Re: Confused about bootcamp drivers for windows7 installation on mac

2016-01-13 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi,

Thanks first of all for replying.

I've failed miserable to install Windows 7 under bootcamp in El Capitan. I
think that part of the problem is Bootcamp in El Capitan which seems to work
differently to all the descriptions I have seen here on the list and on Apple's
pages. When I start the process, I only ever get two checkboxes. The first is
to download the appropriate drivers onto the usb flash drive formatted with Ms
dos FAT and the scheme needs to be set to master boot record. Then there is
only one more checkbox to install Windows 7. The drivers were duly downloaded
and put onto the flash drive. Then on the second screen I again only have two
checkboxes: first is unchecked as default because the drivers are already
installed onto the flash drive, and the second is checked by default to do with
installing Windows. I first thought I could install from iso file but I was
wrong. Bootcamp wasn't seeing the iso file and kept returning an error
message. So I then found the original Windows 7 disk, inserted it into the
super drive and the installation went ahead. The mac drive was divided and
computer restarted. From there, I needed sighted assistance. There was a
message on the screen to decide onto which partition to install Windows. There
were 4 partitions to choose from. It really confused me because there was only
one with the name bootcamp in it and when I chose - or rather the sighted
friend - to install on it - I got an error message. I became worried I might
destroy my mac partition by not knowing what I was doing and I aborted the
process and thankfully via bootcamp returned my mac to its original state. I'm
not so keen on doing the installation again. Many of the Apple support pages
on the subject of Windows 7 installation with bootcamp are for previous
versions of bootcamp. My version of bootcamp in El Capitan is 6. I'm really
frustrated that sometimes Apple just makes things so automated that one can't
make any choices.

So that's my story of woes.

Best wishes to everyone

Andrew,
I fought with this for several weeks before I figured out that my particular
Mac needed me to download the drivers from Apple.
I had to create the bootable USB drive.
It’s said you need a 16GB flash drive, and that’s what I got, but not sure why
that size.
1. Go in to Bootcamp utility.
2. check the first 2 boxes to create the installation media, and to download
latest drivers from Apple.( this 2nd box is unavailable so is not changeable)
The 3rd box should be unchecked as you do not want to completely install just
yet.
With some Macs this is all you had to do and you could check that 3rd box and
complete the installation, but in my case, I had to download the drivers from
apple and add them to the newly created flash drive installer.
Once you have downloaded the drivers from Apple for your specific Mac, you can
copy and paste the “Bootcamp” and “$WinPEDriver$” folders to the main area of
your newly created Windows installer.
Now you can go back in to Bootcamp utility and uncheck the first 2 boxes and
check only the 3rd, and complete installation of Windows.

I do not know this for sure, but I think it has to do with the SSD’s in the
newer Macs. I also think most of the problems are installing Windows 7, and I
suspect the proper drivers are just not available on the Win 7 disk.

I hope this helps someone, and please let me know if I need to clarify
anything. Wrote this quickly.

I agree.

And remember, we're talking two different things here. Hotspots are not the
same as webspots. I mean, they kind of are, in a sense, but not exactly.

Re: Cutting the cable

2016-01-13 Thread Scott Granados
Just to ad to that, if you have T-Mobile you’re automatically opted in to a
service that gives free streaming to certain locations like Netflix. This
being said, they also massively manipulate your data stream to these sites and
you’re not getting the rate you think. So if you want true uninterrupted video
with the right bit rate you’ll want to turn this feature off which is free to
do.

So just be careful and understand what you’re using.

Mac has a built-in (or formerly had a built-in) optical drive. If you have,
you don’t get the chance to use an ISO. Typically USB boot (from MBR) is not
supported on these models, so you will need the optical drive, one way or the
other. Unfortunately, yes, BootCamp Help assumes a modern Mac with no optical
drive, and simply doesn’t cover the case where you do not. That’s progress,
you know. :)

You install onto the partition called “BOOTCAMP”, formatting it first to NTFS
in Windows Setup. You do not under any circumstances try to adjust the
partition tables. A separate, more involved process is used to get Windows
onto your Mac without a copy of OS X, which is unsupported by Apple.

There is a hack by which means you can trick BootCamp Assistant into thinking
you have a modern Mac so you end up with a bootable USB drive. If you fancy
giving it a try, and don’t mind adjusting XML files in TextEdit and re-signing
the app, then I’ll see if I can’t help you with that. It isn’t actually
guaranteed to work, though.

Cutting the cable

2016-01-13 Thread Nora
I did away with my cable 2 years ago and only have Internet at my house via
iPhone hotspot (T-Mobile) . I have been happy but I do not do much streaming.
I think if my tmobile signal was stronger I would stream more video; FYI if
T-mobile is your provider, you can do Netflix streaming that will not count on
your data usage.

Re: Checking app availability

2016-01-13 Thread Jeff Berwick
I have looked into this briefly, and I think that you can use WhatsApp through
their website--if you authorize it with your phone. I believe you have to scan
a bar code on their website to allow you to use the browser to access your

I am sorry to hear this and do not have an answer. But I have a

I already have a setup to play my music through speakers and thus do

issue from a friend

2016-01-13 Thread Denise Barajas
Hello all,
I recently was talking to a friend of mine who claims to be having issues when
trying to copy and paste text from the Internet fromhis Mac onto a different
location. I heard him try and mess with the command, but Voiceover kept
repeating the first thing he was selecting all the time, and we made sure that
things like quick nav were off and the like. I believe he's using a Macbook Pro
2013 but he is also using the latest version of Yosemeti. He's tried to restart
the machine and VO, but to no avail. If any suggestions could be offered, that
would greatly be appreciated.
Blessings to oyou all.

Re: Confused about bootcamp drivers for windows7 installation on mac

2016-01-13 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi Sabahattin,

Thanks for this. I'd better not attempt anything as ambitious as you hinted
at: I have far too little knowhow in programming.

you mentioned that the bootcamp partition onto which Windows 7 should have been
installed should have been partitioned prior as ntf. I kind of assumed that
Bootcamp would have done it before asking me on to which partition I wished to
install Windows. I think I'd better leave this until I have understood the
process better. By the way, when reading various support pages, is there a way
of ascertaining how old the info on such pages is? This is rather crucial
since we are now on El Capitan, and the recommended Bootcamp version for my
macbook air late 2010 was 4.4 and yet El Capitan has a later version of
Bootcamp, i.e. Bootcamp 6. So obviously the page where I got the info from
can't have been the most recent one. Goodness knows whether Apple updates
these pages or not.

Best wishes

Andrew

Re: mac and firefox?

2016-01-13 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
1. Webvisum is dead. It's not even certified anymore for Firefox. I think
they did that at the beginning of this month. Don't even get me started on
that rant!

2. It never worked on the IPhone as far as I know.

3. Apparently Singing Sparrow clames to have gotten Firefox to work
successfully on the mac with Yosemite, but when asked for an audio demo, as
no one else at all is having that luck, he's not responded.

So, I'm still not sure.

Hi,

Ah, how strange! When I was researching what version of Windows I could run on
my late 2010 macbook air, the highest version I found was windows 7. I
understood that I just could not run windows 10. Otherwise I would have gone

Bootcamp wasn't seeing the iso file and kept returning an error message.

Adding items not running to the dock?

2016-01-13 Thread Keith Hinton
Hi folks,
I'm curious, but how does somebody go about adding an application that
might not currently be running to the dock?

The dock is a feature of OS Ten despite having used OS Ten for over
two years now that I've never really used.
Usually, I've always gone in to the applications area and launched an
application with command-O.
I'd like to start adding other applications other than Mail, Safari,
etc to the Dock though for faster access.

VMware Fusion is an application that I tend to do serious Windows work
in for quite a lot of things.
So, how might I go about adding Fusion to the dock for example for
faster productivity?

Thanks,
Keith

Keith,

Control+Command+t is the shortcut (press when the focus is in Finder on the
application you need).

Sidenote: I also haven't really figured out a place for the Doc in my user
experience. Seems like not much key combinations to save: Command+Shift+a +
first letter navigation or VO+d + first letter navigation.

If anyone has a practical use (not just a habitual user pattern) for the Doc,
please, share. Actually, the same holds true for the Launchpad.

Keyboard shortcuts broken after VMware's remote support

Linux does not. Bummer -- but that's another thread.

VMware seems to have broken my Mac key mappings. Most noticable case in
point ...

Command+M no longer takes me to the menu bar. Rather Vo responds "Minimize."
If I want the menu bar, I have to do Ctrl+F2, a more awkward gesture.

There are other mapping issues as well. For instance, I can't seem to
actually get my keyboard into the Windows vm. I seem stuck in the VMware
chrome on the Mac. I'll have to hack at this one.

Anyone know, or have a thought of what might have happened here? How do
I get my familiar Apple mappings back?

Thanks in advance for any help on this one particularly.

mac and firefox?

2016-01-13 Thread Maria Chapman
HI. Just downloaded the latest version of firefox. Anyone have any
accessibility tips? or is it still not that accessible? Is anyone able to use
web Visum successfully? If so can someone explain how to install it? I can get
to the install page but when I click install nothing happens.
ps:
does web Visum work on the iPhone?
thanks

Re: Unresponsive text input field [Was: No sound in vm's after upgrading to VMware 8]

2016-01-13 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Hi, I have an update on my VMware 8 problem. I'll respond on this thread
about the problem allowing VMware Support to remotely access my machine
...

It turned out Firefox wasn't of help anymore than Safari or
Google-Chrome. We resolved the problem by having the VMware tech email
me a complete URI that included the particulars. That allowed me past
that part of the process and into the menu where I could allow them
access.

Unfortunately, the problems didn't end there. Once the Cisco Webex
screen was up, I had to work around buttons without labels. Fortunately,
the menu bar provided another way to allow VMware to start the remote
session. Interestingly, it came with a keyboard shortcut.

More in my other response.

Re: mac and firefox?

2016-01-13 Thread Devin Prater
Yeah. Firefox is okay, but for such a great blind developer on the team, it
can't even display page-loading progress bars on Windows. So don't expect the
great Firefox to become accessible any time soon. Yes, you can use Webvisum
still, but with the added security risks associated with enabling unsigned
addons all across the board. Why Firefox, of all companies, are taking this
Apple-like lockdown is beyond me, but ah well.

Re: No sound in vm's after upgrading to VMware 8

2016-01-13 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Hi, My second update on my problem with of no sound in my virtual
machines after upgrading to VMware 8.

After getting through the issues of allowing VMware support remote
access to my Airbook, the problem for Windows 7 was solved fairly
easily. There was apparently a screen popup that I had never encountered
relating to updating the VMware Tools for this virtual machine. Once
that was done, NVDA and all system sounds worked as expected. I have now
cloned my Win7 machine and expect to do an upgrade to Win10 in the next
day or so.

There was no success getting sound working for my Fedora 22 virtual
machine. Reinstalling the VMware Tools for Linux did not solve the
problem. The machine launches and appears to be running, but no sound is
communicated to the Airbook's audio device. I can ssh into the machine
and ascertain that all the alsa settings are correct. An apaly command
behaves as though sound were playing--but no sound eminates. Nor is
espeak speaking.

As my support person was apparently at the end of their knowledge for
Linux vms, I decided not to worry so much about fixing this particular
machine, but to take another tack toward a possible solution.

I will try a fresh Fedora (or possibly an Arch) install this weekend. If
that works, I won't mind deleting the now out of date Fedora.

So, more news to come in this saga.

Meanwhile, I realize I have a third issue as a result of VMware's remote
tinkering. Guess I'll start another thread for that one ...

Re: Confused about bootcamp drivers for windows7 installation on mac

2016-01-13 Thread Andrew Lamanche
That was exactly part of the confusion: I did put the iso file on the desktop
as I had read something to that effect in some of the support pages. But
bootcamp 6 on my late 2010 macbook air would not even recognise it and there
was no option to point it to the iso file. It insisted on having a physical
disk in the drive. So in the end I did insert a genuine physical windows 7
disk into my external usb super drive and the process proceeded up until I
chose the partition with bootcamp from the list onto which to install windows
and to my horror a message came up that windows could not be installed onto
this partition. Att that point, mindful of my ignorance, I thought it better
to abort the process rather than risk damage to my macbook air. Maybe bootcamp
6 is designed in such a way so as not to allow installations from iso in El
Capitan. Apple may have decided to protect users like myself from playing
around too much. :)

Many thanks for your responses, everyone. I think I will give it a rest for a
while. Got a bit scared.

Re: Confused about bootcamp drivers for windows7 installation on mac

2016-01-13 Thread E.T.

Andrew,
You might need to call Apple to verify this. Information I found
indicates that El Capitan on your model Mac will only support Windows 8
or newer

IF you already had Windows 7 installed under Bootcamp, then this
would work. So this means that as a NEW installation, Windows 7 is not
supported. That would explain what happened. Not what you wanted to hear.

Would Windows 10 work for you? I am still using Yosemite and Windows
7. I have 2 apps that will not work under 10.

I first thought I could install from iso file but I was
wrong. Bootcamp wasn't seeing the iso file and kept returning an error
message. So I then found the original Windows 7 disk, inserted

i

t into the super drive and the installation went ahead. The mac drive was
divided and computer restarted. From there, I needed sighted assistance.
There was a message on the screen to decide onto which partition to install
Windows. There were 4 partitions to choose from. It really confused me
because there was only one with the name bootcamp in it and when I chose - or
rather the sighted friend - to install on it - I got an error message. I
became worried I might destroy my mac partition by not knowing what I was doing
and I aborted the process and thankfully via bootcamp returned my mac to its
original state. I'm not so keen on doing the installation again. Many of the
Apple support pages on the subject of Windows 7 installation with bootcamp are
for previous versions of bootcamp. My version of bootcamp in El Capitan is 6.
I'm really frustrated that sometimes Apple just makes things so automated that
one can't make any choices.

So that's my story of woes.

Best wishes to everyone

Andrew

1. Go in to Bootcamp utility.
2. check the first 2 boxes to create the installation media, and to download
latest drivers from Apple.( this 2nd box is unavailable so is not changeable)
The 3rd box should be unchecked as you do not want to completely install just

With some Macs this is all you had to do and you could check that 3rd box and

Re: mac and firefox?

2016-01-13 Thread Michael Marshall
hey,
i spoke to the blind developer that works for firefox and he told me around a
year ago that firefox were not as interested in mac accessibility because there
Focus is predominately windows and smart phones.
I need hardly ad that i think this is a load of rubbish.

Mozilla is the developer of Firefox and Thunderbird, two of their

Yes, you can use Webvisum still, but with the added security risks
associated with enabling unsigned addons all across the board. Why
Firefox, of all companies, are taking this Apple-like lockdown is
beyond me, but ah well.

HI. Just downloaded the latest version of firefox. Anyone have any
accessibility tips? or is it still not that accessible? Is anyone
able to use web Visum successfully? If so can someone explain how to
install it? I can get to the install page but when I click install
nothing happens.
ps:
does web Visum work on the iPhone?
thanks

Re: Confused about bootcamp drivers for windows7 installation on mac

2016-01-13 Thread E.T.
Where did you put the ISO file? Desktop would be a good place.
Bootcamp partition is the one that you want.

I first thought I could install from iso file but I was
wrong. Bootcamp wasn't seeing the iso file and kept returning an error
message. So I then found the original Windows 7 disk, inserted i

t into the super drive and the installation went ahead.

Andrew

Andrew,
I fought with this for several weeks before I figured out that my particular

Hi,

When installing Windows 7 in bootcamp from ISO, is it necessary to manually get
the appropriate Apple drivers for windows, or will Bootcamp get them
automatically and install them?

I've been poring through help pages and I can see confusing info.

Many thanks
