Hi,

I just uploaded the app file to my server. I'll leave it there for a week for
everyone who wants to download. It's not the whole DMG file but the app itself.
Here it works fine hopefully it'll also work for you.

Issue with Safari

2012-08-23 Thread Rahul Bajaj
Hi all,

I'm facing a weird issue while using Safari in ML.
I've mostly faced this issue wile using the Firefox version of
Facebook's mobile site in Safari, but it has happened with a couple of
other sites as well.
So, when I click on a link, VO starts saying every link with .PHP in the end.
The entire page becomes really messy.
And it starts working again when I open the same site after a few minutes.

Has anyone else faced this extremely irritating problem?

Cheers,
Rahul

Re: TextEdit question

2012-08-23 Thread Alex Hall
Just like anywhere, it's cmd-right. I think of cmd as the top/bottom key, since:
cmd-left moves to the start of a line
cmd-right moves to the end of a line
cmd-up moves to the top of the text
cmd-down moves to the bottom of the text

The option key is used with left/right to move by words. I have no
idea if control does anything, or if option with up/down does
anything... I should try that.

RE: there's an update to Mountain Lion available

2012-08-23 Thread Daniel Miller
Hi,

Just go to the apple menu, go to software update, which will open the app
store, and clock update all. Once the machine restarts, if you don't have
Voiceover set to turn on in the login window, press CMD+F5 to turn it on so
you can monitor the process of the update.
The update is only 24MB, so it shouldn't take that long to download and
install. Also, I also highly doubt there will be VoiceOver fixes in such a
short notice and small update.

Re: 1password accessibility

2012-08-23 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi Robert,

How do you go about the following with 1password. It's something I've been
struggling with the past few days but I can't get my head around it.

Say I have a site where I have a weak login password, and I want to change that
into a strong one, generated by 1password, and also stored for later use. I
safari over to the page where I can fill in a new password. Then, while on the
field to enter my new password, I need 1password to generate a password for me
and store that. How do you do this? Very interested to know, because it's
driving me crazy, knowing that it is possible with VoiceOver and I would love
to use this feature.

Paul.

On Aug 21, 2012, at 11:32 PM, Robert Carter nc5rn...@gmail.com wrote:

 Hi,

I use 1password on both the Mac and on windows.

After getting the safari extension installed, I simply press
command+backslash when I am on the login page for a site. 1password asks me
to enter my master password and it fills in the login information
 automatically.

This has worked well for me in both Lion and now Mountain Lion. I have heard
of others having difficulty with using the extension with VoiceOver.

 Hi all,

I now have 1password from the app store. If you have it and know how to use
its safari extension, please tell me a little bit about the way you handle
that part of 1password. I'm still fighting with the interface in the
 1password extension.

If you don't know what 1password is: it is a utility for the mac, iphone and
ipad. It solves the problem of having mostly the same password across a lot
of sites, it lets you automatically fill in the passwords you give it, and
it can even create new, strong passwords for you, and fill them in if you
need them. It's an awesome piece of software, but as far as I can tell, not
very accessible inside its safari extension that makes the above possible.
It even lets you sync your password from your mac, via dropbox, over to your
phone and ipad, so that you have your log in assistant everywhere. If
someone gets hold of your password file stored in dropbox, no worries,
because it's well encrypted. Any of you a good experience with 1password? On
their site, I found 1 person having asked for voiceover support, and they
say they hope they will, that's it. I would like to urge you to take a look,
and write them as well, asking for accessibility being built in. We all will
benefit, for 1password's capabilities are great. Just listen to the mac
power users podcast and you'll be convinced.

 Paul.

Re: there's an update to Mountain Lion available

2012-08-23 Thread Mark BurningHawk Baxter
I already did the update, just now. So far, I don't notice a difference,
except this new kitty takes HELLA long to reboot! And, I've noticed that the
list of screen-savers seems inaccessible, but that was before the update… Going
to repair permissions now, but so far no difference.

How to do it, and here come the bullets! (*bounce!*)
 • Press VO M to bring up the Apple menu. Down-arrow until you hear Software
update.
 • Press Enter, wait while the app store opens and does its thing.
 • VO around when it's done, and explore that screen until you're sure you
understand it, then press the Install all available updates button.
On the next screen, there's a software license agreement, obviously you
choose the I agree, button.
 • That's it, really. VO will speak all the way through the launch and
installation. Start-up and reboot as normal.
 • That's the last thing; No more bullets.
 • Really. I'm serious; that's all there is to it.
 • Have a great. day. •••

2012-08-23 Thread Mike Busboom
Hello everyone,

I was sorely tempted to chop off the last two words of the subject but wasn't
sure if I was allowed to do that since Im not a list moderator.

I went to the Applevis site and read all the posts about TextDetective. They
were very informative. I have two questions, however:

1. I have an iPhone 4S which has a front and rear camera. Which camera does
TextDetective require you to use?

2. Apparently, the program will only read material if it is right-side-up,
from the camera's perspective. Has this been addressed in the most recent
update?

My best to all of you, and thanks!

Re: Scanning program for the iPhone I felt

2012-08-23 Thread Chris Blouch
I don't know anything about text detective but the back camera is the
very high resolution one where the front is low res just for video chat.
So I suspect they want you to use the back camera. This would also be
much more convenient as you can have it aimed at something and still
have access to the UI on the screen.

it and paste it in the combo box and click post. Of course, this is a

like to hear what I am writing before posting. I can't believe that in

Is there a way to download selectively the items?

Thanks for any help on this subject.

No, you shouldn't see that unless you have signed into a different App Store
account, with a different ID, than the one from which you installed MOuntain

Mountain Lion install, and you then shouldn't see that error message.

OK, I know about using vo+command+left and right arrow then when on rate, I

It's moving in 5% increments. I kind of remember a while back, it's been

trick to actually adjust that in finer notches, where I literally could move
it just a percentage at a time.

Can someone refresh my noggin on how to do that? LOL!

Re: Speaking rate in Voiceover

2012-08-23 Thread Esther
Hi Chris,

It used to be that holding down the shift key as well would act as a modifier
to slow down the adjustment rate of various items such as volume, rate, etc.
This was a general Mac feature, not just for adjustments in the VO controls.
I'm not sure this works now with the plethora of shortcut key controls and
QuickNav, but somebody else may be able to tell you how to do this. It could
just be that my current setup conflicts with being able to do this, or maybe
you can still do this on a full size keyboard? It was certainly a feature in
older versions of the Mac OS X operating system. One of the gruesome details
of inadvertently pressing the Exposé key shortcuts back instead of the F key
combination you really wanted in Leopard was, that not only could you not tell
what was going on (e.g. visual windows moving for selection -- analogous to
using Window chooser menu but turning your screen into a kind of icon view of
windows) -- but if you happened to hold down the Shift key as well, this would
all happen in slow motion, and it would take even longer to recover response.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: 1password accessibility

2012-08-23 Thread Robert Carter
Hi Paul,

I don't know for sure but am going to assume that you currently have the weak
password stored in 1password. Making that assumption, here is how I would
proceed.

1. Open 1password go to file menu, down arrow to new item and press right
arrow to expand it.
2. Down arrow to new password and press enter to open the dialogue.
3. Use VO right arrow and you will see that 1password has generated a strong
password in this dialogue.
4. VO right arrow past the password and use VO space on the copy button to put
the password on the clipboard.
5. Open TextEdit and paste the password in to a blank document. I do this
because 1password only keeps the generated password on the clipboard for 90
seconds or whatever you have it set to.
6. Highlight the password that is now in text edit and copy it to the
clipboard. This way you don't have to worry about it disappearing from the
clipboard.
7. Open safari and go to the site where you want to change the password. Get to
the point on the site where you are being asked for the new password and paste
it in from the clipboard.
8. Go back to 1password, to your logins and locate the login information for
the site that you just changed the password for.
9. Interact with the scroll area in 1password and use VO right arrow to
navigate to the password field. Assuming that you have show passwords checked
in the view menu, you will see your old password for the site. Press command e
to allow you to edit this entry. Delete it and paste in the new password that
is still on the clipboard.
10. Press command e again to tell 1password that you are finished editing.

You now have the password changed on the site and also updated in 1password.
You can trash the text edit document and all is now right with the world.

 1password extension.

If you don't know what 1password is: it is a utility for the mac, iphone
and ipad. It solves the problem of having mostly the same password across a
lot of sites, it lets you automatically fill in the passwords you give it,
and it can even create new, strong passwords for you, and fill them in if
you need them. It's an awesome piece of software, but as far as I can tell,
not very accessible inside its safari extension that makes the above
possible. It even lets you sync your password from your mac, via dropbox,
over to your phone and ipad, so that you have your log in assistant
everywhere. If someone gets hold of your password file stored in dropbox,
no worries, because it's well encrypted. Any of you a good experience with
1password? On their site, I found 1 person having asked for voiceover
support, and they say they hope they will, that's it. I would like to urge
you to take a look, and write them as well, asking for accessibility being
built in. We all will benefit, for 1password's capabilities are great. Just
listen to the mac power users podcast and you'll be convinced.

Re: Best GPS app for iPhone

2012-08-23 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Harry,

The best GPS app for iPhone is a very subjective matter. It very much depends
whether you mind having a 3G connection while using it or not.

I like Navigon because its maps reside on the phone so it doesn't download
data. The version I have works all over Europe as long as I remember to
download the appropriate maps.

However, I also like Ariadne GPS as an add-on, because it keeps me updated as
to where I am, and alerts me to the favourites I've put in. It does need an
internet connection, however, so I can't use it outside my home country without
incurring huge charges!

These two apps work together since Navigon happily runs in the background.

Quite a number of people use these two apps together, but I'm sure others will
have different suggestions since there are several GPS apps that only work in
the US.

Cheers,

Anne

Hi Chris,

It used to be that holding down the shift key as well would act as a
modifier to slow down the adjustment rate of various items such as volume,
rate, etc. This was a general Mac feature, not just for adjustments in the
VO controls. I'm not sure this works now with the plethora of shortcut key
controls and QuickNav, but somebody else may be able to tell you how to do
this. It could just be that my current setup conflicts with being able to
do this, or maybe you can still do this on a full size keyboard? It was
certainly a feature in older versions of the Mac OS X operating system. One
of the gruesome details of inadvertently pressing the Exposé key shortcuts
back instead of the F key combination you really wanted in Leopard was, that
not only could you not tell what was going on (e.g. visual windows moving
for selection -- analogous to using Window chooser menu but turning your
screen into a kind of icon view of windows) -- but if you happened to hold
down the Shift key as well, this would all happen in slow motion, and it
would take even longer to recover response.

Hi,

I would navigate by character to the url itself then press VO space. If that
fails you, do the same but instead of pressing VO space, press VO shift M to
bring up the context menu and select to open link or something like that.

Re: dumb mail question

That's what I do. You don't have to go by character though, just by
line or whatever until you get close, then by word until the vo cursor
is focused somewhere on the link text. Vo-shift-m, open url, enter,
and there you go.

You're right. It'd be up to Microsoft to make windows installs accessible,
since that progress bar is only for installing the mac side of bootcamp.
Unfortunately, Windows 8 will be the only version of windows for the first
time ever that's accessible during install.

I would doubt it. Installing windows really has nothing to do with the
bootcamp set up at that point. It would be up to MS to make the
installation of windows accessible.

Of course, as a parson who uses bootcamp, I hope I'm wrong. lol.

Re: 1password accessibility

2012-08-23 Thread Emilio
Paul,

Dr. Carter's suggestion is wonderful and great for assurance and
consistency.
The way I accomplish this is by eliminating steps 5 6.
I accomplish this one of two ways.
1. I use the original password with the site, then go and change the
password like Robert has indicated. I first, navigate to the change
password area where the new password will be inserted. Then with my
new password already generated, I just copy paste the 1password and
verify and close.
2. Well, I just forgot. Probably too cumbersome anyway. Lol.

Just another way of how to accomplish the same task.

Radio Apps?

2012-08-23 Thread Christopher-Mark gilland
A friend of mine and I both are wonderring: are there any apps for the mac,
***NOT!*** for I O S, that work kind of like the Windows version of Tap-in
Radio, or Screamer Radio, etc? I know there's ITunes Radio, but he wants
more something that will let us search by genre, region/location, etc. OK,
one could! obviously argue why not just go to tunein.com, or iheartradio.com
or whatever, but a lot a those embedded players don't give you much control
like inlined volume control, seeing the currently playing song, etc. Also,
it would be cool if we could get a feature to even record the stream in
realtime. I know that you could do this in conjunction with Audio Hijack
Pro, and even could use its scheduler, but still I'd like something similar
that would do this all in one. Again the recording would be an added bonus,
but at least! something that would let us search by region or location
and/or genre. Plus, I want something that focuses more on actual A.M/F.M
stations more so than on just different internet only based stations.

Re: a new little thing about Mountain Lion

2012-08-23 Thread Joseph Norton
Well, I have to say Windows 8 prerelease is not accessible on the first screens
of the installation under bootcamp.

VMWare Fusion 5 allows you to do an easy install, even with the iso images from
MS. After the easy install, I was able to use Windows U to bring up the Ease
of Access center and get Narrator started.

I am going to try to get some sighted assistance to see if I can install
Windows 8 prerelease under Bootcamp, and, I will report on at what point, if
any, I was able to get Narrator to come up talking. It all depends on when
Windows starts sound support, and, if they recognize my Mac Mini's sound
hardware.

ML .1, first look.

2012-08-23 Thread Veronica Elsea
Hi everyone!
Okay, I too was surprised by how my update went. I expected more of a download
event. grin. In any case, it was easy and I do in fact now have 10.8.1 on my

unfortunately. It still comes up on the tool bar and doesn't seem to
automatically interact with html content like Lion did. Hmmm. If there isn't
some little thing I'm doing wrong, bummer! I so want Safari to be smooth and
sensible again. grin

Ensuring Mail IS NOT Deleted under Lion

2012-08-23 Thread Jane
Is there a way to keep mail in your inbox and make sure you *cannot* delete it?
I'e managed to accidentally delete an important email twice. I've been able
to recover it from the trash, but I need to make sure it's not deleted again.
If this is possible, how do I do it?

using terminal?

2012-08-23 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
One thing I can't do is use terminal. I can cd, because vo reads the
new prompt which is your location, but that's it. For instance, if I
launch a py script, I get nothing about any errors or anything read
automatically. Worse, I can't scroll up to see my commands and the
system's responses. This is one thing windows does well; the shell is
simple and easy to look through. I am really, really hoping it's just
a setting or something I don't know about, but right now terminal
looks pretty unuseable. Any ideas would be wonderful. Thanks.

Re: using terminal?

2012-08-23 Thread Henry D. Hollithron
Good Day:

I used Terminal successfully for an entire college semester, since I
had to remotely run programs on the Computer Science servers through SSH and
transfer files through SFTP. Two rather obvious things occur to me:

1. Are you interacting with the Shell element, which contains the text of your
session?

2. Note that you cannot use the arrow keys by themselves to read the screen.
You must use the VO-arrow keys to read the terminal output, which does indeed
include previous commands.

Again, I am having no problems with the terminal, and, much to my relief, I
don't even have to worry about scroll bars.

Unfortunately, Windows 8 will be the only version of windows for the first

2012-08-23 Thread Christopher-Mark gilland
I! Whole heartedly! agree. Oh, in Snowleopard it! sucked! in ML it seems to
be the same. Lion is the only! version I've found that it worked
gorgeously! in! In Lion, I literally just had to type a command, hit enter,
then could vo+up arrow through the window to see the output. Doesn't seem
to wanna do that. NOw I get this stupid split window thing, and a few other
things, but it seems to jump all over the place when I try anything halfway
productive.

Hi all,
One thing I can't do is use terminal. I can cd, because vo reads the
new prompt which is your location, but that's it. For instance, if I
launch a py script, I get nothing about any errors or anything read
automatically. Worse, I can't scroll up to see my commands and the
system's responses. This is one thing windows does well; the shell is
simple and easy to look through. I am really, really hoping it's just
a setting or something I don't know about, but right now terminal
looks pretty unuseable. Any ideas would be wonderful. Thanks.

Hi
Yes there's Karen and Lee, and they are free.
Go into VO utility and choose the voice row of the table there. Look around

Karen premium is what I use. You need to download her but she is worth the

2012-08-23 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Ricardo, et al,

As a man who just finished installing Windows 8 Enterprise 32-bit, let me
assure you that Microsoft has lived up to its reputation of failing the
blind and low vision.

Even after all the versions of Windows that have come before, it is still
not possible to have voice guided assistance during the installation of
Windows 8 from a fresh ISO image or DVD.

What's even worse, Narrator continues to be slow, sluggish, and
inconsistent.

In short, as far as I am concerned, Windows 8 is a huge disappointment in
terms of screen reader accessibility.

Sadly,

Okay, Alex and Chris!
Maybe we can figure out what I do differently than you do. I hope so
because I really want this to work. grin
So I'll give you one example. I open Safari and it lands on the tool

then just sat there. When I interacted with the html content, it then
started saying, home, contact us, etc. Never mind that I have my
settings such that I'd like it to announce some information about the
page when it loads. Once in that page, I then used command-L to go to
another page to see if it behaves differently. I went to www.acb.org and
saw exactly the same behavior.

I'd love to hear what you guys do that is different. Thanks so much.

Re: ML .1, first look.

2012-08-23 Thread Christopher-Mark gilland

OK, first of all:

When you first open Safari, you then immediately typed the U R L to a web
site. There's part of your issue.

You need to first always always always! hit command+L first to focus
yourself to the address bar. Then! type the address and hit return.

Second off, do you have Voiceover set to automatically interact with html
areas?

Let's take a quick look. Go into your voiceover utility with vo+F8.
Remember you may need to do fn+vo+F8, depending on your setup.

Vo+right arrow over to the categories table and then hit the letter W.
Don't worry, you don't even need to interact first. As long as you're
actually on the table itself, you should be then able to hit W to jump to
the web category.

OK, vo+right arrow two times, and you should hear page loading tab. If it
isn't already selected, go head and hit vo+space on it to do so.

OK, now vo+right arrow 4 times. You should hear a checkbox to move the
voiceover cursor when loaded. You need to be absolutely certain that this
box is indeed checked. If it's not, hit vo+space to check it.

OK, that should help but don't close the Vo Utility just quite yet. I wanna
lookat one more thing, just? in case.

go back up to the top of the window, and go to the categories table. I'm
gonna assume that from this point forward you are using either Lion, or
Mountain Lion. If you're on anything earlier, I E, Snow Leopard, Leopard,
or Tiger, God forbid!... then you're not gonna have this option, so in that
case, just hit command+W. You're done, otherwise though keep on following my
directions.

In the category list, again, make sure you're focused on it. You again do
not need to interact, just be sure you're on it first. Then, hit the letter
A, as in activities.

Once here vo+right arrow until you get to the activities table. Again, no
need to interact here. Just down arrow and if anything is in that table,
see if you have an activity for Safari. If not, then you're good to go.
Just hit command+W. If you do however, then read on.

So, if you're still reading, then that tells me, you actually did have a
Safari activity. Otherwise I'm expecting you read no further.

So, make sure Safari is selected in the table.

Vo+right arrow 12 times. You should get to a check box that says Web. Is
it checked? If not, then you're good to go. Just hit command+W. If it is!
checked however, then keep reading.

If checked then there should be a set button just to the right of the
checkbox. Vo+Space on it.

Now again, locate the page loading tab and select it, then make sure the box
to automatically move the Voiceover cursor is checked. Then go down to the
very bottom of the screen, and vo+Space on the OK button. Then, finally
command+W to close the Voiceover Utility.

Now, If Safari was running, command+Tab to it, if needed, then hit command+Q
to quit it. Now, reopen it. I know that sounds a little silly. Why quit
it then reopen it, but trust me. You're right, it's probably not necessary
to do, but I wanna cover all of our grounds just in case.

OK, now hold it! Don't do anything! Don't start typing a U R L. First,
hit command+L.

Now, and only! now, type in your
hairyfox.com

Then hit return.

Wait a sec, and let the page load.

Now! vo around, and see what you get.

Did that work?

Another thing, too, you may want to do, is, In Safari itself, hit
command+Comma, to bring up the preferences, then find your toolbar and
interact with it. Vo+Space on general, then stop interacting with the
toolbar. OK, in here, we want to look for new tabs open with, and there
should be a pop up menu. Make sure that is not set to blank or untitled or
what not. You want that on home page. Then vo+right a few times and you
should hear home page then again takes you to a text box. In here, just
type something like: google.com

This way, every time a new tab opens it doesn't just take you to a blank nul
page. In theory, having a blank page really shouldn't effect anything. I'm
not saying that it messes things up having it that way, as actually, it
doesn't, but who knows. Again, I'm only trying to rule out every
possibility I can think of.

OK so once this all's done, let's again hit command+W to close the
preferences, then hit command+Q to quit Safari.

OK, now again, reopen it, and see if it landed you in the html area
automatically for your home page, which is google in the above example.

If that doesn't work, I do have another idea we can try, although it's a bit
overkill most likely, so I'd rather not go that route until I first know if
this fixed things, as I'll bet my money on it, that if you set it all up the
way I just talked you through doing, it should! ok, key word, should! work.

Give me a little more info: what version of OSX are you running? What type
Mac is this you're using?

ML .1 changed Mail again.

2012-08-23 Thread Veronica Elsea

Okay, I'm going to go gray before this Macbook is done with me! shriek!
After playing with Safari, I just thought I'd restart and see what
happens. Then I thought I'd check my mail. Two things. Did anyone else
notice that the first time you go into Safari and the first time you
opened mail in 10.8.1, you heard that sound you get when sending mail or
opening up Mission control?
Anyway, after that, I went into Mail and boy does it look weird. I know
we've had zillions of discussions about preview panes and all of that
but I haven't see it look like this before. When mail opens, I'm usually
set to classic view, which I still am. I have preview pane gone. Usually
I come up in the messages table where I can up and down arrow through
messages. It comes in and says messages table, inbox, 135 of 136. Okay,
I'm sitting on message number 136. If I up arrow, I hear, horrizontal
splitter. If I down arrow, I hear horrizontal splitter. If I Vo-left
arrow to the mailboxes table, I can hear the current mailbox but none of
the rest of them. I can interact with the table, but then I can't easily
get to the list of messages where I used to be able to up and down arrow
without interacting, getting to hear all of the column information at
once. Does this mean that the preview pane is back? Guess I'm going to
have to keep those instructions set right by the computer if every time
the operating system gets a snack, preview is back. Sheesh!
Now let's see if I can hunt those instructions down. Good grief! Thanks
for any help.

Awe, how coot! Look at the perty little Apple. Not?

2012-08-23 Thread Christopher-Mark gilland
OK, so you're probably looking at my subject line going, what the... heck?
Hear me out. Yes I was kind a kidding in the subject, but this actually is
a true legitimate question, I swear. LOL!

So, I can't speak for the macbook airs, nor for the macbook pros of any
flavor, but I know at least that on the white polly-carbon standard
macbooks, if you look on the back of the screen, pretty much about in the
dead smack center, you're gonna feel ingraved cut into the plastic, a very
tactal outline of an apple. I know, you're probably going, yeah? so?
Here's the catch. I dono if yall knew this, but, I have a bit more vision
than just light preception. I can't read the screen, not even close, but I
can see shape, color, light, and sometimes depending on the setting, even
some very noticeable facial expressions, so I'd say my vision loss is pretty
significant, yes, but nowhere near total, thank God. With this said, I dono
if yall knew this, but as long as the macbook's screen is up... opened
rather, and as long as the system is on, who cares if you're booted or if
you have a crashed paper weight, God forbid, bottom line is, as long as it's
opened and the unit is powered on, that apple actually lights up. No, I'm
seriously not? kidding! Ask a sighted person if ya don't believe me. And
believe me, it's pretty much as bright as the screen would be at 100%.

Even hitting fn+F1 (as my keys are set to software by default, not
hardware...), to dim the screen, that doesn't decrease the brightness of the
l e d in that apple. So aside taking a drum set stick and going kurbango,
Sm'm'mash! w'w'wack, on the thing... ok, I'm kidding, LOL! Seriously
though... is there a way less distructively, LOL! to somehow use a 3rd party
app, or maybe something to modify the efi and allow me to have that stupid
thing that does us blinks no good aside draining our batteries quicker, not
light up at all?

Honestly, it's driving me crazy!

Chris.

2012-08-23 Thread Veronica Elsea

Hi Chris!
First, thanks for such a nice exact description. And in case anyone else
is following along, here's what solved it. I am using Mountain Lion,
latest update. My voiceOver cursor was in fact set correctly in the VO
utility. Here's what did make it work. Yes Chris, it was the set new tab
function in Safari. Who'd have thunk it! I just figured that things
would load faster if every new window didn't have to go to a page. Wow!
But in fact when I did set it to go to my home page, bingo! Safari began
interacting automatically. Boy this list sure earned its place in my
book! Thanks so much. It would have been quite awhile before I got
around to making that connection.
And I had in the past created an activity to automatically turn on Quick
Nav when I went into Safari, but kicked it out when I was trying to
figure out why VoiceOver thought I had extra apps running. Maybe I can
relax and put that back now.

Anyway, thanks again. Really really appreciated from here.

Let's take a quick look. Go into your voiceover utility with vo+F8.
Remember you may need to do fn+vo+F8, depending on your setup.

Vo+right arrow over to the categories table and then hit the letter W.
Don't worry, you don't even need to interact first. As long as you're

I'm gonna assume that from this point forward you are using either Lion,

box to automatically move the Voiceover cursor is checked. Then go down
to the very bottom of the screen, and vo+Space on the OK button. Then,
finally command+W to close the Voiceover Utility.

Now, If Safari was running, command+Tab to it, if needed, then hit

I missed some of this thread, so if I am misunderstanding the issue, I
apologize or if this has been suggested before. Did you hide the tab bar as
well? Also, I've had a lot more success having pages open in new windows and

That's why I leave new tabs set to blank. If I don't, then I get an
html area loaded when I hit cmd-t or cmd-l and I focus on that instead
of my edit box. Setting that preference to blank lets vo focus on, and
remain on, the url field like it should. Who knows, maybe you can set
it back to blank now and things will start working again? I'm grasping

2012-08-23 Thread Christopher-Mark gilland
Did you first type in an address then hit return after typing in the
address?

Before you hit command l did it take you to the html area?

Do you know how to run a disk permissions and a disk verify/repair in disk
utility? It honestly really might be worth trying as a very last resort.

The only thing I am seeing that it seems a bit odd to me on is, why're you
wanting to hit command+L then immediately try navigating? All command l
does it takes you to the address bar. so, if you hit command+L, then before
you'll be in the html content automatically, you need to first after hitting
command+l type a web address, then hit return. If you just hit command+L
then try moving without doing anything else first, then no, it's not! gonna
take you to the html area automatically. Sorry, maybe I'm just slightly
confused on exactly what your'e doing and how your command+L is connecting
with this issue.

As I said, if nothing else, might be worth running a disk permission
verify/repair. I doubt that would have much baring, but it's probably what
my next step would be.

Here's something actually else to consider. Did you upgrade from a previous
O S to ML, or did you do a clean install? If the former, then did you have
this Safari activity for your quick nav set up in the previous O S before
you upgraded? If so, then what might a happened is you may have part of the
activity configuration from the previous OS lingerring around in addition to
parts from ML, which of corse would make things conflict. If that's the
case, I'm gonna suggest you try removing the activity entirely, then try to
recreate it from scratch.

Then! see if it works as expected, and actually, if you'd not done so
already, I'd even go as far as to remove the activity, then even before!
recreating it, see what it does if you then! with no activity intact, try
it.

This is, I agree, a bit perplexing. I'll do what I can, but short of that
and running a disk permissions verify/repair, I'm sorry. I'm outta options
striking out.

believe me, it's pretty much as bright as the screen would be at 100%.

Even hitting fn+F1 (as my keys are set to software by default, not

Really frustrated with Mail! For real this time!

2012-08-23 Thread Veronica Elsea

Hi everyone!
I can't believe this issue is back. I'm so not happy right now. When I
first got this Macbook air, I was using pop mail. I had a ton of trouble
sending mail. It would come up and tell me it couldn't use the current
sender. Everything pointed to a bug in apple mail that they said they
couldn't duplicate consistantly enough to fix. The fix was to change to
imap. So I put the macbook awy till I learned about imap and made the
switch. It worked great for awhile. And now tonight, it's back to not
being able to send again. I actually had to save my last message in
drafts and go to my windows computer in order to send it. I know it's
not a problem with my provider or my settings because I went through
this way too many times. How can I count on this thing for email use
when I'm traveling if this old buggaboo is back? It makes me very sad in
a way. Is anyone else here having this experience. Thanks a bunch.

I used Terminal successfully for an entire college semester, since I had to
remotely run programs on the Computer Science servers through SSH and
transfer files through SFTP. Two rather obvious things occur to me:

 1. Are you interacting with the Shell element, which contains the text of
 your session?

 2. Note that you cannot use the arrow keys by themselves to read the screen.
You must use the VO-arrow keys to read the terminal output, which does
 indeed include previous commands.

Again, I am having no problems with the terminal, and, much to my relief, I
