OS 10.10, does it still support the Reinstall option from the Recovery Partition?

2014-10-23 Thread Dane Trethowan
Question says it all.

I’m wondering this as I wish to do a reinstall of the OS on my Macbook Pro but
can’t bring up the recovery boot process, I shut the computer down and then
restart whilst holding down the option key, I hold this down for 15 seconds or
so.

Then I use the left arrow key to hopefully select the recovery utility or
whatever its called and then press enter but unfortunately the Macbook boots up
as it normally should.

Yes, I’ve tried hitting the right arrow after releasing the option key at
start-up smile.

I take it the option key is the key next to command?

I have never used that technique.

I simply hold command R as the Mac Reboots which I find a lot easier.

News Wallpapers

2014-10-23 Thread Glenn
Hi,
I have an Android that I am learning with, and I noticed that there are
wallpapers that display breaking news, in the categories you have chosen.
I was wondering if IOS devices do this.
I looked on my iPhone in settings, but all the wallpapers are like bubbles
and such.
If such wallpapers don't come with IOS, is there a place to get them, and
also, does VO speak them?
Thanks.

Re: OS 10.10, does it still support the Reinstall option from the Recovery Partition?

2014-10-23 Thread Phil Halton
Andy, I just did the following before answering your question:
1) restart the mac.
2) at the log on chime sound, immediately press and hold command + R.
3) hold for a full fifteen seconds then release.
4) wait another 10 seconds and then turn on VoiceOver with command +F5.

Note: these times vary. I’d stick with the initial fifteen seconds although it
might be overkill. if the ten seconds still doesn’t bring up Fred, keep trying
- it’ll come up talking in a bit. Fred comes up as the default recovery mode
voice.
end note:

6) you are presented with the recovery mode menu that has a table containing
three options, reinstall OSX, get help, and Disk Utility.
BTW: this is the preferred disk utility app for doing permissions repairs.

After you finish with the recovery mode, simply quit with command Q and you’ll
be prompted to reboot with options for which disk to boot into - default is
your Mac HD.

To reinstall the OS, simply select the option from the table and hit enter,
then follow the yellow brick road.

Re: New iTunes.

2014-10-23 Thread David Griffith
I think it is easier often to use the shortcut keys than the sidebar anyway.
On my machine.

command 1 Music
Command 2 films
Command 3 TV Programs
Command 4 Podcast
Command 5 iTunes U.
Command 6 Audio books
Command 7 Apps
Command 8. tones
Command 9 Internet Radio
Command 0 iTunes Store.

If you want to replicate the sidebar experience use command option F to jump
to the search field and then navigate

 right.

Logging In on Mac Book Pro Since Updating

2014-10-23 Thread Eleanor Martha Burke
Hi All, hope someone can help. On my Mac Book Air I have no problem with
loggin in when I turn on Mac. I have VO start speaking automatically and
off I go putting in my details. Now on the Mac Book Pro things seem to be
different and I do not know where to change the setting. If I close down
when I start the Mac again there is no speech. I press command plus F5 and
I have a very very slow voice. This guides me of a fashion and I get logged
in. However, if I choose to shut down by going to Apple Menu and log out
eleanor burke, then the Mac Book Pro starts up immediately with the type of
login as I have on the Mac Book Air. Now why are both different? On the
Air I just shut down and vo comes up talking when I turn the power button
on. On the Pro the only way I have vo coming up talking is by log out
eleanor burke but then the machine does not turn off but boots up again and
vo is there. I want the Pro to simply shut down when I close and when I
power on again I want vo coming up talking. I know I have been repetative
here but I am trying to explain the situation.

Re: V M Ware fusion 7 or Parallels

2014-10-23 Thread Phil Halton
for some reason you wound up in my junk mailbox, but no matter… Fusion 7 is the
only real way to go. Parallels is not accessible to any extent that would make
it worth the bother, whereas fusion is completely accessible to VoiceOver.
Version 7 is compatible with the latest OSX, and its always a good idea to keep
up with the latest versions of apps if possible.
you’ll encounter a little difficulty when setting up your windows screen
reader, there is no insert key on the mac, and you can’t use the caps lock key
either as OSX doesn’t treat it as an actual key press that can be passed
through to the windows virtual machine, both of these keys being the
preferred modifier keys for windows screen readers. So, you’ll have to do a
few little tricks to get around that - no problem though - it is easily done
and we’ll help you when you get to that.

I kind of like the way it works and i do use the playlists button all the
time. I'd say to be harsh, get used to it and learn the way it is as it can
hopefully get better. My 86 thousand song library loads a lot faster then it
did under the new iTunes. I will hopefully this weekend be releasing a podcast
on what I know of the new iTunes. and how to use it.

Is this permanent? Can it be undone? Does anyone have any explanation on

Re: OS 10.10, does it still support the Reinstall option from the Recovery Partition?

2014-10-23 Thread Andy Collins
Hi Phil -

Thanks for this. Couple of things if that’s ok, or if anybody else wants to
chime in and help:

Is it worth going for a clean installation, or will the upgrade to Yosemite
effectively be like a new install, giving things a tweak if needed?

I was also interested in what you said about repairing permissions, is it
better then to do this from within the command r screen rather than from disc
utility?

Thanks -

Note: these times vary. I’d stick with the initial fifteen seconds although

I personally do it from the cmd r screen that way no files are going to be
locked and in use.

also the upgrade just replaces the core files which sometimes but not all the
time can lead to a disastr. I do the upgrade then a time machien back up and
after a few weeks do a clean install.

2014-10-23 Thread Sarah k Alawami
No I really did mean cmd r. and you can clean install 10.10 through there.
Just be sure you format the correct drive. or you will be in big trouble. I
know this from experience 3 years ago.

I'm working on a how to thing on yosemite that will be released when it's
done. so watch this space for more info. some of you already have some of the
files but are not aloud to share them.

Take care.

2014-10-23 Thread David Griffith

No it is command R.
To do a clean install you need to erase your hard disc from within the
Disk Utility also in the recovery console.

Remember the famous tricky part when you come to sign into the App Store
though to be honest I have done this a few times now and it no longer
seems tricky.

1. You initially appear not to be able to access the login page.
2. Press VO F2 twice to bring up the window chooser. You may have to add
the FN key to VO depending on your settings.

3. Make sure you are in the sign in to app store window.
5. Press VO Command F5 to make sure your mouse is focussed on the sign
in window.

6.Press Shift VO space bar to simulate a mouse click
7. You should now be able to sign in mormally to the
App Store and download your OS.

Re: How to tell if I am on the release level of Yosemite

2014-10-23 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello Brian and Sarah,
Many thanks for the information on how to find my Yosemite build number. I am
at 14A388B rather than 14A389 so not quite at the release level.
So how can I do a clean install of the release level? Last time I tried to
install from the App store I got Yosemite Beta 1 which is not what I wanted! I
see that my system preferences for App Store say that I am set up for beta
software. I wonder if I should turn that off and then try the install from the
App store again.
Or maybe 14A388B is sufficiently close to the release level that its not worth
the re-install.
Many thanks

get the cursor to go to the top of the document. Has anyone else noticed this?

On-screen Braille when no Braille display is connected

2014-10-23 Thread Andy Collins
Hi all -

Although there is no Braille display connected to my Mac, Braille is still
being displayed on-screen. I have been using a display, but now even after
several reboots, I can’t get rid of this issue. I don’t know it’s there, VO
isn’t reporting anything, but to those with eyes, Braille symbols are displayed
somewhere on the screen all of the time.

Anybody know what is going on here and how to resolve it. It is having an
effect on the Mac’s performance, as it freezes at times, and gets stuck in busy
mode. I’d really like to do a clean install with Yosemite, but am nervous about
that, having never done it before, and not knowing the complete steps -

The Apple genius I spoke to said that this is indeed the case. It is turned off
when the system is fully installed but it does something. It locks your drive
technically so if you are ever going to partition don’t! I know from experience
that things go very wrong.
I have even tried unlocking my drive from the recovery partition but it's still
no go. As I said, Drive still works fine but I want it unlocked as I did not
ask it to be locked in the first place.

Yes, there was a dialog during setup which asked whether you wanted to turn on
Firevolt. At least that was my experience.

FireVolt is great. Without it, it’s surprising how easy it is to get access to
someone’s data on their Mac even if they have a password. It’s particularly
useful on a MacBook if you don’t want people having access to everything on
your Mac if you lose it or it’s stolen. And once you know what the beeps mean
at login, the process is perfectly accessible. It’s important to learn what the
beeps mean though, as I stuffed it up the first time and had to decrypt and
encrypt again. One beep is to type in the user name, two beeps is to type in
your password, and three beeps means you are logging in. If you type the
username or password incorrectly, it just repeats the relevant beep signal.

I unlocked the file vault. It didn’t take very much time and Idon’t have a lot
of data on my MacAir as of yet. Not until I get comfortable with this tool.

Question? How do I know the file lock is off for all files on the computer?

As the Mac Access Dot Net administrators, we always strive to ensure that the
Mac-Access E-Mal list remains malware, spyware, Trojan, virus and worm-free.
However, this should in no way replace your own security strategy. We assume
neither liability nor responsibility should something unpredictable happen.

Can't copy

2014-10-23 Thread Juanita Martin
Since Yosemite, I can’t copy email that I want to look at later. I have a keep
folder for this. Now when I do a command c, the Mac just dings. Is there a
new copy command or something?
