No, not output-wise. These are different input formats provided with
different font encodings. If you write LaTeX in an editor, ,this` is
the fastest input method, but it matches \quotesinglebase
this\textquoteleft.

Not, though, that changing quote styles (e.g. to German guillemets) is
easier if you use Alt+".


A somewhat related question is the difference between typing "let's"
in LyX and pasting "let’s". The output is identical here as well with
the curly apostrophe. Is there case where the different inputs
matter?

Thanks for elaborating. But I noted that changing quote styles does not
automatically change all existing quotation marks in the text,
regardless of their input format. Is that right?
I'm glad I don't have to bother with the different input forms in my
text as I happen to have also used the shortcut occasionally.

Difference is while exporting with Pandoc to, let's say, docx – opening quote 
can be missing (glqq, glq, quotesinglbase and quotedblbase in my case), so I 
must define them in the preamble and uncomment them only when exporting by 
Pandoc.

Sorry for not beeing clear: I see the advantages of the quote inset and do
not want to replace them.

Instead my suggestion is to let the quote inset write literal characters
instead of macros or ligatures whenever possible.

We've had this discussion more than once. Please consult the (lyx-
devel) archives why literal quote chars are inferior to quote insets,
particularly if we try to extend support eventually (think csquotes,
quote balancing check, etc.).

converting them with "unicodesymbols" if literals are not supported?

   As the new default "input encoding" is utf8, this reason no longer holds.

Only with polyglossia/xetex/luatex (one or more of these), I think.

This is because in older versions of the inputenc package, the literal
characters were not supported.

You may try to copy the file "unicodesymbols" from the LyX library directory
(here /usr/local/src/lyx/lib/) to your personal lyx directory (here ~/.lyx/)
and comment out the lines

#0x201c "\\textquotedblleft"   "" "" # LEFT DOUBLE QUOTATION MARK
#0x201d "\\textquotedblright"  "" "" # RIGHT DOUBLE QUOTATION MARK

and try again.

Yes, using xetex changes the code preview to usage of unicode. Is it 
on purpse one cannot useb pdflatex that way?


It is a matter of using polyglossia instead of babel, from what I 
understand. There some things (ligatures, spacing) that are handled with 
these improves engines, but not the plain pdflatex with babel.


I see. Well, pdflatex seems to understand the quotation marks as well 
plus it solves the problem with the PDF bookmarks. And I guess there are

I see. Couldn't LyX remember whether the switch has been made and delete 
those aux files. I guess the error is not a big problem but I was 
already thinking that it did not work correctly.


2. With xetexThe plain quotation marks show as Mapping=34 in the 
bookmarks.


What bookmarks are you talking about?


The PDF bookmarks ("table of content").

Yes, using xetex changes the code preview to usage of unicode. Is it on 
purpse one cannot useb pdflatex that way?


It is a matter of using polyglossia instead of babel, from what I 
understand. There some things (ligatures, spacing) that are handled with 
these improves engines, but not the plain pdflatex with babel.

Or if you change the language and set the quotation marks to language default

In that case you have to use PDF (luatex) as output.

By the way, I noticed two strange things:

1. If I typeset the document I sent before first with pdflatex and then 
with xetex I get an error:

The control sequence at the end of the top line
of your error message was never \def'ed. If you have
misspelled it (e.g., `\hobx'), type `I' and the correct
spelling (e.g., `I\hbox'). Otherwise just continue,
and I'll forget about whatever was undefined.

If I typeset a second time with xetex or straight from the beginning, it 
works as expected.


2. With xetexThe plain quotation marks show as Mapping=34 in the bookmarks.

bookmarks.

problems with french quotation marks when using lyx with sweave

Hi

I would like to use french quotatin marks in a lyx document with R/Sweave 
code chunks. Unfortunately, the french quotation marks get replaced by 
filled squares during compilation even if I use \frqq. Does anybody know why 
this is?
I'm using the Sweave/Lyx setup described by Gregor Gorjanc, which works fine 
for me on both Mac and Windows computers except for the problem with 
quotation marks.

by Sweave.sty. Can you try to replace

somewhere in your setup?

Alternatively, it might help to select a font-package (like mathpazo)
in the LaTex Preamble (as this overrides the ae font selection).

have you tried creating a couple of shortcuts to the unicode-insert command? 
It works for me.
The left pointing guillemet is 00AB and the right pointing one is 00BB (those 
are unicode codes).
Go to ToolsPreferencesShortcuts
Click on New
- in the function field type: unicode-insert 00AB (resp., 00BB) (those are 
leading zeros, BTW, not uppercase oh)
- Then click on the raised Shortcut button, and press the key combination 
you'd like to associate to the guillemets. I use Alt-Shift- and Alt-Shift-.

Click Ok and you're done.

However, I am on Linux with personalized keyboard settings. On Windows XP you 
may have a way to enter them directly without using a LyX shortcut. Wikipedia 
says: 
Windows users can create the guillemet by typing « by holding Alt + 0171 
and » by holding Alt + 0187.
Not sure it works on the Italian Keyboard, though.

On my Linux machine, I set the compose key to the left windows key  
(super_l); super_l +  +  == »; super_l +  +  == «.


So at least for me, there's no extra work to be done to compose extended  
characters.  Not all of them work that way, but it's fairly easy on Linux  
to install different keyboard maps, too.  I occasionally write with  
polytonic Greek, and having the keyboard map for it with XeTeX makes life  
a lot easier.  (I bind different keymaps to r_shift + l_shift.)


The last key to the puzzle for me has been to use the SCIM input methods  
for the rare cases I do any work with CJK fonts.


My solution really only works because I've got XeTeX playing nicely on my  
system (Ubuntu 9.04).  Without knowing the OP's operating system, I'm not  
sure how much help my response gives, but by and large it solves most of  
my problems with extended characters.

Glad it did. 
By the way, be sure it works on the pdf output, not just in LyX. Some fonts 
may not have the approriate glyphs for the guillemets, in which case all you 
get on paper are black boxes. For instance, the AE font (almost European) does 
not seem to work on my system, while my favorite font, MinionPro, gives me no 
troubles.

mark 
(« »).

As I need both single and double quotation marks, I don't want to change 
Document  settings  Language  quotestyle which now is set as  this (and 
allows me to use 'this' pressing the Alt key).
But as I use an italian keyboard, I would like to have a direct key binding 
also 
to the « and » characters. The best would be to bind some combination, e. 
g. 

Alt +  = «

and

Alt +  = » (or Alt + Shift +  = »)



Another (smarter?) way would be a shortkey to change the auto quote style 
setting to «quote style» (and back)

but I have no clue on how to use the kmap file or similar. Any (starting) help?

On Ubuntu 9.04 and Gnome, I use the following key sequence: 
Multi_key less less : «   guillemotleft
Multi_key greater greater : »   guillemotright

(from /usr/share/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose, I think is the one used
for it_IT.UTF-8, the same as used for es_ES.UTF-8)

These key combination works in LyX and many other applications.
You must press Right Win (or your ComposeKey) and release it, then twice  (or 
)

In my system Multi_key is associated to Right Win, this can be set in 
System  Preferences  Keyboard  Dists.  Options button

On Ubuntu 9.04 and Gnome, I use the following key sequence: 
Multi_key less less : «   guillemotleft
Multi_key greater greater : »   guillemotright

(from /usr/share/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose, I think is the one used
for it_IT.UTF-8, the same as used for es_ES.UTF-8)

These key combination works in LyX and many other applications.
You must press Right Win (or your ComposeKey) and release it, then twice  (or 
)

In my system Multi_key is associated to Right Win, this can be set in 
System  Preferences  Keyboard  Dists.  Options button

Hello,

I wonder if there's a simple manner to solve this.

I need 3 kinds of quotation marks:

single quotation mark ('), double quotation mark ("), and caporal quotation 
mark 
(« »).

As I need both single and double quotation marks, I don't want to change 
Document > settings > Language > quotestyle which now is set as  "this" (and 
allows me to use 'this' pressing the Alt key).
But as I use an italian keyboard, I would like to have a direct key binding 
also 
to the "«" and "»" characters. The best would be to bind some combination, e. 
g. 

Alt + < = "«"

and

Alt + > = "»" (or Alt + Shift + < = "»")



Another (smarter?) way would be a shortkey to change the auto "quote style" 
setting to «quote style» (and back)

but I have no clue on how to use the kmap file or similar. Any (starting) help?

If your problem is the one familiar to me, then it isn't really a LyX problem, 
but a sort of geometric one. On the principle that most initial quotes are 
preceded by a space, but few final ones are, a partial solution is to find and 
replace, searching for SPACE + straight quote and replacing with SPACE 
plus the left, or initial, quotes you want.  The remaining straight quotes will
be final or right quotes, and you can search and replace them with proper 
right hand quotes without worrying about spaces. 
Obviously some things will fall between the cracks.  
But perhaps your difficulty is more technical than I am thinking.

quotation marks with single quotation marks, so she doesn't have to  
mark them all. Normal find/replace in LyX doesn't seem to work. Is  
there a way to do this?

Well, you get what you chose.
I guess you want plain quotation marks, that are rather inch signs.
You'll get those by hitting Ctrl-S-. Note, however, that this is not 
typographically correct.
