Sanga, As the former acting PRO I should probably give answering your query a go. The idea of the ICTAU is to form a associate membership body for IT professionals across the breadth of the IT Sector in Uganda. Your exactly the type of person we would like to have in the organisation. Someone who has good practical experience of working in IT and has an interest in improving and expanding the IT Sector in Uganda. It is early days so I can not say we have achieved vast amount, how ever we do already have good and close ties within the IT Industry and Government. One key role is to be able to actually lobby government effectively about issues facing our industry. As someone who has been outspoken about various issues on this forum, your voice would be an invaluable one to add. Especially in adding a practical knowledge of Open Source Solutions and how they can best suit Uganda. One role we have yet to fill is the representative from the LUG to the ICTAU. I have rec used myself, a) As I was on the forming committee b) Currently not living in Uganda. c) Too busy by far. This role is to me similar to the idea we came up with some months ago for OPTA, and the goals of that organisation I think could be filled by the LUG Committee/Chair. When are you next in town? Would be happy to setup a meeting with some of the board members if that would help? Simon On 10 October 2013 15:54, sanga collins sanga.coll...@gmail.com wrote: Just got an invite to join ICTAU. Sanga, I'm also a founding member though, like Simon, am not super active in its operations. It's early days but I believe it has potential so long as everyone's voices (i.e. industry, community, etc) are fairly represented when lobbying and other ICTAU related activites occur. Re: [LUG] ICTAU worth it?
The member fees are not too bad in my opinion. They have several tiers depending on if how you want to be involved. Simon: I am hoping to be back in Kampala next spring. No solid dates yet since I need to clear it with work first, but I would be glad to meet with some of the members. I too would not be able to fill the role of LUG rep, but that wont stop me from being involved. Peter, Whilst we do not as yet have a formal charter, it is one thing we would like members to create and eventually adhere too. I seem to be copy and pasting the website. http://ictau.ug/general-benefits/ The General benefits of being a member of ICTAU include the following; - Strong Avenue for competitive networks - Widest communication coverage via the ICTAU mailing list - Social capital engine - Jobline opportunities for members - Platform for sharing success stories and management experience - Source for highly skilled and competent persons - Safeguard interests of institutions - Access to information - Posting information on mailing for wider reach - Clarification of true identity - Organized addresses, databases for research and easy access to members In order for us to perform some of the above roles we would need to accredit and check the qualifications of the members. So in answer at the moment the accreditation is being done by us. Eventually we will make it both an national and hopefully an internationally recognized accreditation. We are recognized by both the Ministry of ICT and NITA(U) and have their blessings and support. Re: [LUG] ICTAU worth it?
Mark, Agreed. I think one thing the founder members felt was doing it the 'hard' way was preferable. Not to caste dispersion's but sometimes when you go the seeded route there is no incentive to go from that to becoming a membership funded org. I think we have all seen plenty of examples of that in Uganda. But yes it does open us up to the claim that until we prove ourselves why join. * Thus far we have gotten the association registered * Formed an organizing committee * Reached out and met with NITA(U),MoICT * Reached out to various members of the ICT Community such as Hive Colab, Outbox etc * Helped organize this years UIGF * Attended the Orange Expo last year * Hired a administrator to help run the secretariat. Also I'd like to think we have some credibility maybe not with everyone, but with a growing member of the ICT Community in Uganda. That having been said we do have a lot more to do. Which is where I want to take the conversation next. What would you as Mark Tinka like to see the association do? What would be of value to you? How can we overcome some of the obstacles facing the ICT Sector in Uganda? How do we help make Uganda a ICT Hub of Excellence? How can we improve the level of ICT Education? Re: [LUG] ICTAU worth it?
Just to add my thoughts right or wrong I'm an accredited Fellow of the British Computer Society, which is a member institution of Engineering Council UK is therefore responsible for regulation of ICT and computer science fields within the UK, it's quite recognised and one can clearly see the benefits, in my case it adds status and credibility to who I am and what I do, even as a fellow it's only $145.00 a year to maintain my membership. Being that the ICTAU is so new and how people are judged to be competent or not seems very much at the whimsy of the board it's hard to see where this may be going, it's a good idea in principle but the costs seem OTT given the apparent lack of credibility , how and who decides where this money is going , how will it be used to better the ICT body, increases awareness and ultimately legitimize its status, what's in place to stop someone from just buying status. I have visited the ICTAU Site while looks OK albeit light on information, almost no information on the process behind the organization again in stark contrast to the BCS site, while I know that the ICTAU is new it should at least make public its members, process, meetings etc, or that what I would have thought. Have a look at the BCS http://www.bcs.org site everything is clear and concise This is not meant as a downer but if you expect people to pay money you have to justify it, as a test case believe I would fall under either - Individuals - Corporate @200,000/= which is what about $75.00 - Or PRIVATE COMPANIES/ CORPRATIONS Level 3 @1,000,000 which is about $380.00 membership I still want to know how and why you do things. as would most members would be my guess. I would have thought that starting this up a little lower key getting some traction then going for the bright lights later may have been a better move, now ICTAU is faced with somehow getting loads of money to maintain itself or face extinction, and that would not be good for the credibility of ICT field here, Uganda needs this in my view.
