Another advantage to Facebook is that you can edit your posts if you make a

[LegacyUG] Facebook

2020-05-12 Thread Michele Lewis
I encourage you to join our Legacy User Group on Facebook. I know there are
some of you that say there is no way you will ever get on Facebook but you can
join Facebook and set your privacy so that you won’t get friend requests and no
one can see what you post. The group itself is private so anything you post
there isn’t seen by anyone except the other group members.

You are missing a lot of stuff by not being there. I can’t cross post
everything that I post there and I post quite a bit. I readily admit that my
attention is with the Facebook group because I can do so many more things there
than I can here.

You can use screenshots and video clips which you can’t do here. You can
explain a problem better with a screenshot and you can understand solutions to
problems better as well with screenshots.

I (and others) can upload files. For example, periodically I upload a pdf that
has clickable links to all of the Tuesday's Tips from the Legacy
Newsletter/Blog. John Lisle upload a great series with how to work with the
custom geo code files in Legacy.

The Facebook group is searchable and you can also use hashtags. You will see
announcements from the staff when we need to get important information out.
All events and webinars are announced to give you a heads up without having to
monitor the webinar webpage. When an update is released it is announced here
immediately.

Another advantage, which I honestly wish I didn't have to use, I and the other
admins/moderators can delete posts. I can also stop the commenting on a post if
I need to. On the mailing list if someone posts something against the rules
there isn't much I can do about it. I can remove the person but the posts stay
and conversations go on and on that really need to be nipped. Even when I tell
people enough is enough it goes on. That doesn't happen on Facebook.

I monitor the list pretty much all of my waking hours. We have beta testers and
power users that are monitoring the list when I actually sleep 

As of right now this mailing list has 1531 member. The Facebook group has
21,941. The Facebook group has 5 administrators and 2 moderators. It is also
monitored by several staff members and some of our top beta testers and
translators.

I hope I see more of you there.

[LegacyUG] From the staff

>From the staff...

One of the rules of this group is that "We do not allow bashing of ANY
genealogy software programs or ANY genealogy websites." I am glad Brian
stepped in and reined in the conversation.

General advice, when you access/use ANY website read their TERMS OF USE. If
you are not sure what "terms of use" means then I suggest you go to
https://www.legalgenealogist.com/ This is the website/blog of Judy Russell
(the Legal Genealogist) who is one of our webinar speakers. You can search
her blog for "terms of use" and "terms of service." She has written about it
many times.

This is a friendly reminder/warning. If you come here to trash ANY genealogy
software program or ANY genealogy website you will be unsubscribed from the
group.

Most email clients will allow you to create folders and then create "rules"
telling the email client to send all emails from a certain sender to this
folder. You can also make rules for certain subject lines etc.

Many of my Legacy emails are going in to the Junk email folder.

In looking at the Help file I can't find any assistance with this problem.

I have not had this problem with previous lap-tops so I suspect it happened
in transferring to this new laptop.

I guess it really isn't a Legacy problem, but advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: [LegacyUG] Announcement from the staff

2020-02-03 Thread Michele Lewis
All is well. It had nothing to do with a Windows update per se. We updated our
Windows security certificates and that can cause antivirus programs to flag the
program as a problem because they don’t recognize the updated certificates
right away.

If you make sure that all Windows programs are shut down before you install,
and you RIGHT click the installation file and RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR chances are
your antivirus will let it pass the first time. If you are installing through
the program just make sure you have all other Windows programs shut down. This
avoids the DLL error that some were getting.

If your antivirus still gives you a warning simply add the Legacy installation
file as an exception to your antivirus.

Hi everyone

Just wondering how to update Legacy without issue. It seems there are a few
problems.

Does anyone know if Microsoft has done the update as mentioned in the email
below?

Do I need to run the update from the legacy tab. Close down anti virus and any
other windows open? Will this be ok or are there still issues.

I would appreciate guidance with this update.

Many thanks

IT experts recommend waiting until AFTER the update because it will change so
many things.

What doom awaits tomorrow, the 26th?

[LegacyUG] Legacy User Group Monthly Reminder

2020-02-03 Thread Michele Lewis
Legacy User Group Monthly Reminder

* Please help us keep the Legacy User Group Email List friendly, helpful,
and fun.

* We do not allow attachments or embedded images because we have users that
are on dial up or have metered connections. Also, please send your emails
using plain text. Some users are using email clients that can't "see" HTML
or RichText so they end up with garbled emails.

* Please create a new email to legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com to start a
new thread (topic). DO NOT just hit Reply and change the Subject line. When
replying to an ongoing conversation, please trim your messages so that only
the most current earlier responses are included.

* Please keep the conversation confined to the Legacy program and to the
add-ons that work with Legacy. Since we have a direct sync to FamilySearch,
FamilySearch questions are usually fair game. You can post questions about
MyHeritage if your question relates to Legacy in some way. If you are having
a problem with MyHeritage please email their tech support at
supp...@myheritage.com.

* We do not allow bashing of ANY genealogy software programs or ANY
genealogy websites.

* Several Legacy staff members and beta testers monitor this list and they
may advise you to email supp...@legacyfamilytree.com for more complex
technical support issues or ask you to send enhancement requests here
https://legacyfamilytree.com/Suggest.asp The LUG email list is more for "How
do I... in Legacy?" and for tips that will help other users.

* Keep up to date with what's going on at Legacy by subscribing to our
newsletter at https://legacyfamilytree.com/subscribe.asp. You can also click
over to the Legacy Home tab to see hot links to all of the latest news
articles and announcements in Legacy itself.

* Don't forget that you can also join the Legacy User Group Facebook page
for even more interaction with the staff, beta testers, translators, and
other users https://www.facebook.com/groups/LegacyUserGroup/

* If you ever want to unsubscribe from the LUG email list, there is a link
at the bottom of every email that you can use

* If you have any problems concerning the Legacy User Group List you can

like the regular individual advance tagging.

Re: [LegacyUG] New feature!

2020-01-24 Thread Michele Lewis
If you turn off all running programs and then RIGHT click the installation file
and select Run as Administrator this will stop 99% of the problems. If you
update through the program itself (Legacy home tab) all you need to do is make
sure that all running programs are off.

Turning off all other programs avoids the DLL conflict issue.

Bear in mind that what you are seeing here are posts from the *very few* who
have had problems compared to the hundreds (thousands probably) who have
updated without issues and are getting on with their lives.

[LegacyUG] Those using previous versions

2020-01-22 Thread Michele Lewis
Those using previous version of Legacy (8 and earlier). You will not be
updating. This will probably not be a problem for you guys. If your
antivirus software gives you a fit you will need to add all of the Legacy
.exe files as exceptions. Worst case scenario would be that your antivirus
won't let you override. If that is the case, you will have to turn your
antivirus off while using Legacy or change antivirus programs. I doubt that
any of this will be necessary.

Re: [LegacyUG] Announcement from the staff

2020-01-22 Thread Michele Lewis
Some anti-viruses are very aggressive when it comes to new certificates.
They won’t allow an install until a certain number of downloads have
already taken place. You will have to disable Norton just long enough to
get the download on your computer and then crank it right back up.

Re: [LegacyUG] 1935

2020-01-14 Thread Michele Lewis
That is the answer to the question, “Where were you living in 1935?“ When
it says same place that means that wherever they were living in 1940 they
were also living in that same place in 1935.

[LegacyUG] Happy New Year!

2020-01-01 Thread Michele Lewis
Happy New Year from the Legacy staff 

Legacy User Group Monthly Reminder

1) Please help us keep the Legacy User Group Email List friendly, helpful, and
fun.

2) We do not allow attachments or embedded images because we have users that
are on dial up or have metered connections. Also, please send your emails using
plain text. Some users are using email clients that can't "see" HTML or
RichText so they end up with garbled emails.

3) Please create a new email to LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com to start a new
thread (topic). DO NOT just hit Reply and change the Subject line. When
replying to an ongoing conversation, please trim your messages so that only the
most current earlier responses are included.

4) Please keep the conversation confined to the Legacy program and to the
add-ons that work with Legacy. Since we have a direct sync to FamilySearch,
FamilySearch questions are usually fair game. You can post questions about
MyHeritage if your question relates to Legacy in some way. If you are having a
problem with MyHeritage please email their tech support at
supp...@myheritage.com

5) Several Legacy staff members and beta testers monitor this list and they may
advise you to email supp...@legacyfamilytree.com for more complex technical
support issues or ask you to send enhancement requests here
https://legacyfamilytree.com/Suggest.asp The LUG email list is more for "How
do I... in Legacy?" and for tips that will help other users.

6) Keep up to date with what's going on at Legacy by subscribing to our
newsletter at https://legacyfamilytree.com/subscribe.asp You can also click
over to the Legacy Home tab to see hot links to all of the latest news articles

Legacy will not be able to handle Unicode characters until Legacy is
transferred over to a new programming language/platform and built from the
ground up.

Legacy User Group Monthly Reminder

1) Please help us keep the Legacy User Group Email List friendly, helpful,
and fun.

2) We do not allow attachments or embedded images because we have users that
are on dial up or have metered connections. Also, please send your emails
using plain text. Some users are using email clients that can't "see" HTML
or RichText so they end up with garbled emails.

3) Please create a new email to LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com to start a
new thread (topic). DO NOT just hit Reply and change the Subject line. When
replying to an ongoing conversation, please trim your messages so that only
the most current earlier responses are included.

4) Please keep the conversation confined to the Legacy program and to the
add-ons that work with Legacy. Since we have a direct sync to FamilySearch,
FamilySearch questions are usually fair game. You can post questions about
MyHeritage if your question relates to Legacy in some way. If you are having
a problem with MyHeritage please email their tech support at

[LegacyUG] A funny in the Help File

2019-06-14 Thread Michele Lewis
Dave, one of the original owners of Millennia who created Legacy, is the one
ultimately responsible for our Help File. Sometimes I find something in the
Help File that I never noticed before. Dave has quite the sense of humor 藍藍藍

I just pulled up the article on backing up your family file and found this
smack dab in the middle of the paragraph...

"Making regular backup copies of your Family File information is essential, yet
is often taken for granted or ignored by many. Backups are a fundamental part
of using a computer. If you never make backups and your hard drive fails,
Legacy Technical Support cannot help you put Humpty Dumpty back together again.
If you do make backups, you will be extremely happy someday and maybe even
famous. More than one lowly family historian has been whisked off on a
fantastic vacation by other family members after saving their vital
genealogical information."

Sometimes I wonder about him 藍藍藍

Hi Michele I have had great response from you with previous questions and thank
for it. But what is happening now is appalling. We are getting no explanation
from my heritage as to why things are going wrong, why did they have to change
their API for example no explanation given. I think the users of Legacy deserve
much better answers. The Map problem is a laugh while other companies have no
problems to my knowledge, yet there is no real explanation as to what is
happening apart from soft changing coding. what stage are the programmers
at ,are they near fixing it or miles away from it, Why is it taking so long
surely they can give us some kind of info to help us to be patient. It has been
a long time now. Sadly I have been looking at other programmes with maps
considering moving, never dreamed I would do this as I had been very happy with
Legacy. Maps was very important to me as I am sure to others as well. But it is
getting very frustrating, waiting, waiting, waiting but no news of any kind.

The problem with the Hints has nothing to do with the server. MyHeritage had an
API (programming code) change on their side which caused us to have to make a

Don't ask me why it is taking so long. Most companies who lose a server
will get it back either directly, or through a Disaster Recovery

Re: [LegacyUG] Backing up to the cloud

2019-06-03 Thread Michele Lewis
The problem with the Hints has nothing to do with the server. MyHeritage
had an API (programming code) change on their side which caused us to have
to make a code change on our side.

The Legacy download IS housed on the broken server so we parked a copy on
the Amazon server that houses the Legacy webinar site and we can give
anyone who needs it a direct link to it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Anyone know of a quick way to duplicate an individual?

2019-06-02 Thread Michele Lewis
There is an enhancement request in our tracking system to be able to do
this. Sort of like a reverse
merge. As soon as we have our tracking system back up and running I will
add you as an additional requester. The programmer is in the process of
moving our tracking system over to the new server.

The update with the server will not change anything at all. This is just a

[LegacyUG] Update on the new server

2019-05-28 Thread Michele Lewis
Update on the new server 1:45 pm, 28 May 2019

MyHeritage has finished building the new server! The server has been turned
back over to the Legacy developers who are now moving everything over. This
will take quite a bit of programming and testing but we are getting there.

Re: [LegacyUG] Dna

2019-05-27 Thread Michele Lewis
Legacy is not set up to interface with other DNA. You need to use the
testing company that you used and any other places that you uploaded your
raw DNA to and work off of your match list there. You can keep your results
in Legacy by using events and/or hashtags. Are use a combination of both.

The only thing you can do with your raw DNA in regard to Legacy is to
attach the file in the person’s Media Gallery.

[LegacyUG] UPDATE on the new server and Hints

2019-05-21 Thread Michele Lewis
UPDATE on the new server and Hints (21 May 2019, 12:05 pm ET)

1) Last Friday MyHeritage let us know that the new server is in place BUT it
will take them some time to get it programmed and then to move everything
over. Progress! Until then, make sure you are backing up your file in the
"normal" way. If you need to download Legacy 9 you can use this direct link
http://downloads.familytreewebinars.com/misc/Legacy9Setup.exe

2) The beta testers have been working with the programmer that does all of
the Hints stuff and there has been progress there as well. He sent the beta
testers some replacement files with fixes in it and they are evaluating them
(they still need tweaking). However, we can't issue an update to Legacy
until the server is back online because that is the server where the
developers create the builds and then issue the updates. Progress!

[LegacyUG] Announcement from the staff

2019-05-10 Thread Michele Lewis
If you send an email to this list that is "too large" the email will be
rejected and go into a holding queue. I am sent a notification and then I go
in and clear it out. I don't read these I just delete them.

So what will cause an email to be too large?

1) If you are not sending your emails in plain text and your email has too
much HTML coding it will be rejected
2) If you have included attachments or you have embedded images into the
email (attachments and embedded images are a no no on the list

Why is this? We have people that are subscribed to this list that are on
dial up (yes it still exists), limited plans/metered connections. Keeping
the emails in plain text and with no attachments or embedded images makes it
so that they can enjoy the mailing list without taking forever for the
emails to load or taking away from their limited connection. Also, computer
viruses are commonly attached to image files sent via email.

If you sent a message and it never appears then I might have deleted it
because it got flagged.

If you want to have more flexibility then I invite you to join our Facebook
Group. We have members there that don't use FB for anything else so they
have their privacy settings ramped up and they accept no friend requests.
Works like a charm. I know that there are some of you that say you will
never get on FB and that is fine. All I am saying is that we have to keep
this email list on plain text with no attachments or embedded images so that
those people who have no other choice have a forum to connect with other
users and so that you don't inadvertently pick up a virus or malware.

[LegacyUG] Server and Hints update

2019-05-10 Thread Michele Lewis
1) Some things have already been moved to a new server (all the webinar
stuff for example) but until this process is complete, backup your files in
the normal way.

2) We have made some progress with the Hints. We have it isolated to the
MyHeritage hints so try turning just that off if you like working with Hints
instead of turning everything off. We were testing until quite late last
night.

I won't be posting updates because this group is stable (rare to get a new
member) so everyone now has the latest info.

Normally I wouldn’t comment on anything MyHeritage but I will this time. Legacy
is a completely separate entity. MyHeritage’s sales and tech support is totally
separate from ours. There is no communication between the two. We know

I wouldn't count on MyHeritage sticking to their promise of a discounted rate.
I've had to make numerous phone calls all last year and then was harassed with
4 unsolicited phone calls from the same very pushy sales rep in MyHeritage last
October until I stopped answering phone calls from myheritage. He was trying to
sell me some package deal of 5 years, and of course, he was unaware of the
discounted rate. I could go on with how my account was reverted to the basic
level once again earlier this year, but my reason for posting is what has
Legacy done about it? Does Legacy know about this?

agent who wanted me to renew at their full rates. After some discussion he
transferred me to someone who appeared to be more senior and knew about the low
lifetime subscriptions. The man confirmed my discounted rate and said he had
included this in my record for use in future years. It took some persistence
to get everything straight but did work out in the end. (We will see what
happens when my next renewal is due.)

I back up to OneDrive (I have Office 365 so I have 2TB of storage). I do use

For those using Microsoft Windows (all versions) - isn't everyone? -
OneDrive gives you 5GB (approx. 5,000MB) of storage, for free. This has been
so since 2016 (previously, it was up to 15GB for free).

See https://onedrive.live.com/about/en-au/plans/ (Australia) -
https://onedrive.live.com/about/en-us/plans/ (USA)

(the country-code is only relevant for the paid storage plans, for your
country and currency).

I haven't had a problem with OneDrive in the past 8 years. It's always
there.

There has been much talk on the Facebook Users Group about failure of Cloud
Backups in Legacy 9.0. The Legacy rep announced a few days ago that the
server which provides this service failed and has to be replaced. She did
not know how long the server would be down but she urged all users to
continue making their local media backups in the interim.

[LegacyUG] Server issues

2019-05-08 Thread Michele Lewis
This is the 4th update I have posted to the LUG List about the servers. Some
people are still posting questions about it. The difference is that on the
Facebook Group I have the ability to "pin" an announcement to the top of the
page so it is in plain sight. When I post here the message gets lost in the
other posts.

As of 7:50 am ET the process to move everything to the MyHeritage servers is
still not complete. MyHeritage has not given us an estimated time when
everything will be back in service. Right now what is being affected are the
cloud backups, form submissions (problem reports, suggestions, and address
changes), and downloads though the downloads for the older version of Legacy
are working. You can email us directly at supp...@legacyfamilytree.com
<mailto:supp...@legacyfamilytree.com> if you have a problem or a
suggestion.

[LegacyUG] Update on the server

2019-05-06 Thread Michele Lewis
Apparently moving to a new server is more of a big deal than I thought but then
again, I have no clue about such things  MyHeritage is handling the entire
process now so we have to wait for them to give us an update.

Just remember to back up your files in the normal way. The cloud storage is an
additional safeguard and shouldn’t be your main backup routine especially since
you can’t back up your media this way.

[LegacyUG] Today's Tip

2019-04-27 Thread Michele Lewis
I am copying this one over from Facebook.

TIP OF THE DAY (Legacy Staff) - Sat Edition!
My current project is a limited One-Name Study. I am compiling every Simmons
(and variants) living in South Carolina pre-1820.
I am doing this project to help break down a brick wall, but even if my
brick wall doesn't crumble, I will be publishing this project in some sort
of way and I want it to read out nice. There is no way I would let all of
this work go to waste (it is going to take me months)

Right now I am working on getting my event sentences right. So far I only
have the following events...

Residence
Occupation
Marriage License
Marriage Settlement
Marriage Bond

I have been entering marriage records and that is why I have this particular
list. I want to get these formatted correctly before I go any further.

I am telling you all of this to show you that the Legacy staff and the beta
testers are seasoned researchers that actually use Legacy. We use the
program in the same ways as you do. I have been researching for 28 years, 17
years of that at a professional level. I have also been board-certified for
2 years. I have been using Legacy for 14 years. I switched from FTM to the
free standard version of Legacy 5 and then upgraded to the deluxe version
when Legacy 6 came out. I have been working for Legacy (and now My Heritage)
for 6 years.

So on this Saturday my plans are to write these sentence definitions and
extract data from The South Carolina Historical and Genealogical Magazine
which is online from 1900-1923.

Happy hunting!

For more information about how to write event sentences, please see this
article:

Restore your most current back and give it a very unique name so that you
know which file is which. Now open your current file and the restored file
in split screen. You can then copy your deleted person from your backup file
to your working file. However, any changes that you made to this person
since the last backup will be lost.

Re: [LegacyUG] RINs and MRINS

2019-04-10 Thread Michele Lewis
I suggest you don’t include them in reports. You don’t need them and those
persons reading your reports won’t understand them.

These are autogenerated numbers that database programs need to have. Some

I definitely need to understand RINs and MRINs as I am getting ready to create
a Descendant Report - 12 generations. I do not have any of these numbers on
the names I have entered into my Legacy file. Obviously it is something that I
did not set up. And, how to these RINs and MRINs work and what are they for.

I have printed out the following, but do not always understand the directions:

Report Title Options

Renumbering RINs and MRINs - I need to number them!

Displaying RINs on Names

Descendant Report

Report Options

ARE THERE ADDITONAL REPORTS I should print to help in this process?

Since I am 80 years old and trying to 'wrap' up a lot of genealogy reports, I
have to ask for baby step information and explanations. And if you wish to
privately send me the information with your email, that would be best for me,
if I have to ask additional questions. I don't want to clutter up the Group

Thanks, Michele. I've tried the four steps, carefully, but no luck; on the
first line of the report, for the Husband and the Wife, the first line still
is 'AKA'; it was un-checked when I arrived at the 'Include' tab. I tried to

same as the previous report. Is there anything else I could try? Thanks

Hi Michelle and thank you for taking your time with me. For whatever reason,
last night it started searching where I told it to rather than the C drive.
Seems to be working fine now.

Thanks again,

Subject: [LegacyUG] Relinking media Problems and questions

Hello,

Lost my main computer and am in the process of trying to relink my documents
(jpg, gif, etc). My first problem and question goes like thisWhen letting
Legacy 9 search for my missing media on it's own, it always starts on my "C"
drive. I have nothing there and as far as I can tell, I do not have any
libraries/sources pointing to my C drive. This wouldn't be too bad except that
during the media search on the "C" drive, Legacy freezes up and I have to do a
three finger salute to close it out and start it again. This is a Windows 7
computer by the way I saw a Legacy page with instruction on this for Windows
10, didn't apply to me, so I passed it by.

Can someone tell me how to stop Legacy from searching my "C" drive?

My second question also pertains to relinking media, though I manually search
for it. When I relink a media file to a sourced event, is there any way to have
Legacy relink the same media file to other events that use the same source? It
is a PITA to have to go through and manually relink a jpg to multiple copies of
the same source.

Thank you in advance for any help here.

Re: [LegacyUG] Two paths

2019-02-27 Thread Michele Lewis
You can easily do this. Give the “child” two sets of parents and then mark both
sets as invisible until you have it figured out. You can then research both
lines and enter data. When you have your answer, you simply unlink the child
from the wrong parents and change the right parents to not invisible. The wrong
parents (and any people you have attached to them) will be in their own little
isolated tree. Chances are, they are related in some way so I wouldn’t get rid
of them. If you figure out the correct connection you can link the entire tree
back into your line.

If Legacy 8 has gone back to the free standard version (maybe the license file

I have been a user of Legacy Deluxe for a number of years. I have been quite
content with Version 8 and refused the almost daily pop-up to upgrade to
Version 9. This morning when I opened my file to add data, I notice that the
usual information did not appear in the Index and the data in some columns was
replaced by a message that it was part of the Deluxe edition, as if I did not
already have it. I also noted that my settings on the Family pages (fonts and
sizes) were changed.

How do I correct this? I have the original installation CD. Should I try
reinstalling the program? I have 25 years of research in that file and cannot
afford a screw-up.

Re: [LegacyUG] attach images to locations

2019-02-19 Thread Michele Lewis
There are some photos that you can't see in the person's individual Media
Gallery. Location photos is one. You also can't see photos that are attached
to Master Sources or Source Details. Another are marriage events. There is a
suggestions in our tracking system for the developers to change this so that
you can see all photos attached to a person in their Individual Media
Gallery. I have added you to that request.

Hi guys

Should attaching an image to a current location (via the 'locations' list
tab under Master Lists) - for example, an image of a house attached to an
address - mean that this image is then available to each iteration of this
address within my family tree on Legacy? I ask because I did this but then
can't see any attached image on a specific person page where this address is
included. Or do I have this assumption wrong?

Many thanks.

We just released an update. Two things to know real quick.

1) You will need to go to Options > Customize > View > Option 8.2. Select
your preferences and save. These have been changed back to the defaults
because Dave did a ton of work with these numbers.

2) When you first open your file, it will go through a source checking
routine. This will only happen when you open the file the first time in this
new build. It is reformatting the sources in such a way that they will
transfer to FamilySearch okay. It doesn't actually change anything that you
entered, it just makes it so FamilySearch can see the entire source and not
just the source name.

The revision history is here:

[LegacyUG] Here is a more comprehensive explanation of the update

2019-01-11 Thread Michele Lewis
I put out my announcement super quick. John Lisle wrote a more comprehensive
explanation of the update now that we have had a few minutes.

Legacy 9 Update 279
Yes, we have been promising another Legacy 9 update for days... It is here
now. Yes, it fixes the Error 62 problem with Family group Report. (I am sure
that many of you will be glad of that!)

It also fixes a number of other issues that you can see from the revision
history. I am not going to go into all of them as you can read that list,
and most are self explanatory.

What I do wish to share with you are a few very visible changes.

First, we discovered that we needed to check all of your source records as
we were finding that many users have records that are missing a field needed
by FamilySearch. It does not hurt your data, but it does make it difficult
to transfer sources properly to Legacy FamilySearch and other tools.

When you open your Family File for the first time with this update, you will
see a display where is says "Checking Sources" This may take a short while
if you have a lot of sources. Do not worry. This is not changing any of your
sources, but, after it is complete, your sources will now transfer
correctly.

Another major changes is that, in response to numerous requests, we have
done a major revision to how we handle the various IDs you see displayed
while running Legacy and that you add to reports. We have this project about
90% complete, but it is so much better that we did not want to hold up a new
update to resolve the last few issues as they are relatively minor. (Yes, I
anticipate some of you dinging us for anything missing; we do want to hear
from you to tell us if we are missing something you think we really need!)

Before you start working with this new update, we need you to open the
Customize tool and go to option 8.2 and set it up as you want numbers to
display in Legacy.

The Option 8.2 settings will now have no effect on any reports!

Option 8.2 has 2 sections:

"On Family, Pedigree, and Descendant Views"
and
"Show RINs on all Name Lists"

The first section, if checked, will allow you to display a RIN and/or one or
none of the "non-RIN IDs" after names in Family Viewm Pedigree View, and
Descendant View .

The non-RIN IDs are: AFN, User ID, FamilySearch ID, or FindaGrave ID.
RIN will be displayed in square brackets after a name, eg. John Smith [231].
The non-RIN ID will be displayed after a name as {L8SJ-WLR} in curly
brackets.

The second section, if checked, will add RINs to Name Lists. That, of
course, includes Search Lists and Share Event with lists. It will add them
to Marriage lists, Show Lists, Name Lists in Master Location List, etc. And
it is supposed to be smart enough to assure a RIN is not shown twice. IE,
Show Lists normally have a RIN column; we do not add a RIN to them.

The Relationship Calculator has its own RIN control and that works
independently now of Option 8.2. Similarly, Chronology View on its Display
Options Formatting tab now has an independent control to display BOTH RINs
and MRINs.

Reports

All reports now have their own independent controls to determine what IDs
will be shown. The number of IDs that a report will be able to display is
dependent on what we felt was necessary or feasible for the Report.

All Reports will have an option as part of its Report Options to display
RINs; many will also have MRINs; some will also allow you to select ONE of
the non-RIN IDs; and some will also allow you to select all of the non-RIN
IDs.

The display of the IDs will be done on a report with labels so it is clear
which ID is being displayed:

RIN: [nnn]
MRIN: [MRIN: nnn]

Non-RIN IDs:

AFN: {AFN: nnn}
User ID: {UsrID: nnn}
FamilySearch ID: {FSID: nnn}
FindaGrave ID: {FGID: nnn}

This is the design. I am sure you will find a few glitches as there are a

[LegacyUG] New update

2019-01-11 Thread Michele Lewis
We just released an update. Two things to know real quick.

1) You will need to go to Options > Customize > View > Option 8.2. Select
your preferences and save. These have been changed back to the defaults
because Dave did a ton of work with these numbers.

2) When you first open your file, it will go through a source checking
routine. This will only happen when you open the file the first time in this
new build. It is reformatting the sources in such a way that they will
transfer to FamilySearch okay. It doesn't actually change anything that you
entered, it just makes it so FamilySearch can see the entire source and not
just the source name.

The revision history is here:

F.B. Purity is a browser extension that works with Facebook. It filters
out all of the unwanted stuff including the ads.

I have no gripe about Facebook but will not use it, just because it eats far
too much of my time. Being a curious curator, it can probably kill.
However I also was surprised at the numbers quoted as membership.
Have you ever thought of doing a roll call? Just to see what the numbers
really look like?
I for one am probably signed up as a Facebook member but never go there. I do
read the postings (At least the topics) on this list daily.

Unfortunately Marian and can't just copy and paste every post. Besides the time
involved, almost every post that Marian and I do have graphics.

The email LUG is here for those who prefer this format and that is perfectly
fine but I just wanted to let everyone know there are limitations.

I tried to follow the LUG FB page and it's totally insane. I can't keep up with
it. People hijack threads on FB just as often as they do in mailing lists

It can't take that long to copy a post you just made to FB and paste it into an
email. No need to retype the entire post. The people on the mailing list won't
get the follow-ups by the group that are on the FB page but there's no reason
they can't get announcements or other pertinent information about Legacy.

*Many email programs can thread a conversation for you.
*It's very easy to search emails - I think much easier than searching in a FB
group, esp if the emails have a good subject line.
*Sticky announcements are annoying - once I've read it, it's still there in my
face and I can't get rid of it. I can delete an email.
*If a mailing list is moderated, either members or posts, then you can cut down
on spam. In fact, I can't remember the last time I've seen spam on any of the
mailing lists I'm on. On FB, you have to wade through all the ads that FB puts
in a group. A moderated list can also put a stop to a thread by rejecting posts
*Polls can be sent on mailing lists as well. I just responded to one on a book
list.
*I can choose to save emails that are of particular interest to me or delete
ones I have no interest in. They're all lumped together on FB.
*All the graphics on a FB page are annoying.
*Mailing lists *can* allow pictures. Up to the list owner.

I've been using FB for a few Christian groups and still not a fan - I so wish
they were mailing lists instead!

[LegacyUG] Facebook

2019-01-08 Thread Michele Lewis via LegacyUserGroup
We have some complaints about the Facebook LUG getting more information than
the email LUG. I wanted to explain why that is. The Facebook LUG is in a
much easier format to post information. I can do ten times as much stuff on
the Facebook LUG than I can do here and a lot faster.

*Conversations are threaded so it is much easier to follow the conversations

*You don't have to worry about "trimming" emails to make them more readable
(and most people don't do this anyways)
*It is very easy to search the group for past posts.
*There is a section where we can upload files that are accessible to
everyone
*We have "sticky" announcements
*Upcoming webinars are announced as well as links to the Legacy News posts
*We can delete spam
*We can close comments on a thread that has run its course
*You can post screenshots which makes understanding problems (and explaining
problems) so much easier
*You can create polls (fun!)

There are 1579 members of the email LUG. There are 18,963 members of the
Facebook LUG

I know that there are some of you that have sworn you will never join
Facebook. Unfortunately you will be missing out on some things. I can't make
this email list do all of the things that Facebook can do.

You can easily join Facebook and change your privacy settings so that you
are pretty much incognito. You can make it so that no one can send you
friend requests. You can format your name in such a way that it isn't
obvious who you are (you can't post a fake name per Facebook rules but there
is some flexibility). You can pretty much block everything. You need to go
into the Privacy settings (all of the settings really) and go line by line
to get it set up like you want. We have users that have Facebook for no
other reason that the LUG group. I also HIGHLY recommend the browser
extension F.B. Purity. It works with Facebook to give a TON of options on
what you see and what you don't see. It gets rid of all the junk stuff (like
ads).

Totally up to you. I just wanted to explain why there is a difference
between what you see and what they see. If you change your mind, you can
join the Facebook LUG here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/LegacyUserGroup/
Click JOIN and then you will be asked three questions before you are
approved. This keeps out spammers. The Administrators of the group are,
Geoff Rasmussen, Marian Pierre-Louis, Ron Cannon (head of tech support), and
I. The moderators are John Lisle and Cathy Pinner, two names I am sure you
are familiar with.

In addition, we also have separate LUGS for the Dutch
(https://www.facebook.com/groups/LegacyNederlands/) and the Danes
(https://www.facebook.com/groups/198010627281215/) These two groups are
admin'd by the Legacy Translation Teams. I am also admin on these two groups
in case I am needed but I don't actively post there (my Dutch and Danish are
a bit weak).

I hope this information helps.

just this week. I have made changes to my email sending settings in hopes
that this message will not be treated that way any longer.
