Re: What is the maximum amount of memory supported by SLES10

2012-08-13 Thread Filipe Miranda
Hello Ron,

I guess the theoretical limit amount of memory supported by the Linux kernel
is 4TB, but I guess each vendor (Suse or Red Hat) has the amount that was
tested and is currently supported by them.

From the Suse website the max amount of theoretical memory is 4TB but only
250GB is supported by them as the URL shows:
http://www.suse.com/products/systemz/technical-information/#Kernel

I do know that Red Hat Enterprise Linux supports up 3TB of memory (supported by
Red Hat Inc,) as this URL mention:

Re: RHEL 6.2 will not IPL

2012-08-21 Thread Filipe Miranda
Michael,

I think you best shot for now is to start RHEL in init 1 or Single user mode,
and put SELinux in permissive mode.
If it works, probably RACF is not behaving well with SELinux.

If you need help with that, let me know,

Re: IBM V7000 & Thin Provisioning & btrfs on RH

2012-09-11 Thread Filipe Miranda
Hello Lee,

From the technical notes for the 6.3
https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html-single/6.3_Technical_Notes/index.html#storage_and_fs_tp
Btrfs, BZ#614121
Btrfs is under development as a file system capable of addressing and managing
more files, larger files, and larger volumes than the ext2, ext3, and ext4 file
systems. Btrfs is designed to make the file system tolerant of errors, and to
facilitate the detection and repair of errors when they occur. It uses
checksums to ensure the validity of data and metadata, and maintains snapshots
of the file system that can be used for backup or repair. The Btrfs Technology
Preview is only available on AMD64 and Intel 64 architectures.

Btrfs is still experimental
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 includes Btrfs as a technology preview to allow you
to experiment with this file system. You should not choose Btrfs for partitions
that will contain valuable data or that are essential for the operation of
important systems.
Package: btrfs-progs-0.19-12

More info on btrfs:
https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/techbriefs/introduction-btrfs
I will find out more info on btrfs for RHEL on System z and get back to you.

Re: RHEL 5.7

2012-10-17 Thread Filipe Miranda
Hello Srinivas,

First access this URL and login with your RHN account:
https://www.redhat.com/wapps/sso/login.html?redirect=https://access.redhat.com/subscriptions/rhntransition/

Go to the tab Downloads, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, option Downloads.

Choose Red Hat Enterprise Linux (v.4 64-bit IBM System z), then go to Older
Releases (at the bottom of the page)
Then you will find the RHEL 5.7 for System z

if you have any problems, let me know,

PS: You must have a System z entitlement (RHEL for System z subscription) to
have access to the Enterprise content on RHN.

Re: RHEL 6.3 DASD configuration

2013-02-19 Thread Filipe Miranda
Hello Larry,

I tried a few times the Text Only installation method just to make sure and if
you can't get X Windows or VNC to work, I suggest a installation using a
kickstart file - using kickstart you can setup the partition method that you
want and have an unattended installation of the OS.
The Text Only installation mode won't let you define the disks as you mentioned
(at least during my tests it did not let me do it)

About VNC:
How did you setup your PARM file?
vnc vncpassword= mpath (does it look like this at the end?)

also when it asks you to connect via ssh, did you use the ssh -x install@IP
("-x")  ?

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4 is now available - check the specific features for System z

2013-02-28 Thread Filipe Miranda
. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4 now supports SCAP 1.2.
System administrators can now define the amount of time that must lapse before
an account is considered inactive. This automates locking inactive accounts and
closes the gap during which these accounts can be exploited.

Productivity Tools
Evolution now interoperates better with Microsoft Exchange. Productivity
functions such as calendar support with alarm notification and meeting
scheduling are improved.
Customers such as animation studios and graphic design houses now have support
for the newer Wacom Intuos tablets.
We greatly appreciate the dedication and collaboration within the company and
with our partners and community to develop and deliver the highest quality open
source enterprise platform available today.

Bellow is a summary of the technical features for RHEL6.4 just for reference:

Hello Tom,

If you are installing from scratch, just add as many disks are necessary
(3390-9) to the VM that you are trying to install Fedora.
During the installation, you will probably have to configure LVM volumes in the
disk layout part of the installer to accommodate the the package selection you
chose for Fedora.

Re: any good recommendations for an HA tool on zSeries?

2013-10-04 Thread Filipe Miranda
Hi Collinson,

Sine Nomine's SNA HAO for RHEL on z is basically the Red Hat's source code
recompiled for s390x arch, with the addition of the fencing mechanism to
interface with z/VM, fully supported by Sine Nomine (an ISV Red Hat Partner).
The SNA HAO offers features like: Fail-over HA, Clustered File System (GFS2)
and Load Balancing (ipvs).
AFAIK SNA already have customers running the SNA HAO for RHEL on z in
production environments, right David?
During the event
Enterprise2013(http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/enterprise/systemz.html) in
Orlando, during the Red Hat's session there will be a live demo of the SNA HAO
for RHEL on IBM System z by Neale.

Kind Regards,
Filipe Miranda

Re: RedHat install

2014-03-18 Thread Filipe Miranda
Hi David,

Fedora uses a new format - not sure if the old CMS style will be available - or
if it is - it is on compatibility mode

Try this instead:
F20.parm

ro ramdisk_size=4 cio_ignore=all,!0.0.0009
ip=:::21::eth0:none
rd.znet=qeth,0.0.0600,0.0.0601,0.0.0602,layer2=0,portname=FOOBAR,portno=0
nameserver= nameserver=
rd.dasd=0.0.0100 rd.dasd=0.0.0101
inst.repo=http:///Server/s390x/os/
vnc vncpassword=test

F20.exec

/* */
'CL RDR'
'PURGE RDR ALL'
'SPOOL PUNCH * RDR'
'PUNCH F20-KERNEL IMG A (NOH'
'PUNCH F20 PARM A (NOH'
'PUNCH F20-INITRD IMG A (NOH'
'CH RDR ALL KEEP NOHOLD'
'I 00C'

Re: Installing RHEL 7

2014-09-16 Thread Filipe Miranda
Mike,

Use this as an example:

> ro ramdisk_size=4 cio_ignore=all,!condev
> ip=10.16.105.69::10.16.111.254:21:train6.redhat.com:enccw0.0.0600:none

> rd.dasd=0.0.0100 rd.dasd=0.0.0101
> inst.repo=http://10.13.145.5/rhel7_s390/  or
> inst.repo=nfs:[options:]server:/path
> vnc vncpassword=redhat

Where:
The documentation explains the semantics of all the bits and pieces:
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/7/html/Installation_Guide/chap-anaconda-boot-options.html#list-boot-options-network
The upstream docs might explain the double colon, which is just an
optional "peer" option that is not needed in our case:
https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/boot/dracut/dracut.html#_network
"ip=:[]
:{none|off|dhcp|on|any|dhcp6|auto6|ibft}:[:[][:]]
"
or
"ip=:[]
:{none|off|dhcp|on|any|dhcp6|auto6|ibft}[:[][:]] "
" is optional and is the address of the remote endpoint for
pointopoint interfaces"

If one does not follow the ip= syntax to the very last detail, it just
fails (or falls back to dhcp) without helpful user message [see more
recent pre-validation comments of bug 1070104].

or

Try Neale suggestion - it also worked :-)

Kind Regards,

Filipe

Hello Stuart,

The architecture level for RHEL7 is z196/z114 and above - no z10 support from
this point forward (z10 only with RHEL5 and RHEL6)

Re: Custom Layout

2015-06-18 Thread Filipe Miranda
Hi Matt,

To create an LVM volume is quite simple:

1) First you need to set the partition or disk as a Physical Device for the LVM
2) Then you have to create a Volume Group
3) Create the Logical Volumes that will be part of the Volume Group

More information can be found here:
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html/Logical_Volume_Manager_Administration/

<https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html/Logical_Volume_Manager_Administration/>

Page 106 from this guide shows how to create a custom layout:
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/pdf/Installation_Guide/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux-6-Installation_Guide-en-US.pdf

<https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/pdf/Installation_Guide/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux-6-Installation_Guide-en-US.pdf>
Its the same on all platforms.

Thank you,

Kind Regards,

Filipe Miranda

2015-07-20 Thread Filipe Miranda
Hello,

RHEL7.x can use the same “installation style” (parm file and conf file) as
before with a few minor changes (keep in mind that this will be deprecated in
the future), or the new “installation layout” (just the parm file).
The following slide deck shows examples of how the new parm file should look
like:

Rick,

Please make sure that the VM have at least 1GB of RAM. (I had similar problems

2015-07-21 Thread Filipe Miranda
Rick,

Could you send us the complete parm file ?
Are you installing on ECKD or FCP?
Were the disks used for this Linux install in use before or are they brand new?
Maybe something old from a previous use of the disk is causing some weird
behave by the installer, have you tried to low format the disks from a terminal
and then tried the installation again? I haven' t seem any issues like that on
RHEL 7.x. Yet :-)

Kind Regards,
Filipe Miranda

Re: Linux 7.1 on z/VM 6.3

2015-07-22 Thread Filipe Miranda
Hello Rick,

Everything seems to be in order on that PARM file.

The only option I haven’t tried yet from this PARM is to force the resolution
by using the inst.resolution=1024x768 parameter, but I’m not sure if that
maybe causing some weird behavior by the VNC client/server piece.
I know it sounds silly, but could you try with the following PARM file:

ro ramdisk_size=4 cio_ignore=all,!condev
ip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx::xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:22:lnxmnt71.marriott.com:enccw0.0.0500:none
rd.znet=qeth,0.0.0500,0.0.0501,0.0.0502,layer2=0
nameserver=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
rd.dasd=0.0.0200 rd.dasd=0.0.0300 rd.dasd=0.0.0301
inst.vnc
inst.vncpassword=
inst.repo=nfs:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:/var/opt/rhel71

if that fails again, does the installer gives you any hint of what might have
happened? Are you able to get a shell access ?

Thank you,

Kind Regards,
Filipe Miranda

Re: Linux 7.1 on z/VM 6.3 - standard files

2015-07-22 Thread Filipe Miranda
Hi Raymond,

INITRD.IMG, KERNEL.IMG, GENERIC.PRM and REDHAT.EXEC are the files required to
install RHEL5, RHEL6 and RHEL7.

With RHEL5 and RHEL6 - optionally (but recommended) a CONF file was added to
facilitate the installation process as described in this IBM Redbook:
https://books.google.com/books?id=GHzJAgAAQBAJ&pg=PA151&source=gbs_toc_r&cad=4#v=onepage&q&f=false

<https://books.google.com/books?id=GHzJAgAAQBAJ&pg=PA151&source=gbs_toc_r&cad=4#v=onepage&q&f=false>

Now with RHEL7 you can still use the same method as RHEL6, I strongly recommend
to use the new installation method described in this other IBM Redbook (because
the old method will be deprecated):
http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redpieces/abstracts/sg248303.html?Open
<http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redpieces/abstracts/sg248303.html?Open>

Kind Regards,
Filipe Miranda

Re: Docker on Z

2016-10-25 Thread Filipe Miranda
Just a thought:

Have you seem Origin Openshift? The community version can be built on Linux for
z Systems:
https://github.com/linux-on-ibm-z/docs/wiki/Building-OpenShift-Origin

IBM actually did all the heavy lifting porting the components from x86 to s390x.
Origin Openshift can help you to manage the resources using containers to
provide a DevOps environment.

automatically obtained values will be used for the others.

Keep in mind that the NETMASK must be in CIDR format.

Re: Red Hat/ClefOS configuration file

2018-05-22 Thread Filipe Miranda
Hi,

Is this a network install ? If yes, the the installer is not able to find your
installation tree. This is why Step #3 is falling.

on the GENERIC.PRM you have to define the install tree:

Example:
inst.repo=http://download.lab.bos.redhat.com/released/RHEL-7/7.0/Server/s390x/os

I prefer http, its fast and easy once you have the contents available though
the web server.

Kind Regards,
