Re: Just an idea - synced navigation in LyX and preview?
2011/11/23 Rainer M Krug r.m.k...@gmail.com: Hi I have quite often the preview as well as lyx open, and the outline window detached. And I thought: wouldn't it be nice, if the preview (in my case pdf, okular) would navigate synchronous with the navigation based on the outline window? i.e. a forward lookup (which I did not get to work with okular... but that is a different story) whenever I click on a section or graph in the outline? Probably even better, to have a toggle button in the outline, which specify the navigation target (LyX, preview or both)? This would save precious desktop space, as the viewer would simply have to display the page. Any comments? It is always worth to dream, however I do not see technical solution how to tie what is displayed in PDF reader application with what is displayed in LyX application. LyX does not have idea on which page the text where you cursor is currently present will be present. What is worse, I cannot imagine that any PDF viewing application can report back what part of the document is actually displayed. I am not saying that this is technically impossible, but requires some standardization between both, which would be hard to achieve. Howver, If any one can do all that, I am signing below that idea with two hands! I can imagine even automatic update of the PDF in the background. -- Manveru jabber: manv...@manveru.pl gg: 1624001 http://www.manveru.pl

Re: Engineering student considering LyX for Thesis
2011/10/17 Johnston81 johnsto...@gmail.com: To the ones that can and will help, I apologize if this has already been covered in another topic; I have searched but been unable to find any such. If, however, you know of such topics, if you could please point me in the right direction? My current situation is this: I am working on my Master Thesis and currently doing my research and such. As it is now, I am uncertain how large my final project will be - I imagine that the final document will probably exceed 100 pages, but where I am uncertain of size I am certain that the document will contain considerable amounts of graphs and tables - rather more than I am comfortable working with in Word 2010. My questions are fairly simple to ask, I am not certain that everybody will agree on the answers but rough estimates are all I am looking for anyway. So here goes: 1. Considering LyX over Word, how much time would I approximately need to learn LyX to the extent that I can actually produce text, including graphics and formulas(!), from a template? 2. What can I reasonably expect my learning curve to be after having learned the bare basics; what I mean is, is it simple to teach LyX to oneself and how easy is it to solve problems when encountered? 3. And finally, being a skilled user of Word would I - ultimately - save or spend time if I did try my luck on LyX? I have many more similar questions, but for now this will have to do - I shouldn't take to much of your time! But if you have any other advice or experiences that relate to my post, that you feel could help me or others that are doing the same kind of contemplations, please do not hesitate and do share! I started learning LyX just before I started writing my masters thesis. Most what I've learnt I learnt during writing it. One of the best advantages was ability to work on text both on Windows and Linux without any problems (in terms of text - images were converted differently so results of PDF output were different; however I choose one platform to produce final publication and tweak all images for it). One of LaTeX disadvantages under modern Linux is that on Windows (thanks to MikTeX) you almost always has access to most recent releases of TeX packages. While Linux distributions are tied to particular versions of TeXLive which is most of the time the very old version (case of Ubuntu Natty is one of examples). So it requires more manual intervention to build new TeXLive for own use. Time spent to learn LyX LaTeX better was similar to time spent on fixing Word bad behaviour - I can compare as I wrote my bachelors thesis in Word. The results coming from LyX/LaTeX tandem are far better and predictable. And no graphics disappears in puff of smoke :-) Another advantage of LyX are TOC, Indexes and references in the documents - it is far much easier to manage them in LyX than in Word, even if you have manually add a label to almost every chapter or section. Finally in my opinion the LyX itself is far much technologically advanced than the LaTeX itself. Most of the problems with proper interaction between elements in the output comes from problems with LaTeX. The ideas behind it are very old these days and that status quo changes too slow. -- Manveru jabber: manv...@manveru.pl gg: 1624001 http://www.manveru.pl

How to see console output of LyX 2.0.0 in Windows?
I need to configure batik as SVG converter for LyX 2.0.0 as I have in 1.6.x - I know how, but I have some issue in the method. Re: Branch problem with chapters
2011/9/19 Julien Rioux jri...@physics.utoronto.ca: [...] Glad you got it fixed. Does it work also if you position the cursor ahead of the branch and select the Standard environment from the dropdown? I would think it should work. I tried that, but this method failed. Nothing happens (I used Alt+P, S). Such additional experiments expected from the user to clean thing up does not seem to be a wanted feature of the application. I guess the cursor was in Chapter environment when you did Insert Branch. Then the branch resides inside a Chapter environment. There is a reasonable chance that this is actually what you want. So, should LyX do better by guessing that you want to do with the branch based on the current selection? Something like, if the selection involves the whole of an environment, or more than one environment, put the branch in a Standard environment. If I select whole chapter in outline and then want to move it into branch, what I want? For sure not leaving empty chapter. Maybe I am wrong, but I think whole chapter should go there and branch should left in standard environment. Branch problem with chapters
Hi, If I select whole chapter from outline pane and select to insert a branch, which is disabled, then empty chapters are left which goes into output. How to clean them up? I need whole chapters but I do not need artefacts leaved when branches are disabled. Is it a bug in 2.0.1? Document class chosen is mwbook. Additionally, branches cannot be named with spaces inside - something wrong happens with them if they contain spaces. However they are allowed to be entered on creation. -- Manveru jabber: manv...@manveru.pl gg: 1624001 http://www.manveru.pl

Doxygen generated pages included in LyX document
Hi LyXers, Has anyone ever successfully embed parts of Doxygen generated documentation into LyX documents (Appendix in my case)? I would like to have couple pages of the documentation be presented as appendixes in my thesis, however single latex file included in LyX want work due to Lonely \item errors, and I cannot include all refman.tex as it is full documents with all headers. Manual striping of them is not a case - it is far better not include anything. This is because at any time Doxygen would rerun to generate new version of reference documentation. It would be probably nice to have such feature in Doxygen itself to generate stripped .tex for including in other document. However such requirement has to be somehow defined - what should be present in that file, and what not. Maybe some LyX modules could be used to feed package dependencies. Any advices? Any solutions? -- Manveru jabber: manv...@manveru.pl gg: 1624001 http://www.manveru.pl

So far I relied on getdeb to get lyx updated, but it looks like getdeb has somewhat dropped supporting lyx on lucid. Of course Ubuntu has recent lyx packages but lucid doesn't meet their dependencies. OTTH, I'm not so fond at compiling myself, and I see that even on the lucid-bleed ppa, lyx 2.0.0 failed to build... not very encouraging. I'm in no hurry to upgrade my Ubuntu. Has anyone successfully compiled lyx 2 under lucid 64? TIA for any advice or experience report. I have same problem as you as I do not found good binary source of LyX for Lucid. I've built my version from SVN, but I do not plan to release it as .deb. This is x86_64 version. But my distro sucks a lot from many PPA, so my libs or tools may not be from official lucid. I should push LyX over backporting process to check doing .deb. -- Manveru jabber: manv...@manveru.pl gg: 1624001 http://www.manveru.pl

Hello, (Please read about validity of this message below) I have a strange ask to anyone able and willing to help. Due to stupid security restriction caused by bugs in filtering software I still cannot download LyX-2.0.0-3-Installer.exe as the file is blocked as malicious. So, I want to ask someone to send me that file by e-mail privately compressed in ZIP with password newlyx (alternatively provide a link to download such version). However to avoid lot of files sent by multiple users, please sent an reply to this message to the list, to inform others that you decided to sent me that file and prevent others to do the same. DO NOT SEND FILE TO THE LIST, it will not arrive as mailing list software will remove the attachment then. Thank you. Additionally this request is valid for two hours from the time it was sent, so please check date and time, and if two hours passed please ignore this message even if there is no reply on the list. Thank you again. -- Manveru jabber: manv...@manveru.pl gg: 1624001 http://www.manveru.pl

This is probably due to fact that in 2.0 the background handling of conversion process required rewrite of external command execution. So instead of calling system() call which launched programs through user's shell, now exec() call (or one of its variants) is used instead and that call is unable to run batch as batch is a Windows shell script closely tied to cmd.exe. But in this server environment of the company i have to enter a proxy with the domain prefix, e.g. domain\proxy. But i cannot enter a backslash, so i does not work. Is there any other way to define the proxy (e.g in a config file)? Or do you have any other concrete idea to solve the problem? 2011/1/27 J. Gardner disinteres...@gmail.com: Earlier I posted about slow startup (up to five minutes) with LyX 2.0 beta 3 on Windows 7 Pro 32 bit. After some experimentation, I discovered that the problem was that there was a corrupted DVD in the drive. This caused very LyX to start very slowly and freeze for several minutes every time a change was made to the preferences (presumably because of an interaction with Windows explorer). Interestingly, it didn't cause problems with other applications. Removing the DVD solved the problem, but I thought it might be useful to note what the solution was -- maybe it suggests a change that can be made to prevent similar problems. I suspect this problem to be deeper than LyX code itself. Probably something in Qt library requests WinAPI specific calls to identify drives available in the system. It is a Windows fault it hangs for long time trying to identify broken DVD in the drive. Similar scenario is happening in Total Commander if you select the drive with faulty disc. -- Manveru jabber: manv...@manveru.pl gg: 1624001 http://www.manveru.pl

2011/1/18 Christian Wilhelmsen christian.wilhelmse...@gmail.com: I juse LyX and Dropbox in collaboration with my team mates, and the problem is that when you have opened a file, another user edits it and sync it through dropbox, LyX wont open the new version, it opens a buffered copy or something. We have to close LyX each time we want to open an updated document, or else you just get the copy that is stored in memory... Tried removing auto-backup, if that was the problem, but no. Anyone knows how we can get past this problem? I think your problem lies in Dropbox itself and the file locking mechanics (I understand you are working on Windows). Dropbox cannot update (write to) file currently open by any application for reading, Windows permission system does not allow that. I do not know whether LyX keep file opened or locked anyhow (should for NFS purpose), however while Dropbox 1.0 is able to read and sync files to the server (it do that with my opened Excel sheets) it is not able to write anything while file is opened. When you close the LyX all locks are removed, Dropbox quickly updates your file from the server, then when you reopen LyX you see new version. I think LyX should operate at Dropbox API level to handle properly that case you expect. I think it won't happen fast if at all. Forst it need good merge feature - I do not know if is finished or not. -- Manveru jabber: manv...@manveru.pl gg: 1624001 http://www.manveru.pl

Re: Is there a way keep hyperlinks in pasted text?
2011/1/12 Joel Schwartz j...@joelschwartz.com: Let's say I copy a block of text on a web page. Some of the words in this block of text include hyperlinks to other URLs (web pages, pdf files, etc.). When I copy and paste this text block into lyx, the hyperlinks are gone and just the text gets pasted. Is there a way to paste the text into lyx so that the hyperlinks are also included, or do I need to recreate the hyperlinks manually? The users' guide doesn't mention a way to keep the hyperlinks, so I'm guessing the answer is no, but I thought I'd check here just to make sure. I think you say about pasting HTML text, so I think is not implemented in LyX. I think this could be considered as feature request. -- Manveru jabber: manv...@manveru.pl gg: 1624001 http://www.manveru.pl

Re: MikTeX 2.9 w/ LyX 1.6.8

You can set the MiKTeX path in: Tools Preferences Paths PATH prefix Re-running the installer will also allow you to change the MiKTeX location. Joost Hi Joost, Yes, adding the line C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.9\miktex\bin; to the path did indeed make a difference. Just so I better understand how LyX/MikTeX work, why was LyX using 2.7 even though I have 2.9 referenced on the Windows path? Why do I need to add it to the LyX path? LyX must be remembering the old path locations so where is this setting being stored and why can't I just update that settings file? Thanks, Ken Not exactly. Some parts of LyX configuration is being build upon installation and initial configuration procedure. Then these informations are used on every LyX reconfiguration. There is no feature to automatically look for new version of MikTeX and that is good for couple of reasons. Mainly you can safely have two or more MikTeX versions installed and switch them to test how LyX plays with them. The only thing you need to remember is to put correct path to the MikTeX version you for in LyX preferences window when you want cooperate with new version. I am fine with that. -- Manveru jabber: manv...@manveru.pl gg: 1624001 http://www.manveru.pl
