RE: skype nonsense

2019-01-09 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Jean,

I just noticed that your signature line states that you live in Switzerland.
Is this correct?

If so, I'm wondering if there are some regional settings that may be causing
problems with Skype. For example, are you using an English language TTS such
as Alex? If not, try switching to Alex and set your language and region
setting to United States and see what happens.

I believe what you say is true but it isn’t my experience. I tried turning vo
off and on while skype was opened and no change. Then I tried uninstalling
skype and restarting my computer, then installing it again, still no change.
Then I went to the web site and downloaded a fresh copy of the app and
installed that, same thing. I can’t even go to skype preferences or settings to
check the microphone and camera because absolutely every menu item in skype is
dimmed out. When it opens it says skype has no windows and no matter what keys
I press, nothing happens.

Happy for any further suggestions,

Re: Frustrating issue with the Daniel voice, and how do I get rid of it?

2019-01-09 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,

You mention that one place you are hearing Daniel is on system messages. There
is an option in system settings under Dictation and Speech to read system
messages. This willies the default system voice not VoiceOver voices. So this
might be your issue.
Two other possibilities:
1. Perhaps you have a VoiceOVer Activity for Mail
2. If automatic language switching is on and your e-mail messages have
lang=en/gb it is possible that VoiceOver will switch to the British English
voice.

Hi,

Instead of expanding, press cmd-o on the Extreme to "open" it. Normally, this
is just to the left of the Scroll area. Stop interacting with everything, then
navigate around with VO until you hear the Connect As item. VO-space on this,
enter the disk password and you should be connected.

Re: skype nonsense

2019-01-09 Thread Jonathan Cohn
As already mentioned, did you authorize Skype to use your Microphone and
camera? When I first started Skype in Mohave it acted similarly until I went to
the system dialogs that came up and authorized it to use these services.

Newer versions of Skype much like Microsoft Teams, and Slack tend to use HTML
interfaces that are wrapped in a browser like application. The problem with
this is that panes and scrollbars are often not as navigable as in native MacOS
applications. And often these Applications have several panes of information. I
expect that web spots might have with some of these issues, though it is more
difficult to distribute VoiceOver settings to make applications work better
than it is to distribute NVDA plugins or JAWS script files.

And while VoiceOver is scriptable mostly that is just getting current cursor
locations and controlling speech. If you want to move the VoiceOver cursor to
the first table in the third pane, you need to find it using UI Scripting and
then move the mouse appropriately and then move the VO cursor to the mouse.

Re: Frustrating issue with the Daniel voice, and how do I get rid of it?

2019-01-09 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Michael,

Go to Voiceover utility with vo+f8 and choose speech category. In the scroll
area, find the default voice and activate the edit button which allows you to
adjust all possible features of your default voice. If necessary, expand the
dialog as it may be collapsed. You can then go through all the elements
changing them to Alex voice. I’m not at present regularly using Mojave so I
can’t exactly write out the steps but I hope you have enough experience by now
to achieve what you want.
Good luck.

Skype for Business allows you to communicate with Skype users if the account is
configured correctly. I haven't tried it, however.

Are there any MacOS accessibility or access settings that need to be enabled
for Skype to work with VoiceOver?

Also, to the mention of Skype For Business (SFB): I am not aware of SFB being
at least easily usable to replace Skype, as SFB requires a corporate server and
does not, by default usage anyway, link to regular Skype users.
Conversations can be arranged between SFB contacts and Skype contacts, but I
think that requires a bit of special setup for each contact. Corrections
welcome.

Hello Jean,

After reading your post, I opened Skype on my Mac OS Mojave computer. And then
I checked to make certain I have the latest version of Skype.

I've got to tell you that I have absolutely no problems using Skype with
VoiceOver. In fact, just before writing this, I both made and received a call
using Skype. Moreover, the experience on my Mac is almost identical to that of
iOS, which, I might add, I thoroughly enjoy.

Unlike Jason, I do not have a Microsoft 360 account.

Have you turned VoiceOver off and then back on, again after launching Skype?

Also, in some instances, it may be necessary to grant Skype both Microphone and
Camera privileges before it will work as expected.

To make certain that you have granted Skype the necessary permissions, go to
System Preferences/Security/Privacy and check the various devices.

If all else fails, then uninstall Skype, reboot the computer, and then
reinstall it.

Let us know what happens.

Subject: skype nonsense

Hello All:
I made the mistake of updating skype trying to resolve yet another problem it
was causing. Now it is totally nonfunctional. When I open it, it says that
skype has no windows. None of the shortcut keys work except for command 1 which
opens a totally inaccessible web site. Everything in the menus is dimmed out. I
can???t even make the thing quit correctly and have to do a forced quit to
close it. I am using the latest version of Mac OS.
I haven???t heard any complaints about skype for a while so I assumed that it
was behaving itself. Or, maybe everyone has just given up on it, a perfectly
understandable response to be sure.
Any and all ideas welcome including how to get a previous version that will at
least do something productive.

Jean

Frustrating issue with the Daniel voice, and how do I get rid of it?

2019-01-09 Thread Michael Busboom
Hello everyone,

I am having a very difficult time with my Mac constantly switching from Alex,
my preferred English voice, to Daniel. This frequently happens with system
messages, but it also occurs when I am reading my mail. When using German,
this problem does not arise, which is at least good.

What I want is to have Alex speaking English for everything, when I am working
in the English language. I don’t want my MacBook to constantly reverting to
Daniel. What can I do?
Is there perhaps a way to get rid of Daniel altogether?
I am running macOS Mojave, version 10.14.2 and I have a 2016 MacBook Pro.

In my Mac preferences, under VoiceOver, my voice for English is set to Alex.

With thanks in advance for any and all assistance,

Mike
