I believe at that time, the soldier would have needed the permission of his

permission wasn't forthcoming until later, hence the second marriage.

This is otherwise known as a Digest and is not available on this list. A Digest
may seem like a good idea but is usually misused by those who receive it. A
Digest accumulates several messages over a period of time and then sends a
single message out containing the bodies of the accumulated messages. This is
where the misuse occurs, because Digest receivers (like some of us normal
receivers) generally forget to trim their replies and end up including the whole
of the Digest, much to the ire of us normal receivers.

I got caught on that looking for Milton in Kent. There is a
parish called Milton next to Gravesend and another just north of Sittingbourne,
about 15 miles east, which is the name for the Milton Registration District. I
got the wrong one!!

I enter Registration Districts as, e.g., Milton Registration District/RD. No
need for any county or country information as they only occur in the UK. As for
'pinning' them to a map, you can use Family Search
to display a map of the UK with all the
Registration Districts superimposed on the counties. Only problem is that it
shows the districts as they were in 1851 :-) I think it holds pretty well for
the 19th century if you couple it with the information on GENUKI.

Adding to what Jenny has said:

Civil events - I use the name of the Registration District with a suffix of RD.
Occasionally, I'll add the county as well. For example, I have relatives born
and bred in Wiveton in Norfolk, England. For Civil Events. I would use
Walsingham RD or Walsingham RD, Norfolk. I will, sometimes, add the parish, so
that I get Wiveton, Walsingham RD, Norfolk. This is used for Births, Marriages
and Deaths.

Church events - generally follow a standard of parish, village, county, country.
Hence: St Mary the Virgin, Wiveton, Norfolk, England. This gets used for
baptisms/christenings, marriages and burials.

Censuses - a slightly different standard that follows what is recorded for each
census: place, county, country. Sometimes in the larger towns or cities, I would
add a civil parish (again taken from the census).

I have no information whatsoever as to what their parents' names were, so in

In a past existence (Legacy 7.5) it was possible, with a parent-less person on
show in the Family tab, to double-click on the empty parents and have the
program 'create' blank parents. You could then add a sibling to the original,

I would have thought that this was a Windows restriction and not a Legacy
problem. Windows has a list of disallows characters and your Alt-0150 is not on
that list. It does say that not all filename strings are valid on all file
systems. This becomes important when moving files between, say, Windows and a Mac.

This paragraph might cast some light (from
)

Use any character in the current code page for a name, including Unicode
characters and characters in the extended character set (128–255), except for
the following:

The following reserved characters:
< (less than)
> (greater than)
: (colon)
" (double quote)
/ (forward slash)
\ (backslash)
| (vertical bar or pipe)
? (question mark)
* (asterisk)

Your Alt-0150 might only be really valid on a pure Unicode system.

One question though: What software did you use for the ZIP/UNZIP? Software that
expects 'normal' filenames might have problems with 'exotic' characters.

wouldn't then purchase the software, but simply pay a monthly subscription to
use it. In all probability, keeping the data on your PC would incur massive
costs as the data flows back and forth. It then becomes cheaper to keep the data
on the website and you've lost the ultimate ownership of it. Just like using
Ancestry's software to maintain a tree on their website.

I don't understand what you're mumbling about. Any window can be moved to
another position to reveal more of what it's covering. In general, a window
moved to a new place will retain that new position when it's next opened.

In my view, the Census is an Event. The Schedules (or documentation) produced

Add a fictitious father and link him as a child to both the grandparents and the
children to him. Then, when you sort things out, you'll be able to merge him
with the real father and the kids will go with the merge.

I don't think you specifically hijacked the thread. It was the person you
replied to.

People don't understand that every email carries a unique reference number. This
is used when you reply to the email so that email readers (as opposed to
browsers) can link messages together and so form a thread. This is different to
how a browser sees a thread. Browsers are dumb and assume everything with the
same Subject line belongs to the same thread.

The OP made the original mistake by hitting reply, and then clearing out
everything: subject and content. Unfortunately her message still links back to
the one she replied to: hence the hijacking. You simply, and inadvertently,
compounded the problem by replying to her message thus carrying on the linkage
back to the thread which was hijacked.

There are always two options when you want to send an email: replying and
writing. Writing starts a new thread; Replying continues an existing thread.

There you are! Using Cloud storage for working files is always going to be
problematic. You can not guarantee that temporary (the lock file in this case)
files do not get copied to the Cloud whilst you're working locally. Then, when
you finish, Google Drive notices that the lock file has gone from your PC and
assumes the file should be retrieved from the Cloud. Next time you use the
program, the presence of the lock file leads the program (Access really) to
assume the file is already open.

Addendum.

Check the Google Drive Preferences. There's a statement that reads Files in
Google Drive that are not in a folder will always sync To me, it looks like
your files are at the root of the Google Drive so will always sync. Create a
folder in Google Drive to hold your Legacy files and it's probably possible to
control what is and what isn't synch'ed to the Cloud.

to delete or remove it? The numbers are in the low thousands, so even making
new gedcoms and using a text editor isn't real appealing unless
find-and-replace-all could be used to quietly disable the relevant tag(s).

My suggestion would be to download and install a much earlier version of Legacy
and use that to turn the Temple stuff off. Then, the saved file (hopefully
without Temple) could be read by a recent version of Legacy and hopefully there
will be no Temple data in the file.

Whilst saying that I thought it bad practice to use the Cloud as a storage
medium, this should have been directed at not using the Cloud to store your
Family DataBase file. These online storage facilities are best suited to files
that do not change very much: such as images. The FDB files can be kept online,
in a way, simply by making your OneDrive folder the target for Backups. You then
get a copy of the backup on your local disk and another one replicated in the
Cloud.

The concept that using One Drive or Dropbox for your Legacy Family is
'operating with cloud based storage' is inaccurate. These products have a one
instance of the file on your local computer, and another instance up in the
cloud. There will be additional instances on other computers if you have
 others connected to the account.

When you are using Legacy, you are operating on the local file on your PC,
and the 'cloud copy' is updated subsequent to the local copy. You can
continue to use Legacy even if you have no live internet connection.

I see absolutely no problem using One Drive for the main family file.

Mike, what do you see as the downside of using One Drive (or it's cousins) as
 the family file location.

Because as you make changes to the family file, OneDrive will try to upload each
change as it happens. Each time it uploads, it copies the whole file, not just
what was changed. To work like this you need fast broadband upload capability (I
don't think there's much of that around) most upload speeds are a maximum of
half the download or rated line speed. Another thing to be thrown into the
calculation: capped or uncapped.

Not good practice. I would treat OneDrive purely as a backup medium and keep
images on the PC.

I can achieve what you're trying to do using version 7.5 and I suspect the
process might be the same on version 8.0 but I can't tell since I only have the
vanilla options which don't include the Picture Centre.

Using the Browse button (if there is such a thing) on the Picture Centre, you
can select a folder from which to pick images. In order to use your OneDrive

it is found at

From the 7.5 Help file - topic = Picture Centre

The U column to the left of the file names indicates whether or not each picture

picture in that folder has been attached to someone. The - means that file name
has been attached to someone but from a different picture folder. For example,
you may be looking at grandpa.bmp in the Legacy\Pictures folder but another file
called grandpa.bmp in the Legacy\Reunion\Pictures folder is currently being used
somewhere in your file. (You should be careful not to have different picture
files with the same name located in different folders. It will surely confuse

Two separate problems. Firstly, the fact that your remote resources 'disappear'

Secondly, the fact that Legacy 'forgets' a networked resource if it isn't

ever designed with networked files in mind in the first place.

So, report a bug using the website accessed from the Legacy Home tab - bottom

Report doesn't appear to be a great deal of use really, since it just gives the
totals of people with the same surname and a year range.

Re: [LegacyUG] To ask your question

Where is the subject line I really don't understand this

An email is like a letter. It has an envelope and the contents. The Envelope
contains the email address of where the message is being sent to and the address
of the person sending it. It also (and this is debatable) contains the one-line
Subject of the message. The contents is your verbiage.

I see you're using gmail as an email address, and from the contents of your
earlier messages, it is not clear whether you're using a browser logged into
GMail or an offline email client. I suspect the former. In which case, when you
click on the Compose button from within gmail, you're shown a window that has
the title New Message. Below that are two of the aforementioned envelope
fields: the To Address and the Subject. The other envelope fields are
automatically filled in for you. Below the Subject is where the Contents go,
Now, the Subject is important because it tells people concisely (or should do)
what your message is all about. Get it wrong and people are likely to ignore
you.

One other thing to mention is the thorny subject of Message Threading: this is
the grouping of related messages and their replies. Now, Google likes to think
that every message that has the same Subject line belongs to the same thread.
This is not strictly correct according to the Internet Standards, but when did
agreed standards ever bother Google or Microsoft. If you start a new message by
taking an existing message, changing the subject and replacing the contents with
your own, your message is not the start of a new thread: it's actually another
reply in the thread to which the starter message belongs to.

So, don't confuse 'Compose' with 'Reply'. The first starts a new thread, the
latter continues an existing one.

 Use them consistently.

Agreed! Treat them as just examples of what can be done.

Switch off the option to verify US counties and states.
