Hi. I have thought of starting to use ogg, but I have not done it yet. I have been looking at some tests at google, and the opinions about which format is the best is defferent. Re: My Mac Mini
Bryan, I'm not looking to turn this into a pissing contest because in general I find your posts and such of value and informative. You however are really down on the Mini and for no good reason. Your a power user, so the Mini simply is not for you, but in no way does that mean the Mini is useless. Sure it is an inexpensive way to get into Mac and sure if you want the extras like the Apple keyboard and mouse, you have to purchase those separately, but you aren't required to purchase these items either. I say again and will continue to say that for what most folks are interested in, the Mini is a viable machine. If all you do is surf the web, read e-mail, rip/listen to audio, and even some light-duty photo editing, the Mini is more than capable of all this. The Mini can even handle running Fusion and of course the more VMs you want to run, the more horsepower, drive space, and ram you will require. I really think you are not being objective and are very bias against the Mini for whatever reason. I think you see it as an underpowered toy, which is simply not the case. I have an older G4 Mini sitting here that I have converted to a LInux box and despite the fact it's only a 1.4Ghz processor, 512Mb ram, and 80Gb storage, it works great. I said before it has more to do with needs and I think that is a valid argument. The whole point here Bryan is to make potential switchers understand that the Mini is a viable option for someone who is not a power user such as yourself. Otherwise, some may believe that the Mini is so inadequate, that they would not consider purchasing a Mac because the Macbook or iMac is beyond their Financial reach. Does this make sense? On Apr 3, 2010, at 1:23 AM, Bryan Smart wrote: The only things that the Mini has going for it are that it is the least expensive Mac, and that it is the smallest Mac. Being inexpensive doesn't mean that it is a good bargain, though, only that it is the least expensive way to get some kind of Mac. Being small is important for some special situations, like if you want it to be a component in a living room entertainment center, or if you plan to stash it away on a shelf in a closet. Neither of these things make it a good desktop Mac, or even a good deal. If you have no idea if you'll even like a Mac, it is the cheapest commitment to try it out. If you're sure that you want to use a Mac, though, it doesn't make financial sense. The entry level iMac, the 21.5 inch model with the 3Ghz Core Duo CPU, 4GB of memory, 500GB hard drive, and accessories, costs right at $1200. This iMac comes with the full Apple desktop experience. You have a real Apple keyboard and a Mighty Mouse. You don't need to worry about a monitor, because it's built in. Its still a very small computer. The difference is that your Mini lays down on your desk, and the iMac stands up. In some ways, this actually saves you desk space over the Mini. What do you need to get a Mini like that? The Mini doesn't even have a 3Ghz CPU. The 2.66Ghz is the best you can get, and that Mini starts at $949. Pay another $100 to get a 500GB hard drive, like on the iMac. Of course, you'll need a keyboard and mouse like are included with the iMac, and so add an Apple keyboard and magic mouse. Your Mini has no monitor, though, and you'll have to buy one, so you'll need a video adaptor. Final check out is $1,196.00, the exact same thing that you would have paid for the iMac. Not only that, but unlike the iMac, you still don't have a monitor. You can go buy a 20 inch one new for $70 at an office supply store, but it will be a low quality LCD, not the nice wide screen LED display in the iMac. Everything together will cost you almost $1,300. So, when you're finished, you've spent more than you would on an iMac, you have a slower CPU, a slower hard drive, and a lower quality monitor. Not only that, but you have a separate monitor/CPU, instead of a combined unit. That means that your Mini with monitor and keyboard is far less portable than the iMac would have been. Also, for almost the same amount of money, you could have purchased a MacBook with 4GB memory and a 500GB hard drive for $1,249. That would have matched the Mini's performance, since the Mini uses laptop guts anyway, except the MacBook would be extremely portable. Even if you got the cheapest Mini, but still got a $70 cheap-o monitor and accessories, you'll spend over $800. Yes, you saved $400 over getting an iMac. But you have a 2.26Ghz CPU instead of 3Ghz, you have 2GB of memory instead of 4GB, and you have a tini tiny 160GB hard drive. To me, that's pretty much cutting the Mini's performance to half the level of the cheapest iMac, and only saving $400. Not a deal at all. Of course, if your goal is to spend as little as possible on a Mac, then this will do it. It most certainly, though, is not a deal. Bryan -Original Message-

Well, Isync was a bit of a bust. It wouldn't see my phone even though it was paired, which is obnoctious. Missingsync looks like a better option, but I think I need a missingsync driver for my phone. It's taking a while because I have to update to missingsync 2.5 from 1.5 and that's not going smoothly for some reason. also, I seem to have broken my phone in as far as the sim card, which may be another issue. Some programs don't work too well without a sim. I'll get this now though. The bit is clamped firmly between my teeth and I have a whole long weekend to play. Reporting problems with iTunes Store Purchases [was Re: An Itunes store issue]
Hi Krister, I'll point you to the Apple Support document on How to Report an Issue with your iTunes Store Purchase: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1933 If you check your account purchase history, you'll be able to view the transaction record for your purchase and copy the order number. Then you can use item chooser menu to locate the Report a problem button. Press it (VO-Space), and then paste in the information about the order number and date, identify the track, and describe the problem. They'll be able to check the track based on your information and, if there's a problem, correct it so you can download a good version, or credit you for the purchase if they can't provide a satisfactory version. You get an email response within 24 hours, and I think they can do a live chat session if you need to interact with them in real time as a follow up. 1. Navigate to View My Account in the Store menu on the menu bar (VO- M to menu bar, press s to go to Store, arrow down, press v to View My Account, and return). 2. Enter your password in the dialog window for your account and return 3. Use item chooser menu to find the Purchase History button and press it (VO-Space). 4. The purchase history page will contain a list of all your purchases with the latest one at the top. Copy the date and order number information. (You can use the VO-Shift-C last phrase copied to pasteboard shortcut, then Command-V to paste in your report of the problem in the next step). 5. Re: Reporting problems with iTunes Store Purchases [was Re: An Itunes store issue]
Hi Krister, I'm going to give you the email contact link for the iTunes Store Customer service: http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact.html Your iTunes account page interface now seems to take you to the support FAQ page when you use the Report a Problem, rather than bringing up the contact email so you can just type in your question. No reason for you to wander around that page looking for the Email contact. (It does help to identify the date and order number of your purchase, though). I've only ever had to contact Customer service twice, and the interface was simpler then. Re: My Mac Mini
Scott, I think your point about the mini as a good entry point for potential switchers is an excellent one. I never would have laid out the $ for an Imac. We have plenty of monitors around here, so buying a monitor was not a issue We also have mice, so ditto there, no need to get one. Yes, I did have to buy a keyboard, because the keyboard we have are all ps2, so that was a nonstarter. But the trade off there is I got one I like the feel of better than what comes standard these days on the Imac, and its Bluetooth to boot, so I am anticipating having more uses for it than just with my mini. I got the middle model of the mini, not the very cheapest one, because I wanted a larger hard drive and the 4gb of ram. For what I want, web surfing, email, word processing and music listening and organizing, the mini is fine. the only thing I haven't done yet that I want to do is scan and ocr, but that is a function of me not being able to find a satisfactory efficient solution for the Mac, rather than a limitation of this particular Mac. Voiceover on ipad
Hello everyone. I've just been looking at the user guide for the ipad on Apple's support site and it mentions VO as usual. It looks like VO is going to behave similar to that which is found on the iphone accept there is a 4 finger gesture for moving between sections of screen or something. No mention of what voice is on the ipad though. Also, it says for more info on the accessibility built in to ipad to go to the apple accessibility pages so I'm hoping that our friends won't be long in updating the accessibility site with ipad goodness. Sorry for such a long post. Enjoy. Matt -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: Voiceover on ipad
I am really looking forward to hearing about keyboard access with vo. Since there is none with an iphone, since you can't use an external keyboard with that device, I hope that limitation hasn't also been imposed on the Ipad. Re: Voiceover on ipad
The keyboard doc hasn't shipped yet, but I will let you know when I am able to use it. Right now, the problem is that if you only have one bluetooth keyboard it can only be paired with one device at a time, so, I would have to unpair it from my iMac to pair it with my iPad. At the moment, I don't know of a way to get it paired back with my iMac with out sighted assistance using a mouse. If someone knows how to do this, I will gladly try it before I get my keyboard doc and let you all know how it goes. Re: a question ablout amadeus pro
Hi Annie, I'm going to try to remember, I did this for the first time last week, and haven't done it since. Once you've set everything, go over to where it says click here. Now, you'll have to root mouse to voice over. by holding control, option, command, and if you're on a macbook, the function key also. with f5. After that, you hit vo, shift, space bar to click, and then you'll get a dialog. I did something wrong because the quality I ended up with was awful even though it was suppose to be 64kbt, so I'll have to try it again soon. Re: labeling buttons, unknowns, and blank areas?
Hi Hank. To make lables, when you have something you want to label press vo+shift+7 and write the text, you must of course have the voiceOver cursor placed on the button, unknown or what you want to label. It is a great feature, I found out how to do it in this week, because I looked for something else. I can tell you that it is easy to export your labels. If you open voiceover, and go to export, when you can save them, remember to choose labels in the menu in the middle. You get a file called voiceover labels or what you choose to name it. I have not tried to import labels yet, but I guess it is as simple as export labels. Have a nice day. Annie. 2010/4/3, hank smith hanksmi...@gmail.com: hello how do I label unlabeled buttons, unknowns, and blank areas with vo on snow labeled? once I label these things how do I save them and a. share them with another user and b. reload them if I should ever want to use them on another mac. thanks Hank -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: Selecting links in Syrinx
If it doesn't seem to work, after hitting the command-shift-l combination, try hitting command-tab to go to your Safari window. I find that sometimes when I use the command-shift-l, it actually does open the link, but it does not automatically put the focus on the Safari window so I have to command-tab over to it. It's not really a problem, it's just something I've noticed. On Apr 3, 2010, at 5:44 PM, E.J. RE: My Mac Mini
Scott, I think that I agree with you in principle. The Mini is great for accomplishing basic tasks. It is great for someone that wants to try Mac. It is a neat little computer for the price and size. All that I'm saying, though, is that I don't think that it is the best value. If you want to get the most for your money, the entry level iMac and MacBook do a lot more than a Mini would at the same price. So, switchers and people that are trying out Mac will have a good affordable time with the entry level Mini. If someone wanted to try Mac, though, they should get the absolute basic Mini configuration, so that they can take advantage of the very low price. If they start upgrading the Mini's processor, memory, and hard drive, they'll spend so much on the upgrades that they would get more computer for their money by buying an iMac or MacBook instead. That's what I mean when I say that, with $1,200 in hand, using that same money will get you an iMac that is twice as powerful as the Mini that you'd buy for the same price. Bryan -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionar...@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Scott Howell Sent: Saturday, April 03, 2010 5:55 AM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: My Mac Mini Bryan, I'm not looking to turn this into a pissing contest because in general I find your posts and such of value and informative. Re: just paired macbook with windows mobile phone.
Hi, Here's the link to the Apple Knowledge Base article for the mobile phones that are supported through iSync under Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5, and 10.6: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2824 In addition to the phones supported directly by Apple's iSync application listed in the document, some additional phones may have iSync plug-ins that will provide this support. This is particularly true for newer model phones if the manufacturer provides a plug-in. I think the Windows Mobile phones are probably not compatible and the manufacturers generally choose not to provide plug-ins that would make it easy to transfer information to a Mac. Sorry if my comments were misleading; I was in the middle of giving directions on how to migrate contacts for someone using a Nokia phone on another list. For the Windows Mobile platform, your best bet is probably to use the Missing Sync ($39.95), as Erik mentioned: http://www.markspace.com/products/windowsmobile/mac/windows-mobile-sync-software.html Other than that, I've heard that you can migrate contacts from your PC to your Mac Address Book using Thunderbird. Here's one (older) page that turned up in a Google Search: http://www.neilturner.me.uk/2007/08/21/thunderbird_and_mac_os_x.html I don't have any experience with the Windows side of things, though. If you were trying to go phone to phone, there's a way to migrate the phone contacts over to an iPhone, for example, by simply inserting the sim card and then going to Settings Mail, Contacts, Calendars and double tapping the Import SIM Contacts option. This may not give you the formatting that you want, though. Again, this is for the iPhone, and only based on my reading, no direct experience. I suspect that this sort of information can be found in the Take Control of Switching to the Mac eBook. Re: My Mac Mini
Well, you make a good point, but, you need to check current configurations. You can get a mini with 320GB drive, 4GB ram and a 2.53GHZ processor for $799. Yes, if you have to buy a keyboard, mouse and monitor, the price jumps. However, a lot of us came over from windows and already had those devices. The bottom line is that for $400 less your only giving up a faster drive and a tiny bit of CPU speed. Yes, the monitor is included and will make things more compact. if I were sighted, I would have jumped at the IMac, the monitor is beautiful. Unfortunately,I have an older mini and they only offered 2GB of ram at the time. Over all though, I will admit that a Imac would have been a better deal for me. Re: iPad bluetooth keyboard
I believe the apple wireless keyboard has a touch pad. As the touchpad commander works much like the iPhone screen, I don't think it would be a leap to have it work similarly when connected to the iPad. If this isn't how it works initially, I am sure it will in short order. Having the link rotor dialogue open as it does on the mac might also be simple, as it's essencially the same thing with the keyboard interface vs a touch interface. A trend toward the iPhone os (iPad os being the same thing) coming to resemble the VO interface on the Mac is probably unavoidable as they take on more and more computer functions. We shall see in the coming weeks no doubt. J On Apr 1, 2010, at 3:08 PM, Esther wrote: Hello, Sorry if this was not clear, I have an iPod Touch and navigate with the rotor to links. My main point was that I thought it was likely that some extension of the VO capabilities for the iPhone and iPod Touch might make it into the keyboard shortcut set of commands for the iPad, given the support of both the dockable keyboard and the BT keyboard. begin quote I can't imagine that the iPad would make you alternate between typing on a keyboard and then moving over to touch the screen just to handle some of the navigation you would carry out with gestures on the touch screen. That would really be clunky! end quote On the touch screen of the hand-held iPod Touch or iPhone, the continuity of gesture with flicks, use of rotor and entry of text with the virtual keyboard is fairly well integrated. On the current generation Macs, we work largely with keyboard shortcuts and the newest machines incorporate some of the gestures used on the iPhone and iPod Touch. My speculation was that Apple might introduce VO extensions for the iPad that function like the keyboard shortcuts to make it easier to work from the keyboard alone for simple functions, rather than have you type on your keyboard, put this down to pick up your iPad, perform a few touch screen gestures and then put the iPad down again to return to your keyboard. I was not saying that the current iPhone or iPod Touch did not let you navigate by links headings, etc. Some of the limitations in the range of navigation options on web pages on the iPhone and iPod Touch resemble the restrictions in VO performance in its first release under Tiger. Since Chris was wondering about support for the VO keyboard shortcuts that we use under the full Mac system, and since I don't believe he uses either an iPhone or iPod Touch, I was trying to address his questions about the likelihood for a hybrid version of the VO on an iPad that uses some of the keyboard shortcuts on the regular Mac keyboards, just as the iPhone and iPod Touch gestures have made their way into the expanded usage of Mac computers under recent OS and model updates. I don't usually speculate like this, and since we will all soon know, I'll end all my comments on this thread to save bandwidth. Cheers, Esther Joe Plummer wrote: That is not correct. Re: My Mac Mini
Bryan, I would agree that for the horsepower an iMac would be a better investment and I wouldn't upgrade the Mini. If someone really wanted a MIni, of course I would get the 2.53Ghz 4Gb ram machine since it has the 320Gb internal drive. Yes it is 5400rpm, but I haven't notice a significant difference between the 5400 or 7200 for most tasks. Of course I have a Macbook Pro, but if I ever replace this machine, I'm going to have the decision to purchase another laptop or just get another iMac. :) Well that will be a few years down the road for sure and by then, who knows what they'll roll out the Apple factory. :) On Apr 3, 2010, at 7:24 PM, Bryan Smart wrote: Scott, I think that I agree with you in principle. What do you

Re: My Mac Mini
Hi: I did originally get my Mini to try it out as I was a new Mac user, but since I don't do a lot of heavy downloading or stream video, the Mini is plenty fast. I have a lot less problems with it than a lot of people seem to have with the MacBooks. My husband streams movies and videos all of the time with little lag, less than his Windows computer with much more memory had. It doesn't take up much space either. I'm happy with my Mini. Just my two cents worth. It's definitely not a laptop though. On Apr 1, 2010, at 7:25 AM, Bryan Smart wrote: I think that people are getting the concept of the Mini all wrong. The Mini is not a laptop. If you try to use it like some sort of portable, then you're of course free to try, but Apple has not designed it to be a portable computer, and so, if it doesn't work like that, they won't care that you can't make it suit that purpose. Its also not intended to be a headless Mac for blind people. The Mini is designed to fit two types of situations only. 1. You don't know if Mac is for you, and you want a cheap way to try it out. 2. You need a low-powered Mac to handle some basic tasks, such as being a home or small office server. That's it. If the Mini feels underpowered, it is because its underpowered. It is powered by a mobile processor, uses laptop memory, and slower laptop hard drives. If the Mini sucks at being a portable computer, it is because it isn't a portable computer. Its a cheap desktop Mac. If the Mini sucks as a headless Mac, then that is because it isn't designed to run without a monitor. People are supposed to buy a Mini to use with their existing PC hardware, as part of evaluating if they'd like to really use Mac in the future. Of course, using a Mac with a PC keyboard and mouse means that you miss out on a lot, also. Stil, it is a way to try this stuff to see if you'll like it, or if it will be a waste of money, without forcing you to pay a lot for the chance to try it out. If you're serious at all about using the Mac, you probably won't stay with a Mini for very long. The internal hard drives are slow, the capacity won't go any higher than 500GB, the memory won't expand very far, the processor is underpowered, so on and so on. Not trying to rain on your parade. I love hacking around with what's possible in equipment. The thing is, if, after using a Mini, you've become serious enough to get frustrated with what it can't do, then it is time to sell your Mini to another newbie, and upgrade to a MacBook, an IMac, or a Mac Pro that will do more. For example, if you're moving a computer from room to room to browse the web, then you really should be using a MacBook.
