Re: Let's Use Social Media to Advocate for The Visually Impaired

2017-03-23 Thread E.T.

Let me add some flour and yeast to the mix also.

Ours is not a very cohesive society. Its extremely fragmented on
many levels. I won't go into the politics of it, just that its
unfortunate that all the various pieces have to practice their own
advocacy to achieve the same goal. As far as those with disabilities,
while the ADA was a necessary instrument whose aim is to level the
playing field, it has not made society inclusive thus the ongoing
battles and skirmishes since its inception when it was passed 27 years ago.

Ofcourse Fusion Pro might be for professional use but what can you do with pro

I need to deside if i should buy pro or fusion only.

Re: Let's Use Social Media to Advocate for The Visually Impaired

2017-03-23 Thread David Chittenden
There is a huge difference between minor vision loss and low vision, and then
another huge difference between low vision and legal blindness. Legal blindness
is 20/200, 6/60, or worse in the better eye after correction. Low vision, is
any vision which is better than that, and worse than 20/60, 6/18, which is the
lowest vision permitted to drive a car. Sight loss is anything worse than
perfect vision.

My fiancé has visual acuity of 6/15, 20/50, so is able to drive. She
occasionally uses a magnifier, and uses screen enlargement on occasion. So, we
can technically say she suffers from sight loss. She has no need of using
VoiceOver, though she occasionally uses speak screen. She also uses Zoom fairly
regularly: She falls into the 400 million category which is sited below.

Legal blindness is between 0.5% and 0.6% of the population. Including people
like my partner, who does everything via vision, is probably muddying the
waters a bit.

Kind regards,

I came across a useful app yesterday for the I phone. For those of you who
live in the UK, the HMRC App which is designed for those who pay taxes is very
voice over accessible. You can even calculate your taxes for your take home
pay and perhaps for your tax returns for those who are self employed.

not touch screen and I can operate it using the Mac. There is a tool which you
can use to put in your own wifi details and perfectly accessible. My cartridge
has not run out and you can get the cartridge from Amazon. I have one in my
saved items for later.

I thought it used to be just the letter “q” if you were in the track. But the
problem with that is you need to ensure that your quantizing correctly first I
wouldn’t just quantize a track that could be detramental.

Re: printer with voiceover

2017-03-23 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I find that the ink jet are much cheaper out of the box, but they'll kill you
with ink costs. the laser printers may cost more to start with, but with how
many pages you can get out of the toners, it's well worth it to me. I went
with the Lexmark CX410, but just about any known manufacturer that puts out the
laser printer has good quality stuff nowadays. Most have a web interface for
set up and configuration, so usable by VO users quite well.

2017-03-23 Thread Scott Granados
I have to disagree with this. You’d be absolutely right if we were a huge
subsection of the population, but we’re not. We’re to small of a group for the
general population to gain any nuance about our existence. Most people go
through life with out ever encountering a blind person, to add all these
variables will just confuse or offset them. I suspect that reality lies
somewhere in-between somewhere but I think Mark’s efforts have some value. You
raise interesting points I just wonder if there are to few of us.

Good thought provoker though, thank you.

Re: Let's Use Social Media to Advocate for The Visually Impaired

2017-03-23 Thread Karen Lewellen

mark,
I wish to interject something I feel you and those of you who resonate
with this effort should consider.

Speaking only for myself I feel one reason why it can be challenging to
instigate impact is the way you discuss the experience of sight loss as
if it is totally and absolutely the opposite of sight, speak of the what
400 million people on the planet estimated to be living with sight loss as
if they are the
same / interchangeable with each other, and make no effort to establish
frames of reference for the people you want to reach.
Frankly I feel it is just as important for visible diverse and positive
images of individuals living with sight loss to appear in popular culture
as it is to create employment.
Because if people simply work with the dictionary that says blind /
sighted, they are going to be what they are...very confused.
To suggest that individual uniqueness never exists, or goes out of the
window when scores on an eye chart differ is counterproductive.
Speaking only for myself, I feel this is part of why there are so few
tools in the first place. why does one need several ways to do a task, if
"the blind," are spoken of so uniformly as if there are a composite whole?
Seek a place in society yes, but demonstrate that you have earned
that place. By your talent, your uniqueness, and what you share with the
rest of humanity. You matter because you exist, equally able to fortify
the fabric of society, individually with what makes you special,
collectively with what gives you the chance to view the world differently.

Off my soapbox now, smiles.

Hello All,

Earlier this week, both Apple and Starbucks announced that they were, in
effect, reaffirming their commitments to several agendas.

In apple's case, they introduced iPhone 7 and 7 Plus RED Special Edition,
which is intended to give customers a way to participate in the fight
against aids.

In Starbucks case, they affirmed their commitment to hiring thousands and
thousands of veterans and immigrants.

Upon reading each of these announcements, via various social media outlets,
I requested that these two companies make a commitment to the blind and low
vision.

To Apple, I asked that they play a more active role in research that will
bring, eyesight, (in quote marks) to the blind and low vision.

To Starbucks, I asked that they commit to a policy of hiring blind and low
vision employees, where reasonably possible.

I am posting this to the list in order to ask those of you with social media
accounts to make similar requests of these and any other companies that
boast of their commitments to investing in any particular demographic.

We must begin to directly advocate for ourselves, as visually impaired
people, if major change is ever going to occur and we must do it on the
global stage so that our sighted counterparts will know that we are here and
that we matter.

Re: printer with voiceover

2017-03-23 Thread Scott Granados
I bought the 551N from a liquidator so got it for pennies on the dollar so I’d
shop it around.

Ink supplies are like $100 to $200 but last for a very very long time. I
bought mine in 2013 and have only changed the supplies once. It’s a whole
toner drum and inks deal like a copier.

Re: Apple music on android.

2017-03-23 Thread Scott Granados
Anders, no need at all to turn it off. Just do the process as normal and when
prompted again to enter your password enter the password + the 6 digits in the
same field as one long value. YOu’ll be good and no need to disable anything.

 android.
However when i click the login button i get a dialog telling me to type
the password together with the 2 step verification code sent to my other

THen there is a try again button and i come back to the login screen.
I can not find any where to type the verification code.
So i am wondering if i should type the email in the e-mail field and the
password and the verification code in the password field together?
It sounds very odd to me but i want to try apple music out on my android

Thanks in advance for all help.

GPG tools now supported by Sierra apple mail again

2017-03-23 Thread Scott Granados
Just wanted to give everyone the heads up using Sierra that GPG tools now works
on Sierra again. It’s been reworked to work with Sierra Apple mail.

Still in beta but seems to be working well for me so far. Google gpgmail2 to
learn more.

Thanks

Re: New iMac, A Bit slow and Sluggish

2017-03-23 Thread Scott Granados
You’d think so and I totally agree but I’ve seen the defragmentation on Macs go
totally sideways. It’s supposed to handle this as part of the file system but
doesn’t especially as you mentioned the disk fills. Sounds like we’re on the
same page though.

2017-03-23 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
Yes, fragmentation is a problem not really attributable to the drive
itself. Of course an SSDs don't have a head flitting around to gather up
the random bits of your file from all over the platter so fragmentation
doesn't matter on those. In Linux, and I'm assuming OSX, fragmentation
on spinning disks isn't as much of an issue as the filesystem attempts
to distribute files all over the disk. So if you edit a file and make it
a bit bigger, there should be nearby empty sectors available. Of course
that model breaks down if you're running a nearly full disk.

Let's Use Social Media to Advocate for The Visually Impaired

2017-03-23 Thread M. Taylor

The Gospel According to Mark, Chapter 2017.2.1.1.A. (smile)

Mark

Re: New iMac, A Bit slow and Sluggish

2017-03-23 Thread Scott Granados
The problem is the old fragmentation problem, not to tricky. The files start
getting written in noncontiguous blocks and the more large files you store the
more fragmentation over time you get.

A reformat and reinstall generally clears this up. I don’t mean physical
degradation as much as I mean file system degradation.

Re: printer with voiceover

2017-03-23 Thread Erik Burggraaf
Hi, I liked my samsung. It was a minimalist as far as the onboard
controls were conserned. There was an apple configuration utility that was
more or less accessible and there was a web interface for things like
checking the ink level. It programmed via usb, then connected to the
wireless network.

I really like brother printers. They are substancially cheaper than
samsung and the software is a bit nicer, but the ink is a lot more
expensive unless you know where to look.

HP was really flashing the touch screen interfaces for a while. You need
sighted assistance to get those connected. Once connected though, samsung,
hp, brother, and cannon all have web interfaces that work pretty well and
even let you send faxes or iniciate photo coppies in some cases.

Hope this helps,

Erik

there are tactile clues. Economy is a factor for sure. I'd be grateful for
any suggestions from other voiceover users that use a printer regularly.
Thanks.

Sorting Favorites In Safari

2017-03-23 Thread Brian Hansen
Is there a way to set up a custom sorting of my Safari favorites? I’ve added a
couple of new ones, and they seem to be appearing first when I’m tabbing
through my favorites, and I would like them to appear at the end. Thanks for
all of your help.

printer with voiceover

2017-03-23 Thread Marianne Robbins
My printer is dying and needs to be replaced. I am looking for something that
will work well with a MacBook pro with sierra 10.12.3. (It would also be great
if i could print from iPhone or iPad, but not essential) I use voiceover
screenreader. I need compact size and controls that are not touch-screen
dependent. (Many of the ones I have seen use touchpad without voice.) It would
be great if I could use the keyboard to control it, or if there are tactile
clues. Economy is a factor for sure. I'd be grateful for any suggestions from

Garage Band 10, Quantize a MIDI Track

2017-03-23 Thread 'Jim Fettgather' via MacVisionaries
Hello.

Coming to grips with the latest Garage Band in Sierra, I am wondering if
there is a hotkey to immediately quantize a track after recording it.

I have looked through lists of hotkeys but have not found anything so far.

Thanks for any guidance.

Re: Apple music on android.

2017-03-23 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries

In light of

https://www.macrumors.com/2017/03/22/apple-responds-to-hack-threats/

two-factor auth seems like a really good idea.

On 3/23/17 4:30 AM, Scott Granados wrote:

Anders, you’re intuition is correct. On native apple devices we get a separate
pop up for the 2 factor response in this case the numerical portion of the
response. In your case, you don’t have that specific pop up so you would
respond like this. For our example say that your password is marshmallow and
your response you received on an authorized device from Apple is 555333. In
your password prompt you would put in one group marshmellow555333 which
contains your password and then the two factor response as an appended number.
The authenticator at Apple knows to strip off the last 6 digits and pass them
to the second factoring mechanism and your password goes off to LDAP and the
database for authentication. (Roughly so you get the idea). Let me know if
that helps.

However when i click the login button i get a dialog telling me to type the

THen there is a try again button and i come back to the login screen.
I can not find any where to type the verification code.
So i am wondering if i should type the email in the e-mail field and the

It sounds very odd to me but i want to try apple music out on my android device.

Re: New iMac, A Bit slow and Sluggish

2017-03-23 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
Interesting. I had not heard about spinning disks degrading over time.
I've heard of operating systems getting loaded up with goo from old
files left behind and such, but not the drive. There is the stuff about
drives remapping bad blocks over time, but I wouldn't expect that to
make an impact with all the on-drive caching these days.

What kind of disk are you using, SSD or regular rotating/. Also is this a new
IMAC or a used older model?

Thank you

Hello.
I had tested out the $999 21 inch iMac running Sierra in the Apple Store, and
it had run with impressive speed and responsiveness.
Applications opened quickly, web pages loaded quickly, and there was no lag or "busy

I purchased the unit, and set it up with my Apple ID and iCloud account, there
were a couple of software updates, so the machine restarted twice.

It is not as fast ore responsive as in the Apple store. There are occasional
pauses or delays.

It is interesting, I have a 3 year old MacBook Air that is just as fast as the
day it was purchased.
Yet, this new iMac is not quite running as smoothly as I would have expected,
especially after having seen it running so beautifully in the Apple store.

Any suggestions at all for tweaking this Mac to run as might be expected?
Thanks a lot.

Re: Apple music on android.

2017-03-23 Thread Scott Granados
Let me know if
that helps.

Re: Apple music on android.

2017-03-23 Thread Scott Granados
Ask John Podesta if 2 factor authentication is more trouble than it’s worth.;)

That’s a pretty reckless statement. For we who store things like credit card
numbers, personal files, and so on and so forth do you really just want a
password between you and it? I strongly and I mean strongly suggest everyone
run and don’t walk and enable 2 factor authentication. That’s my opinion
however based on seeing the damage caused by having a single password only with
no really strong protection in place. The codes in 2 factor are very very hard
to guess (almost impossible), in combination with a password you’re even more
secure and even if your password is compromised your account is still safe and
secure behind that second method of authentication.
If you really want to be secure you use some of the hardware based or
application based for we blind users RSA clients that provide nice long strings
that change every minute. The RSA secure client was very accessible and good on
the iPhone and worked well with things like Pulse. Even the 6 digit code stuff
like Google and Apple use though is very very secure.
To be fair, Matthew may be right for the type of data he’s storing. If
for example he doesn’t store financial information or personal files or access
accounts he’s concerned over from that device he well may be right. On the
other hand, if you have any of this content you should really consider it. As
I always say only you can value your data and in our example here possibly
Matthew has a legitimate lack of need if for example the data isn’t of value or
if he keeps things isolated. I use it because I keep documents I want to keep
secure. I also secure the data on the local side as well with encryption so
it’s not an easy target. We really need to be careful about security. Things
that might have slid a few years back are just to dangerous to ignore today as
it really is a different landscape. As always though, the choice is your own
for your own data, value it carefully.

HI Anders

Is there any option under the password to bring a drop down box into focus.

Subject: Apple music on android.

Hi!
I don’t know if its offtopic to ask about this here but if so i appologize and
let me know that so i can ask it on the eyes-free list instead.
I try to login to my apple music account with the apple music app on android.
However when i click the login button i get a dialog telling me to type the
password together with the 2 step verification code sent to my other devices.
THen there is a try again button and i come back to the login screen.
I can not find any where to type the verification code.
So i am wondering if i should type the email in the e-mail field and the
password and the verification code in the password field together?
It sounds very odd to me but i want to try apple music out on my android device.
Thanks in advance for all help.
/A

RE: Changing the writing from left to right, to right to left, and something about footnotes

2017-03-23 Thread Simon Fogarty
Yeah kind of,

I'm writing in English and the words start left to right,
 Like my name "simon",

If your writing right to left would my name still be spelt
"Simon"
Or
"nomis"

That's part of what I don't understand,

And yeah Japanese / Chinese etc write in funny shapes / characters
Amazing caligrophy

English, French, Spanish and many languages are written from left to right, but
some languages like Arabic are written from right to left, others are written
from top to buttomn like Japan Language I think.
but anyway, our way in writing s the same, the screen view is different, but if
you are writing with your hand, "hand writing on Paper." you must perform
writing from right to left in Arabic.

Hi,

Hello,

First, apparently the direction of a paragraph will be the direction of the
language of the first character in the paragraph. So, if you are not mixing
languages in paragraphs you should be in good shape.

In pages, a(at least after I enabled Hebrew), there is a menu item under
format->Text to reverse the direction of the selection. Certainly not as easy
as the keystrokes. I also looked at the keyboard shortcut settings area and
there is no way to redefine the keystrokes to control text direction. So, a
suggestion to the Accessibility folks could be to allow the
control-option-command-arrow keystrokes to be remapped in the language area of
keyboard shortcuts. Otherwise you are stuck with the format menu, or turning
off VoiceOver changing the direction and then turning on VoiceOver.

I even looked to see if I could find a way to adjust this with AppleScript.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Make sure the preference to enable shortcuts is selected for the
language in the Input Sources pane of Keyboard preferences.

◾Change selected text to left to right: Press
Command-Option-Control-Right Arrow.

◾Change selected text to right to left: Press
Command-Option-Control-Left Arrow.

◾Change selected text to the default direction: Press
Command-Option-Control-Down Arrow.
