Re: iOS 11 will stop apps like Uber from constantly tracking your location - CNET

2017-06-21 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Kevin,

If an app has available both GPS always and GPS when active options in IOS 10,
then after GPS is accessed while the app is in the background IOS will bring up
a dialog to allow you to disable background GPS activity. So this is not as
hidden as many of the system options.

Though I doubt most IOS users have any clue how to adjust this setting after
initial query.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Yes, there is a screen reader available within Chrome as well. It's called

2017-06-21 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Actually, Chrome works very well on a Mac. It handles Google Apps services
slightly better than Safari does. It works well with VO, as in things like the
Item Chooser and other web-router items work fairly well in it. I swap back
and forth between the two quite often when certain sites are not behaving
themselves in either browser. Many sighted users in our schools also switch
back and forth when something is not cooperating.

Re: Mac OS Server

2017-06-21 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Normally, you should be able to go to the Purchased tab within the AppStore and
download previous versions of the Server app. The caveat here is that you must
have purchased that app using the same Apple ID. You may not see it yet, but
once you install Mountain Lion or Mavericks on to the MacBook, and log into the
AppStore, that version of Server should still be available to you. Note that I
use the word "should". That's my favourite word when helping people with tech
sorts of things :).

Thanks. I was going to suggest that too, as I use VLC as my primary audio and
video player. I have not used the slow down feature much, though. But, have
used it and know it does slow down speech to an annoyingly slow speed.

Re: Safari Busy

2017-06-21 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I occasionally get this type of error though usually in the web composing
area of twitter or Facebook where there is text input and a completion
list. This is less likely to occur if you don't have mouse follow
VoiceOver enabled and even less likely if you disable tracking altogether
on these sites. If the web developer has mouse events and focus events
that cause content to show and hide in addition to changing the focus for
those items. I can't remember if it was on El Capitan or Sierra but
VoiceOVer certainly got lost when I was trying to post a tweet on the web
using a hashtag. I typed in #N and then could not find a way to complete
the hashtag.

RE: Playing an audio file at a slower pace

2017-06-21 Thread David & his pack of dogs
Thanks. I was going to suggest that too, as I use VLC as my primary audio and
video player. I have not used the slow down feature much, though. But, have
used it and know it does slow down speech to an annoyingly slow speed.

Re: Safari Busy

2017-06-21 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

This sort of thing usually happens either with a large amount of content, or if
there are a lot of live regions that are constantly refreshing themselves. I
don't believe that it is a Safari problem, more of a VO buffer loading concern,
but that's just my thoughts. A couple of tricks that I've used in these
situations is to cmd-tab out of Safari for a few seconds, then cmd-tab back in.
Also, turning off VO, waiting a few seconds, then turning it back on also gets
past these sorts of issues. Even a combination of these two ideas often is
helpful. You could try Google Chrome which is also mostly compatible with VO
and VO commands.

Well, one thing’s for sure. You can forget
www.walmart.com

With the Mac, the site is totally impossible to log in to. You get stuck and
cannot go anywhere.

You actually have to force quit Safari to be able to do anything with it at all

Re: How Apple leapt ahead of Google, Facebook and Microsoft on A R - CNET

2017-06-21 Thread Scott Granados
Nice to see this technology finally taking off. I remember seeing VR and AR
demonstrations years ago using huge silicon graphics work stations or large
clusters of machines but with the new phones and so forth this stuff is
starting to become mainstream. Very interesting, thanks Mark for the article.

Re: Safari Busy

2017-06-21 Thread Alex Hall
Sorry if my message wasn't clear. Pressing cmd-option-shift-ctrl-period is how
you take a diagnostic snapshot on the Mac. After anywhere from two to five
minutes, Finder opens with focus on the compressed file, which is still very
large. You then send this file, along with a description of the problem, to
Apple. You don't need to do this all the time, of course, but I am sometimes
asked for this file when VO is acting in a way that can't be reproduced easily.
I am guessing that, since only some users have Safari problems, diagnostics may
help Apple find the problem.

Re: Playing an audio file at a slower pace

2017-06-21 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Audacity for the Mac can slow down files for you without altering their
pitch. If you install Audacity, be sure to get the version that's screen
reader enabled, which is not the same as the latest version. Check here:

http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Audacity_for_blind_users

There are undoubtedly other tools, especially good command line
tools--though using the Mac terminal is a bit of a challenge with Voice
Over.

I, myself, do this kind of chore using my Linux machine and a tool
called rubberband. I haven't tried porting rubberband to my Airbook with
homebrew, but it might be worth trying that.

BTW: The feature you're asking for should eventually find its way into
standard media players and web browsers. It's a major need for many,
many people in today's world. With all the migration of people's over
recent decades from one country to another, there are millions, arguably
billions of people who live in a country whose language is not their
native language. All these people would benefit if they could, for
example, listen to the news slowed down a bit. And, as you're trying to
do, it would help them learn the language.

FYI: This feature has a name. It's called time scale modification, and
this feature is directly supported in the HTML5 specifications.

Good luck!

Re: Adding carriage returns to text file

2017-06-21 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
There are tools for this task, because it's a common need whichever
platform one is on. Here's a relevant article:

http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20031018164326986

I have not used LineBrake myself, mostly because I generally use the
Unix/Linux dos2unix (or unix2dos) tool which does the same thing.

Here's a bit more info about what this is all about:

Microsoft indicates end of line with a pair of control characters, both
Ctrl-J and Ctrl-M together.

Unix/Linux uses only Ctrl-J

Apple uses Ctrl-M

Ergo: We need a tool that will assist reading our files when we port
them among platforms.

Re: Safari Busy

2017-06-21 Thread Alex Hall
I use Safari. On rare occasions I'll get busy messages that make a page hard to
use, but it's uncommon enough that I don't really worry about it. That said,
I've heard plenty of people say they experience what you do. I have no idea why
this happens to some and not others. All I can suggest is to contact Apple
about it, maybe with some system diagnostic files. When Safari is busy, hit
cmd-option-control-shift-period. After a few minutes, you'll be placed in a
Finder window where you'll find the file you want to send along.

Mac OS Server

I've got an old 2009 / 2010 mac book 13" the old white plastic models I'm
thinking of putting Mac OS Server on to.

I have a server version for either Mt Lion or Mavericks, and I know these OS's
will run on the notebook,
However how would I go about obtaining the server add in for the OS
Is there an apple OS archive somewhere I can access?
As I can't find my old installer file for the server OS package.

I also need more ram and once I get the SSD into it I think it will be great.

Cheers,

CNET News - Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at 8:16 AM

How Apple leapt ahead of Google, Facebook and Microsoft on A - CNET

Augmented or so-called "mixed" reality brings digital objects into the real
world.
GIF by Sean Hollister/CNET
We knew Apple CEO Tim Cook was keenly interested in virtual reality (VR) and
augmented reality (AR). But earlier this month, Apple finally -- and openly
-- revealed its plans to the world.
Apple dedicated a significant portion of its Worldwide Developers Conference
(WWDC) to ambitious new plans to bring VR to your Mac, and A R to your iPad
and iPhone.
Like Facebook, Google and Microsoft -- each of which also showcased A R and VR
plans at recent dev conferences, too -- Apple is now part of a battle for what
the future of computing might look like.
And whether it's transporting you to faraway or imaginary places with VR, or
making virtual objects appear out of thin air with A R , the company suddenly
has skin in the game that it didn't just last month.
Apple's success is still far from guaranteed -- but it already seems like the
company has some key advantages.
Apple didn't reply to requests for comment for this story.
Apple's A R tech works remarkably well
WWDC was the first time Apple publicly demonstrated its A R tech -- and yet,
it may already have the upper hand. Apple's A R Kit doesn't necessarily work
any better than, say, Google's Tango -- but Google requires special phones
bristling with optical sensors.
We totally weren't expecting A R to be anywhere near this good with only the
single camera of an off-the-shelf iPhone:
Overall, Apple's technique seems to do a pretty bang-up job of placing virtual
objects into the real world, without even taking advantage of the second camera
on the iPhone 6S Plus and iPhone 7 Plus. (At WWDC, Apple announced that
developers will soon be able to integrate calculations from that second camera,
too.) Plus, the tech doesn't only work in Apple's demos at WWDC: Developers
who've installed the new iOS 11 preview build on their own iPhones and iPads A
R e uploading YouTube videos that show it works in the varying environments and
lighting conditions of the real world, too.
An A R marketplace that's already millions strong While not every recent
iPhone or iPad will be able to run A R apps, millions upon millions A R e
already eligible -- and presumably, every new iPhone and iPad from here on out.
You can't say the same about Google's A R initiative, which not only has to
convince each Android hardware partners to put a big, presumably costly Tango
sensor module in the back of their phones, but also sell consumers on those
specialized handsets instead of sleeker ones without.
So far, only two Tango phones exist, of which one was a flop, and the other set
to be a Verizon exclusive in the US this summer.
What if Google adopts a simpler, single-camera A R technique too? Android runs
on so many different phones and software revisions that it might be hard to
catch up. It could be even more of a challenge for A R rivals Facebook,
Microsoft and Snapchat, which have to build apps that run on top of iOS and
Android since they don't have popular phones of their own.
Quiet launch buys time

Apple's original iPhone didn't kick off the smartphone: it was predated by the
BlackBerry, the Palm Treo, Windows Phones and other devices.
James Martin/CNET
Despite its reputation as an innovator, Apple has a long history of being
fashionably late to the party. "For us, it's never been about being first to
anything," Cook said in a WWDC interview with Bloomberg.
"We didn't have the first MP3 player. We didn't have the first smartphone.
We didn't have the first tablet," he continued, explaining why the company's
new HomePod smart speaker -- unveiled alongside A R and VR announcements --
was A R riving so long after Amazon's Echo and Google Home. "It's not about
being first. It's about being the best."
In almost all those cases, Apple revealed its products with a flashy
presentation to drum up consumer excitement. The company's move to A R and VR
isn't quite the same; A R and VR A R e being

The time I’ve spent with one of those things is very limited but I found the

You really do need to use it for a day or three. The original keyboards with
the butterfly switches, found on the 2015 Retina MacBooks, were terrible. The
new ones, found on the updated Retina MacBooks and the newer Pros, have a
little more separation between the keys. I find it just enough to tactually
distinguish each key, yet the surface area of the keys is still a little larger
thus making typing easier. I'm writing on the keyboard now, and I just find it
a comfortable, easy experience. But keyboards, like speech synthesizers, are
very subjective. I'd recommend the OP try one out for as long as the store will
let him stay so he can see exactly how it feels.

I'll reiterate my response from that thread, in case the OP of this one didn't
see that one.

I really like the keyboard. It's comfortable after an initial period of
adjustment, and I find it easier to press keys. Moving to an older Mac now
feels like more work than I'm used to having to put into typing. The Touch Bar
is right above the numbers, so you may sometimes touch it by mistake, but I
very rarely do that. Even if I do, the concepts of iOS apply here, so you have
to double tap to activate what you touch. This means that touching something
will speak it, but not activate it. Yes, the trackpad is larger, but I don't
find that to be much of a problem. Well, not much more than in other Macs, I
should say. I've always had the problem of accidental touches doing things,
especially with Trackpad Commander on or VO set to follow the mouse. That's
annoying, but not much more so on this Mac than any other.

Hi there, so others different with me but I don’t like the built in keyboard

screen brightness when I’m typing on the top row of keys. The keyboard is also
very small and your fingers that tend to rest near the touch pad trigger the
touch pad. However, I added a Magic keyboard and mouse and love the wireless
keyboard option. You get the old keys back and with better feel. The
processing power and speed of the new laptops is very very good though.

Thanks Nektarios, I will give it a go. When you say "alt", do you mean option

Re: Adding carriage returns to text file

2017-06-21 Thread Ian Robinson
Hi Tyler,

As well as using search and replace as another lister suggests, you can set
TextEdit to save all files in the Windows format if preferred.

Go into TextEdit Preferences, choose the Open and Save tab, then look at the
settings for Plain Text File Encoding.

Regards.

Re: Latest VoiceDream Reader

2017-06-21 Thread Ian Robinson
Hi Robert,

Yep, same problem here.

If audio is playing, flicking up or down on the Audio Settings button stops the
audio and VoiceOver becomes more and more unresponsive as I try to flick around
the screen. This happened with both an MP3 file and a Daisy book.

After closing Voice Dream in the App Switcher, I opened it up again and the
previous audio file was at zero percent as if it had never been played.

Regards.

How Apple leapt ahead of Google, Facebook and Microsoft on A R - CNET

2017-06-21 Thread M. Taylor

(WWDC) to ambitious new plans to bring VR to your Mac, and A R to your iPad
and iPhone.
Like Facebook, Google and Microsoft -- each of which also showcased A R and
VR plans at recent dev conferences, too -- Apple is now part of a battle for
what the future of computing might look like.
And whether it's transporting you to faraway or imaginary places with VR, or
making virtual objects appear out of thin air with A R , the company
suddenly has skin in the game that it didn't just last month.
Apple's success is still far from guaranteed -- but it already seems like
the company has some key advantages.
Apple didn't reply to requests for comment for this story.
Apple's A R tech works remarkably well
WWDC was the first time Apple publicly demonstrated its A R tech -- and
yet, it may already have the upper hand. Apple's A R Kit doesn't necessarily
work any better than, say, Google's Tango -- but Google requires special
phones bristling with optical sensors.
We totally weren't expecting A R to be anywhere near this good with only
the single camera of an off-the-shelf iPhone:
Overall, Apple's technique seems to do a pretty bang-up job of placing
virtual objects into the real world, without even taking advantage of the
second camera on the iPhone 6S Plus and iPhone 7 Plus. (At WWDC, Apple
announced that developers will soon be able to integrate calculations from
that second camera, too.)
Plus, the tech doesn't only work in Apple's demos at WWDC: Developers who've
installed the new iOS 11 preview build on their own iPhones and iPads A R e
uploading YouTube videos that show it works in the varying environments and
lighting conditions of the real world, too.
An A R marketplace that's already millions strong
While not every recent iPhone or iPad will be able to run A R apps,
millions upon millions A R e already eligible -- and presumably, every new
iPhone and iPad from here on out. You can't say the same about Google's A R
initiative, which not only has to convince each Android hardware partners to
put a big, presumably costly Tango sensor module in the back of their
phones, but also sell consumers on those specialized handsets instead of
sleeker ones without.
So far, only two Tango phones exist, of which one was a flop, and the other
set to be a Verizon exclusive in the US this summer.
What if Google adopts a simpler, single-camera A R technique too? Android
runs on so many different phones and software revisions that it might be
hard to catch up. It could be even more of a challenge for A R rivals
Facebook, Microsoft and Snapchat, which have to build apps that run on top
of iOS and Android since they don't have popular phones of their own.
Quiet launch buys time

Apple's original iPhone didn't kick off the smartphone: it was predated by
the BlackBerry, the Palm Treo, Windows Phones and other devices.
The company's move to A R and
VR isn't quite the same; A R and VR A R e being telegraphed even earlier so
app developers can begin to tinker A R ound with the tech, and so new
hardware and accessories can be lined up without piercing the veil of
secrecy.
That's important, because so far, Apple's demos don't feel like game
changers. An interactive Star Wars VR scene from Lucasfilm's Industrial
Light & Magic division? Cool, but you've been able to download a similar one
for VR-ready Windows PCs for months now. A slightly more realistic Pokemon
Go? Great, but that's so 2016.
And while Apple's A R demo (from Peter Jackson's company Wingnut A R ) was
graphically quite impressive, it wasn't interactive.
But Apple didn't necessarily need to wow right out of the gate. Whether it's
the next iPhone (expected in September) or even a rumored future standalone
set of "Apple Glasses," there A R e still opportunities to deliver Steve
Jobs-level oomph to
