The MacBook Air does have fans. The fans run occasionally. The holes for the fan are concealed behind the hinge. At the least, they are identical in terms of VO keystrokes, so hook a keyboard to the iPod and see what you think. I believe you said you have an iPod - if not, ignore me. smile No, command-tab won't work, but go-h is your home button; press h twice while holding down the vo keys and you are in the App Switcher. It is kind of similar to the Application Chooser on the Mac. Certainly it is far less convenient, but the option is there. I like having a full computer for apps the iOS platform can't run (Xcode, some nice Youtube apps, etc) but those aren't a concern for you. However, someone mentioned external drives, and that's a great point. Also, iOS lacks commanders, so no assigning frequently used actions or even ApleScripts to gestures or keystrokes. Overall, because of the shortcut key support in apps Not necessarily in VO) I find the Mac or a Windows machine more efficient to use. That's just me though. Finally, the new Macbook Airs, and even the Pros from the brief times I've felt them, have very little in the way of vents or other holes. They use solid state drives, so have no moving internal parts except for some amazingly quiet fans you really can't access (the Airs seem to have no fans, but I could be wrong). Debris, then, is really not as much of a concern, and of course they make a myriad of cases for all these devices. Yes, this is my experience. The touchscreen feedback has caused me to become rather quicker on webpages and such. A friend is a teacher for the visually impaired. She has a few ten through twelve y/o blind kids who are unbelievably quick with the iPad. One of them is faster than any blind person either of us has observed on a computer. It appears to me that it isn't necessary to actually have anything in the external drive to make the pane appear but I don't know whether or not having a cd or dvd in the drive changes the options in the pane; I would think it doesn't. Of course, if you still hav a computer with a built-in drive, the pane will be there also. So set your preferences in this pane and then make sure in finder preferences you have the box checked for cds and dvds to show in finder and I think this should meet your need. Voice Over and Keynote accessibility?
Hello All, I have held back on purchasing a Mac book because most of my work is in giving lectures, workshops and presentations. I use Power Point on my laptop with JAWS to get the work done. When considering a Mac book I would need to have this ability. Last year when I contacted Apple accessibility I was informed that Keynote is not accessible with Voice Over as that this file is an image file rather than a text based file. I understand that I can add a windows simulation , plus Office, plus JAWS but frankly feel that this is rather ridiculous for purposes of running one productivity application. Has there been any improvement in accessibility to Keynote? I have recent posts on other list serves that claim all Apple productivity software is accessible with Voice Over, although I have heard the contrary from Apple last year. Thank you for taking the time to respond, if members of this list have used Keynote successfully to create and read presentations, please send along any reference links or guides. Saving word docs in Apple's Pages as default
Hello everyone, For those who use the new Pages, I was wondering is there a way by default, to have the app save documents in word format. Currently, I have been messing around with the export function in the file menu, saving as a word doc and reopening the document, making some changes with it and finally hitting Command S to save again. However, once I've issued this command it brings up another dialog box as if it wants me to save as a new file again. I can understand how this would be useful if one was making drafts of a document but I don't want to do this. All I am wanting to do is to just overwrite the original file with the new changes. So the question is, how do you use the revamped pages app to work with word documents if you know that most people may use Windows and Microsoft Word as the norm for word processing with computers. It use to be that I'd use a free app called Bean on the Mac save a document once as a word doc and just keep issuing command S now and then to save this one file. I'm sort of having trouble grasping how this is done effectively in Pages. So any input from anyone who uses Pages would be grate to know how you use it with saving as word documents. Many thanks Daniel -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Tim Kilburn Fort McMurray, AB Canada On Jun 19, 2014, at 7:16 AM, Daniel McGee danielmcgee...@googlemail.com wrote: Hello everyone, For those who use the new Pages, I was wondering is there a way by default, to have the app save documents in word format. I usually call in as well. I don't normally use the email feature because when I do, they almost never answer me. If they do, it's a very rare and takes one to two days to get a response. That is great timing. But you can't always wait. What did you say specifically to get them to respond to you? I am just curious, maybe I am not saying enough. Maybe I am not being specific enough. Re: probably a stupiddquestion
Hi, As previously mentioned, you can change the name of the computer from within the Sharing pane of System Preferences, but this only changes the name of the computer and does not affect user accounts in any way. You can also change the Display name of the user account, but cannot change the Short name. To clarify, the Display name is the name that shows up at the Login screen whereas the Short Name is the account name within the Directory Service and is the name assigned to the user's home folder. So, if all you want is for the user to have their own name displayed at the Login screen and don't mind that the Home folder will have a different name, then this is entirely possible. You just go into System Prefs, in the Users Groups pane, click the Lock to unlock the pref, then modify the Display name Edit field. This should not be confusing to the end-user. If you want everything to be changed over, you will need to create a new user account. this is common across most directory services including Windows Active Directory, Chrome OS and Macintosh Open Directory account structures. Re: Kudos to Apple Accessibility
Hi there When I extended my Apple Care when I got my Mac, I never dreamed I would call that 877-204-3930 number as much as I have. After all, I am an experienced computer user, so I just got it for disasters like a hard drive frying itself or something. The thing is, we just have accessibility problems with all computers, whether Windows or Apple's because sighted people are always ahead of us. It's just the way it is although I think it's getting better on the whole. When I had a Windows computer, my husband got to figure out my computer when things wouldn't talk or whatever. I'd rather call that above mentioned number any day than call upon family or friends to straighten out my computer. One's family and friends get awfully tired of doing this, and I will gladly pay Apple when my Apple Care runs out for fixing problems. Email contact has worked ok for me when I only want to report something. I never use email contact with accessibility when I have a problem that I need help with, like when I erased two hours of work, for instance, or the time I broke my Time Machine drive. But if I want to turn in something like losing speech on the tutorial (I was helping a friend with that), then email contact works ok. By the way, I got an answer on that twice in one day very quickly. Regards, Gigi On Jun 19, 2014, at 9:11 AM, Jessica D jldai...@gmail.com wrote: I usually call in as well. Even if the radio button appears checked for your selected networking method, press it again and authenticate. Sometimes it happens that the VMWare networking driver gets out of sync with the configuration of your virtual machine. This will especially be true for bridged networking. Re: How to remove write-protection from my USB-stick or flash-drive, whatever they call them these days
Are you sure it's Fat32? It might be NTFS which means your Mac can read it but not write it. If there is nothing on there I'd start by formatting it as Fat32. Delete tv shows from iTunes library
Hi guys, I'm wondering how I can delete tv shows that I have watched from my library so that my hard drive does not fill up too fast. I download everything from my Tivo on to my mac and I would like to figure out a way to clean out all the items that I have watched. I found a section in the program that tells you what shows you have not watched yet, but I have been unable to figure out a way to have the list of watched shows so that I could figure out how to delete them. Re: Delete tv shows from iTunes library
Hi, If these are TV shows that you have purchased through the iTunes Store, then navigate to the item you wish to delete, then press the Delete key on your keyboard. You will be given a confirmation notice. Make sure that the Also Delete from iCloud is not checked. This will remove it from your computer but still allow you to either re-download it at a later time or stream it to watch it whenever you have an Internet connection. If these were not purchased from iTunes, then you can use the same process except you won't be prompted to delete from iCloud as well, they will just be removed. Also, make sure to empty your Trash, otherwise, you will have no space savings at all. Later... Re: Accessing iCloud Web Mail on iOS?
You can change signatures on iCloud.com, but that is only going to affect mail sent from that website, not your other devices. Unfortunately, I don't think iOS devices can fully access iCloud.com; Apple wants them to use the mobile apps instead. This may have changed, but last I checked, that is how it worked. Introduction From New List Member
Hello. I have just been approved as a new member on this list and wanted to write a quick intro message. I'm an assistive technology specialist and I've been in the field for over 20 years. I am a long-time user of windows and, a few years ago, my employer purchased an iMac for our classroom. I'll admit that, for a couple of years, I truly hated using the Mac, which I think was more due to my 20-year windows bias. After listening to a lot of tutorials and rummaging through a lot of Web sites, I've gotten to the point where I absolutely love using the Mac and would be quite pleased if I could get one for my next computer. I'm on this list to ask questions as they arise and I also just want to do a lot of reading and try and catch up on gaps in my knowledge which I need to fill. I'll tell you that even when I despised the Mac I clearly saw its benefits and I probably could have given a talk to 100 people and might have been able to convince most of them to at least consider switching from Windows to the Mac, even while I was going through my own love-hate relationship with it. I think that my recent purchase of an iPhone also helped me to warm up to Apple and I'm particularly excited at the integration we're going to see between iOS and Yosemite this fall. thanks for being there and I'm glad this list is available. -- David Goldfield, Founder and Peer Coordinator, Philadelphia Computer Users' Group for the Blind and Visually Impaired Feel free to visit my new Web site http://www.davidgoldfield.info/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: Introduction From New List Member
Hi, David, Welcome to the list. I did a double-take, because I just realized you've posted to another list I'm on, and thought you were already a member of this one for a while. In any case, my confusion is cleared up. I switched to the Mac in 2010 and just jumped right in. I wasn't doing Assistive Tech work anymore, so I was able to do the full immerssion bit. I've used my husband's Windows computer a few times, but basically, it's been all Apple for me. If my computer decides it's toast and doesn't just simply need a hard-drive replacemen, I may be going to mobile devices for good. I'll think about it. Anyhow, welcome and look forward to hearing from you. Re: Probably a Basic Question About Browsing folders in the Finder
Hi, David, The finder has three basic views: list view, column view, and icon browser. List view and column view are the most accessible. The list view has a table with fairly detailed information about each file. You can expand the folders from the table or use option-down-arrow to go into the focused folder and remain there while manipulating files. Column view is kind of like a tree view in Windows. Icon view is, I think, a grid that shows icons for your folders and files. So the table is for your list view, and the browser is either for column view or icon view. To get to these views on the fly, there are keyboard shortcuts: command-1 for icon view, command-2 for listview, and command-3 for column view. You can adjust a folders default view or the default view for all folders with command-J. I hope this helps. That is, there should be listed something like 32 GB blah blah and one named whatever the stick is called. You need to select the 32 GB blah blah thing, then attempt the erase disk. If that still gives you grief, select the same item, then go to the Partition tab, in the Current pop-up menu, choose one partition, choose FAT32 for the format option, then press the Apply and confirm your choice. You may need to also set the partition map scheme to Master Boot Record in the Options button but this may be done automatically when you choose FAT32, I can't recall. HTH. Later... Re: itunes on mac os10 is no longer adding songs or albums to play lists please help!!! kind regards trahern.
Some questions for you. 1. When you go to select the album to add, are you choosing in the scrole box to add only selected albums and play lists to your iPad? 2. Now, when you interact with the scrole area, are you making sure the album you want to add is checked? I'd suggest that if you want to make a playlist out of an album, you need to locate that album on the grid, then, interact with the album details. Then, move to the track grid on the right. Interact with it and then use cmd+a to select all tracks in the grid. Opening the file menu should bring up the make new playlist from selected tracks option. Re: Probably a Basic Question About Browsing folders in the Finder
Teresa and Mike, Thank you for your explanations. Re: Introduction From New List Member
Mike, I'm honored that you remember that tutorial, which I recorded in 1993, by the way. I agree with your comments re: Mac advantages over Windows. On the PC, when my Web browser hangs, it often hangs up my screen reader which is NVDA, a screen reader which rarely crashes. The one time Safari actually got hung up, the Mac had no negative effects, whatsoever. Voiceover and my other running apps just worked as though nothing was happening. Quite impressive. adding album tracks to play lists
To the individual who was having issues adding all the tracks of a particular album to a playlist, I think I have found and solved the problem. The issue seems to be the way the album itself is selected before tracks can be added from it to any playlist or else a new playolist. Try this sequence of steps. 1. Focus on the album grid. 2. Now, using only the arrow keys, move from album to album until you find the wanted album. You can use first letter navigation here. 3. Now, you want to interact with the album details. 4. At this point, you want to VO+right arrow until you hit the grid with the album tracks. Interact with this grid. 5. Now, you want to use command+a to select all the tracks here. 6. Now, you want to open the short cut menu. From inside this menu, you should find the new playlist from selections. Select this and name the list. Now, in the window for your IPad, you want to be sure that in the music scrole area, you only synch the selected albums or play lists which are checked. Interact with this area and navigate to the play list section. Here, check only the lists you want to synch. Make sure the ones you do not want are not synched. You might want to do the same with the album table at the very right hand side. Now, having done this, you want to synch your device. HTH.
