Ladies, just drag the box to the same screen. Windows should remember and next
time it won’t appear on the wrong screen screen. However I have seen where you
maybe running multiple programs where it may appear on top, so you may hear the
ding… usually the taskbar also may have an icon of a different intensity.
I hope this helps.

For now you cannot use the search feature to isolate a specific
relationship.

It has been reported and hopefully will be addressed ASAP.

For now you can print (to CSVfile) the relationship report and then open it
in a spreadsheet for sorting.

that it goes to their new page, and does not take you to the memorial? Their
new page stinks and is not as easy to use as the old one. I hope that number
will still work when they finally get settled. Leonard

Hi,

I have many individuals which have a source assigned to the Unspecified

I now wish to delete all the sources from the Unspecified 'event', does
anyone know how to do this or if it is even possible from within Legacy V9?

What if it isn’t a typo? People go in occasionally to FAG and add a duplicate
memorial, when it is discovered one of them is removed, it could be the one
that you are citing. I have had it happened to me occasionally. Annoying, but
ok for me because I am putting the number in the description section of events
under cemetery. I can see where it would really mess up individuals that have
used the FAG field in v9.

Don’t know of a solution for it. The program should say which individual they
are removing the number so you can go back and put in the new number.

And it wipes out both the good and the bad numbers., Now while the good is
easy to recover because they capture it and report , the bad is lost. So in

I have an interest in this location because it is the city of my husband’s

All areas of Alaska are boroughs except for Anchorage, which is known as one

Thanks for that. It shows what I discovered how to do, but - and it's a big

When I looked at it, I had the same problem. I don't think the instructions

needs the Spell Checker to have stopped at a word it doesn't recognize,
otherwise you just get a notification that the Spell Check is complete.

I prefer the presentation of TNG over the Legacy-created web pages, but there

Ian, if you have a website to upload to, you can create your web pages
in Legacy. I have a TNG site thru the Guild of One-name Studies, but i
plan to create web pages in Legacy and upload it to my website, (If I
can remember where it is!) The TNG site is for my one-name study. I
have a rather large collection of dead relatives for my own use.
Try the Legacy help section. It has a very good explanation .

I have a TNG site up but have no clue how to manage it and am far too slow

restricted web page, set permissions and then sleep until the next update is
created.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to Link Mother

2017-06-25 Thread Henry T. Peterson Jr.

This can happen as you do research.

I find the best way is to….

1. Write down the RIN of all of the Children.(you may forget)

2. Unlink affected children.(right-click)

3. Change family view to reflect correct parents.(click on the side of parent
box)

4. Relink children to parents. (change surname if different father)

If you are unsure of your work methods, do backups first.

For me this works every time.

I have an individual I've added a couple children to but was unsure of the
mother. So I added them just to the father (no mother). After research, I have
decided they belong to wife #1 (already linked to father). When I try to add
mother, I select the option to link to an existing individual (the box title
is: add spouse t0). After selecting the correct mother, I receive a box
(Duplication) with the message that [mother] is already the wife of [father].
What am I doing wrong?

Re: [LegacyUG] gedcom

Yes, I am retired so there are days I work for hours on the desktop. So I do
redundant backups occasionally during those intervals.

So before I shut down all done even flash drive and media files as explained.

In the morning I may have somewhere to go maybe do some genealogy at the
library.

So I start up the laptop bring all utilities up to date and make sure Windows
has finished updating. Then I transfer the applicable files from the flash
drive to the laptop.

If I follow this procedure I probably won’t go wrong.

By the way bring the flash drive with you because if you work on the laptop
then you need to reverse the procedure to update the desktop when you get home.

Take the file you used to install Legacy to the first computer and copy it to a
flash drive. Eject the flash drive and insert it into the second computer. Use
that file to install Legacy to the second computer.

Then any appropriate databases and media files would also have to be moved via
backup and maybe be delivered by a flash drive to the second computer.

Any settings and license information would have to be made on the second
computer, so that is will function like the first computer.

birth and death for both parties. It also gives you the option to add the

I doubt you mean you printed from View - Marriage List a tagged group of

So do you mean an Ancestor Chart? and was it done in Legacy Charting perhaps?
Adding the parents would just be adding another generation.

I guess it's possible you mean the Family Picture Tree Report in Legacy.

Can you put a picture of it somewhere (Dropbox, Evernote) and post a link here?
In the Facebook group you could just add the picture but they're against the

Re: [LegacyUG] New Find-a-Grave feature

2017-05-02 Thread Henry T. Peterson Jr.
Scott and Brian and others

Yes it is wonderful to have the FAG tool...
Yes I screened a lot of FAG sites over the years.
I was getting headstones sometime obits that included names of children,
etc.

Now I don't have to get headstones which saves a lot of work creating
additional events.

Yes after having the new tool I am having to re-visit a lot of sites to
incorporate the memorial number in my Legacy file.
But, it is all worth it.. I have a hashtag created for everyone with a
memorial number and it all exports in GEDCOM that I use on my TNG website.
* Instant link to FAG memorial

Still have a long way to go only have about 8400 so far done.

I am not aware of any global tool to perform this task inside legacy. If you
have MS Access or Open Office you may be able to do an update query to copy
the FAG number from those events to the FAG data.

Other wise you can search for those 5400 people with the Find A Grave Event,
tag them with a Hashtag or numeric tag and then go through each one copying
the numbers individually.

I too have run across this… I use simple logic.

Which one seems to be more accurate. (ie, tombstone with correct dates, burial
location[does it correlate with SSDI], and sometimes I look at siblings, to see
where there were buried.)

Unfortunately you have to choose ONE memorial number.

What happens when a FAG number is deleted in Find a Grave after its been logged

I am not worried about all this but I do have some 6000 FAG numbers in events

I would use a text editor to look inside the Gedcom file and see if there is a
path used for the links, or just a filename. Then in your TNG settings, see if
that meshes with the path in your Photo Folder setting (and the actual folder,
of course).

Also, for docs, I had to edit the GEDCOM file created by Legacy to replace

Again, a question. Version 8.0.0.595. Maybe more for the German list.

I created a gedcom file: gedcom 5.5.1 UTF8 and uploaded it via filezilla
(forced UTF8) to a TNG-Website ( German UTF8). All the "Umlaute" (umlaut is the
name of the two small dots above the letters A, O, and U in German
 .) were wrong. (like

Rüdiger-).

Before I used creating a gedcom 5.5.1 and ANSI. There everything was correct.
But I wanted to change to UTF8. What do I do wrong again? Or does it not work
in Legacy?

Maybe one of you knows how to do properly.

Hi Cathy (and everyone else :-),

A few days ago, I opened a backup file from a zip, I then shut Legacy down
after looking, re-opened Legacy thinking that it would open to the correct file
that I set in Options/Customize/1.2 but I just checked and see that my setting
changed without any input from me, and Legacy opened the temporary file
instead, which I've been using without realizing for the past few days. I
changed it months ago from "open last used family file automatically" to
"always open this file" but see it reverted back to the former - how does that
happen? I notice other settings change periodically also.

Needless to say, I've been working with a temporary file from the zip folder. I
tried to fix it using your instructions from January about doing a Save As (If
you ever notice your file is in a temp folder again (on the Legacy Title bar),
get it out immediately using Save As and choosing a sensible folder to save it
into), and then doing a Restore. No matter what I've tried (too confused to
keep track of everything I've done), the name of my file still has Temp in it -
\AppData\Local\Temp\Temp1_Family 2017 2017-03-22 5.54.09 PM.zip\Mansa &
Quintas.fdb.

Before I mess up more, HELP!

Thank you in advance!

The Legacy backup is the equivalent of you copying your Word document to
another drive or folder after you've closed Word.
It's insurance. You need it if your computer crashes (and then it's only useful
if it's been saved off your computer to an external drive or to a folder on
your computer that has synced to the cloud). You also need it if in your next
session using Legacy you do something stupid and the quickest fix is to start
again from where you were last time you used Legacy.
You use a Legacy backup from within Legacy. You go to File - Restore.

Does that help?

Thank you very much Cathy. Seems that Legacy saves automatically as I go along,
unlike MS Word for example, where CTRL+S is required. I think that's where I
went awry, thinking I had to "save". A backup in Legacy is a "save" but not the
same as MS Word. Not sure I'm making any sense, since I'm still just a tad
confused.

Thanks again,

No, you only need enter it in one place, but you have the choice of using the
Location field or the Burial Address field. It sounds as though you are using
the Location field, which is fine. (It's what I prefer because I think it it

Assuming you have used the Location field (ie the one next to Burial Date on
the Information page, when you open the Master Location list you have 2

will be sorted in reverse order, so you will have State first and Cemetery name

Cemetery Names at the start of each location.

When you find the one you want, click the Show List button.

2017-01-03 Thread Henry T. Peterson Jr.
Brian and Bill

There is a free account option.
https://secure.ancestry.com/Register?oldPath=/register/guestregistration.aspx

But, I don't know if you can view public trees.
I know that MOST of the searches and all of the "Hinting" is off limits until
you begin to pay.

I do not have an account with Ancestry.com. Using the link you provided I got a
"Sign In to Ancestry" screen instead of viewing the person. On that basis it
looks like Ancestry will not let anyone without an account view public trees. I
did not bother going beyond that to see if there is a Free account option.

An example for James Murphree might be listed as:

Murphree Genealogical Association, "Murphree Genealogical Association
Database," database, Murphree Genealogical Association
(http://www.murphree.us/index.html : accessed 13 November 2016), Entry for
James Murphree.

I know there are many other ways to document.

But I know you can NEVER include the entire document as your source.

Subject: [LegacyUG] How to source a ,docx document

I need to source a .docx document. It is available from the
Murphree Genealogical Association's website
http://www.murphree.us/ .

The document can *not* be used on-line due to its size of 5.4 MB and length
of 3,818 pages.

On the website, the document is referred to as the Murphree
Genealogical Association Database, (July 2015 Edition). As to the author, we
are shown this: "This official MGA database is available for download,
thanks to the work of the MGA Genealogist & Historian, Bruce Jordan, and the
Murphree Newsletter Editor, Linda Jordan."

Further, we are told, "Because of the massive size of the
database, it will be updated only annually, so additions will not be made
immediately."

So, I know it is a word document, it is updated
annually, and the people putting it together may change.

I would like to have some help on how to source this
document. It is an invaluable resource for my wife's family.

Thank you.

My sister was creating her husband's tree with Family Tree Maker but a
couple of years ago I persuaded her to buy Legacy and she started to "play
around" with it to learn the program. She then had to give up research
because of needing to care for an elderly relative. Now she wants to return
to her research, but she has installed Windows 10 on her laptop and finds
that FTM will not run, nor re-install from the disks she has.

Is there a LUGger who also uses FTM who would be willing to receive my
sister's FTM tree (can e-mail or Dropbox) and export it to a GEDCOM for
importing into Legacy? (Or better still, I think, import it into Legacy and
return the Legacy file.)

Please reply by e-mail to me. Thanks in anticipation.

Re: [LegacyUG] Slow Down???

2016-03-28 Thread Henry T. Peterson Jr.
Joseph and Brian

A very large database does have more demands on any program. That being
said "Legacy handles large files better than any other genealogy program."
Resources are being put the test. So, you need more memory (I use 8GB Ram)
and still patience is the key word here. Just wait when it is finish things
just go better.

My database is around 478,000 and file size is around 505 gigabytes. (I may
be soon getting near the limits)[too many other variables]
I do "Compact file" first [about 1:45]
Then "File Maintenance" [about 10:30]
Ken suggested this method because my file is so huge.

If you try you file on other programs, you will see how sluggish they
operate and then appreciate Legacy even more.
Yes, I too hope that in the future Legacy will speed up, but those choices
are made by someone above my pay grade.
Best of luck
Henry

I experience the same slowdown symptoms you wrote about, but only with my
larger databases. The check/repair process took about 6 minutes to complete
before the latest update, but now it takes about 9 minutes -- every time. I
also have tried to reduce unnecessary processes, and so forth, but it has
not improved the situation. Also, even when entering data, there will be a
half-second or so lag between the mouse click, and the action. It's like
Legacy's (or something's) processes are slogging through molasses during
cold temperatures. :-)

I should admit that the largest database I speak of has a little over
180,000 records, but it still seems quite frustrating when waiting so long
to get the check/repair to finish. I'm using Windows 10 now, and so far,
I'm not able to see any improvement significant enough to confirm the claim
that Windows 10 is an update to anything we had before.

On the other hand, Legacy is a super wonderful program, slowdowns or not, I
don't mean to fuss about this issue, but naturally hope there is something
that might be done that will help.

TO EVERYONE PLEASE READ THIS!!!

While most of us have simply been deleting all of the "bogus" messages we
have been receiving, there is a quick fix for getting your account setup
again the way you want it. Just go to the Legacy User Group List manager
webpage. Link is below:

*
http://legacyusers.com/mailman/listinfo/legacyusergroup_legacyusers.com

Once there, if you don't see the Log in with a box for your email in it,
click on the "Log in" button and enter only your email address and then
click on the Log in button again. You'll get an error message at the top of
the page but don't worry about it. Then, click on the Password Reminder
button that is down the page a ways. You will probably get another error
message but again, don't worry about it. A short while late you should see
your password reminder message in your email with your "NEW" password. Go
back to the Legacy User Group list webpage and then log in with the password
that was in your email. That will get you back to where you can then change
your password and adjust your list settings to whatever you want them to be.
Mine had not changed so it appears only the password was changed with the
move to the new server.

Good luck,

Don

Go to Options-Customize

Choose Locations Tab

Next Look at the Default Location of family files

THAT is where to file you are using should be located.

This if from Legacy 7.5 (which I believe is the same as in Version 6.0)

Move the most up to date file to that location using file manager.

Good luck

safely delete that "stray" link on my desktop? I only want ONE way to access
Legacy.

Oh dear. I am even more confused. Even though I have been using computers since
the mid-80's and consider myself fairly tech savvy, sometimes I wonder what
made me think I could successfully use and understand a program so robust as
Legacy. I want to be very careful with what I do next, because I believe all my
data was intact and in the places where I expected it to be just prior to
entering the death information about my father-in-law a couple of days ago. So,
I think that maybe if I ask my questions one at a time, I will better be able
to understand what I need to do to move forward with a clear understanding (and
if I need to manually re-enter the info about my FIL, that's no big deal). So,
once I open the file that was up to date prior to the FIL data, THAT is the way
I would want to save it, going forward.

I'm not even sure if I am making sense. But, at the foundational level, I need
to know if what I have understood (and has worked for me) for years is correct
(for v 6):

I understood that Legacy saves data on the fly (while I am working and when I
exit), automatically. It was my understanding that data saves in c:\Legacy\Data
and that within that folder, the file is familytreewip.fdb. IN ADDITION to
that, and as an extra precaution, when I exit, I am asked if I want to backup.
I always understood that to be EXTRA backup--it is at that point that I name
the file and point it to My Documents folder, and I name it with the date; it
is a zip file. So, first I need to know if those two things are correct. (I
have made myself a note, years ago, that if I ever need to reinstall Legacy, it
would know to look on C:\Legacy for my data. That has always worked for me.)

Meanwhile, I do not know how or when, there is a link on my desktop that I
believe is basically a shortcut to my data, as when I right click on it, it
says familytreewip.fdb. (A few years ago, when I had trouble getting Legacy 6
to work with my new Windows 7, someone in this group helped meit may have
been in that process that the link got put on my desktop. I have never used it
to open Legacy--I have always used the software icon, to my knowledge.)

It almost seems to me like there are two ways to access Legacy on my laptop:
one, the Legacy 6.0 icon, which when hovering over, says, Location: Legacy
(C:\Legacy) and then there is this link that is there that I have never
knowingly used, that is labeled familytreewip.fdb but when hovering over says
Type: Legacy Genealogy Software, 12.7 MB, and has today's date as the date
modified (because I opened Legacy with that icon awhile ago when I realized it
was there).

While in Charting Companion, noticing that it was not using the most recent
data about my FIL, I saw a reference to two locations for the data, one being
my desktop.

So now, if I open Legacy by clicking on the desktop link, it does have the most
recent info about my FIL's death, but it does not have the information about my
mother's death, two years ago.

I do not want to merge data or do anything extreme, because I think all was
well until entering FIL's data a couple of days ago. So, I could open the file
from the C:\Legacy\Data location of the file, and then manually re-enter the
FIL data. BUT before I do that, I need to understand where my data is going
(how to I find the default location for my file), and I would then want to make
sure I never use that desktop link again.

I am so sorry that I cannot seem to express my question in a concise and
reasonable manner. I so appreciate everyone's efforts to help me, I just don't
like using something that I don't have at least a rudimentary grasp on how it
works, in terms of data safety. I thought I had it, but sure don't understand
what just happened!

If anyone is brave enough to jump into my confusion again, I do truly
appreciate it.

When I add a USA based location for birth, death or marriage events I usually
list the city, county, state and USA in the location field.
However my son married his wife in a small town in Alaska near Glacier Bay
National Park that does not belong to any county. The town, Gustavus is a part
of what is known as the "Hoonah-Angoon Census Area".

Of course when I enter that Legacy tells me no such county in Alaska exists.
Would it still be appropriate to enter that in the County field or should it
just be left blank?

I agree. It’s not only the burial pictures but pictures assigned to birth and
death events as well. For some strange reason, Legacy has never included these
“vital events” pictures in reports but they remain locked up to be viewed only
from within the Legacy program. Shout loud enough and long enough and we might
get some changes without having to resort to work-arounds.

Why should we have to go through all this when there is already a notes field

To further elaborate on what Mike said, you can create a User Defined Event
by simply clicking on the ADD button on the Individual Information screen.
Then just type in the name of the Event that you wish to add, such as
Cemetery. You can further specify what fields you want to appear in this
event or just keep the default Description, Date, and Place. When you want to
do that for another individual, the event name of Cemetery will already be in
the Master List (so if you start to type Cem, the word Cemetery will
probably automatically appear as your choice.

Once that Event has been created, you can add the picture that you want,
location, addition notes, etc., just like any other event. Make sure you
check out the Edit Event Sentence Definition... button at the bottom to
make sure Legacy will say what you want it to say on your output pages.

When you go to create your web pages (Internet tab), make sure you select
Individual Events on the WHAT tab. But just like any other event, Legacy
limits itself to only one preferred picture per event even though you can
attach multiple pictures to any single event. There is a work-around to this
issue also but it gets a little messy by creating another event called
Photo. That comes in handy when you want to publish more than one photo of
an individual such as infant, young adult, mature adult, etc. You should now
understand how adding these user defined events can help publish your
additional info for web pages that the built-in events in Legacy won't
 normally do.

One currently existing downside of these Cemetery Defined Events (and
probably any other user defined event), is that Tech Support has just
confirmed to me that there is a problem with performing search operations on
the Date field, especially in looking for empty date fields. It has been
added to the Bug Tracker list and will be fixed in a future update. No big
 deal if you never have to do such detailed searches on your Cemetery Events;
just use them as designed and they'll appear on your web pages looking
something like Noted events in his life were:. From there you'll see a
chronological listing of events you've added for a person such as census,
residence, military, probate, obituary, and cemetery.

My gggrandfather was born in Feb 1814. His supposed father died before Jan
1812. How do I unlink from the father but not the mother? When I try to
unlink it will only let me unlink both. Do I do this then link back to the
mother, or is there a simpler way?

Is anyone else finding that is takes forever to export data as a GEDCOM file?

I have 85,000 individuals in my database and version 7 would take between 5 and
10 minutes to create a GEDCOM file for uploading to my website. V8 is taking
nearly 2 hours to complete the same task. Nothing has changed on my computer
(Windows 7) so why is it taking so long.
Everything else, especially the maps, has been speeded up dramatically and
generally I am very pleased with V8 but exporting GEDCOM files is very
important to me and I need speed in this department too!

You may get by doing that with some small file.

But, sooner or later some internet clitch or server error will grieve you.

I know that dropbox is great.

I prefer it over skydrive and google drive.

Large files take awhile to transfer…….

User beware..

Henry,

I am not sure why you say ‘Always copy the file on your hard drive to Drop box
folder to have a backup”. That is exactly what Dropbox is doing automatically.
Dropbox is a folder on your local drive, and anything done in the local Dropbox
folder is replicated to the Dropbox server, and other linked computers if so
configured.

So, having your working Legacy file in Dropbox works just fine. Legacy will be
working with a local file.

If you are talking about the zip backup file, as opposed to the working file,
you can certainly back that up to Dropbox. But again, the file is first being
written to the Dropbox folder on your local hard drive, and then being
replicated up to the Dropbox server.

Families app is great

I have a very large Legacy file.403,000 plus and over 6600 pictures. Anyway
itunes transfer only takes 15-20 minutes. (wi-fi takes longer)

Because my file is huge functionality slows down but the average user can
zoom through and the app is great. Of course the iPad has a

larger screen and keyboard so input is easier.

Good luck

I'm going to the family history library tomorrow and I realize I should have
considered this before butnow I'm in a bit of a hurry.

I used to use a Legacy add on of some sort on a palm device and I don't even
know what I've done with that it's been so long since I used it plus I've
been planning to get families for Legacy anyway so I can use it on my phone.

My question is, for your users of the Families app, how long does it take
you to get your Legacy file synced with the app? Is there a big learning
curve? I just don't know if I'm going to be able to get it done in the
morning before we leave if it's not simple. If it's a little time
intensive, I will wait and just print out some FGS for the families I know
that I need.

Thanks for your comments, if anyone sees this tonight :-) Kathy

Re: [LegacyUG] Missing Pictures AND DATA AND ERROR LOG FILE

2011-09-04 Thread Henry T. Peterson Jr.
This reply is in fact meant to help all of you with these various issues. So
please read and take to heart an earnest attempt to resolve your issues.

I have 4 computers using Windows 7 (one of those is a 64-bit system. My
database contains over 400,000 individuals and over 6,000 pictures)

When you install Legacy you can install it in any directory you want..(ie,
C:\Legacy7\)
All the files in the default folders as they were in Windows XP and
everything in Legacy will function.

I add, copy, move, backup, paste, rename, and all basic functions from one
to another (although you will have to copy to a public folder then move to
the actual folder)

I use dropbox for backup...not for database. But, I have on hundreds of
occasions restored from these backups in dropbox to offsite computers at
work, etc. I have never lost data, pictures, link to pictures, had errors
writing to log files...

Legacy is stable...and the testing methods are not perfect...but, if
everyone does backups daily you may never have totally messed up data.

I am rambling, but all is with good intent...please contact me off list I
will try to guide you. Henry hpete...@cox.net

I have thousands of lost pictures and manually attaching them will take

I have searched the archives and haven't found a work-a-round for this
