[LIB] SONY LIT-ION FROM ALL ELECTRONICS

2002-06-12 Thread JIM6360

Date: Wed, 12 Jun 2002 17:48:12 EDT
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: SONY LIT-ION FROM ALL ELECTRONICS

OK, I have read enough input on the list that I haven't been willing to go
poking around with Li-Ion batteries outside of a pack, BUT on the front page
of my latest All Electronics (www.allelectronics.com) catalog, they have the
following:

3.6 volt 1200 mah Lithium-ion cell.
Sony #18650, rechargeable wt solder tabs.
.72 dia., 2.56 long.
$3.50 each, $3.00 each in lots of 50

So what happened to the can't buy by individual?
no charging warning?
No mushroom cloud icon?

If someone else has discussed these recently, beg your pardon, blame it on
age, out of town, inability to comprehend, etc.

Only 105F today!

Pres, so far, so good, but not bragging. The standard battery that came with
my 50 is still going strong. Likewise the enhanced one I bought from Kim in
the first year I had the 50. She got stuck with it when she upgraded to a 100
and they wouldn't take it back as new, so it was really new.

I think the Lib is four years old. Got it new from Computer City when they
cut the price to $699? I don't know what determines the life of a Lithium
Ion. Mine is on AC 24 hours a day and is only on battery when I go to the
library and read e-mail or take a trip. I the car I use the PS you made.

The only other Li-Ion I have used are on cell phones. None of them has gone
south. Technology makes the phone obsolete before the batteries go bad.

No help I know, but they have had good service life for me.

Well, I suppose that it also depends on what your own personal definition of
what expensive is, but I suspect that the US does enjoy better pricing on
computer equipment and gadgetry than many other countries.

Due to the weakness of the Canadian dollar things just look more expensive
$200-$300 is actually $300-$450 CDN. In addition, our lower salaries and
higher income taxes PLUS the additional 15% in sales taxes makes it FEEL
really expensive too. No wonder Canadian culture is based around misshapen
 donuts and beer...

That said, I should say that I'm happy that I don't have to endure
Australian prices and their funny electrical plug shapes...

Yes, I would say that we do not appreciate what we have that is good. Neil
and his squeeze mentioned when they visited about Americans being somewhat
opinionated and un-knowledgeable about the rest of the world. Sorry to say
the only time I get a different view is when I listen to the BBC or the CNN
international corespondents. We seldom have the opportunity to walk in the

That's the way it always is. After Pres has spoken, there is nothing left to
say, until someone else comes up with an otherwise insolvable problem and
Pres get an opportunity to review his mail and reply. This coming in between
board and research committee meetings plus his international trips for
various agencies for which he is a consultant.

The list is truly fortunate for his and Neil's membership. The difficulty
with Neil's posts is they have to be translated into American. Of course Neil
has not experienced many of our problems as they have that funny power over
there. Neil also is at a disadvantage in that Pres has solved most problems
before Neil gets a chance at them. (GMT+ 1 and all that)

Time for a nap, been up since 08:00 and 09:30 is fast approaching.

An other "English" lesson for me Neil. Is this equal to "American" crap? I
didn't know if I should be offended or not.

The wondering off subject has kept the list alive through about three
generations now. First those of us that bought new, then the people that
discovered the Lib after it was only available recycled. And now the
re-recyclers. I love it.

I have learned a lot here and often now can pass it on to newbies as they
explore this cult machine.

I have a couple of mapping programs, the Thomas Maps LA/Orange County
software, and Rand McMally's Streetfinder/TripMaker 2000. The problem with
these programs is that they don't allow you to copy the contents of the CD
to the HDD, and have the program access the data from there. They insist
 on
having the original retail copy for the CD in the CD-ROM drive... a real
pain when I'm traveling with my 50CT. I'm guessing that your Street Atlas
USA program does not have this restriction, right?

 Matt

Matt: I mentioned "Norton Virtual Drive" being on the same disc as Ghost. I
use the VD program on both the Lib and my desktop. The desktop thinks it has
19 drives. 5 real, floppy, HD, CD, CD writer, zip. The other 14 are virtual
drives, Print Shop and Print Master both have 6 or 7 discs, plus I have
Garmin Roads and Rec. for the GPS III +, DeLorme Topo for SW topo maps and
3D. All programs run from the VD discs. In the Lib I just have the RR and
Topo for on the road and the GPS. No need to drag along a CD drive.

If you have the disc space it eliminates a lot of hassle.

I install the program from the Virtual drive so that it knows where to find
the data.

HELP, loosing mind!

Subject: HELP, loosing mind!

OK, nothing new, but in this case I care.

Tws reading mail at around 5 am and someone mentioned "system monitor" to
check on resources. Nice, found it on the Lib Win 95 and installed it. Cute.

But when I checked the machines running 98, not to be found!

Here is the losing mind part. I cannot find the post. In it as well this kind
sole also listed a site to download a similar program.

After having read through the 40 or so posts twice, I either am missing it
because of the subject or I deleted it instead of the hot babes Spam.
(Doctors orders, constant rate pace maker)

Anyone, anyone out there that can point me in the proper direction will
receive my undying gratitude. Which I might add is worth more than one of my
checks.

As for me, I am still running Word 6.0, it is way smarter than I am. The

Yes Sir, right away Sir and Thank you Sir!

Reminds me of the meter I had for a year before I realized that the fuzzy
view was caused by a plastic shipping film that I had not removed. I removed
it and everything was clear. Then I scratched it and was upset. Then
something else happened under Fluke three year warranty and it came back with
a new face and new shipping film. This time I did not remove the film and as
a result have never scratched the face and don't even notice the fuzz. Kind
of like an antiglare treatment. If it does come off someday, I will put one
of the Palm Pilot protectors on it.

That story is a long way from what I wanted to say which is: "Thanks"

a short time after getting it, installing a 9.5mm HDD w/o removing the
foam.

Intermittent lockups began. Replaced the old HDD. Better. Now it is dead.

Is there some kind soul with the tools and expertise to solder the memory
on

the motherboard? I will pay any reasonable price.

Failing this, does anyone need a Viking memory upgrade or a Lib50 screen
with

I would suggest Neil, I am sure given enough time he could fix it. He has a
blow torch that will fix anything from a Lib to a 4" leaking pipe.

Seriously, in the previous cases of this type of failure, (2 or 3 plus
years) I do not recall anyone salvaging the failed motherboard.

No second opinions as to my brain action please. I am quite satisfied with my

BTW, Has anyone else noticed that the Brits don't know how to spell

A suggestion for those, like me that don't live in a cold, damp, gray
atmosphere like some, I close the lid until the screen tone sounds. That way
the lid is still open about one half inch (2.54 centimeters). That improves
the ventilation and decreases the likelihood of a thermal shutdown.

I also put the modem in the dock PCMCIA slot which removes the heat from the
Lib. Those are my dock operation suggestions.

Thermal shutdown shouldn't be a problem today, coldwave, only 103 degrees F
(39.5C) today. Ahhh, cl !

Considering the rate that the BBC pays talent like Neil, the personal time he

I bet Neil could fix you up in nothing flat. He seems to have a lot of "junk"
laptops over in his flat. It is reported that Peter Sellers once lived there.

Dictionary: "flat" in first line is American for zero time lapse. "flat" in
second line is English for apartment. Peter Sellers in the third line was an
original English computer graphic product. From the super secrete UK WW II
computer which ran on British hot air because of wartime rationing.

My apologies for that last one. I was just trying to think of something that
was never rationed during the war.

The answer is: [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
However I am confused about your question.
If you can post to this list, doesn't that mean
that you are already on the list?

  Ken Akiba

Yes, I am on the list, but Dan blocked a number of people that might have
been part of the problem when we were getting 10-20 copies of each post. I
don't think it was anything the person did, just how their address reacted
with the lists software.

So Pres has to write Dan to bypass the block which would allow him to

Yes, this is peel as in grape, not peal as in bell. Happy to have provided
