back to 8 from 9, but there is nothing stopping you exporting a
gedcom to any program you wish use in the future

I do not have a MyHeritage account, but when I looked at it again after the
merger announcement, it seems to be a family tree website. I searched for some
of my ancestors and saw errors in just the little bit they let me see without
an account, just as when I search the Ancestry trees.

I have used Legacy just about from its beginning, through all the versions. I
do not used the search features; I just want good software that lets me
document names and personal data, events, and sources in an efficient manner,
and then lets me print useful and well-formatted reports. I also use it to
create webpages for my own family history website. I don’t upload family trees
to sites like Ancestry and MyHeritage or Genii. I want a website that shows
complete source documentation and event notes that are as long as I want. The
thing I would like Legacy is to allow drag and drop on the webpages instead of
just source code. I have tried TNG more than once, including having them set
it up, etc., and then paying someone to help a bit, but I just can’t master it.
Legacy webpages are easy for the reader to maneuver, and I like that
uncluttered aspect.

Through the years I have tried most of the other genealogy software, but Legacy
has fit my needs better than any. I do genealogy research on a client basis
also, and I use Legacy if the project is large enough to merit it. It creates
footnotes for me to paste into the narrative report I write for the client, as
well as printing reports when needed and creating a simple family tree for the
client, if the project is large enough. I create a family file and point them
to the Legacy free download so they can see literally all my research.

I am hoping for the best.

Thanks. I just loaded Access on my computer as it seems improving my Access

I don’t believe that you can include an address in a search string. But you
can find and tag all individuals with no Burial Place and then scroll through
the Search Results list looking for the blue button adjacent to the “Buried
in” field on the Edit page. If its shaded out, there is no address for the
Buried Place. Tag such persons and you will have created the list you want –
with one caveat: If the blue button is highlited, there is likely to be a
burial address – but it could be just an indication of a Burial
Note/Picture/Cremated (not likely, but possible). Klunky, but it might work
for you.

The only sure way I can think of is to go into MS Access and write a suitable
query. Easy to say, but not if you don’t know Access.

Re: [LegacyUG] DNA and Genealogy

2016-11-28 Thread Carrie Pillow
Hi

Even though I agree DNA is not an easy option, if I had not taken the leap
after Geoff's webinar, I would not have proved who my great grandfather was,
as no document trail would have helped

Sorry John Bernacki, I cannot agree. I have had my DNA done and also several
cousins have too. Though the efforts of 4 of us we could verify and document
a new GGG Grandfather.
They knew enough that helped me go to microfilm and locate deed records
showing the sale of land that tied the family together. IF you want to find
new lines, you try all tools.

I recently had my DNA tested via the Genographic Project.
They use Y-DNA,
Mt-DNA and autosomal DNA to determine your Haplogroups and regional
ancestry, which is what I wanted.

If you want to try to find relatives, you can, free of charge, transfer your
results to FamilyTreeDNA, and use their program for that purpose. I did not
take that step because it would be a waste of time.

Frankly, I am disgusted by all the companies misleading people about how
useful or easy DNA is for finding relatives. Autosomal DNA only works for
the few most recent generations, and that information would be much more
easily found using traditional genealogy practices. Even if you find a
possible relative by using DNA, you still need to use traditional geology to
confirm it.

In Legacy there is no specified field for adding your Haplogroups and
regional ancestry, although you could put it general notes etc.

John
