External HD

2010-08-07 Thread AndyBaracco
i just realized that I posted this inquiry to the wrong list. it happens when
you have been up since 4:15 AM.
i am considering buying a mac. I have a Seagate 1 TB external USB HD that is
about 3 quarters full of audio books, music, etc. it is formatted NTFS. Could
i use this HD on a Mac, and what would i have to do first? Would it have to be
reformatted and, if so, would i have to back up the media somewhere else and
restore it when the reformat was accomplished?

Re: Iphone and braille note apex

2010-08-07 Thread Isaac Obie

 Hi Sonia,
There're two ways. 1. the device has the number written on the underside.
2. TRhe authenthicate code is given in the reading material. For example:
the HumanWare Braillleconnect devices and the brailliant devices use 1234 as
their paring code.

I believe you need to find the list of supported devices on the iphone. this
is where the Apple people may come in handy. Do understand that I've never
really done a thing with the iphone on my own. I don't own one yet.
Yesterday was the first time I ever ooked up to one.

Re: External HD

The Mac can read NTFS partitions, but out of the box, it can't write to them.
With that said, it'd probably best if you were able to reformat the disc to the
Mac format.
In my opinion, go head and get another 1TB drive, as they just keep
getting cheaper and cheaper, and have that Mac formatted. Then, you can copy
the files over to the Mac formatted and have 2 copies of all your files. You
can never back that stuff up enough:)

Hope that helps

 You have two options.

 Options:
 1. You can hold the option key down at boot and switch between the bootable
devices with the left/right arrow keys.
 2. You can open SYstem Preferences, select the startup disk option, and
choose which volume/device to boot from.

Option 2 is your best bet .

Hi list,

This is a find from circumstance.

I was having a day of doom without internet because of a sucky provider, so i
decided to use my iphone for checking mail etc.

Then i found out how i can delete move to previous or next message in a thread
within the iphones mail app.

I wanted to know if someone can tell me what the shorcut is for previous or

Oh, for my modem 3g connection, i just did a tethering with my current tel
provider and it works seriously well.

One stone, 3 birds. Wont go back to that stupid usb modem anymore :)

Hi.

Yes the apex is supported.

Be sure that bluetooth is turned on on your IPhone.

You will have to search for the apex from your IPhone. I think the code is
or 1234. IF you need further assistance please write again.

Best regards Annie.

Would anyone be able to give a bit of guidance on how to begin? I read

This is a fault of digital rights management schemes in general. The point of
DRM after all is to limit the use of the content. As such, the more people who
have the keys to the kingdom, the less limiting it is and the more chance of
unauthorized use. I'm sorry man, but that's just the way it is, and when
you're talking about this stuff, it works the other way around. IE, you could
just as easily have been a mac user all your life, switched to windows, and
then found out to your horror that Oh sh*t. My DRM isn't supported on this
platform. That is one reason among many that I have been a boycotter of such
things since I first got my computer more than 10 years ago now.
 * Lack of VoiceOver accessibility support. VoiceOver as far as I can tell,
does not support the onMouseover event handler. Maybe you folks have a
 solution for this?
Well, no promises, but if you want to give us an example website to work on,
there are a lot of really smart and experienced mac users here and we'll do
what we can to get you up and running.

 * Flash support: As far as I know, VoiceOver still does not support Flash How
many years have we had support in Windows. Eight, perhaps? How do folks who
have made the near complete Windows-to-Mac transition work around this short
 of switching to Windows?
Flash support for windows? We have? Hum, yes I've read something about that,
but to be honest, I teach jaws and window-eyes on all windows platforms, and I
have yet to see really elegant flash support in either high end package. And
at that, if the developer of your website flash content decides to ignore the
accessibility features that are available in flash then your viewing experience
will be poor on any platform. Unfortunately for us, apple has decided that
adobe products are redundant and adobe has decided against building apple
accessibility support. Fortunately for us, HTML 5 will hopefully emerge and
put adobe out of the active web content business. It's just a waiting game at
this point. but again, if you want to post a specific example of the content
you're trying to use, some one might know of or be able to find a workaround.
Flash isn't hopeless on the mac, only the people who design and develop on it
are.

 Happy for folks' perspectives.

Yeh, sorry I couldn't be more immediate help.

 Thanks. Rajiv

Hello. My goal is to switch completely to the mac but over time. The good
news is that you don't have to switch completely right away. I use VM Fusion
and run Windows 7 and the mac os at the same time. Then I get the best of
both worlds. I can gradually learn to use the IWork suite while still
getting my work done. VMFusion costs about 100. I installed Windows 7 and
JAWS. I am also trying Window-Eyes. It works very well. In fact, there are
two real advantages.
1. I can store all my documents on the Mac side and have a clean image of
the Windows OS. If I lose my windows image, I just restore my image and I'm
good to go.

Hi.

I have had my mac for almost a year now, and I love it.

I have never been good friends with flash, in my opinion flash also gives some
problems on windows. I have a vmware windows xp, that I use when it is
absolutely needed. There is only two thing that is not really good for me on
the mac, one thing is ocr, yes I can use readiris, but finereader 10 is the
best ocr recognition software ever, so I run that from windows. THen I still
have some issues with wordprocessing, that I am not fully satisfied with. That
has to do with making headings in documents, so they are easier to navigate
through, I've never found a solution on that, but for everything else, I use my
mac.

Best regards Annie.

Mini or MacBookPro?

2010-08-07 Thread Geoff Waaler

Greetings y'all,

For the benifit of those who don't hang out on the viPhone list, I recently
started assisting Cara Josh and Olivia with the management of this list.
Since I don't yet have a Mac until now I only read posts that Google
suspected of being spam.

This weekend my state is exempting back to school items such as computers
from sales tax. I've been considering migrating to the Apple world for a
while and the 8% savings is tempting.

I am a total, hence gaming is not a priority. I anticipate my primary uses
would be web surfing, email, playing/editing audio, and hopefully app
development. I therefore don't believe that processor speed and memory
would make a lot of difference, but perhaps more experienced Mac users can
comment.

With these assumptions in mind I'm considering either the 13 inch low end
MacBookPro (2.4 GHZ processor) for $1,200 or the Mac Mini for $800.
Comparing the specs it would appear that $400 would buy me a keyboard, 2GB
extra memory, a 13 inch display, fewer USB ports, an extra pound to cary
around and 70 GB less disk storage.

I have a four year old USB display that I plug into my Dell desktop on those
rare occasions when I need sighted assistance.

Okay, so at long last, here are my questions. Any input would be greatly
appreciated!

1. Considering my anticipated usage are my assumptions about memory and
processor speed accurate? If not, any details would be very helpful.

2. Will the Mac Mini work without a display?

3. I already own an Apple wireless keyboard. I assume this would work with
the Mini if I unpare it from my iPhone?

TIA and best regards.
Geoff

Re: Mac vs. Windows Accessibility was Re: Reopen office

2010-08-07 Thread Barry Hadder
Hi,

Mouse-over works fine with vo and Safari. the only problem is that vo doesn't
announce that the element is a mouse-over.

If we want to be intellectually honest, flash support on the Windows side has
always been very limited at best. Flash will soon become obsolete anyhow.

I don't use DRM content and never felt like I had to. That would never be a
deciding factor for me using or not using a platform where there is already a
screen reading solution built in to the system that I didn't have to pay extra
for and that, in my opinion, is superior to Windows screen readers in many ways.

If you feel like you have to do any of the fore mentioned activities, run
Windows virtually.

 Hi.

I am running the latest version of Open Office and am having an annoying

Whenever I arrow up or down through a document, VO will make a soft
clicking sound, say edit Text and then read the text on that
particular line. Whenever I try to interact with the document, I am
only permitted to interact with the line that I am currently on.

Is there a way to change the behavior of either VO or Open Office to
make listening to text easier as I arrow through it, or is this
something with which one must live when using Open Office and VoiceOver?
Are there any must settings in the View menu options that need to be
 taken into consideration?

 Thanks and best regards,

 Mike

Re: Mini or MacBookPro?

2010-08-07 Thread David McLean
The mac mini is really meant to be a mini desktop not a portable unit. Also it
doesn't work well at all without a monitor.
That being said if you don't need portability and you have an old or a cheap
monitor kicking around it's a great option and has as much horespower as the
basic macbook pro. It is also considerably cheaper so that is certainly a plus.
Hopefully that helps. 7, 2010, at 10:37 AM, Geoff Waaler wrote:

I therefore don't believe that processor speed and memory would
make a lot of difference, but perhaps more experienced Mac users can comment.

With these assumptions in mind I'm considering either the 13 inch low end
MacBookPro (2.4 GHZ processor) for $1,200 or the Mac Mini for $800. Comparing
the specs it would appear that $400 would buy me a keyboard, 2GB extra
memory, a 13 inch display, fewer USB ports, an extra pound to cary around and
 70 GB less disk storage.

Re: Mini or MacBookPro?

2010-08-07 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Jeff,
Yes, you can use that wireless keyboard with a mini, and yes, you need a
monitor with the mini, and I don't know if usb displays work or not. The other
thing you get with the notebook that you don't get with the mini is the touch
pad. Since your keyboard lacks a numeric keypad, you won't be able to use num
pad commander with your mini And Unless you buy the magic trackpad, you won't
have a touch pad either for using track pad commander. which leaves you with
just keyboard commander. there are a lot of multi-finger voice over commands
that can be made a whole lot simpler with the use of these commanders, so if
you go for the mini, you may want to look around for an older Apple wireless or
even usb keyboard and/or purchase the magic trackpad. When I got my mini, Apple
offered an upgrade, so you could get 4 gb of memory, which I did, because I
thought I was going to run Windows and fusion or bootcamp at the time I bought
the mini. Unless you need portability or have limited desktop real estate that
would make a notebook more attractive than mini plus keyboard plus monitor and
possible magic trackpad, I'd get the Mini.

Hello Sonia,
I've just come from the Apple Store. I hooked up a brailleconnect12 to the
iphine 4. Now it isn't easy to do this. there'are several steps that're not
spoken. You really need the expert assistance of the Apple people. So why
don't you let it rest a while and plan to go to your local Apple store and
let them help you with it???
Just a suggestion. Obviously you're not getting something right in the setup
process.

I didn't try to do it alone. I had the Apple guys do it! It worked well.

Re: Mac vs. Windows Accessibility was Re: Reopen office

2010-08-07 Thread Mike Arrigo
Hi, as far as the mouse over thing, voice over works fine with this, you will
notice that on some elements, voice over says clickable after the item this
means you can activate this item as if it's a link. As far as flash goes, blame
adobe for this, not voice over, Adobe has been unwilling to expose their
content using the accessibility apis that Apple has provided. Actually, with
the introduction of html 5 which provides native support for videos and other
similar content, flash will hopefully become a thing of the past. For me, I
usually disable safari plug ins unless I'm viewing something such as a youtube
video, this usually causes the site to provide a nonflash version of the page.

Re: Mini or MacBookPro?

2010-08-07 Thread Mike Arrigo
Either model would work fine for what you want, the only thing is, the mini
requires that a monitor be connected, not turned on, just connected. Otherwise
voice over will be quite sluggish. If you have a monitor you can connect, I
would go with the mini, otherwise the mac book pro would be a good choice. Or
you could just get the regular mac book for $999, that would also meet your
needs I think.

You can also use any USB keyboard and it will work fine, that's what I do for

 Hi Jeff,
Yes, you can use that wireless keyboard with a mini, and yes, you need a
monitor with the mini, and I don't know if usb displays work or not. The
other thing you get with the notebook that you don't get with the mini is the
touch pad. Since your keyboard lacks a numeric keypad, you won't be able to
use num pad commander with your mini And Unless you buy the magic trackpad,
you won't have a touch pad either for using track pad commander. which leaves
you with just keyboard commander. there are a lot of multi-finger voice over
commands that can be made a whole lot simpler with the use of these
commanders, so if you go for the mini, you may want to look around for an
older Apple wireless or even usb keyboard and/or purchase the magic trackpad.
When I got my mini, Apple offered an upgrade, so you could get 4 gb of
memory, which I did, because I thought I was going to run Windows and fusion
or bootcamp at the time I bought the mini. Unless you need portability or
have limited desktop real estate that would make a notebook more attractive
than mini plus keyboard plus monitor and possible magic trackpad, I'd get the
 Mini.

I think that's probably not the most productive attitude to take. Obviously

Personally though, I'd rather hear button button button than sweet dick all.
At least depending on how bad I want the content I can press the buttons and
see what they do if they say button. I might even be able to label them if
it's really really important. It would be nice if developers just labelled
buttons properly. It would also be nice if they gave us access keys. It would
also be nice if they would render the video and anamations tactiley on monitors
that support the feature. I'd also rather they provided some one to take my
client calls and clean my house so I could spend all day goofing off on the

Hi,

If money is a major concern, I would go with a regular Macbook or a Mac mini.
The advantage of the Macbook is you get the multi gesture trackpad with it.
You could buy one separately for $70 that connects via bluetooth but, why if
you don't have to? The Mac mini doesn't work well at all without a monitor
hooked up. The new Mac minis have HDMI ports now so you can hook it up to an
hdtv as well. Anyone of these options is more than enough to do the tasks you
intend to do. I do a lot of audio stuff on my Mac mini and I only have 2gb of
ram and a 2.0ghz processor. And of course iTunes is a breath of fresh air on
the Mac after using it on windows. :). You can contact me off list if you want
more detailed info.

Re: Mini or MacBookPro?

2010-08-07 Thread Geoff Waaler
Thanks much to all for their suggestions!! Since I don't want to be hooked
to a display it seems that my choices are down to the MacBook vs MacBookPro.

From Eric's description the track pad sounds like a priority. Is that what
distinguishes a macBook from a pro? As Ricardo points out I could purchase
one separately, but I would think that having it built in without needing to
keep track of another peripheral would be an attractive option.

Take care.

Hi Jeff,

As you are a iPhone user I think you would really like the Mac book with
built in multi gesture track pad. Also, I use a 13 inch mac book white
case and it would certainly do all you have mentioned. I just hook up a usb
hub and I'm good to go. I love being able to take it with me when I
travel. Nothing against the mini but if you have only one Mac it might be
nice to have the flexibility of the Mac Book.

Nice thing is you cant make a wrong choice. Both would work well.

Hi Geoff,

No. Both the Macbook, and Macbook pro come with a multi gesture trackpad. The
things that separate one from the other are
1. Material: the Macbook is plastic while the Macbookpro is allonym.
2. Upgradeable: The Macbook pro will allow you to expand to 8gb of ram and a
faster processor than the macbook.
3. connections: I believe the Macbook pro has more USB ports as well as a
firewire port.

These are the main differences between the 2 Macs.

2. Just behind this is the line-in jack. I think it's also a digital input,

Right,

But if you added the extra 2gb of ram to a Macbook, it would be the same price

Would anyone be able to give a bit of guidance on how to begin?
I read

Hello Sonia,
Congratulations! That Apex is supposed to behave and connect like charm!
After all, this is HumanWare's latest bonus baby! So I guess you'll have to
figure something out.
One thing I learned today is that the iphone 4 seems only able to handle one
input device at a time. I wanted to connect a braille display and a
keyboard. It wouldn't do it! The guy helping me said he was going to need to
talk to the genius bar guys about this one. Have you or anyone else run

From Eric's description the track pad sounds like a priority. Is that what
distinguishes a macBook from a pro? As Ricardo points out I could purchase
one separately, but I would think that having it built in without needing to
keep track of another peripheral would be an attractive option.

 Hi Jeff,

As you are a iPhone user I think you would really like the Mac book with
built in multi gesture track pad. Also, I use a 13 inch mac book white case
and it would certainly do all you have mentioned. I just hook up a usb hub
and I'm good to go. I love being able to take it with me when I travel.
Nothing against the mini but if you have only one Mac it might be nice to
have the flexibility of the Mac Book.

Nice thing is you cant make a wrong choice. Both would work well.

Otherwise voice over will be quite sluggish. If you have a monitor you can

good choice. Or you could just get the regular mac book for $999, that
would also meet your needs I think.

 Google suspected of being spam.

This weekend my state is exempting back to school items such as
computers from sales tax. I've been considering migrating to the Apple
world for a while and the 8% savings is tempting.

I am a total, hence gaming is not a priority. I anticipate my primary
uses would be web surfing, email, playing/editing audio, and hopefully app
development.

I have a four year old USB display that I plug into my Dell desktop on
those rare occasions when I need sighted assistance.

I assume this would work
with the Mini if I unpare it from my iPhone?

 TIA and best regards.

2010-08-07 Thread Aman Singer
Hi, Isaac and all.
I'm afraid I can't confirm your experience, either with two input
sources or with connecting a braille display. I have connected several
braille displays to the iPhone, including a Braille Connect 12, and have had
no issue connecting the display without sighted assistance. I can recall
nothing that was not spoken, and the connection generally went smoothly.
Note that I did try the unit through the braille connection method in Voice
Over itself, and not through connecting as if one were wishing to use a
bluetooth headset.
Similarly, I did not have any issue connecting a standard bluetooth
keyboard while the braille display was connected. The keyboard I used was,
however, not Apple but a no-name brand, it shouldn't make any difference,
though, because the bluetooth profile used should be the same. Both the
keyboard and the braille display worked for input at the same time. It may
be worth connecting a few other keyboards to the unit while a display is
connected and seeing how this goes.
HTH.

   Hi.

   Yes the apex is supported.

Be sure that bluetooth is turned on on your IPhone.

You will have to search for the apex from your IPhone. I think
the code is or 1234. IF you need further assistance please
   write again.

   Best regards Annie.

In that case, I'd think that the Braillenotes aren't supported
by iOS 4 to be used as braille displays. Best idea though to
be sure, is to check the apple accessibility page at
   http://apple.com/accessibility.

I found the iphone by searching for it on my braille note and
the services offered were things like hands-free and serial.
somehow the iphone can not find any bluetooth devises: it
   keeps saying searching
   but nothing appears

   Hello Sonia,
If you look in your Apex tutorial, after Options, then u for
user guide, in there somewhere it should cover pairing with
   cellphones.
Are you near an Apple Store? I went to one today and we
paired my braille display with the iphone 4. So look under
options, u for user guide and see what you can find on
   pairing with a cellphone

Hello. I've tried looking online for some good instructions
on how to pair the iPhone with my braille note apex but I'm
   still confused.
Would anyone be able to give a bit of guidance on how to begin?
   I read
something about needing a bluetooth pin and i am not sure if
i need one for the Iphone or apex and where to get that
   info. Thanks everyone. :-)
