Will it be called the Librettoor the Cudaria (the tablet version of the Libretto released towards the beginning of the L20 era)? Well, given that it's a toss up how things will go, we'll have to wait and see. I'd pick one up if I only needed a basic Linux box, but w/o full Vista/XP support, it's hard to add things like printers, drivers, etc. for other devices. They're in the works for the Vista version I hear. That said, what do you do if you're just a beginner with Linux and trying to hook up one of those latest all-in-one printers from Canon or Epson?!? I'm sure this point will drive many early adopters nuts =P In any case, on the flip side, there's the main laptop competitor - the Nokia N95 and other PDA phones. These phones are getting so powerful, they can handle the basics of web surfing, office document editing, emailing through POP/IMAP, web browsing over cellular and WiFi, and taking TV quality movies and high-res photos ... along with the usual MP3/MP4 playback. At some point, these phone manufacturers will have to talk with the laptop makers and come up with something 1lbs and portable. eeePC is nice, but still 2lbs (you'd think after 10+ years after the Libretto, we'd be down to 1/2lbs mini-notebooks by now...). Something I'm saving up for right now N95 8GB =) Anyways, the Fujitsu mini-notebook with swivel screen and touch-screen input is my alternative vs. the eeePC. That one's going for $999 but it does run Vista, and the touch-screen does make for a nice tablet entry portable ebook reader. The eeePC in comparison is kinda of funny - with Black Friday 2006 Toshiba notebooks selling for $199 at Microcenter (and sure to be repeated this year), why would I want to spend $199 on a 2lbs mini that can't store much on the 4GB flash HD? (Yep, 4GB =[ Haven't seen one of those since the L50 days) I think Asus is on the right track with their first attempt...although they should have simply stuck in a 1.8 HD of at least 40GB right away instead of the flash drive. [LIB] new Mini-Laptop from Fujitsu - FMV-U8240 / summary of current mini-notebook categories
Date: Wed, 16 May 2007 15:56:55 -0700 (PDT) From: David Chien [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: new Mini-Laptop from Fujitsu - FMV-U8240 / summary of current mini-notebook categories http://www.fujitsu.com/global/news/pr/archives/month/2007/20070516-01.html http://www.fmworld.net/biz/fmv/product/hard/blb0704/u8240/ Ah, a mini-laptop with a decently small form factor, 5.6 widescreen, and a built-in keyboard at 580gr. Similar to the Kohjisha SA1F00 7 widescreen mini-laptop, but smaller and lighter by almost 50%. Not quite as small as the OQO or Flipstart minis, which have keyboards that are merely buttons rather than keys. Downsides include lack of built-in VGA port, no PCMCIA slot (only CF) for wireless modem cards, and maximum vertical resolution of 600 pixels (768 would have been ideal). (as a comparison, the Kohjisha has the VGA port, but has a lower resolution screen, and only CF slot) thankfully, at least the Wifi is built-in (unlike the even smaller, keyboardless 350gr Raon Vega mini-palmtop), and it's at the size where it can fit into a pants pocket just like the old Librettos. (The Kohjisha is a bit too long and wide.) But whether these laptops are actually responsive enough to do much remains to be seen. Certainly, most laptops running anything less than a 1Ghz Mobile Pentium processor can be considered to be quite slow -- good for just the basic emails, web browsing, GPS Navigation and word processing. 2Ghz single core or any dual/quad/8 core processor laptop is my recommendation as a minimum for any sort of video editing, MP3 conversion, etc. application today. Within their limited role as data entry devices and GPS navigation units, the Fujitsu should be a decent platform for such. --- Four categories of mini-laptops have appeared: 1) Small and compact, almost PDA sized, touch-screen only with no keyboard. eg. Samsung Q1 series, etc. 2) Small and compact, PDA sized, button keyboards. eg. OQO, Flipstart, Sony UX 3) Small and compact, 1lbs category, usable keyboard. eg. Fujitsu FMV-U8240 4) Small and compact, 2lbs category, usable keyboard. eg. Kohjisha SA1, Sony TX series On the boundary between mini-laptops and normal laptops include models from Panasonic such as the W/Y/R series of 2-3lbs smaller-sized notebooks and the Sony G1 carbon fiber notebook at 2lbs, albeit at a price that is in the $2-3k range (vs. the above which is in the $1-1.5k range). Thus, for me, the Fujitsu could be a good replacement for the Libretto 110 I have -- adding XP, higher resolution, lighter, USB port to what I have now - in a pocketable mini-laptop. Yet, with Intel aiming to release even more powerful, lower-powered processors for the 2008-2009 years to target the ultra-mobile market, it remains to be seen whether the Fujitsu is the 'best' of the breed for the next year or so, or merely the first ultra-mobile among many good ones yet to come. Nevertheless, it is a good sign to see that the legacy that was started by Toshiba is expanding with new mini-laptops this year. adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ Moody friends. So insert hard disk into libretto - by default the hard disk is a master. Boot off a windows 98 floppy. Run fdisk and make the biggest primary partition I can, 8gb and mark it active, reboot. We did run fdisk /mbr right? Boot off the floppy again and format c: /s to include the system start up files. You may need to boot off a Windows 98SE disk for large hard drive support. Older versions of DOS don't support large hard drives well. Also, download the EZ-Drive from my site, then install that right away. It's the easiest way to make everything work from the start. If you don't do this, then it should be pretty easy. 1) Install HD 2) Boot from Win98SE diskette 3) fdisk, create a small 2GB primary active bootable partition. 4) reboot, run fdisk /mbr to make sure. 5) take out floppy, reboot, and you should be in. 6) at this point, you'll either need an OS that supports large HDs like window s2000/XP/Linux, or you'll need to a) run a drive manager like EZ-Drive or do one of the many tricks to get a large HD working posted in prior articles here. 7) I simply used EZ-Drive, then use Partition Magic or Ranish Partition Manager to resize the first partition up to the 8GB boundary, then create a 2nd data partition after the 8GB to the end of the HD. 8) Install Windows and off you go. adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ __ Do You Yahoo!? Not an amazing speed difference, but something that'll turtle along for basic email/internet. It's not a bad system - one of the cheapest, lightest, smallest bargains around for a touch-screen + built-in keyboard + modern system. Just know that the CPU isn't a rocket, and Intel is aggressively pushing development to achieve super-low-power CPUs in the next couple of years for microlaptops that actually can run Vista well. In addition, there's the super-mini Sony UX series which has a faster processor, similar touch-screen+keypad features, and is even smaller in size. --- Keep in mind that the lack of a PCMCIA slot means there will be no way to achieve fast wireless cellular lan connections using the typical PCMCIA cards they have. You'll only be able to bluetooth, etc teathered to your cell phone, which sucks up battery life out of your phone like crazy. I was looking at them vs. the usual other candidates if I were to upgrade from my L110. OQO Sony U series Fujitsu P1600 series touchscreens Panasonic W/Y/R/T series. Toshiba R200 I haven't yet because it's not that important, esp. with my cell phone capable of getting my emails through the webmail, and it can do pop/imap + Google Maps Mini + Opera Mini. So it's almost like my phone has replaced my Libretto to a degree for a portable 'something' that let's me jump online and get emails. But I do use myLibretto for longer letters, archiving emails, backing up my digital camera photos to CD, etc., so it's still very useful for that on trips. It's just that nothiing yet has quite what I'm looking for - compact + CD/DVD burner + lightweight + touchscreen + decent price. The Sony/Fujitsu 2-3lbs come close, but at their usual $1500-$2000 starting price, I'm not really itching to trade up for that esp. when new 15 widescreen notebooks from Acer go on sale at microcenter.com (earlier this year) for only $199 USD. It's almost like what in the world are the makers thinking?!? They give you less of a notebook (smaller screen, smaller HD, parts, slower CPU, etc), but then charge 10x more! (eg. $199 Acer vs. $2000 Sony T series) I think in this sense, I'm just waiting for the recent Libretto models to drop to the ~$500 level before I migrate Otherwise, I'd rather spend the $1000+ difference on a real 17 gaming notebook with GeForce 7900+ series graphics card =P and be able to get some serious video editing and gaming done for the price. But here's the other thing -- Toshiba simply built the L110 so well that over the years I've owned it, it simply works! Works well, no serious problems, run well, and still does the job well! =) Guess they built a tank The OQO's are tempting -- they're the only ones that'll fit a large shirt pocket, and are realistically the only 1lbs portable + keyboard portables that can be had easily. Only Win2000/XP or a *nix variant have their own idle loops, W95/98/Me really need RAIN or something similar. Oh yes, something else: There are 3.3V and 5V cards, and 16 and 32 bit cards. The L50 handles only 5V 16 bits. You may come across 3.3V 16 bit cards, they will not work. I first bought a D-link DWL-650 wifi card that did not work, as it is a 3.3V 16 bit beast. Manufaturers don't always write specs clearly enough. I've been using a Cisco AiroNet 350 Card with great success. 've had success with the Cabletron/Enterasys/Lucent/Orinoco/Skylan cards (all those cards, at least as of about a year ago, are identical and made by the same company and have just been rebadged). Look for the ones with Lucent chips on them, will run off 5V 16bit (non-Cardbus) slots and which look a bit like http://www.enterasys.com/roamabout/indoor/CSIBD-AA.jpg (ie. NOT the ones that have the Dlink 'fishtail' antenna or the Sony flip-up antenna or whatever, I'm pretty sure those 2 at least are NOT Lucent chips). I've used both the Ornioco and Cabletron/Enterasys cards in a L50 with Win95OSR2 as well as a L100 with Win98SE. adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ Food fight? Today a mate has given me what was his Mums 70CT ;-) It currently has the Toshiba 95B on there and I wondered what the panel suggests would be the best (Windows) OS for this model please (I guess I can take the upper 16M out of the 50 and put it in the 16M 70?). Really too slow to run much more than Windows 98SE, which is what I'd recommend. Very stable, runs decently, but try to up it to 32MB RAM total. Also, you may want to look into using only IE5.5 (somewhat faster than IE 6), or Opera for the web browser. Also, try not to install to many apps - eg Virus scanners, etc. I'd go with AVG Free or a light McAfee VScan 4.51 + ZoneAlarm 2.6 era for the protection. Also, 98Lite is a program to consider if you really want to trim it down some more. --- Anything higher than 98SE is really too much for 32MB of ram and the slower L70 processor, IMO. For Win2k, I'd really have to recommend at least a 64MB L110 at the very minimum. Anyways, that's really all that these machines were designed for, and the limited RAM really hinders the use of much more. CPU speeds aren't that great, even if overclocked, so don't stick too much on them and they'll run just fine. adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ Don't get soaked. Because I learned about how to work around this hibernation area from this system and so many helpful Libretto users, I will share my preferred method of formatting drives around the hibernation area on Libretto 100 and 110CT's. I have done this for others many times now. The methods seems SO complicated compared to just formatting a hard drive, but trust me, these guys know what they are talking about. It is necessary. After a LOT of experimentation I only have a lot of respect for most everyone who offered me (and many others) ideas on how to work around this hard drive hibernation area on Libretto's. Here is the method I use. It requires a second computer with bios ability to see beyond the Libretto's. Most any Pentium 2 Class and up is a sure thing.) I use an adapter to plug the 2.5 drives into the full size EIDE cable of the second computer. I have used this method many times now with my two Libretto's (100CT and 110CT) so I don't know about any other models. I have also done this more than a dozen times now for others Libretto's. 1. First I use fdisk to set up the drive to its maximum size INSIDE the Libretto. It will be about 8Gig This to me is the most logical step because any issues with the Libretto bios become irrelevant because the bios in question IS making the partition. No figuring out where to leave a hibernation hole etc. 2. Then I remove the drive from the Libretto and install the adapter and place it into the second computer as a secondary drive. 3. I normally use Western Digital Lifeguard Tools usually, but other programs for setting up drives will probably work fine. I use this software to set up the remaining space on the drive into two partitions. The first partition I just set up as 100 meg or so. The second partition I set up as the rest of the drive. 4. Reboot and verify the partitions. (this just insures they were writing to disk) Now I DELETE the 100 meg partition. This insures an Operating System doesn't try to format and use it. This 100 meg area insures there is plenty of space between usable partitions for the Librettos hibernation. Because the Libretto itself set up the original 8 gig partition, the END of this partition is sure to be in the right place relative to the Libretto Hibernation. I know the hibernation might only need to be smaller, but is easier to be safe and besides that, I think the software I have used has a minimum size I can make the partition. Haven't set one up in a few months. An important note I did realize years ago after several drive corruption's! You can not turn off the Librettos hibernation function. It can be triggered by hardware independent of your OS for thermal overload and low battery conditions. SO no matter your OS, IF the Libretto tries to hibernate, it goes as far as the BIOS (specifically) can see (8.X gig) and starts it write. Instant data corruption. If I had ONLY known this years ago it would have saved me so much time formatting and replacing data. I have successfully done the above on more than a dozen Libretto 100CT's and 110CT's with basically every hard drive brand I have seen. It has been used on drives from 15gig to 100gig. I run Windows 98 on my Librettos but I have set this up for persons with other OS's. I do not install their OS's, I just set up the partitions and make them DOS bootable. It isn't as difficult as it looks at first. I can do this in a few minutes now. If you need any specifics for any of the above, just email me and I will do my best to assist you further. Most likely everything I have typed is somewhere else in this system though. I learned it all here. adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ Need a quick answer? Bad thing, as this is a good opportunity for e-mail address harvesters :-( (The list archives are publicly accessible) Subject: Re: [LIB] 110 HD upgrade?? Phil, ...Philip :-) (sorry) With the 70CT and the 100CT, you do need an overlay to get past 8 gigs. On the contrary, I have never used an overlay in my L110 and yet had full use of 15, 40 60 GB hard disks in my Lib. Admittedly you must get your HDs partitioned somehow. But even in a Lib100/110 an overlay is not necessarily needed at that stage. Just tonight I set up a 10 gig drive for my new Libby 70CT. I didn't use FDISK I used Partition Magic 8.0. It showed the drive as 8 gig drive when I partitioned it in the Libby. PM8 uses the Libby BIOS to get the drive info. The thread you started and that I replied to was about L110 upgrades, not about L70 upgrades. I'll only refer to L100/L110, as I know little about the L50/70 BIOS. ISTR that the Lib50/70 BIOS has no int13 extensions implemented... right? anyone? The stanza uses the BIOS points to the issue at hand. I'll gladly explain again (I'll promise to limit the recurrence time of my explanation to once every 1-2 years or so). OK, here we go: The L100/110 BIOS (don't know about L50/70) does have all int13 extensions implemented for access 8 GB. As a consequence you simply do NOT need an overlay - for daily use that is. Not even for DOS. But... there's a bug in the one little BIOS function which returns drive size. That function is only used at partition time, doubtlessly also at hibernation time. It apparently still uses CHS translation. Now, DOS FDISK and older versions of PM always ask the BIOS for drive size and get a wrong answer from the Libretto. Modern OS-es (Win2K, Linux, even OS/2) ask the drive itself and get a good answer. That's why I suggest to avoid DOS FDISK or PM8 for partitioning; they use a wrong answer. And once again: this problem only plays a role at partitioning hibernation time. Once a partitioning scheme incl. areas 8 GB has been set up, this whole issue is irrelevant. Taking the drive out and putting it in a USB external case I attached it to my XP desktop. Sure enough Drive management shows 1.8 gig unallocated space. That include the drive memory swap area that the Libby uses. Do not try to use this area! When the Libby sleeps it copies the contents of RAM at the 8 gig boundry and overwrites anything that is there. Indeed, in the L100/100 the hibernation area is another, related problem. On my Lib it extends up to cyl. 1026, i.e. beyond the 1024 cyl (=8.3 or so GB) limit). Luckily, hibernation uses int13 extensions (otherwise it can't extend beyond 1024 cyls), so it is a contiguous area of RAM size + video size + some BIOS data blocks. On my Lib110 I have 71 MiB reserved, and as linux /boot is immediately beyond it and I never experienced hibernation or linux problems, I know this is sufficient. BTW The fact that the hibernation area extends beyond 1024 cyls. while the start is based on CHS calculations is intriguing (but I've never bothered to do the arithmetic so it might be logical too). Summing up the technical issues: 1. Only if you want: - to partition your new 8GB hard disk INSIDE your Libretto, AND - you insist in using DOS FDISK (BTW the same as in Win98x) or PM8, ONLY THEN you need an overlay (or LDS100CT.exe for disks 32 GB, see URL below). 2. In ALL other cases, including: - daily access to partitions beyond 8 GB inside the Libretto, AND/OR - partitioning outside the Libretto, AND/OR - using anything else for partitioning than DOS FDISK or PM8, an overlay is overkill (as it merely duplicates available functionality) and it won't solve the hibernation area problem either. From a practical perspective, an overlay is an easy (but IMO dirty) fix. Sure it works (but NOT for the hibernation!) And a little warning: overlays *can* give trouble: (1) As soon as you invoke other OSes that do not need overlays and may get confused (that's why you must always pre-boot into the overlay before booting your OS). And as outlined above, even native DOS is in this category, it needs no overlay to access data 8 GB. (2) If you move your overlayed HD into another PC as second HD or external HD. Because then the overlay won't have a chance to get initialized; consequence is that you might not be able to access the data

Nothing like a mini Sega Genesis or Atari 2600 portable! =) And it still is great for a fast, quick game break (hate some of the latest games that take =forever= to startup, then forever to learn or get anywhere). But for a portable for a quick check of the web, well current Samsung D600 phone has replaced that pretty quick with Opera Mini running on it. Sure is convenient to be able to go online anywhere with a little 5oz phone! Second to that, looking into the Opera browser cartridge for the Nintendo DS Lite, but still wondering due to the slow load times reviewers have reported on this combo. --- Figure if Toshiba doesn't hurry up and replace the Libretto with a nice, powerful, tiny system with great keyboard, the Nintendo DS Lite or replacement may just replace the Libretto someday (or one of those 3G phones) --- Basically, figure Toshiba is recently all over the map with the Libretto idea -- should we make it flat and wide (L1-L5 series), should we make it shiny and a multimedia portable (U100 series)? But the orignal L20-L110 series was all about getting work done in a small package that had a decent to good keyboard and that's why it sold so well -- no fuss, just the basics, got things done. Figure if they want to release a new Libretto - simply make it around the same size as the L110, drop it a nice widescreen LCD that'll go bevel-to-bevel and maybe 1024xwhatever resolution (unlike the U100 which didn't use all of that space to any good), keep the good parts of the U100, bring back the 180 degree folding LCD screen, drop in a better keyboard and more sensible touchpad/mouse pointer, make sure the battery doesn't stick out the back, drop in the latest super-low power processors so you can kick the fan out the door, have a decent graphics subsystem, and make it last at least 4 hours non-stop like the L110 and we'll be happy to upgrade for $1000 or so. All that crazy pricing at $1700+ when a notebook sells for $500 on sale nowadays is just killing the adoption of new Librettos. (Here, at least Panasonic W/Y series make sense at the same weight, although not the same size -- they're tough enough to sit on w/o breaking anything at the $2k range!) Oh, welll. in the meantime, the rest of the market like Sony U series, etc. will just have to run rings around the Libretto Sure hope Toshiba comes out with a sleek showstopper Libretto soon! esp. before killer super-mini Windows PDA phones like the Samsung i320 gets so powerful, they'll simply blow any Libretto replacement away: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i320-review-103.php BTW. check out the latest W-Zero ES out in Japan - talk about nice for a portable Windows PDA phone! adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ __ Do You Yahoo!? Now the next steps are to research the specs for solar panels (voltage/current/light-diagrams) and to search for a 15V stabilizer which operates lower input-voltage. Perhaps it is worth to look to the original 12V-Adapter. - My first idea was to avoid this extra piece... :-(( They do have electronic power supplies that run off what? charge-pump theory, that will boost a lower voltage source to a fixed voltage source you want. I think one of the most common usages is in LED flashlights. A battery fluctuates over time, and the voltage is often lower than needed to power a LED, so these converters boost the voltage to a higher one and allow you to power the device just fine off lower voltage batteries. In any case, I'm sure a quick search will do it One idea is to see if there are any car chargers out there that can power the Libretto(I think there are - search Mailing List archives). Then, you can easily start with a lower input voltage, and rely on the charger to boost the power to something the Libretto can use. but the problem here is to see if the charger can handle a wide input voltage fluctuation, or if what you really need is another power supply converter Of course, the other idea would be to simply see if there's a way to expand the battery pack out front by another set of cells -- then, you can run up to 6-8 hours on a single charge. adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ __ Do You Yahoo!? Get ready to squint hard! (and I thought their last U50/U70 series had absurdly small screens with too-high resolutions!) Chicklet keys are back again, but one wonders how bad they are to type on (the prior U series with tiny keyboards were no good). And one wonders why? They could have easily dropped in a more usable keyboard by simply installing a wide-screen, like a 7 or larger LCD panel (GPS on a 4 screen will hurt!). They could have kept the same weight - we know that from their prior Vaio X505 series, which had a larger screen and keyboard. And they could have integrated a built-in GPS unit (why use an external one at all?!?) for the $2000 it'll cost. When I searched around 2-3 years ago, the problem was that there were no CF / IDE adapters at that time that could fit into the HD slot properly. Thus, I simply went to eBay, and picked up a 2.5 6.x mm solid state flash drive replacement cheap instead. These drives work fine, and are basically the same thing as your idea. Sandisk.com has a bunch of them. Search around and you may find CF / IDE adapters that'll fit nowadays. But, GPS-wise, I'm using MapPoint 2004 on my L110 and it's limited by the CPU and graphics processor speed mostly. Looking for 125, will consider offers though. Not sure what the problem is, sometimes it boots into Windows then freezes and won't re-boot, othertimes it gets as far as the Toshiba opening screen then won't go any further. One likely possibility that resembles what you describe is a failing hard drive. Old hard drives will fail over time, and the easiest 'fix' is to drop in a new 9.5mm 2.5 HD. If you have one as a spare, you can easily swap the hard drives and see if it'll boot correctly. Another way to see if it's the rest of the laptop or the HD is to boot from a floppy disk and see if the machine consistantly boots from the floppy disk. If it does, then it's most likely a hard drive problem. --- For the L110, it's either a Toshiba or IBM HD. Toshiba does not have any low-level diagnostic programs for download; ibm does at www.hgst.com. The latter, you can use to diagnose and check the HD to see if it's failing. d =) adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ __ Do You Yahoo!? Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2006 15:19:44 -0800 (PST) From: David Chien [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [LIB] Margi DVD-To-Go problems Have you been successful yourself at transcoding widescreen 2:39:1 anamorphic, letterboxed 720x480 video files to non-anamorphic, non-letterboxed video files that stretch to the full width of the 100/110's 800 pixel screen using Windows Media Player v6 David? H, the last time I came across a 2.39:1 movie was when?. No, I haven't because all of the movies I've been watching are 16:9 or 4:3. But it's just as easy to convert as 16:9 films. 1) Run DVD Decrypter to pull a region/protection free copy to the hard drive first for faster processing (otherwise, run AnyDVD for live rendering). 2) Get the latest DVDx 2.4 at www.videohelp.com. 3) Open the movie you want to convert. In the INPUT SETTINGs of DVDx make sure you have audio/video sync checked (otherwise, they'll be out of sync). Select appropriate frame rate, etc. to match the original. 4) In the OUTPUT SETTINGs, here's where magic occurs. Make sure you have FULL 16:9 or 4:3 selected for the output ratio (not letterboxed, not custom). This will stretch the video to fit the full frame you specify. Next specify the resolution. Here, you'll use a 2.39:1 ratio. Thus, if you output a full 800xsomething pixel video, it'll be 800x334 setting. You can pick a lower setting such as 512x214 to fit the 2.39:1 ratio if you so desire. 5) Simply pick the codec you want, eg. Divx or Xvid, and make sure you don't resize, crop, etc. what's being output from DVDx (this ensures you're getting the full frame of the original). 1-pass, 1000-2000kbps will generally give you good quality across most movies, but you may need to adjust depending. (see www.cdfreaks.com and www.videohelp.com forums for help) 6) when you play back this video full-screen, the side-to-side will fit the full width of the 800 pixel screen, but the top-bottom will have letterboxing due to the dissimilar ratio. 2.39:1 is not the same as 800x480. (You can stretch it vertically if you desire, simply adjust step 4 above to use a 800:480 ratio.) 7) Voila! done. adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ __ Do You Yahoo!? I'm sure one of the other HD makers will soon have PATA connector type models in this size soon. It's unknown at this time if 132GB HDs will work properly in the older Librettos due to various BIOS/Hardware limitations even with a disk manager installed. I've been keeping ZA updated to the newest versions for security purposes. The newer versions take much more time to boot than the older ones did. I still run ZA 2.6.something on all my Windows installations You must have a Pro version installed, not the free version that is 2.6.362 comes in both free and pro versions (in fact, every ZA after that comes in at least two verisons, free pro - latest ones have added more). You can simply download and use the free version for as long as you want forever. You do note the presence of ZA on your system after you've installed it on a clean 98SE setup, but it launches fast enough for me that I'm not worried or have ever complained about it. (Heck, SeaMonkey launches slower! - my #1 pick of web browser + email program.) It does take up a bit more RAM, so on my system, I'm close to being out of physical RAM with that running after a Win98SE startup, but it's not bad by any means - ie. I can surf just as fast on the net, system feels responsive, nothing sluggish about it. One way to take the 'bootup' delay out of your life is to enable HIBERNATION and do that all the time. It's a lot quicker, and I'm in and out of Windows fast if I ever need to do it. (Still, I often shutdown completely because I don't want my email messages to be in an unknown-state if something goes wrong; and the machine still boots fast enough for me - L110 w/64MB RAM.) -- I've tried other programs out there, and I've used Sygate before for the more 'exacting' control over what goes in and out of my system. But over the years, I'm back to running ZA on my systems simply because it does the job, and no intrusions get in. I tend to run the latest versions on my fast systems, 2.6.362 on my slower systems - but no real differences between the two that I've noticed. (Which probably means except for the bug fixes listed on their website, it's probably a yearly-upgrade-for-profits-game -- eg. McAfee or Norton 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, etc. just to get more money out of their buyers.) Luckily, 2.6.362 seems to be a very solid firewall, so no big problems running it all day long. Sygate is also the same - have servers running it for years w/o any intrusions getting past it. adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ __ Do You Yahoo!? Solid product and I'm satisfied with them. Keep in mind that you should also look at each drive's power ratings for spin up, read, write, and sleep. The drives that use more will result in shorter battery life, but perhaps in exchange for faster performance. It will be something to keep in mind. Also, drives that use more power in these operations tend to run hotter. www.tomshardware.com and others sites have good reviews on 100GB HDs. Myself, I'd go with the Seagate or Toshiba, if not a Hitachi/IBM. Obviously, a very expensive drive vs. the $200 120GB 100GB HDs out earlier. Good for newer Librettos that can handle the larger HDs w/o a drive image overlay program; older Librettos (probably everything below a Libretto L1 series) w/o UDMA IDE connectors most likely will have trouble handling anything over the ~120GB too-old BIOS limit. (Of course, we won't know for sure unless someone buys and tests, but probably ) Thus, for now, the =120GB HDs out on the market will most likely be the 'largest' 2.5 HD you can drop into any Libretto from the L20 on up (you'll need to use a drive overlay program, do fancy formatting/fdisking per prior posted threads, or use an OS such as W2K/WXP/Linux that supports HDs larger than what the Libretto BIOS can see by itself). The 120GB HDs will require BIOS support of this + HW support of large HDs, and it's unknown at this time if any Libretto can correctly function and see the entire 120GB HD, even with a drive overlay program. Nevertheless, it is a good HD to use to upgrade modern, regular laptops, and this will allow users with 3-drive bays on their laptops to upgrade to a 1/2 tetrabyte of online storage on their laptops =) adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ __ Do You Yahoo!? Therefore, your boot drive partition will have a maximum size of 137GB.! Therefore, even with a drive overlay program, you'll only see 137GB of drives larger than that under Windows 98SE on the Librettos. You can't exceed this limit at all due to the OS constraints. (ie. move up to W2K,WXP instead) W2K would be the 'best' choice for a slow Libretto due to the limited RAM available, and preferably, only on the Libretto 100/110 or newer systems (the older ones have too little RAM and CPU speed IMO). On the flip side, the Libretto U100 is now selling for as low as $1500 new (www.shopper.com), so in a few more months, it may well be a great upgrade for older Libretto owners who want a little more power and features, but a small notebook. Those who don't care should look at the $850 Sony FS810 notebook on sale this week at BestBuy.com stores! An excellent DVD burning notebook cheap that'll do quite a lot w/o spending too much. (Yes, you can get faster models and spend $$$, but that's always the case.) Those wanting even cheaper can get the HP/Compaq on sale for about $500, but I'd avoid it due to the lower reliability of HP/Compaq laptops over the past several years in PC Mag and PC World rankings. adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ __ Do You Yahoo!? Anyways, back from TOkyo and still unpacking In Tokyo, Sofmap Akihabara just outside the JR station had used U100 models for 169,000 Yen (about $1500usd) on regular price, so that's still high for this model. I'm sure if I caught their sales, it would have been even cheaper. Still, after looking at them, I'm not convinced the U100 models are ideal for any purpose - the Fujitsu Loox and the Sony T series are still much more 'usable' in form factor, keyboard layout and design. When I saw and used them in Tokyo, I personally would have picked one of these two rather than the Libretto (keyboard screen far too small not all-in-one optical drive design). The Fujitsu keyboard is particularly crisp and responsive to touch typing, and was my favorite (not counting the fact that it has a TV tuner, too!). You can buy all three in the USA at this time from the makers. Aside from that, Sony TR2A series were down to 99,000 ($1000), which is good, but you can get the same off ebay.com here in the USA. Sony U1/U3 series (Crusoe models) were around the $500-600 price range, but too slow to be worth buying at that price. Interestingly, the prices of notebooks have dropped so fast in the USA (eg. $199 for a new Toshiba notebook at Microcenter.com the friday after thanksgiving this year; $500 average new notebook most stores), it's simply not even worth buying a notebook in Tokyo anymore. I simply didn't see anything that was a deal or steal, and in fact, most were ripoffs at 2-4x the price of a USA notebook of the same model! (eg. Sony FS series here for $1000-1100; in Japan $2300+ for the low end models!) Given the rapid internationalization of product distribution, you really, really had to push hard to find any deals at all that was worth purchasing in Tokyo vs. at home imported (esp. since almost everything there can be bought outside Japan). Even if you can't find it at home, Yahoo Auctions Japan typically has most products far cheaper. eg. Casio XD-470 dictionary for 130,000 Yen in most stores; 68,000 Yen new on Yahoo Auctions Japan. The only happy place? Akihabara station facing Yodabashi Akiba, they had a new 99 yen store open there. Given the stronger dollar, that's about 83 yen to buy something that would normally cost 99 yen. Best bargin I found? 99 yen mini pliers (hey, i needed one anyways). You can also find drinks, gift bags, and other useful nicnacks there for 99 yen. adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ __ Yahoo! for Good - Make a difference this year. http://brand.yahoo.com/cybergivingweek2005/

Of course, few of us can afford to wrap our Librettos inside a cooler while using it, so naturally, we'll have to deal with the shorter battery life expected from using our laptops in normal temperature ranges. =) adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ __ Do You Yahoo!? Most laptops don't require this, and I do vaguely recall seeing one article in Japanese that showed even the ff1100v HD replacement being quite easy - simply undo the screws, lift the top off one side of the Libretto so that it hinges upward, replace the HD, and close it back up. Re: [LIB] 110CT Large Drives with EZ BIOS...
Date: Sun, 13 Nov 2005 10:58:11 -0800 (PST) From: David Chien [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [LIB] 110CT Large Drives with EZ BIOS... for the l100 -110 models the hibernation location at 8gb lies in the bios itself . Toshiba didn t design it to handle hd larger than 8gb and arbitrarily fixed it rather than make it more flexible. Also the bios has a reported problem already posted where it doesnt pick up the size of hds larger than 8gb correctly. These two could be fixed wo the use of a drive overlay program if toshiba or a skilled bios programmer fixed this. Win 2k xp and linux are smart enough to find out how big a hd actually is wo a drive overlay but none can bypassthe hardware hibernation location . Of course you could only have one big partition if you think you will never start a hardware hibernation by accident - which would overwrite any of your files there. One thing that has not been tried is to use one big partition but to put a big unmovable empty file at the 8gb location. This way you might easily bypass the two partition need on large hds. --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Date: Sun, 13 Nov 2005 12:28:55 +1100 From: Raymond [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [LIB] 110CT Large Drives with EZ BIOS... Hello Raymond and thank you for your reply... I was amazed at how this topic was discussed so much over the years with no real end result that I could determine. It depends on what you mean by a real end result :-) If the end result is a setup that works, well that's already a given - we know that drive overlay + partitions up to the 8GB mark + blank space + following partitions (and booting off a sub-8GB partition) works ... it may be sub-optimal but it works :-D The result that hasn't been achieved is having everyone agree on what ISN'T possible, the primary split being those who believe that there isn't a way of moving the hibernation partition and those that believe a disk overlay can do it (and a smaller split who believe no drive overlay is necessary - which is sorta true depending on your operating system). Note that there is no dispute that the solution above will work for both camps, it's just the latter camp believe there's also another solution. It took many days to read the full archives. I know the feeling - there's a lot of stuff there! :-) The search engine does help but of course that isn't much use if you don't have the right search terms. I wonder if at some point there'll be a Libretto Wiki, especially if the new Librettos keep coming out ... might make life a little easier for people like yourself :-D The BIOS HDD 8.4 seems like a simple thing. Sort of a Yes/No to me. A No of course is not what I wanted to hear. Also because much of the information did not apply to the 100/100 directly I hoped it might be outdated at least for these last two CT Models. I will gladly accept the No at this point. :) I'm having a little trouble parsing your paragraph but I think the no you refer to is the BIOS itself not recognising anything over the approx 8GB mark (I can't remember the exact number of cylinders but you would have run into them in the archives!). In which case yes the answer is no :-) This all leads back to a previous question however... I have allowed this computer to hibernate a number of times now since safely duplicating the drive. The drive is full less 1/2 gig or so free. I opened up a number of browsers and spreadsheets etc to make certain the memory would have been completely full when written to disk. I realize that Scandisk is NOT a high level tool, but I simply can not believe it can't find a 64meg damaged spot on the hard drive, which hibernation should have caused. Is it inaccurate to believe Hibernation should have blown the formatting, data, everything on that area of the disk? Nope it will have blown a hole in that part of the drive but because FAT32/FAT16 doesn't actually have any way of tallying that up nicely it may not detect it (and I can also now say that NTFS also doesn't always detect it, having just had a hole blown in my hard drive on an unrelated laptop). The way some have found this area is to use some low level disk tool (Norton DiskEdit springs to mind) to write zeros (0x00) across the suspected part of the drive, hibernate then see where the contents have changed.
