[LegacyUG] One more thing
Another advantage to Facebook is that you can edit your posts if you make a mistake. I forgot to add the URL to the Legacy User Group on Facebook and I had to send this second email to give it to you. If this had been Facebook I would have simply edited my post https://www.facebook.com/groups/LegacyUserGroup/ Michele Simmons Lewis, CG® Legacy Educator Legacy Family Tree/MyHeritage mich...@legacyfamilytree.com www.legacyfamilytree.com -- LegacyUserGroup mailing list LegacyUserGroup@legacyusers.com To manage your subscription and unsubscribe http://legacyusers.com/mailman/listinfo/legacyusergroup_legacyusers.com Archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/
[LegacyUG] Facebook
I encourage you to join our Legacy User Group on Facebook. I know there are some of you that say there is no way you will ever get on Facebook but you can join Facebook and set your privacy so that you won’t get friend requests and no one can see what you post. The group itself is private so anything you post there isn’t seen by anyone except the other group members. You are missing a lot of stuff by not being there. I can’t cross post everything that I post there and I post quite a bit. I readily admit that my attention is with the Facebook group because I can do so many more things there than I can here. You can use screenshots and video clips which you can’t do here. You can explain a problem better with a screenshot and you can understand solutions to problems better as well with screenshots. I (and others) can upload files. For example, periodically I upload a pdf that has clickable links to all of the Tuesday's Tips from the Legacy Newsletter/Blog. John Lisle upload a great series with how to work with the custom geo code files in Legacy. The Facebook group is searchable and you can also use hashtags. You will see announcements from the staff when we need to get important information out. All events and webinars are announced to give you a heads up without having to monitor the webinar webpage. When an update is released it is announced here immediately. Another advantage, which I honestly wish I didn't have to use, I and the other admins/moderators can delete posts. I can also stop the commenting on a post if I need to. On the mailing list if someone posts something against the rules there isn't much I can do about it. I can remove the person but the posts stay and conversations go on and on that really need to be nipped. Even when I tell people enough is enough it goes on. That doesn't happen on Facebook. I monitor the list pretty much all of my waking hours. We have beta testers and power users that are monitoring the list when I actually sleep As of right now this mailing list has 1531 member. The Facebook group has 21,941. The Facebook group has 5 administrators and 2 moderators. It is also monitored by several staff members and some of our top beta testers and translators. I hope I see more of you there. Re: [LegacyUG] Announcement from the staff
All is well. It had nothing to do with a Windows update per se. We updated our Windows security certificates and that can cause antivirus programs to flag the program as a problem because they don’t recognize the updated certificates right away. If you make sure that all Windows programs are shut down before you install, and you RIGHT click the installation file and RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR chances are your antivirus will let it pass the first time. If you are installing through the program just make sure you have all other Windows programs shut down. This avoids the DLL error that some were getting. If your antivirus still gives you a warning simply add the Legacy installation file as an exception to your antivirus. If you turn off all running programs and then RIGHT click the installation file and select Run as Administrator this will stop 99% of the problems. If you update through the program itself (Legacy home tab) all you need to do is make sure that all running programs are off. Turning off all other programs avoids the DLL conflict issue. [LegacyUG] Those using previous versions
Those using previous version of Legacy (8 and earlier). You will not be updating. This will probably not be a problem for you guys. If your antivirus software gives you a fit you will need to add all of the Legacy .exe files as exceptions. Worst case scenario would be that your antivirus won't let you override. If that is the case, you will have to turn your antivirus off while using Legacy or change antivirus programs. I doubt that any of this will be necessary. [LegacyUG] A funny in the Help File
Dave, one of the original owners of Millennia who created Legacy, is the one ultimately responsible for our Help File. Sometimes I find something in the Help File that I never noticed before. Dave has quite the sense of humor 藍藍藍 I just pulled up the article on backing up your family file and found this smack dab in the middle of the paragraph... "Making regular backup copies of your Family File information is essential, yet is often taken for granted or ignored by many. Backups are a fundamental part of using a computer. If you never make backups and your hard drive fails, Legacy Technical Support cannot help you put Humpty Dumpty back together again. If you do make backups, you will be extremely happy someday and maybe even famous. More than one lowly family historian has been whisked off on a fantastic vacation by other family members after saving their vital genealogical information." Re: [LegacyUG] Backing up to the cloud
The problem with the Hints has nothing to do with the server. MyHeritage had an API (programming code) change on their side which caused us to have to make a code change on our side. The Legacy download IS housed on the broken server so we parked a copy on the Amazon server that houses the Legacy webinar site and we can give anyone who needs it a direct link to it. Re: [LegacyUG] Dna
Legacy is not set up to interface with other DNA. You need to use the testing company that you used and any other places that you uploaded your raw DNA to and work off of your match list there. You can keep your results in Legacy by using events and/or hashtags. Are use a combination of both. Michele On Mon, May 27, 2019 at 11:34 Robert O. [LegacyUG] UPDATE on the new server and Hints
UPDATE on the new server and Hints (21 May 2019, 12:05 pm ET) 1) Last Friday MyHeritage let us know that the new server is in place BUT it will take them some time to get it programmed and then to move everything over. Progress! Until then, make sure you are backing up your file in the "normal" way. If you need to download Legacy 9 you can use this direct link http://downloads.familytreewebinars.com/misc/Legacy9Setup.exe 2) The beta testers have been working with the programmer that does all of the Hints stuff and there has been progress there as well. He sent the beta testers some replacement files with fixes in it and they are evaluating them (they still need tweaking). [LegacyUG] Announcement from the staff
If you send an email to this list that is "too large" the email will be rejected and go into a holding queue. I am sent a notification and then I go in and clear it out. I don't read these I just delete them. So what will cause an email to be too large? 1) If you are not sending your emails in plain text and your email has too much HTML coding it will be rejected 2) If you have included attachments or you have embedded images into the email (attachments and embedded images are a no no on the list Why is this? We have people that are subscribed to this list that are on dial up (yes it still exists), limited plans/metered connections. Keeping the emails in plain text and with no attachments or embedded images makes it so that they can enjoy the mailing list without taking forever for the emails to load or taking away from their limited connection. Also, computer viruses are commonly attached to image files sent via email. If you sent a message and it never appears then I might have deleted it because it got flagged. If you want to have more flexibility then I invite you to join our Facebook Group. We have members there that don't use FB for anything else so they have their privacy settings ramped up and they accept no friend requests. Works like a charm. I know that there are some of you that say you will never get on FB and that is fine. All I am saying is that we have to keep this email list on plain text with no attachments or embedded images so that those people who have no other choice have a forum to connect with other users and so that you don't inadvertently pick up a virus or malware. https://www.facebook.com/groups/LegacyUserGroup/ Michele Simmons Lewis, CGR Legacy Educator Legacy Family Tree/MyHeritage mich...@legacyfamilytree.com www.legacyfamilytree.com -- LegacyUserGroup mailing list LegacyUserGroup@legacyusers.com To manage your subscription and unsubscribe http://legacyusers.com/mailman/listinfo/legacyusergroup_legacyusers.com Archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/

1) Some things have already been moved to a new server (all the webinar stuff for example) but until this process is complete, backup your files in the normal way. 2) We have made some progress with the Hints. [LegacyUG] Server issues
This is the 4th update I have posted to the LUG List about the servers. Some people are still posting questions about it. The difference is that on the Facebook Group I have the ability to "pin" an announcement to the top of the page so it is in plain sight. When I post here the message gets lost in the other posts. As of 7:50 am ET the process to move everything to the MyHeritage servers is still not complete. MyHeritage has not given us an estimated time when everything will be back in service. Right now what is being affected are the cloud backups, form submissions (problem reports, suggestions, and address changes), and downloads though the downloads for the older version of Legacy are working. You can email us directly at supp...@legacyfamilytree.com <mailto:supp...@legacyfamilytree.com> if you have a problem or a suggestion. [LegacyUG] Update on the server
Apparently moving to a new server is more of a big deal than I thought but then again, I have no clue about such things MyHeritage is handling the entire process now so we have to wait for them to give us an update. Just remember to back up your files in the normal way. The cloud storage is an additional safeguard and shouldn’t be your main backup routine especially since you can’t back up your media this way. [LegacyUG] Today's Tip
I am copying this one over from Facebook. TIP OF THE DAY (Legacy Staff) - Sat Edition! My current project is a limited One-Name Study. I am compiling every Simmons (and variants) living in South Carolina pre-1820. I am doing this project to help break down a brick wall, but even if my brick wall doesn't crumble, I will be publishing this project in some sort of way and I want it to read out nice. There is no way I would let all of this work go to waste (it is going to take me months) Right now I am working on getting my event sentences right. So far I only have the following events... Residence Occupation Marriage License Marriage Settlement Marriage Bond I have been entering marriage records and that is why I have this particular list. I want to get these formatted correctly before I go any further. I am telling you all of this to show you that the Legacy staff and the beta testers are seasoned researchers that actually use Legacy. We use the program in the same ways as you do. I have been researching for 28 years, 17 years of that at a professional level. I have also been board-certified for 2 years. I have been using Legacy for 14 years. I switched from FTM to the free standard version of Legacy 5 and then upgraded to the deluxe version when Legacy 6 came out. I have been working for Legacy (and now My Heritage) for 6 years. So on this Saturday my plans are to write these sentence definitions and extract data from The South Carolina Historical and Genealogical Magazine which is online from 1900-1923. Happy hunting! Restore your most current back and give it a very unique name so that you know which file is which. Now open your current file and the restored file in split screen. You can then copy your deleted person from your backup file to your working file. However, any changes that you made to this person since the last backup will be lost. I suggest you don’t include them in reports. You don’t need them and those persons reading your reports won’t understand them. These are autogenerated numbers that database programs need to have. I have nothing there and as far as I can tell, I do not have any libraries/sources pointing to my C drive. This wouldn't be too bad except that during the media search on the "C" drive, Legacy freezes up and I have to do a three finger salute to close it out and start it again. This is a Windows 7 computer by the way I saw a Legacy page with instruction on this for Windows 10, didn't apply to me, so I passed it by. Can someone tell me how to stop Legacy from searching my "C" drive? My second question also pertains to relinking media, though I manually search for it. When I relink a media file to a sourced event, is there any way to have Legacy relink the same media file to other events that use the same source? It is a PITA to have to go through and manually relink a jpg to multiple copies of the same source. Thank you in advance for any help here. My first problem and question goes like thisWhen letting Legacy 9 search for my missing media on it's own, it always starts on my "C" drive. Re: [LegacyUG] Two paths
You can easily do this. Give the “child” two sets of parents and then mark both sets as invisible until you have it figured out. You can then research both lines and enter data. When you have your answer, you simply unlink the child from the wrong parents and change the right parents to not invisible. The wrong parents (and any people you have attached to them) will be in their own little isolated tree. Chances are, they are related in some way so I wouldn’t get rid of them. If you figure out the correct connection you can link the entire tree back into your line. There are some photos that you can't see in the person's individual Media Gallery. Location photos is one. You also can't see photos that are attached to Master Sources or Source Details. [LegacyUG] Feb 2019 Monthly Reminder
Legacy User Group Monthly Reminder 1) Please help us keep the Legacy User Group Email List friendly, helpful, and fun. 2) We do not allow attachments or embedded images because we have users that are on dial up or have metered connections. Also, please send your emails using plain text. Some users are using email clients that can't "see" HTML or RichText so they end up with garbled emails. 3) Please create a new email to LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com to start a new thread (topic). DO NOT just hit Reply and change the Subject line. When replying to an ongoing conversation, please trim your messages so that only the most current earlier responses are included. 4) Please keep the conversation confined to the Legacy program and to the add-ons that work with Legacy. Since we have a direct sync to FamilySearch, FamilySearch questions are usually fair game. You can post questions about MyHeritage if your question relates to Legacy in some way. If you are having a problem with MyHeritage please email their tech support at supp...@myheritage.com. Once we have the direct sync to MyHeritage we will expand what we allow. 5) Several Legacy staff members and beta testers monitor this list and they may advise you to email supp...@legacyfamilytree.com for more complex technical support issues or ask you to send enhancement requests here https://legacyfamilytree.com/Suggest.asp. The LUG email list is more for "How do I... in Legacy?" and for tips that will help other users. 6) Keep up to date with what's going on at Legacy by subscribing to our newsletter at https://legacyfamilytree.com/subscribe.asp. You can also click over to the Legacy Home tab to see hot links to all of the latest news articles and announcements in Legacy itself. 7) Don't forget that you can also join the Legacy User Group Facebook page for even more interaction with the staff, beta testers, translators, and other users https://www.facebook.com/groups/LegacyUserGroup/ We currently have over 19,000 members. 8) If you ever want to unsubscribe from the LUG email list, there is a link at the bottom of every email that you can use. 9) If you have any problems concerning the Legacy User Group List you can email mich...@legacyfamilytree.com. [LegacyUG] Here is a more comprehensive explanation of the update
I put out my announcement super quick. John Lisle wrote a more comprehensive explanation of the update now that we have had a few minutes. Legacy 9 Update 279 Yes, we have been promising another Legacy 9 update for days... It is here now. Yes, it fixes the Error 62 problem with Family group Report. (I am sure that many of you will be glad of that!) It also fixes a number of other issues that you can see from the revision history. I am not going to go into all of them as you can read that list, and most are self explanatory. What I do wish to share with you are a few very visible changes. First, we discovered that we needed to check all of your source records as we were finding that many users have records that are missing a field needed by FamilySearch. It does not hurt your data, but it does make it difficult to transfer sources properly to Legacy FamilySearch and other tools. When you open your Family File for the first time with this update, you will see a display where is says "Checking Sources" This may take a short while if you have a lot of sources. Do not worry. This is not changing any of your sources, but, after it is complete, your sources will now transfer correctly. Another major changes is that, in response to numerous requests, we have done a major revision to how we handle the various IDs you see displayed while running Legacy and that you add to reports. We have this project about 90% complete, but it is so much better that we did not want to hold up a new update to resolve the last few issues as they are relatively minor. (Yes, I anticipate some of you dinging us for anything missing; we do want to hear from you to tell us if we are missing something you think we really need!) Before you start working with this new update, we need you to open the Customize tool and go to option 8.2 and set it up as you want numbers to display in Legacy. The Option 8.2 settings will now have no effect on any reports! Option 8.2 has 2 sections: "On Family, Pedigree, and Descendant Views" and "Show RINs on all Name Lists" The first section, if checked, will allow you to display a RIN and/or one or none of the "non-RIN IDs" after names in Family Viewm Pedigree View, and Descendant View . The non-RIN IDs are: AFN, User ID, FamilySearch ID, or FindaGrave ID. RIN will be displayed in square brackets after a name, eg. John Smith [231]. The non-RIN ID will be displayed after a name as {L8SJ-WLR} in curly brackets. The second section, if checked, will add RINs to Name Lists. That, of course, includes Search Lists and Share Event with lists. It will add them to Marriage lists, Show Lists, Name Lists in Master Location List, etc. And it is supposed to be smart enough to assure a RIN is not shown twice. IE, Show Lists normally have a RIN column; we do not add a RIN to them. The Relationship Calculator has its own RIN control and that works independently now of Option 8.2. Similarly, Chronology View on its Display Options Formatting tab now has an independent control to display BOTH RINs and MRINs. Reports All reports now have their own independent controls to determine what IDs will be shown. The number of IDs that a report will be able to display is dependent on what we felt was necessary or feasible for the Report. All Reports will have an option as part of its Report Options to display RINs; many will also have MRINs; some will also allow you to select ONE of the non-RIN IDs; and some will also allow you to select all of the non-RIN IDs. The display of the IDs will be done on a report with labels so it is clear which ID is being displayed: RIN: [nnn] MRIN: [MRIN: nnn] Non-RIN IDs: AFN: {AFN: nnn} User ID: {UsrID: nnn} FamilySearch ID: {FSID: nnn} FindaGrave ID: {FGID: nnn} This is the design. I am sure you will find a few glitches as there are a lot of tools to check and different user settings may give different results. You can easily join Facebook and change your privacy settings so that you are pretty much incognito. You can make it so that no one can send you friend requests. You can format your name in such a way that it isn't obvious who you are (you can't post a fake name per Facebook rules but there is some flexibility). You can pretty much block everything. You need to go into the Privacy settings (all of the settings really) and go line by line to get it set up like you want. We have users that have Facebook for no other reason that the LUG group. I also HIGHLY recommend the browser extension F.B. Purity. It works with Facebook to give a TON of options on what you see and what you don't see. It gets rid of all the junk stuff (like ads). Totally up to you. I just wanted to explain why there is a difference between what you see and what they see. If you change your mind, you can join the Facebook LUG here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/LegacyUserGroup/ Click JOIN and then you will be asked three questions before you are approved. This keeps out spammers. The Administrators of the group are, Geoff Rasmussen, Marian Pierre-Louis, Ron Cannon (head of tech support), and I. The moderators are John Lisle and Cathy Pinner, two names I am sure you are familiar with. In addition, we also have separate LUGS for the Dutch (https://www.facebook.com/groups/LegacyNederlands/) and the Danes (https://www.facebook.com/groups/198010627281215/) These two groups are admin'd by the Legacy Translation Teams. I am also admin on these two groups in case I am needed but I don't actively post there (my Dutch and Danish are a bit weak). I hope this information helps. [LegacyUG] Mapping
Mapping - Mapping will not be coming back in its current form. The developers are working on something new to replace it. I do not have any timetable for this. [LegacyUG] DMARC
We have changed some setting in the LUG email client so that you shouldn't see many (if any) of the DMARC quarantine messages. I have made changes to my email sending settings in hopes that this message will not be treated that way any longer.
