Re: clean install?
Wonder if those who are strong believers of a clean install are all x Windows users. Hahaha!!! Keep in mind that the Mac OS X is a very large and complex operating software. As you can see in the App Store download, it is over 4.3 GB. In the history of software computing, nothing has worked 100 percent perfectly with no bugs. Bugs are bound to happen. Isolated incidents are inevitable. Having said that, I will share my experience. I am guilty as charged of my own statement. I also thought that a clean install will make my Mac run faster and more smoothly. I first installed Lion as an upgrade over Snow Leopard. I had problems. Most of the bugs are small, none are show-stoppers. So I decided to do a clean install. Yes, things improved, but not in such a way that convinced me the clean install was the solution. I come to believe now that Lion was just a buggy version. When Mountain Lion came out, I installed it as an upgrade over Lion. Boy was it a huge difference over Lion. My startup time is much faster, and in just a few days of using it, I've not had any problems. So essentially, Mountain Lion made a better Mac out of my machine. I think it's an individual situation. If upgrading is not doing it for you, perhaps a clean install will take care of it. But don't think of upgrades as different from a clean install. Remember, if you think clean installs are better, you must be a Windows user. Lol! Upgrade is just as good as a clean install. At the moment, I have no desire to do a clean install of Mountain Lion. So, believe me, I respect and trust your judgement. However, when I purchased Lion last year, I did do an upgrade installation. Believe me, I wanted to do that, also, a lot of knowledgeable people like yourself told me it was no problem. However, something went wrong in my case! voiceover didn't behave well at all, moving around on web pages by heading etc, just didn't work half the time. I was having all kinds of problems like that. So, I went back and did a clean install. After that, I was much much happier. So, when I got ml, I simply took the extra time and did the clean install and then used the migration wizard to retrieve all my data. I didn't really even want to do that, because, it retrieved all my settings and preferences, so, really, this isn't a complete fresh install. But, so far, it's working ok. there are a few annoying things, but, it has nothing to do with performance, just new things voiceover says that I think we could do without So, I guess it just boils down to whatever works for the individual person. For the most part though, in the MacOS, this is unnecessary unless you are experiencing very erratic behavior. 99 times out of 100 I've been able to fix the issue by repairing disk permissions or removing and reinstalling an offending app. People should do what they are most comfortable doing although I'm one who doesn't care spending a huge amount of time fiddling with things when I could be enjoying them instead. Hi Donna, OK, just so we cover all possibilities. You don't have an encrypted hard drive right? Because VoiceOver does not speak at the login screen with an encrypted hard drive. OK, let's assume you don't have that since this just happened to you after installing Mount Lion. I posted an email a few moments ago about the merits of a clean install versus upgrade. I am out of ideas at the moment, but I am still brainstorming for you. I think your next step is probably taking the machine in and show it to the Genius Bar. I assume it is a laptop. RE: notification center
Yes, I'm curious about this as well. After a bit of experimentation and a few visits to activity monitor, I've noticed that Growl is no longer running at start-up, even if I manually add it. Growl Saphari and Growl Tunes are listed in start-up, but not growl itself. I had to disable hardware growler for the time being, because if I let it run at startup, I get stuck in this window that says hardware growler has no windows. Since I love it that Mountain Lion starts me off on the desktop like Snowy Kitty did, I'm trying not to run anything at startup that might interfere with that. Anyway, I'm guessing that all of these issues might be part of a bug that is fixed when new growl is released, but at the moment, it seems that growl and notification center don't want to coexist, at least not by default. If I open my apps folder and run growl manually, then it seems to work, but it refuses to run at startup even when I tell it to, and a lot of its general options are either greyed out or missing entirely. Again, I suspect a lot will be fixed when Growl 2.0 is released. So, it's just a matter of waiting and seeing what happens. I set up growl from within notification center, but that doesn't help either. In fact, I'm wondering if that might be part of the problem that's preventing growl from running at start-up. Hi, if it is music or other media excluding audiobooks, you can easily redownload them from the iTunes store. That being said, I would just backup and migrate that as well. Re: why can't Textedit serve as a replacement for MS Word?
Hello all, This is perhaps a late response but I found this a interesting discussion and I wasn't able to answer before because of holidays. What's most frustrating for me is that we can't edit office-documents of others without distroying the made lay-out. The only option here should be to use ms office for mac but this isn't accessible at all, right? Also with pages, it seems not compatible with some (basic) lay-out tasks of ms office documents. So, to solve this, we should use windows or wate until??? Kind regards, William Windels Op 24-jul.-2012, om 15:17 heeft Daniel McGee danielmcgee...@googlemail.com het volgende geschreven: Hi Johnny, here is the direct homepage for Bean. http://www.bean-osx.com/Bean.html I will now try to describe how you download and install it. Note two things. Once you understand how to install an app on the Mac, then it will apply to most apps that you want to use. With the exception of sometimes there being installers for some apps for the Mac but what I'm about to try to describe to you will probably be the most common situation. Another note. I am using OSX Lion so if it differs from previous Mac OS versions then I apologise but I reckon it shouldn't be all that much different. Ok lets use the website above as an example for you to install Bean and try it out for yourself! By the way it is a free app as you may probably notice. Once you go to the website, look for a link that called Download Bean. Once you've found it, do a VO space bar on it to start the download. Afther you've done this quickly press Command option L this will open the download dialog box. Chances are that if this does;doesn't happen i.e. the dialog box doesn't come up, it has been in my experience that it has already downloaded. However, if you catch the dialog then just wait for it to disappear and that should of downloaded it too. Now we have downloaded the DMG short of for Disc Image note you will find that this is a common thing that you will notice when downloading apps. Anyway we now need to get to this DMG. Chances are that by default it should be in your download's folder. A quick and nice easy way to get to it is to issue the keystroke Command Shift H. This will take you to your home directory. Once your there, locate the download folder and open it with command O. In there there should be an item called Bean install. Open this again with command O. there should be two times in there but what you want is the one called Bean.app if it just says Bean then you haven't gotten your file extensions enabled for you to reconize what extension your dealing with but trust me its an .app extention. If you want I'll tell you about how to enable that in another post but for now you want to copy this and place it in the application's folder. Copy command is Command C. Now close all your finder windows till you get to the desktop and to get to the application folder its simply a command shift A keystroke now paste the app in with command V and Bang! Its installed! The final thing you need to do is eject the disc image from the desktop this can be done with command E. Now go back to the application folder and open bean with Command O. A dialog box should pop up but just hit ok or whatever it it says. I can't remember now but once you dismiss that box, you will be in the bean application. Oh and to quit it, that is Command Q once your done messing around getting a feel for the word processor. I really hope this gets you going with downloading apps! I know at 1st it seems a weird way to install apps but I've had a Mac now about half a year and have come to think its a easier and simpler way to work with programmes than windows. That's just an opinion though. Enjoy! Re: why can't Textedit serve as a replacement for MS Word?
The way I see it, you have one other choice: only use Mac! If you have a doc or docx file, will converting it to rtf, then saving it in that format, solve the problem? I suppose this isn't a surprise, though, as no two editors do things the same way, so compatibility in all aspects of formatting is probably never going to happen. I'm okay with moving away from a massively expensive and slow program like Office and using lower-cost one like Pages, or free ones like Textedit. Maybe we can help stop the monopoly Office has over anyone wanting to do wordprocessing... Enjoy! Re: mountain Lion for non-English users
Hi, All the speech bugs that i wanted to be fixed in the Swedish Nuance/Realspeak voices are indeed fixed. The Swedish Oskar voice no longer clashes with the system voice making the system voice go silent. The strange announcing of characters when typing with typing echo set to characters are gone and so is the pitch bug, where the Realspeak voice suddenly would go either up or down in pitch for no apparent reason. Beware though that after installation of Mountain lion you have to go to program update and choose to update everything, and then you will get the voices you want. I'm surpriced dictation isn't available in Dutch, since it's one of the big languages. What doesn't surprice me in the least though is that the dictation feature isn't available in Swedish, and probably never will be. /Krister 25 jul 2012 kl. 22:12 skrev William Windels william.wind...@gmail.com: Hello, I haven't still 10.8 because the update program of apple has problems but, I can already write some toughts because of things I have heard of others: For non-English users, 10.8 seems not so powerful and complete. Re: working with data detectors?
Good Day: Here is the relevant extract from chapter 7 of the VoiceOver Getting Started guide, which is the last option in the VoiceOver help menu. Of course, VoiceOver now appears to be more specific about which data has been detected, but I think the instructions still apply. HTH: Henry Use data detectors in Mail messages Mail can detect specific information or data in messages and make it easier for you to use the data. For example, Mail can recognize phone numbers and add them to Contacts, or recognize a date and time and create an event in Calendar. In a message you’ve received, move the VoiceOver cursor over a phone number, email address, URL, street address, date, or time. Mail outlines the data as a field with a pop-up menu, and VoiceOver speaks “data detector.” To open a shortcut menu that contains commands for using the data, press VO-Shift-M. For example, if the data detector is the URL of a website, you can choose Open URL from the shortcut menu. Re: clean install?
Hi, You are correct with respect to problems being carried over from one version to another. Depending on the problem, some are eliminated due to the newer components installed and some continue or are exacerbated. So, it is, in many cases, an individual machine and personal experience that will determine which process to proceed with. With respect to the upgrade of one OS to another as in Panther to Tiger, or Lion to Mountain Lion, the upgrade process has been around as long as I can remember. I performed upgrade installs back in the OS 7, 8, 9 days and also used the upgrade process for my upgrade from Panther to Tiger when VO was first introduced. I just tried to use my RefreshaBraille 18 display this evening and it doesn't work here anymore. First off, I had previously defined it under Lion and successfully used it several times. Tonight after the ML install, it would never connect. So then I removed the device from the bluetooth list in the Braille device section of VO. Then when I tried to pair it back up, I kept getting an error that VO couldn't load a device driver for this device. Has anyone else had success getting any braille displays to work under Mountain Lion? I will probably give Apple a call about this. I sure hope they didn't break support like they did with the Hims devices on IOS. BTW, I never got prompted to enter any pairing codes and I usually do when hooking up the Refreshabraille display. Re: clean install?
Hello Tim, yes, you're right. I'd forgotten about the Upgrade option. The difference now is that the upgrade is the default action and a clean install requires more effort. I come from a systems programming background, so I always did a clean install, just as I've always done a complete backup of my system before installing a new OS. Re: clean install?
It turns out that the joke is on me, anyway. The original problem that caused me to do two reinstalls is back again, namely, sys diagnose files randomly opening up finder windows. However, VO is much more responsive after my clean install this time. I'm not sure which I'll do with the next upgrade. Teresa On Jul 27, 2012, at 11:55 PM, Shen goalb...@gmail.com wrote: Wonder if those who are strong believers of a clean install are all x Windows users. I only see the VoiceOver Getting Started Guide. Is that what you are referring to? If not, then I cannot locate the Mountain Lion Getting Started Guide. In the past, when the Users Guide for the Operating Systems came out, there would be 1 chapter dedicated to VoiceOver and the remainder would be related to the OS itself. Re: Exceedingly frustrating problem trying to attach file to e-mail
Hi, Christine, You have several options. The easiest one in my opinion is to find the files in downloads, copy them, and then either command-v to paste or command-option-v to move them right into the message body. Another method is to press command-shift-a to attach, and then, in the browse dialog, press command-shift-h to go to your home folder and find the downloads folder there. Re: mountain Lion for non-English users
Hi, I'm glad things are working for you guys. Apple rocks indeed, but I have to say, we finns weren't so lucky. New Finnish Mikko voice is now made in such a way, that it tries to read English correctly. Finnish and English have very different phonetics, and so this causes some conflicts in Finnish then. Also, if someone is depending on speech only, in some cases there is absolutely no way to know what actually is on the screen. There are conflicts like: word join. To join in English, but that actually is a Finnish word also. It is indeed very very annoying if a Finnish synth tries to detect English words and pronounce them the correct Enblish way -- especially if the word in question was meant to be a Finnish word and mean to be pronounced differently. Yes, I know there is a way to tell VoiceOver how to pronounce things, but this is a huge issue, and just making a customized dictionary won't fix it. Also, there still are issues with the Finnish braille table. The best solution at the moment is just to use the Swedish table. There at least most of the things are the same as in correct Finnish table. I found a workaround to get back my older Nuance voice, otherwise I would now be pulling my hair out. I really hope all these language issues will get fixed at some point -- the sooner, the better. Johanna On Jul 28, 2012, at 8:15 PM, Nektarios Mallas nmal...@gmail.com wrote: Hello. Beware though that after installation of Mountain lion you have to go to program update and choose to update everything, and then you will get the voices you want. I'm surpriced dictation isn't available in Dutch, since it's one of the big languages. Also, the dictation function that is introduced in 10.8 covers only a few languages and no dutch at the moment. I am courious when they will update their languages. I'll not completely negative about the new version until I have tested myself for a while but I'll always critical about new versions since they fix bugs very slow sometimes. RE: notification center
Hi there! Thanks to Chris's suggestion on this list, I simply went back to Growl version 1.22F or whatever it was called. It's the last version that put growl in system preferences. Anyway, I only stopped using that because I somehow got the impression that it didn't work with lion. Well, to make a long story a bit shorter, it seems to be working beautifully under Mountain Lion, so unless there's a very compelling reason to update it at a later date, I'm planning to just keep that version; it does what I need it to do, and as long as it works, that's good enough for me. Wonderful wonderful wonderful!
Hello All. I am going to copy Apple Accessibility into this message. OK, have not configured mail yet in Mountain Lion, but, I want to thank publicly, all those beta testers, developers and of course Apple for making Mountain Lion a joy to work with. I without reading any guide, have installed Skype and have used it, Face Time, notification centre and now the lovely Calendar which is a great improvement to what we had in Lion and Snow Lepard. I think we should thank everyone who have worked hard to make this release a wonderful experience. It may not be perfect, and it may be full of bugs, but without the vision of Apple and the dedicated support from all those who have dedicated themselves to make Voice Over to work with many applications should be thanked publicly so I am doing this. Thank you all. Kawal. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. To post to this group, send email to macvisionaries@googlegroups.com. Observations about mountain lion so far
Okay. I am going to try to dictate this entire message, because I wanted to see exactly what the result is if it is left uncorrected. I have some interesting observations about mountain lion. Beginning with Safari six. And I think you'll find this quite interesting. It used to be the case that enlightenment, as well as Snow Leopard before it, that whenever you open the page in Safari, you didn't always know when the page loaded because it never made a little sound that was supposed to make. Sometimes it did; but, sometimes it did not. And whenever that was the case, you didn't get always and I Gurode exactly when the page loaded and when it was still loading. So far, with Mountain lion, this problem seems to have entirely going away! This, so far as I'm concerned, is nothing but a good thing at least in my opinion. The dictation, which I am now using, is not done on the Mac itself; rather, what you say in dictation mode is sent to the Apple servers, and, the Apple servers send you back what you say or what it thinks you said in text. In fact, I hardly ever type anymore. This, assumes however, that the servers are working correctly. Yesterday, there was a slight hiccup in the servers; and as a result, the dictation was down for a short while. This text seems to be pretty accurate so far. There is however with respect to the dictation, a limit as to how much it can take at the time. I think, maybe, that the character limit is 160 characters. However, I'm not entirely certain of that. I find that it is best to say perhaps three or four sentences, then, release the dictation key and but the process take place. Now, I know what you're thinking. You're probably thinking, wouldn't it be faster than just a type. Well, maybe, but, this is fun. I must've that, however, but I am a little surprised that the dictation is as good as it is considering don't get who we are microphone but I'm using. With respect to the notice section, I think that we are all pretty much agreed that it leaves something to be desired, but, perhaps they will improve this in the future releases who knows, I hope so. Of course, most of us are familiar with the fact that Apple has not given us access to the hidden menus; or rather, those menus which were hidden before in certain apps that didn't use the standard menu accessibility procedures. I'm thinking, maybe, I'll drop box in this case. And, of course, others have mentioned other applications which have hitherto been on accessible in this way, but, which are now accessible through mountain lion. I think somebody mentioned with a program like this once. Anyway, I find myself not just pleased with Mountain lion; but rather, extraordinarily pleased with that. I wonder what marvelous updates they will come up with in the future to further improve the software. But then again, I'm sure we're all wondering that. Well, that's about all. PS. This message has been entirely dictated, and, not a single word of it has been typed. I have not touched the keyboard at all, except, to press the F8 key from time to time. That was the best in key., Let me try to get the F in key. All I think I'm losing my accuracy here. The F and G. Okay, I'm just going to have to give in and type this. the FN key. Well, I guess everything has its limits.Sincerely, The Constantly Barefooted Ray!!! Now a very proud and happy Mac user!!! Re: Observations about mountain lion so far
Hello. I have been having a lot of fun with Mountain lion these last few days, and I would like to comment on what you said. I, too, by the way, I'm dictating this entire letter. Just because I can. In the first place, the instances of the web loading noise being made by voice over being intermittent is still happening to me. Eat.G that, sometimes voiceover will make the loaded complete noise, and sometimes it will not. I do not see any factors which are consistent between these times. However, being on broadband cable, I usually just assume that a webpage loads within three or four seconds, and act accordingly. It should not lead me astray so far. About notification Center: I think it was designed, as was the OS, for sighted people. That having been said, Apple should be highly applauded, as I have commented before, at its universal accessibility. This does not mean, however, that notification Center must necessarily be adapted for voiceover users; in the case of many voiceover users, as has been discussed, there is no real need for it, given the redundancy of alerts and messages we already received. This may not be the case, however, presided users, who often used to split the computer with little to no audio enhancement, unfortunately. Okay, I am about done having fun with dictation.
