Then you should take this up with the webinar then. Is there a contact
email on the webinar site?

If not send an email to supp...@legacyfamilytree.com. They may have
means to contact webinar management or solve webinar issues.

The first thing to check is to see if Hotmail is sending your
confirmations to the junk mail folder as spam.

The second is to make sure that you have not made a mistake in your
email address when registering your account at the webinar site.

Look for a Manage Account button on the pop up when signing in. That
will take you to a log in screen with the email address you used to
register.

Re: [LegacyUG] Webinars

2017-06-01 Thread Brian Kelly
I am not sure if there is a Webinar but they do sell two sets of
training videos, Volume 2 includes a video called Tagging and Searching
made easy. The set sells for US$ 32.95 plus shipping.

See the description of both sets here:
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Videos.asp

The free training video Legacy for Beginners, See page above, has a
section on importing a GEDCOM. I did not see any mention of exporting a
GEDCOM however.

did was choose who to being with and it was so easy and direct, so now I am
lost. I know I am older, but hope I am not that far gone. Leonard

2017-05-29 Thread Cathy Pinner

Laura,

A webinar subscription allows you to watch any webinar once you've
signed in and as many as you like while you are subscribed. You can also
download the notes for each webinar.

You can't watch them offline though. That's why there is the option for
people to purchase individual webinars.

I have been a webinar subscriber since last fall but only in early
2017 purchased Legacy once I realized that is really the program to
use, so I guess I’ll be in on the discussions from time to time with
software pertinent questions.

Laura,

A webinar subscription is much better value than purchasing individual
webinars.

However, I would think that Sales is the best place to ask about your
purchases and whether you can be given a new link for the downloads.

They shouldn't be corrupting - do you mean that the PDFs are locked
and you can't unlock them again with the code?

I know this isn't about Legacy software but I am a new user and I
can't find the answer to my question on the website. Maybe someone can
help me.

I've bought webinars and quick guides not realizing that I had to
download them the week I purchased them. Going back later, I couldn't
download them. What a surprise!

Even when I do download things, they corrupt after a certain period of
time and can't be used then. Since all the webinars say "purchase" not
"lease," and I can't find anywhere or figure out the policy, where do
I find the ground rules? Any help will be appreciated.

They are still applicable for many of us.

There are many of us who must still use Legacy 7 because in Legacy 8 some of
the functions and reports that are essential to our work are still too buggy or
get bugs in new updates.

We are anxious to switch, but must still use Legacy 7. We are SO glad that
webinars for our version are still available. Especially now that there are no
new updates for Legacy 7, all the help we can get is essential.

Impatient to be able to use Legacy 8!

Geoff,

I really hesitate to ask, however what about the Legacy Family Tree Video
Training Series - Vol. 2? This series contains important Legacy instruction
dealing with report, searching, tagging, digital media, and more yet is listed
as currently out of print. The set is still listed in the Legacy store and on
the main Legacy web page. Are there any plans to redo this series for Legacy 8?

Curious, which webinar was it in 2011? The webinar on sources in Legacy was in
2014 at  http://familytreewebinars.com/download.php?webinar_id=201 . When there
are topics that are obsolete, we either redo them or remove them. Doesn't
happen to often though.

 All the webinars are free.

If you can't register and watch them at the time, they are available
for about a week to ten days after.

Try using MiniReminder. It's a handy, free, program that's useful for
all sorts of things, not just webinars and birthdays.

That's why I suggested MiniReminder (www.minireminder.com). As soon
as you boot up your computer or at midnight MiniReminder pops up and
reminds you about the Webinar - so long as you've actually put the
 details in of course :))

There's also an alarm on Legacy which you can set.

Re: [LegacyUG] Webinars

2012-08-09 Thread Wendy Howard
The first training video is free to watch. It contains a lot of useful
information - I showed it to my local group a few years ago, and even
those who had been using Legacy forever and thought they knew it well
learned something new. http://legacyfamilytree.com/Videos.asp

The webinars are viewable for at least a while after they're first put
up for viewing; some are available indefinitely. Geoff always posts
here with an announcement when it's put up on the site, so go there
straight away to view, or don't delete his email until you have - or
find some other way of reminding yourself to go and do that while you
can. http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/webinars.asp

Hope this helps. :-)

put noon my time=what their time and/or noon their time = when I need to call.

RE: [LegacyUG] Webinars

2012-08-01 Thread Bernhard Scholz
Cynthia, et all,

I live in Germany and know due to experience that the webinars are at about
20:00 (8:00 PM) local summer time.

A suggestion on my side is that the times for the webinars are set as UTC or old
GMT.
That way one only needs to remember the offset for ones time zone.

The difference depends on which side of the UK (0 meridian) you live.
That's history and not from me.

Going to the east you add one hour.
Going to the west you subtract one.
The limit is the date line.

The offset in hours is for eg.

Australia between +8 and +10
Germany +1 (in the summertime +2)
South Afrika+2
UK 0
USA between -4 and -10

BTW. I prefer the 24 hour system as eg. today the webinar is at 18:00 UTC (6:00
PM).
That means for the East Coast.

Eg. 18:00 UTC minus 4 hours thus 14:00 local time or 2:00PM local time.
If someone forgets the PM this could also be 6:00 in the morning.

Many use 24 hour system.
Not only your military but also the aviation, shipping and many more.

Just think about this.

Bernhard

BTW.
I grew up with the 12 hour system but after a very short time I found it great.
The first time I heard about the 24 hour system was as child of with '14
hundred' in a film from the States.
At that time my father said there is no time like '14 hundred'.
In the meantime I know that '14 hundred' means 14:00 or 2:00 PM.

Re: [LegacyUG] Webinars

2012-08-01 Thread hwedhlor
Sherry,

My apologies for the typo I made this morning that said the
webinar would be at 2 pm Arizona time. It’s at 3 pm Arizona
time.

Arizona does not follow Daylight Saving Time. At present
Arizona time is the same as Pacific Daylight Time, and we
are 3 hours different from Eastern time, so the webinar that
starts at 6 pm Eastern time will begin at 3 pm Arizona (and
California) time.

On November 4^th 2012 most of the country will “fall back”
an hour, but Arizona will not, so then Arizona will be on
Mountain Standard Time, or two hours different than Eastern
time.

On March 10^th 2013, most of the country will “spring
forward” an hour, and Arizona will not, so at that time
Arizona will again be on Pacific Standard Time, or three
hours different than Eastern time.

On the reigstration page, just under the title of the webinar, it
shows the datea and time for the webinar. Next to that is a link
Show in my Time Zone.

Click on that then the Select Your Time Zone window, there's a
drop-down arrow at the end of the field to select any time zone in the
world. One of the Options is Arizona. The time zones are in order

The confirmation and reminders come in the time zone you select on the

Another solution, that will work for anyone, is to use Google Calendar
and have the Legacy webinar calendar imported into your calendar
(details on the webinars page). Then it will show in YOUR local time,
according to your settings.

You can register at Google with any email address, you don't have to get
a Gmail one if you don't want to - but it's a great service so why not
do it anyway? And once you've registered, a whole world of new tools
becomes available to you - but that's beyond the scope of this mailing list.

Hope this helps someone. :-)

Basically just want the wiki said - a web-based seminar. You can even
raise your hand and ask a question if you wish by typing it into the
provided discussion window.

Unfortunately, there is no capacity for closed- caption, but it's not
just a talking head. There are screen shots and slides.

You could view some of the archived webinars to see if they would work
for you - be aware that each presenter has a different way of
discussing the topic.

Gene - I've read the Legacy webinar page and am still no wiser. The word
verbally appears nowhere. Exactly how is all this information
explained? Does one sit at their computer with speakers turned on and
listen to a lecture, does one download material, exactly what goes on?
None of the descriptions mention exactly HOW the webinar is conducted,

Re: [LegacyUG] Webinars explained, please

2011-03-01 Thread Sherry/Support
When you click on the Click Here to Register link on the far right,
you'll get a window with information about the specific webinar as
well as system requirements.

The website does say *Listen* to our archived webinars

Also, in the Legacy News as shown in the Legacy Home tab, Geoff
discusses the webinars.

Helen, the snippet of the wiki article which you originally posted
really does not explain a webinar - it only defines where the word
webinar came from.

Web conferencing is used to conduct live meetings, training, or
presentations via the Internet. In a web conference, each participant
sits at his or her own computer and is connected to other participants
via the internet. This can be either a downloaded application on each
of the attendees' computers or a web-based application where the
attendees access the meeting by clicking on a link distributed by
e-mail (meeting invitation) to enter the conference.

A webinar is a neologism, specifically a portmanteau of web
seminar, to describe a specific type of web conference. It is
typically one-way,[1] from the speaker to the audience with limited
audience interaction, such as in a webcast. A webinar can be
collaborative[1] and include polling and question answer sessions to
allow full participation between the audience and the presenter. In
some cases, the presenter may speak over a standard telephone line,
while pointing out information being presented onscreen, and the
audience can respond over their own telephones, speaker phones
allowing the greatest comfort and convenience. There are web
conferencing technologies on the market that have incorporated the use
of VoIP audio technology, to allow for a completely web-based
communication. Depending upon the provider, webinars may provide
hidden or anonymous participant functionality, making participants
unaware of other participants in the same meeting.

Helen,

A Webinar is a seminar attended through an internet link. It is
possible (and probable) that you could get some benefit from
attending. Though some of the webinar is spoken, most have
presentation slides that show what they are talking about. You might
want to look at one of the recorded webinars and see if you think it
benefits, bearing in mind that not all presenters put on similar
shows. Check the link at http://legacyfamilytree.com/Webinars.asp to
try it out.

Re: [LegacyUG] Webinars explained, please

2011-03-01 Thread Paul Brodsky
Helen,

Yes, in most cases (if not all) the first thing you see is turn on your
speakers (or something to that effect). By definition, a webinar would be
the exact same thing as you going to a simple presentation at your local
library (or wherever) where someone is speaking for on a particular topic.
The main difference is that it's conducted over the web so that people can
attend from anywhere they have an Internet connection.

However, with a webinar you typically don't have the advantage of actually
seeing the speaker. The audio for some webinars comes through the computer
speakers, others have you dial into a special phone number to listen to the
audio.

What you generally WILL see though with a webinar is the various 'slides'
the speaker is using (i.e. Powerpoint slides or other similar visuals).
Depending on the presentation though, the slides may or may not be useful
without the audio. For example, a slide of an old photograph where the
speaker talks about how to guesstimate the date based on various elements in
the picture may not mean much without the audio (or closed caption or a
transcript).

That being said, for some presentations, the slides may be helpful by
themselves. Let's say someone is giving a presentation on great places on
the Internet to find additional information. Most likely their slides would
included website addresses and possibly descriptions of what could be found
there. In those cases, you would probably get some benefit from that alone.

There are technologies out there that allow webinars to be closed captioned
- either live or after initial broadcast - but that is something that needs
to be worked out by whomever is hosting the presentation and I'm not very
familiar with what costs and/or specific technologies are required.

Personally, I would offer this as a suggestion:

Use the webinars schedule on the Legacy website (and elsewhere) much in the
same way you might use the table of contents in a magazine - as food for
thought for topics or areas of learning that might not be top of mind. (ex.
a recent webinar was on backing up your data - something that is all too
easy to forget about until it's too late).

When/If the webinar has been archived, you can watch it to see if the visual
part of the presentation (i.e. the slides) offers any useful information. I
didn't view the data backup webinar but I imagine there are mentions of
various online backup companies such as mozy.com, dropbox.com, carbonite.com,
and Amazon.com's Simple Storage Service. Just seeing those options
mentioned on a slide would give you enough information to start doing some
research and learning more about them through other sources even though you
didn't hear the original audio.

Additionally, presenters often provide their contact information on a slide
somewhere - usually at the end - or make it available elsewhere for anyone
who has follow-up questions. On the Legacy website, they are nice enough to
include a link to the presenter's webpage. So, if the webinar on
preserving family photos was of interest to you, you can visit the site of
the presenter, http://www.maureentaylor.com/, and contact her directly for
more information.

So again, the webinar becomes more of a launch point for additional
information rather than a direct source.

I hope that helps.

Paul

Thank you all so much for your detailed explanations, especially Sherry.
You've answered all my questions.

First of all, I don't have computer speakers - don't need them, can't
hear them. Haven't used a phone in 10 years - can't find one loud
enough, heard of VOIP but no idea nor inclination of course, to find out
how it works.

I did go to the archived page and the first word I saw was Listen! But
I persevered. Tried the Tracing Women one but it seemed very USA based
- no use to me. So I went over to Data Cleanup. Lots of good pointers
there but watching it was like watching wallpaper peel because I could
only read each screen and not listen to any detailed explanation.

The downloads should be handy though and I'll certainly go for them. But
now that my suspicions are confirmed, at least I won't be depriving a
hearing person of a place in a future Webinar.

If they ever become close-captioned though, please let me know.

Again, my grateful thanks to everyone and their lengthy, detailed
messages - just what I wanted to know. And thank you for taking the time
and trouble to reply.

  Helen,

If you have some hearing you might consider listening to the
webinars with earphones, which in turn might allow you to
increase the volume high enough for you to hear what is
being said. Additionally, some of the webinars have had
live video of the presenters, though that video typically
ceased once the first visual aid was displayed.

Just a thought,

Well, Helen, it was worth a try. :-) Perhaps some sort of
speech-to-text device might help you. I was able to view
the text of Geoff Rasmussen's voice delivery from one of the
webinars a few minutes ago when I played back the Real
Player video and recorded the voice with Dragon Dictation on
my iPhone. The problem with that solution is that it's
not a real-time transcription, though it's pretty accurate.
There are also programs for the PC such as Express Scribe,
that allows voice input to be transcribed to text, and
Windows from XP on up has speech recognition built it, which
allows dictation, but it's very awkward to use. There
should be a simple software switch to throw that provides
real-time captioning for voice on our PCs. The technology
is not unknown. If I find anything I'll let you know.
