lyx-1.5 beta 3 hanging file dialogs
Hello, I have some problems with my fresh installed lyx 1.5 beta 3. When I open a dialog (open file, save file, insert image, ...) which uses informations from filesystem (i.e. directory listing), die dialog hangs for a while. It seems there is an timeout. Is it possible, that the dialog is waitung to connect to network drives (shared folders), which are currently not available? How to prevent this behavior? Many thanks for helpfull hints - Tino
[SOLVED] Improper \prevdepth
After experiencing tons of weird LaTeX errors, and reading this: http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=erroradvice, I found that the use of scrheadings was responsible for the weird behaviour. I rewrote the preamble and fine-combed my ERT parts, and finally all traces of scrheadings were gone. So I can produce output again now. What happened is this: scrheadings seems to affect the calculation of typearea, and as a result, I had ! Latex error: Float(s) lost. I don't really understand that, but hey, the problem wasn't related to LyX and I solved it, so what the heck. Hope this is useful for anyone experiencing similar problems. -- Christian
A few problems with Lyx 1.5 beta3
I have installed lyx 1.5 beta 3 version (I used 1.4.4), and I have a few problems 1) Crashes are frequent, for reasons which remain obscure to me. 2) When I open some documents (created in version 1.4.4) the preview of mathematical formula only works for new formulae, for some others it works immediately for the whole document. Is there a way to force the preview? 3) The preview of mathematical formulae is too large, much larger than in 1.4.4, and much larger than in the final latex document. How can I reduce the preview size? Thank you JEan

Re: Physical units
You could probably create a macro for it, which would make the input much easier --- you would only need to use the ERT once, when creating the macro. (I haven't use the SIunits package, maybe it's simple enough to use that macros are not even necessary; but if you find yourself typing a lot of ERT over and over again, it may be helpful). To learn about how to create and use macros in math, see the User Guide, Section 5.6. I think there's been quite a bit of development regarding math macros going on lately, I'm not sure though how much of it is already in the beta versions. Good luck! Hi! However there are some problems that I need to fix (I use Book as document class, Lyx 1.4.3): I never used book class... 1. The bookmarks to some sections such as Acknowledgement, Glossary etc point to wrong pages. How? Like one or two section before that? Put in a page beak before these environments I created these with Chapter*. * means that it won't be in the TOC therefore they won't be indexed and no links generated. there's a manual for hyperref which tells you how to set additional anchors. 2. How can I added hyperref to bibliographic references? It would be nice if when I clicked on [1], the document would jump to Bibliography section and shown reference [1]. 3. The captions in the List of Tables and List of Figures and sections in TOC do not wrap when the reach the right side of the page. How can this be fixed? Can you supply a minimal example of your text? Sorry, I have hyperref working correctly but can't tell where your errors come from. But the manual is quite good, too.

Also, maybe it would help to add something at the top of Site.FAQ directing people here if they have questions not appearing on the FAQ? The pop up message was too quickly shown and closed so the error message could not even be seen. MikTeX 2.4 was installed before LyX 1.4.4. There is no such file C:\Documents and Settings\your name\Application Data\lyx1.4.x but two files: meanings.dat and words.dat in the folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Aiksaurus. The attempt for fixing the error using the procedure for LyX 1.4.1 was tried but still unsuccessful. Any idea on how to launch LyX in Windows XP? Any advice is greatly appreciated. The odds favor a failure of the configuration script, but without the specific error message it's a bit hard to guess what went splat. To see the error message, LWU can open a DOS window, change to the LyX bin directory, and run lyxc.exe there. If it's the dreaded no text classes message, then LWU should (a) verify that Python was installed, (b) verify that MikTeX is working and on the command path (running 'latex --version' from the command prompt should do the trick), and (c) change to the ...\Application Data directory and run 'path to python\python.exe path to LyX\Resources\configure.py'. I suspect this is what LWU meant by the procedure for LyX 1.4.1 but maybe not. If (a) and (b) check out and (c) fails, we need to see the output from (c). /Paul

Hi Well, this example file did not work for me with ps2pdf. So I decided to try pdflatex and that worked. Unfortunately pdflatex does not like my real document. When I try to view the real document I get a message There was an arror opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired when acrobat starts. Is that because I all my figures are *.eps? Is there a way of fixing this? I don't realy like pdflatex as it generates large pdf files (my file is already almost 6MB when generated with ps2pdf) but if that's the only way to get long captions to wrap, I guess I'll use it. BTW the long captions did behave properly before I started using the hyperref package. And to set the hyperlink anchors I'll use \phantomsection. I refer to the hyperref manual to find out how to set the hyperlink anchors in this case. 2. How can I added hyperref to bibliographic references? It would be nice if when I clicked on [1], the document would jump to Bibliography section and shown reference [1]. This is automatically done by hyperref. It works in the attached example. You have to load the cite package after hyperref, but check if you really need this package. 3. The captions in the List of Tables and List of Figures and sections in TOC do not wrap when the reach the right side of the page. How can this be fixed? Works in the attached file. In general: - You used a lot of strange code in your preamble and document. You should only use stuff that you really need. - You can save lots of preamble hooks if you use a better book class. I can recommend the class book (koma-script) that is used by the EmbeddedObjects manual. This class provides you nearly every feature needed for a proper book layout. Then you can get e.g. rid of your titlepage hack. Its beautiful documentation explains you more. regards Uwe
Re: A shell for launching figure editor under Mac OS
I put the script as code listing (see http://wiki.lyx.org/Mac/ Mac#toc6). It would be more convenient to give it as a file named og-export.scpt. Could anyone give me the upload password? Nobody could send this password to me? It may exist as it is mentionned in the Wiki! ;) I'd like to upload a new version of the script; the latter is now too long to be put as code listing... Many thanks for helpfull hints - Tino Is this on Windows? Windows is not the brightest of operating systems when it comes to networked drives. (Actually, I could have stopped that sentence after 'systems'.) I'm pretty sure the file dialogs use the OS API to do file system operations, so it's nothing LyX (nor Qt) can control. I've had Windows do some significant navel gazing at inconvenient times, which I've attributed to a surfeit of patience waiting for off-line drives to answer. There *might* be a way to set this in the registry, but I'm not at all sure. I think the default might be 10 seconds, and if it waits serially (rather than in parallel) for a bunch of disconnected drives, that could add up. The one sure solution is to disconnect/un-map unavailable drives. /Paul
Force document regeneration
Sometimes Lyx does not detect that I've changed a child document and when I select View-update-pdf(pdflatex), it does not regenerate the pdf. The only work around I've found is make changes that have no effect like adding blank lines to ERT in the top level document. Is there a better way? Thanks Phil

I cannot help you here as I don't have the file. I assume the reason is one of your strange preamble hacks. To find the reason, copy the file and remove everything except of one text line. If you then still have problems, remove the preamble stuff step by step until you found the problematic code. Is that because I all my figures are *.eps? Is there a way of fixing this? No, LyX takes care of it. I don't realy like pdflatex as it generates large pdf files (my file is already almost 6MB when generated with ps2pdf) but if that's the only way to get long captions to wrap, I guess I'll use it. pdflatex is much faster and the resulting PDFs are not larger for me. You caption problem must have another reason. BTW the long captions did behave properly before I started using the hyperref package. Try to load the caption package behind hyperref in the preamble. regarsd Uwe

Good luck! Re: beta 3 and lyx2lyx
With this command I can run lyx2lyx but I get several errors and I can´t get a file correctly exported. I get this message: UnicodeEncodeError: latin-1 codec can´t encode character u\u0301 in position 0: ordinal not in range(256) I also see this with a few other files and I will work on it. I guess I will ask you to test your document again with RC2 if I can not make it before RC1. Thanks. Bo

What is RC2, RC1? Lyx 1.5.0 is now at beta3 testing stage. The next testing release will be called release candidate 1 (RC1), which is planned to be released soon (this weekend?). There will likely to be a RC2 release before 1.5.0 is officially released. Cheers, Bo

Re: Question from the wiki
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi, Someone going under 'LyXWinUser' placed the following on a wiki page called Site.FAQ. That page is intendend for question regarding the use of the wiki, and not issues related to using LyX. So I'm posting the question here, hoping that 'LyXWinUser' will get an answer. An interesting question is whether LyXWinUser knows about this group, given that he/she posted the question to the wiki. I just took a peek at Site.FAQ and didn't see the question, so I assume you sanitized the page? Perhaps it would make sense to post temporarily a response directing LWU here (and then remove it after some reasonable period, or after LWU posts something here)? Also, maybe it would help to add something at the top of Site.FAQ directing people here if they have questions not appearing on the FAQ? With an answer, the question better belongs in e.g. Windows.FAQ. Not sure if that's a good idea -- fixes for Windows frequently involve mystic runes and the sacrifice of small furry animals, and posting that on the wiki is liable to bring both fundamentalists and PETA down on your neck. ;-) PPS: Here's the text: Q:##Q: How to install LyX 1.4.4 successfully for Windows XP? LyX 1.4.4 was installed for Windows XP (SP2) with LyXWinInstaller (small) but it could not be launched after installation. /Paul

You have to load the cite package after hyperref, but check if you really need this package. 3. Re: Questions regarding hyperref
Thank you Leo LB schrieb: I have added the following code (I took it from EmbeddedObjects.lyx) to the preamble of my document However there are some problems that I need to fix (I use Book as document class, Lyx 1.4.3): 1.
Thanks Phil

If you then still have problems, remove the preamble stuff step by step until you found the problematic code. Is that because I all my figures are *.eps? Is there a way of fixing this? There are two math toolbars now. The ordinary one and the former math panel. You can open it via View-Toolbars-Math Panel. Jürgen In that case I think that the User's Guide needs updating as it still states in Section 5.1.6 The Math Panel dialog (accesable via InsertMath.
What happened is this: scrheadings seems to affect the calculation of typearea, and as a result, I had "! Latex error: Float(s) lost".
