That system is fairly new. If you can upgrade memory or drive you should get
another 2 or 3 years out of it. I think the only networking he really that
upgraded is Bluetooth 4.2 in the new systems.

Hi fellow list members,

Seeking your advice.

My 2013 late MacBook Pro is getting rather long in the tooth and I am
looking at upgrading.

The question is do I purchase a new Mac or heaven forbid get a PC?

I don't mind Windows 10 but I would need to resurrect JAWS license or
perhaps use NVDA.

Would be using the new computer for office related tasks and XL.

As always your help is appreciated.

This is great information.

Thank you for sharing it.

I'll definitely be keeping a lookout for it as I have absolutely no intention
of upgrading any of my Windows 7 PCs to Windows 10.

I am a strong believer in the old adage of "if it ain't broken, don't fix it."

I didn't actually get upgraded. I got annoyed when Windows Update appeared
to be stuck with this. So googled it.

First, Microsoft sneaked it in a couple months ago as an optional item with
the name Update for Windows 7 and a kb number. This installs the gwx aoolet
which waits for you to press that button on the update page. Until you do, you
cannot check for other updates.

Here is a link to what I found today about what is expected next year.

Maybe by that time I will wean myself off Windows completely and uninstall
Bootcamp.

Hi Sadam,

What are the specifications of your late 2013 Macbook Pro? Like others have
said it’s quite new, and the 2014 and 2015 Macbook Pro models are relatively
similar. Have you tried reinstalling OS X from scratch? Or are there tasks you
are trying to do which you feel may be faster on a PC? Have you considered Boot

Re: New laptop.

2015-11-01 Thread Cameron Strife
Hi. Given the amount of ram, processor speed, and the ssd, you should
be having no issues even with intensive multi tasking.

Have you ran any diagnostic utilities? If so, has anything come up?

I did have a stock mac book pro with an ssd develop an issue and it
turned out to be the ssd although it's rare that they have issues. The
apple store I had it repaired through said they never see issues with
their ssds. I guess I was the unlucky one!

An upgrade would absolutely void the warranty, yes. But, if you're replacing it
anyway, why not? That said, it sounds like your problem is more the apps on the
Mac, and that you prefer Windows anyway. Why not get a cheap Windows box for
work, and keep the Mac for home use, assuming you prefer it for everything

Re: New laptop.

2015-11-01 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I'd love to do more with Pages, but I'd need Ann's training. Last I
remember looking, it was over $100, which though I find that a fair price,
right now, I simply just cannot afford it. I'd be willing to pay in
installments, but I highly doubt that would be possible.

Ann, if you're reading this, let me know, and maybe we could work something
out. I'd need quite a bit of help though, as aside jotting down a small
little text file, doing the more high end word processing is not something I
am very familiar with. I'm quite good at teaching myself things, but I'm
just not totally sure how far I'd get with it on my own.

Hi Alex,

Thanks for writing in.

I mainly need the new machine for Office work.

Haven't quite gotten my head around Pages for the Mac yet.

I got quite excited when Office for Mac became accessible but honestly
it's been a big disappointment ever since.

If I need to do any serious editing for documents I fire up Windows
through BootCamp.

This machine uses flash memory but an upgrade at home might void the
warranty.

Your call. I assume you are familiar with both, given that you've had a Mac
for two years but still know Windows. Macs are more expensive, but, well,
they're Macs, with all the advantages that includes. Do you have specific
questions about one platform or the other which you aren't sure about but
would help your decision?

As Jonathan said, too, a 2013 machine is pretty new. I'm on a 2012 Air, and
about to bring my 2011 Mini back to life, and both work fine. If you have a
mechanical drive in that Mac, that might explain a lot. Consider buying a
solid state drive upgrade for your existing machine, instead of a whole new
laptop. It's harder to replace hard drives in newer Macs, but it can be done
with the right tools and parts.

Re: New laptop.

2015-11-01 Thread Sadam Ahmed
The CPU is 2.5 GHz 512GB Flash storage and 8GB of RAM.

Back when I picked it up I was doing some podcast work and wanted a fairly
powerful machine.

I just want the new PC to do complex office documents and number crunching for
work purposes.

I do currently use Boot Camp and NVDA in the office.

I had a play around with pages and was actually pleasantly surprised that I'm
now able to access track changes and other formatting information.

Learning that maybe an option.

This computer did cost me $2300 so replacing it would be an absolute last
resort.

Re: New laptop.

2015-11-01 Thread Sadam Ahmed

This machine uses flash memory but an upgrade at home might void the
warranty.

Huh! Weird. I'm not doubting you for even one second, but are you sure
that you have the most up to date version? What version, speaking of which,
are you running of I O S, and finally, what device are you running the KNFB
Reader on, if you don't mind me asking?

Not for me, no problems here. Just go to Settings and change the rate to
your desire.

Mine has been set to 40 percent and stays that way.
Maybe the trick is to change it before start scanning.

Hello,

I, too, am experiencing this problem.

The thing is, I don't see how to set a new default speech rate. If such a
mechanism exists, then we'd be in business.

Was it possible to set a new speech rate previously?

It's actually 20% and it seems to reset itself each time. I'm calling this

I just opened up the KNFB Reader app on my IPhone 6S, and went to scan a

Iphone to about 10% speaking rate... there you pretty much have it.

How in the world do I adjust this?

Hi Cameron,

Any particular mackie Onyx mixer you recommend?

I got a whole heap of results on eBay ranging from $3500 to one that would fit
my budget at $849.

Keep in mind it's going to be pod casting to my WordPress.com website.

Hi Jonathan,

I forgot to mention it's the Retina display model.

Not sure if this machine can be upgraded at least not without the proper
tools.

The flash chips might be soldered on as well as the RAM.

I could perhaps do some work on it myself but this might void the
warranty.

Help from fellow academics out there? Desperate!

2015-11-01 Thread Sarah Amelia Sackville McLauchlan
Hi all!

If any of you out there are also academics, do you know of any good
citation-management software that works with Voice-Over? I’ve been trying
Zotero, but it’s a complete nightmare! And I didn’t find Refworks all that
accessible either (though that was with a different screen-reader before I
switched to Mac). Besides, it’s expensive I gather, and tied to your
university. Now, expensive I don’t necessarily mind, if I can be reasonably
sure it’s going to actually work before I spend the money. But, if possible,
I’d like something I can use whether I’m formally affiliated with a university
or not, because, once I finish my doctorate, I may not always be. But I’ll
still want to do academic work, submitting to conferences and journals and the
like, and I’ll still want to publish! Oh! And it also needs to be something
that will allow me to create citations in a variety of styles, not just in one.
My work is interdisciplinary, so I sometimes have to use MLA and at other
times APA, for example, depending on which course, conference or journal I’m
writing for. Anyway, if any of you know of a citation-management software
that’s VO compatible that’d work for that stuff, it’d be a real life-saver! So
thanks!

Re: Help from fellow academics out there? Desperate!

2015-11-01 Thread Henry Hollithron
Good Day:

I used a Mac for the majority of my college career. After extensive
research into citation systems and word-processing applications, I settled on
LaTeX, which someone else already mentioned. Essentially, LaTeX is a markup
language wherein you specify the formatting of your document through text
commands. This already provides an advantage when, for instance, you want to
italicize something. In that case, you just write \it{whatever is supposed to
be italicized}.
The reason this is useful is because you can extend the functionality
of LaTeX with various packages, many of which deal with bibliographical styles,
including the APA, Chicago, and MLA formats. While LaTeX does not cost
anything, it might take some time to master its intricacies, but if you don’t
mind spending the time and computer space it requires, it will serve you well,
and you can be certain that your documents will come out looking very
professional.

I doubt it; Windows will, unfortunately, not be as power-efficient as OS X.

Still, you can reset SMC by shutting down the machine, disconnecting everything
except power, then pressing Control+Option+Shift+Power. Then reconnect and
reboot and see if anything changed.

Re: Having Madbook ask for password only on opening?

2015-11-01 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
This is doable, yes, and I have done it myself while travelling.

The trick here is to employ FileVault. FileVault password prompts appear when
the machine has gone to standby or hibernation. Turn off all prompting inside
OS X, and set up FileVault. Then adjust your energy preferences using System
Preferences to never go to sleep, and set your hibernation mode to hibernate
using the command line and pmset tool. Alternatively, using the same tool, set
the standby delay to something low enough that it will kick in, but high enough
that your Mac can sleep safely. I prefer the first option, even though it does
mean it takes longer to sleep and wake from hibernation. Be aware that doing
this also kills any feature that depends on sleep, for example network
availability or PowerNap.

If you want to pursue this, let us know.

Re: New laptop.

2015-11-01 Thread Sadam Ahmed

Thanks Sabahattin.

To get something that even comes close to this Mac on the PC I'd have to
spend quite a bit.

Boot Camp might be the way to go.

This way I'd get the productivity and still keep OS X around for
recording podcasts and what not.

Yours truly,

Sadam Ahmed

Hi Sadam,

As I see it, the main reason to get a Mac is OS X. Yes, you can get a PC and
save money, but Apple does design a superb combo of hardware and software, and
if you get a Mac, you can use it regardless of whether or not you get Windows.
You also get a nice, accessible safety net environment to use, and it’s easier
to work with OS X on Mac hardware than on any other platform even if you later
choose to use OS X as your secondary OS. But it’s ultimately up to you.

If you’re sticking with your Mac, then your options are virtualisation with
VMWare Fusion or BootCamp. Virtualisation works for most light applications
and is fairly easy to do, and BootCamp gives you full performance but requires
you reboot into Windows to use it. Office, at least, would be fine in a
virtual machine.

Although Apple hardware’s relationship with Windows can best be described as
temperamental cordiality, it does work very well. Like others have said here,
that MacBook that you have is really quite splendid and doesn’t yet need
replacement, although as with all current Retina Macs it will be continuing
without further upgrades until it reaches EOL. While fiddly, nothing prevents
you installing Windows on it and using it exclusively as a Windows box, and it
might be your only option when Apple stops supporting OS X on your machine. If
you are planning on this route now, let us know and I can outline the
procedure. In this way you will not lose your investment in hardware and will
probably get the best experience possible for Windows. Win win. Some would
say I was irrational, but I’d think that option was preferable even if I stop
using OS X altogether, because Apple hardware (especially notebooks) is really
very good, and a long-term investment, regardless of its quirks.

For myself, my MacBook Pro 2014 is now running Windows 8.1 exclusively, and I’m
quite enjoying it. Although using Windows reminds me painfully of why I
switched to Mac in the first place, with all that configuring and tweaking it
needs just to be useful, it does work, and it shines with a powerful light.
It’s too soon to convert my iMac, but I think Apple ultimately made the best
compromise in BootCamp for modern versions of Windows. Modern Windows is very
large, has good hardware support, delivers good speeds, and is difficult to
back up from outside Windows itself, so putting it in a partition and booting
it is really a good idea. The worst part about BootCamp is getting the bugger
installed. But there’s a preinstallation environment with NVDA that talks for
getting the installation going, and if you know what you’re doing, you can use
it to partition and install a dual-boot Windows install. This I will be doing
with my iMac once I have established what software I will be using in Windows.
Oh, and yes, browsing the web actually works in Windows. :)

So, in summary, if you have determined that the majority or most common of your
OS X apps are not meeting your needs, you probably want BootCamp. But, if you
like OS X and simply want a nice insulated Windows environment, you can use
virtualisation to get access to just those apps, like Office.

Cheers,
Sabahattin

Re: Having Madbook ask for password only on opening?

2015-11-01 Thread Alex Hall
Seems a bit complex, and I don't know about File Vault. The idea is to use
MacID on iOS to unlock my Mac, but only when I lift the lid. I suppose I could
set the display to sleep when open, but have the Mac never sleep. I'd be okay
with that, unless OS X sees a dark screen as sleeping.

Thanks Cameron your help here is appreciated.

Will check those models out.

Pretty sure there are some DJ shops that can help me out.

Will also try Ebay.

Or, if you don't need tactile EQ etc, you could go for the Mackie Onyx
Blackbird which is a 24 bit firewire audio interface with eight Onyx
mic preamps, phantom power, midi ports etc. It goes for $500.

As far as budget friendly microphones, my top choices would be the
blue spark, AKG C214, and pretty much any large diaphragm condenser
microphone from studio projects or SE Electronics. Those microphones
range in price from around $150 to $400 and up, however, a microphone

OK, yeah, that’s about the size of it. Set display sleep to 1 (it won’t
sleep), sleep itself to never. Set a password to be required when sleep
begins, and rely on lid closure to start sleep and thus require a password.
You would then wake to an operational Mac that allows authentication with your
iOS app, hopefully. This is of course not quite as secure as using FileVault,
but it will meet your requirements.

Ah, Thanks, Grant. Do you mean that ReadKit somehow interfaces/interacts with
Feedly and makes it more accessible? Where can I learn more about this?

Many thanks,

Re: Help from fellow academics out there? Desperate!

2015-11-01 Thread Jim Gatteys
Have you checked into LaTex for the mac? Believe there is software for
citations there. It is a command line driven package so there's a lot to learn
but it does work with voiceover. I have not used it in a couple of years but I
know they are still updating it.

Re: Help from fellow academics out there? Desperate!

2015-11-01 Thread David Griffith
When I did my PhD I submitted using a citation method which I think was
called Chicago or was a variant of this.
Essentially this did not involve using any footnotes but simply gave
authors name, year of publication and page number in the appropriate
sections of the text. At the end of each chapter there was a reference
list of all the publications cited in the chapter . You could then
easily track the full refernce from the author and date references in
the text. So citing my PhD for example would be done by (Griffith 2013
p347).

In the Reference section at the end of the chapter there would be
Griffith, David. 2013. Blind Justiceand so on.Only on very very
rare occasions did I use footnotes as personally I find it stylistically
clumsy. If you cannot refer to something logically and pertinently in
the text then I cannot see why anybody should resort to using a footnote
to cover up this clumsiness.

I tried out various bespoke notes applications and found them
inaccessible and/or very difficult to use.

In the end I decided it was better to concentrate on writing a good PhD
rather than getting hung up on citation systems. Nobody ever commented
adversely on my citation style.
I know different journals require differenct styles but in my area of
Law/Social Policy they all seem to allow something like this. The
advantage of this system of course is that it is accessible on all word
processing platforms capable of being used by a Screenreader.

My work is interdisciplinary, so I sometimes have to use MLA and at other

writing for. Anyway, if any of you know of a citation-management software

Re: Help from fellow academics out there? Desperate!

2015-11-01 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, Sarah.

I'm afraid I don't know of any software package that handles numerous
styles accessibly, but I can offer you a small dose of encouragement.
I had an academic career that ran from 1978-2011, and I hand-generated
citations and bibliographies as I went along without the benefit of
software, first on a manual typewriter, than on WordPerfect for DOS
and Word for Windows. I only had to deal with MLA, I admit.

Re: Bowers and Wilkins Zeppelin Air.

2015-11-01 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
I’m glad you have downloaded the app. I have now put the speaker in my Amazon
Save to later purchase as I too will be getting it when I can afford it.
Probably either near to Christmas but still not sure. The control App is very
accessible and indeed there are a few unlabelled buttons. When you get your
system, you don’t have to plug anything in once it’s turned on. All you do,
turn the system on, make sure the reset button is pressed and open your control
app and you should follow the instructions. So far I’ve only found this brand
of speaker where Voice Over will speak. Not that I’ve tried other brands but I
swear by Bowers and Wilkinsons and think it’s better than Bose as I think this
one has a more richer sound. Just my opinion of course.

Having Madbook ask for password only on opening?

2015-11-01 Thread Alex Hall
Hey all,
Quick question. On my Macbook, which is set to sleep after a certain amount of
idle time, I'd like to only enter a password if I open it. If I leave it open
for a while, I'm somewhere a password doesn't matter; if I'm not somewhere
safe, I'll close it. Is such a thing doable, or does the Mac see sleep as sleep
and not care about the lid? Thanks in advance.

Re: New laptop.

2015-11-01 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu

Cheers,
Sabahattin

Just one more thing...

Do I need a special cable to connect the mixer to the Mac?

Hi. You could go for the Mackie Onyx 1220I which is a small format
mixer with four Onyx mic preamps, line in inputs, EQ, phantom power,

Or, if you don't need tactile EQ etc, you could go for the Mackie Onyx
Blackbird which is a 24 bit firewire audio interface with eight Onyx
mic preamps, phantom power, midi ports etc. It goes for $500.

As far as budget friendly microphones, my top choices would be the
blue spark, AKG C214, and pretty much any large diaphragm condenser
microphone from studio projects or SE Electronics. Those microphones
range in price from around $150 to $400 and up, however, a microphone
above that price range would be overkill for standard podcast stuff
anyways. If you need cheaper microphones than that, let me know as
there are some tolerable options if you're really tight on money...

I'm based in the USA so prices probably will vary if you live in
