Re: Macbook Pro 2010 Hardware Upgrade questions

2016-11-03 Thread Scott Granados
A big +1 to Crucial. I use their SSD drives and memory as well. You can
browse to their site and use the system configurator to match the right
hardware to the drives you want to upgrade. They also show you what tools
you’ll need and provide them at a very reasonable cost.

Big fan of Crucial and Mikron.

Re: 2016 Macbook Pro

2016-11-03 Thread Scott Granados
Hi Helga, you should be able to use an adapter to convert to the form of USB
you require, I wouldn’t think that would be a problem.

As for trade in, Apple does have a refurbished computer program but I would
think you would make a lot more money selling the air directly maybe on
Craigslist or Ebay.

Hope that helps

I will be starting an online class that requires that I do braille translation

Re: Here comes a new adopter: I'm a really! really! happy camper

2016-11-03 Thread Scott Granados
Hi Sharon, great questions.

The lightning connector has been on the iPhone now for several generations.
This is the small connector that can be attached in either direction and
provides power or a data connection to the phone. On the 6 and 6S it’s the
connector next to the 3.5 jack.
An adapter is included in the box with the phone that has this small
connector on one side and a 3.5 inch jack on the other both attached with a
small length of wire. You could use a regular 3.5 inch cable to teach to your
hearing system.
Another option is a set of headphones is included. These feel just
like the existing pods they include with the previous versions with the
lightning small connector on the plug end instead of the 3.5 jack. In all
other ways though the headphones feel and appear the same.
As for the sound quality, that’s a subjective thing but I personally
like the sound of the lightning connected products a lot more. The sound clips
less, you can get a louder signal and with the adapter I can even power a pair
of high end AKG reference headphones that normally the iPhone didn’t have
enough go juice to power but in the new design it works great even with out a
headphone amplifier.

Bluetooth is another connection method, it’s very good on the iPhone 7/7+ but
it is entirely wireless and is the standard you’re used to. The lightning
connected products work very very well though.

Hope that helps.

Radium

2016-11-03 Thread Mary Otten
I got a response to my email to the folks at radium regarding the recent
message that the app needs to be updated for iOS 10, and it is not good news.
Radium, they informed me, is no longer being developed. They did say they are
maintaining their database. They did not specify that it was only the iPhone
app that was not being developed. My question was about that app, but they said
nothing at all about the Mac app, no distinction was drawn between the iPhone
app being developed or not and the Mac app being developed or not. Therefore, I
think it means radium development is not happening on any front. Too bad, as it
was a great app but will undoubtedly come up not working at all sooner or later.

Re: 2016 Macbook Pro

2016-11-03 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I doubt that Apple would take your MacBook Air on trade. You'd likely need to
see it yourself elsewhere. Regarding the USB connectivity. You'll just need
to purchase an adaptor that can go from USB C to USB. There are adaptors that
do this by themselves, or multi-function adaptors that allow you to connect USB
devices and charge simultaneously along with other functions.

Re: 2016 Macbook Pro

2016-11-03 Thread Helga Schreiber
Hi all! How are you all? I'm interesting in getting the new MacBook Pro 13
inches next year, but the problem for me is that it does not have USV drive.
In other words, I can't use a UsV drive, and I use USV drives for school. Now I
have a MacBook Air 11 inches, which I bought last year. I have a question, do
you thinkI can sell my Mac to apple and buy the new one? Just wondering. And my
other question is, how I will use myUSV drive for school on the new Macbook
Pro? I do use my Trackpad on my macbook air, but not so much. That is why I
think I'm not ready to use the new Macbook Pro without USV drive and with
touch bar. I will really appreciate any opinion about this matter. I wil use
JAWS on my new Macbook Pro with vm ware fusion. I look forward in hearing form
you soon. Thanks and God bless!

I'll add my +1 here, too. I'm hoping to get the 13-inch MBP with touch

well Apple has demonstrated its commitment to keeping technology
accessible. Not saying there won't be some hiccups at the beginning, but
I'm confident that the blind users won't be left out of touchbar access.
And, I also have to say that I'm genuinely intrigued by the touch bar
concept. Looking forward to seeing first-hand how it works.

 I currently have a 2013 11-inch MBA. I'll upgrade from 8 to 16GB of ram,

new Mac to stay viable for as long as possible.) Haven't yet decided how
 much storage I want.

I will get the 256 model, I have a MacMini with 512 SSD right now, and don’t
even fill up half of it. The reason being, I have a net work attach storage
server with 24TB and a time capsule with 3TB, so I see no need to save anything
internally. I am looking forward to mastering the touch bar, although I am
sure that will take a little longer than it usually does, since the touch bar
will be app specific.

Could you clarify for me please?

What holiday season is it you are referring to?

Does America have big holidays coming up for some reason?

Hello All,

It's been a while since last I posted as a moderator. This is because as
responsible men and women, I trust that everyone in this community will
conduct themselves in a gracious and kind manner.

Having said this, in light of the post, upon which I am commenting, I say
the following:

Scott, (and everyone, for that matter), name calling is unacceptable and
inexcusable in this community and it simply will not be tolerated.

In my world, this sentiment is clear but just in case you live in a
different world, this means that should anyone persists with this kind of
behavior, they will be banned from the list.

I will post this in a completely separate thread, also, just so everyone
will see it.

To end on a positive note, I wish you all the best holiday season, ever.

Sincerely,

Mark

Anyone who wishes the correct answer including you Ray please contact me off

Guys,

I don't know how to better explain this, and honestly, I'm getting a bit

I have a friend who is on this list. I'm not going to reveal which member it
is, as I don't wish to put anyone here on the spot. I'm not even going to
reveal their gender.

Anyway, he/she has just recently obtained an iPhone. They are incredibly new
to the iPhone world. In fact, they are new to the smart phone world in
general.

When they go into settings, Cellular, they see things using data like Apple
Music, YOutube, etc. I tried to explain to them that yes, those things are
turned on, as they are set to where cellular data is allowed to be used with
the apps.

I told them that if they either turn off any of those apps, or for that
mind, do what they wanna do by totally turning cellular off completely,
that's not a very wise idea in most cases. I tried explaining that when
cellular is off, then nothing will work if they're on the Verizon cellular
4G/LTE network. The only time they'd have data internet connectivity would
be if they were on a wifi network. Obviously, they don't believe me, or
don't understand, one of the two.

I don't know how to explain this any easier. I told them that all they're
doing by disabling those apps under there like Apple Music, etc. is, they're
not disabling the apps from currently! using data. All they're doing is
disabling the apps so they never! will use cellular.

The example I gave them was, if they turn off Apple Music, then any time
they move out of range of their wifi, they won't be able to use Apple Music,
as they've disabled it from being able to be used with Cellular.

I told them, if they turn off cellular entirely, then they won't be able to
receive phone calls nor make calls, etc. unless they are on a wifi network,
as they do have wifi calling enabled.

Of corse, if they're on wifi, then their internet would also work
regardless, but as soon as

I know about it now having the two rear cameras. Does it also have two

Also, with this thing now in the case, I can't quite tell, but where're

thought they were frontfacing not bottom facing, but I could be wrong.

Yeah, that headphone jack's definitely gone all right. God that feels
trippy! BTW, I really really like the new home button, how they put 3D
force touch into it instead of it being a physical button that literally
moves when pressed. I have my click set on 2, and for me, that's
perfect! I'm still frustrated that I don't get both the Siri enhanced

being so much better? I might not wind up needing it. I might actually
be able very well to get away with Alex. I'm gonna try.

Also, is it just me, or am I correct that the thing is more responsive
and faster than the 6+?

Good! God that sounds good! Right as I was typing, Alex finnished
downloading, and started barreling through. Wow! I'm impressed!

Again, is there anything you'd say to try specifically that I may either
see is different/new, or that I may see a huge improvement in with
performance? I hear the battery in this thing is freaking insane!

Anyway, you guys let me know, and by the way, over the past month or so,
though very few they were, thank you all for helping me with the couple
questions along the way I did have when researching. I really feel that
with you all's help, along with Apple Accessibility, I was able to make
a very well-rounded and well researched decision on my purchase.

For those who've got the 7+, not the 7, but specifically the 7+, how're
you all liking it compared to the 6 generations?

Re: Macbook Pro 2010 Hardware Upgrade questions

2016-11-03 Thread Tim Kilburn
hi,

Most SSD's should work. I like the Crucial ones myself, but there's lots out
there that will do the job. You'll need to take into account the size of your
current HD and decide if you want the same size, smaller or bigger. It all
depends on your usage. It will likely be a matter of cost for you, but the 512
GB ones would likely do the job. On my machine, I took out the optical drive,
installed my 7200 RPM 750 GB drive into that location and installed the SSD
into where the HD normally resides. With this configuration, I only needed to
purchase a 256 GB SSD as I created a Fusion array between the old HD and new
SSD, giving me a 1 TB Fusion Drive Lots of storage and very quick.

Re: Macbook Pro 2010 Hardware Upgrade questions

2016-11-03 Thread Sarai Bucciarelli
Hi:
So Sierra shouldn’t affect voiceover on such an old unit?
I’m going to have to buy the SSD and battery on my own. How do I pick which SSD
to purchase? If I can get more years out of this Mac then I’ll be happy. When
finances change, then I’ll upgrade.

Re: 2016 Macbook Pro

2016-11-03 Thread Donna Goodin
I'll add my +1 here, too. I'm hoping to get the 13-inch MBP with touch bar. I
agree with David's comments re the importance of blind users figuring out how
to stay current, and also with his statement about how well Apple has
demonstrated its commitment to keeping technology accessible. Not saying there
won't be some hiccups at the beginning, but I'm confident that the blind users
won't be left out of touchbar access. And, I also have to say that I'm
genuinely intrigued by the touch bar concept. Looking forward to seeing
first-hand how it works.

I currently have a 2013 11-inch MBA. I'll upgrade from 8 to 16GB of ram, and
get the fastest I7 processor. (I don't upgrade every year, so want my new Mac
to stay viable for as long as possible.) Haven't yet decided how much storage I
want.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: MODERATOR NOTE: RE: Wifi VS. Cellular?

2016-11-03 Thread Scott Granados
Yep, Thanks Giving is a big one here when we celebrate the native Americans
helping us survive the winter and we thanked them by taking their land and
running them in to the pacific.;)

The funny thing it’s a big deal where I am, Plymouth Rock is not far from where
I’m sitting. The fake mayflower they have there isn’t bad either. I like the
revolutionary war stuff better but the pilgrims story isn’t bad. Could deal
with out the Puritans and witch burnings but hey, LSD will push people over the
edge which is what happened here. The fungus growing on the wheat produces
lysergic acid and well the good people of Salem were on a bad trip.;)

History is interesting.

Totally agree here. I’ve done similar upgrades myself and experienced a
massive improvement in performance. My understanding is you could be talking
80X or 80 times faster on the disk access which is a huge improvement.

Re: 2016 Macbook Pro

2016-11-03 Thread Scott Granados
Thats a big +1 from me, totally agree David.

I will probably go with a 2016 model because I usually update every year. I am
considering the 15 inch model with the light bar and the fastest I7 option.
I’m not sure if I will go 1 or 2 TB of storage, 2 TB is a huge amount. I have
a 1 TB drive now and don’t come anywhere near filling it up. I do wish there
was a 32 GB option but we’ve covered that, 16 seems to be all the memoryI can
get at least for this year. I will also buy the upgraded graphics option for
faster graphics performance and because I experiment a lot with drones and
video feeds from different arial platforms. Also like producing youtube videos.

I totally agree with David’s position on technology and am glad apple puts a
lot of thought in to the accessibility side of things.

2016-11-03 Thread David Chittenden
I would prefer a full touchscreen. However, Apple does not have one yet. So, I
would prefer an iPad Pro, Mac, combo unit. Apple does not have that yet either.
My current Mac is a MacBook Air 11" 2011. It is getting old. It only has 2 GB
RAM as that was the maximum available at the time. Likewise, it only has 128 GB
internal storage. My new iPhone 7 (the plus was unavailable) has 256 GB storage.

The world is going touchscreen. Apple continues its commitment to
accessibility. Eventually, the world will go to air gestures. Legal blindness
is 0.5% of the population. This means, we must adapt to general market tech and
innovations, whenever possible. We do not have the numbers to make the market
adapt to us. Therefore, I go to the latest, not last years tech, whenever
possible. This way, I stay ahead / in the curve, as much as possible, and
therefore, remain relavent.

Re: Macbook Pro 2010 Hardware Upgrade questions

2016-11-03 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

The SSD will actually make a huge difference. Since you already have 8 GB RAM,
that's a good thing as well. I've put SSD's into quite a number of 2012 MBP's
lately and the users have noticed huge improvements. With respect to
installing Sierra on that machine, it's kind of your call. It will add some
features, but some new features require newer hardware. It certainly shouldn't
hurt your machine or slow it down that much with the installation of the SSD
and with 8 GB of RAM on board.

Hello All,

It's been a while since last I posted as a moderator. This is because as
responsible men and women, I trust that everyone in this community will conduct
themselves in a gracious and kind manner.

Having said this, in light of the post, upon which I am commenting, I say the

Scott, (and everyone, for that matter), name calling is unacceptable and
inexcusable in this community and it simply will not be tolerated.

In my world, this sentiment is clear but just in case you live in a different

I will post this in a completely separate thread, also, just so everyone will

RE: MODERATOR NOTE: RE: Wifi VS. Cellular?

2016-11-03 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Mark,

Could you clarify for me please?

What holiday season is it you are referring to?

Does America have big holidays coming up for some reason?

 Cheers,

Simon F

Importance: High

Hello All,

It's been a while since last I posted as a moderator. This is because as
responsible men and women, I trust that everyone in this community will conduct
themselves in a gracious and kind manner.

Having said this, in light of the post, upon which I am commenting, I say the
following:

Scott, (and everyone, for that matter), name calling is unacceptable and
inexcusable in this community and it simply will not be tolerated.

In my world, this sentiment is clear but just in case you live in a different
world, this means that should anyone persists with this kind of behavior, they
will be banned from the list.

I will post this in a completely separate thread, also, just so everyone will
see it.

To end on a positive note, I wish you all the best holiday season, ever.

Sincerely,

Mark

It’s to bad you’re both wrong and Chris asked the question because this is
right in my area but since he blocks me and since he’s such an ass to everybody
I guess the wrong information will have to be out there.

Anyone who wishes the correct answer including you Ray please contact me off
list. Aside from Chris of course.

They are incredibly new to
the iPhone world. In fact, they are new to the smart phone world in general.

When they go into settings, Cellular, they see things using data like Apple
Music, YOutube, etc. I tried to explain to them that yes, those things are
turned on, as they are set to where cellular data is allowed to be used with
the apps.

I told them that if they either turn off any of those apps, or for that mind,
do what they wanna do by totally turning cellular off completely, that's not a
very wise idea in most cases. I tried explaining that when cellular is off,
then nothing will work if they're on the Verizon cellular 4G/LTE network. The
only time they'd have data internet connectivity would be if they were on a
wifi network. Obviously, they don't believe me, or don't understand, one of the
two.

I don't know how to explain this any easier. I told them that all they're doing
by disabling those apps under there like Apple Music, etc. is, they're not
disabling the apps from currently! using data. All they're doing is disabling
the apps so they never! will use cellular.

The example I gave them was, if they turn off Apple Music, then any time they
move out of range of their wifi, they won't be able to use Apple Music, as
they've disabled it from being able to be used with Cellular.

I told them, if they turn off cellular entirely, then they won't be able to
receive phone calls nor make calls, etc. unless they are on a wifi network, as
they do have wifi calling enabled.

Of corse, if they're on wifi, then their internet would also work regardless,
but as soon as they move away from the wifi range, their internet would go
kaput and so would their incoming and outgoing calls.

I tried explaining that by it saying those apps use cellular data, that doesn't
mean they're necessarily using their 6 gigs of data right then and there. The
only time that happens is if they're not on a wifi network, at which
