Re: An old apple keyboard

2020-05-08 Thread Dave Carlson
Here’s another wrinkle. I’m using a Microsoft Natural ergonometric keyboard
with full numbpad on my Mac via a USB cable, no less. I’ve used this same
keyboard type for the past 25 years in my job, and through retirement, on both
my Windows PC and now with my new MacBook Pro. I have one on each computer, and
a spare in case one gives up. It’s so much more comfortable than those flat
keyboards with large pads.

Hi,
We have the Body.  I just weigh myself, the scale is connected
through WiFi, so it logs my weight into the Cloud and as soon as I
open the Health-Mate app the weight is visible.  I’ve set it so that
the Health app can read from Health-Mate and that the Health-Mate
app can write weight data to the Apple Health app, so much of the
time I do my checking in the Apple Health app itself.

Re: to know our Hard disc Health from time to time.

2020-05-08 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
My understanding is that fragmentation doesn’t matter on an SSD: no drive
heads, no rotating platters, and therefore no performance degradation. Of
course, if you still have an old-style hard drive used for purposes other than
backup, there’s a possibility you might have an issue.

Hi,

Most of the time, HD health is not really “testable”. When something fails, it
just does. If a block or sector becomes damaged in some manner, there’s not
really a method by which you can say that it is getting close to becoming
damaged. There are some signs you can note that tell you that the drive is
either terribly fragmented, or maybe that there is problems somewhere on the
disk. These indicators are things like access speed is getting rather slow, or
access to one or more files gives you errors. the best, or most reliable way,
to fix these errors is, in my opinion, to copy the files over to another drive.
As the files move over to the second drive, they are all brought back together
and placed on the new drive in an efficient and methodical manner. Once the
copy is complete, you can format the first drive. The reformat will clean
things up nicely and will also tell you if the it has any errors. There are
more secure, or detailed, methods by which you can perform this wipe which
would give you more information. A regular erase does not actually erase the
entire HD, but you can “zero” everything which would send the print head over
the entire drive, thus giving a good indication of whether or not errors are
detected. Yes, there may be other tools out there, but I don’t believe that
any are really necessary for the vast majority of situations.

Just my opinion, of course.

Re: to know our Hard disc Health from time to time.

2020-05-08 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

The internal drive on a Mac does not need defragmented at all. If it’s an SSD,
then it should never be defragmented anyway. If it’s a spinning drive, then
the MacOS handles disk maintenance on its own and does any cleanup,
defragmentation such things overnight or first thing when the Mac is power up.
For external drives, the safest thing to do is the copy to a second drive
method that I outlined before. Defragging requires a third party app and is a
long, not particularly safe process. Copying to the second drive does the same
thing, is safer, and gives a sort of backup at the same time.

Hi,

Have you tried just using the built-in VNC capabilities of the Mac. If you are
connecting to another machine with remote access enabled, go to the Finder,
press cmd-k or go up to the Go menu and choose Connect to Server, in the
resulting window enter vnc://IP_Address or vnc://Host_Name

malware, but no-one can say that it is perfect, nor would it be responsible to
say that it will always be.

All that being said, I don’t use malware protection software either, and have
no intention of doing so in the foreseeable future. I have never had any
malware on any of my Macs, nor those of my family.

Re: to know our Hard disc Health from time to time.

2020-05-08 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries

Hi,
We have the Body.  I just weigh myself, the scale is connected through
WiFi, so it logs my weight into the Cloud and as soon as I open the
Health-Mate app the weight is visible.  I’ve set it so that the Health
app can read from Health-Mate and that the Health-Mate app can write
weight data to the Apple Health app, so much of the time I do my
checking in the Apple Health app itself.

Re: Giving Apps access and battery life

2020-05-08 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

That’s interesting Anders. It certainly shoulnd’t normally be using that much
juice in that short of time with the use-case you’ve mentioned. I use my XS for
work and personal activities throughout the day and have anywhere from 35% to
less than 10% by bedtime. My XS is also about 18 months old. Try going into
Settings, Battery, swipe through the items on that screen and see if there’s
any indication of what is doing the draining. Usually, it will default to the
last 24 hours. You can swipe through those and down near the bottom of all the
items, it will be able to say what apps or services were affecting battery
life. I would also change it to “Last 10 Days”, and do the same. The info
down at the bottom is even more enlightening when looking at it over the long
term as opposed to the 24 hour period. The XR should have better battery life
than my XS, so this does not sound normal.

 Hi Anders,
The other thing I did that I forgot to mention after I turned off
bluetooth access in lazarillo was to reboot my phone by pressing the
volume up button quickly followed by the volume down button and quickly
followed by holding the side button in until the phone started again.
Turning it off the regular way would probably work just as well but I
usually get better results if I do a reboot that way as well from time to
 time.

Re: Giving Apps access and battery life

2020-05-08 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
I have an iPhone XR which i’ve had for 15 months.
I don’t use it a lot during the day as i am mostly in my home.
I answer phone calls and typing sms.
Other things i do on my other apple devices i have.
Yesterday the phone went from 100% to 27% within 10 hours.
The battery helt claims my phone battery is normal.
I don’t have bluetooth or mobile data on when i don’t need it.
Only wiFi so i can take calls on other devices.

2020-05-08 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I would discourage “less secure mode” unless you know for sure that you are on
a system that is not supported by modern security protocols. For that matter, I
thought these errors were occurring in the Browser and not in Mail.
This is definately a failure of some kind with the SSL handshakes, but it could
be a loss of root certificates (very unlikely), or a badly formed proxy in the
home or local ISP.
If indeed this is a an issue while browsing I would suggest using Google
Chrome or if you have sighted help Firefox I believe both have their own caches
of the root certificate public key. In the current climate of staying at home,
I’m not sure how one could test some kind of Man in the Middle type attack.
Really wish this was the clock problem, that would be easier.

Not surprised, I’m wondering when they will let us back in to our work building

Hi ET,
Have you managed to find a bluetooth thermometer yet? I was surprised that
there was nothing available in the Apple store given the health situation in

but I’m certainly not going to use that on any part of my person.
They do have a contactless thermometer at my work that reads out your

Hello,
Is it possible to set up a Mac with 2 accounts, one for a blind user who needs
VoiceOver always on and the other for a sighted user who wants VoiceOver always
off.
Presumably VoiceOver would need to be on at logon time so that the blind user
could enter the correct user name. If the blind user found that the sighted
user was logged on could they do command+shift+q to log them off and get to the
speaking logon screen? Do any listers share a Mac between sighted and blind
users?
Many thanks for any tips.
Best wishes and keep well … Paul Hopewell

New 13-Inch MacBook Pro Announced With Magic Keyboard, 10th-Gen Processors, Up
to 32GB RAM and 4TB SSD, and
More
Apple this week refreshed its 13-inch MacBook Pro
lineup,
with key features including the same Magic Keyboard as the 16-inch MacBook
Pro, up to 80 percent faster Intel graphics than the previous generation, up to
32GB of RAM, up to 4TB of SSD storage, and 6K display
support.

First introduced on the 16-inch MacBook Pro last year, the Magic Keyboard
features a far more reliable scissor mechanism with 1mm of key travel. After
five years, Apple has finally transitioned its entire notebook lineup away from
its issue-prone butterfly
keyboard.

10th-generation Intel processor options are only available on higher-end
models, with the $1,799 configuration proving to be up to 16.5% faster than the
$1,299 base
model
 with an older 8th-generation processor.

Hi,

Yes, that’s the same screen I get on my XS and my wife’s XR. I have had it on
occasion though focus on the Emergency SOS button instead of the Power Off
button. I usually suggest that people flick left until they hit the wall or
hear “Power Off” before double-tapping. Don’t need to call emergency services
by accident.

I don’t recommend restarting your iPhone using that method unless your ipHone

things a little more harshly than the normal shutdown/power up version.
Consider it like the Mac, in that normally, if you wish to restart, you go to
the Apple menu and select Restart. When the Mac is unresponsive, you can hold
down the power button for about five seconds forcing the Mac to shut down. The
force shutdown can cause open files to get errors and other less desirable
results. Nine times out of ten, nothing bad will come of it, I just don’t
think it’s worth the risk.

Hi,

We have the Body. I just weigh myself, the scale is connected through WiFi, so
it logs my weight into the Cloud and as soon as I open the Health-Mate app the
weight is visible. I’ve set it so that the Health app can read from
Health-Mate and that the Health-Mate app can write weight data to the Apple
Health app, so much of the time I do my checking in the Apple Health app itself.

RE: Endnote

2020-05-08 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Yes in endnote 19 they changed the way the database is written due to the
changes in Catalina.

I think from memory it's end note 19.2.1
But then windows version also changed it's database format also and that was a
slightly different version number.

If you had endnote on your machine before updating to Catalina then endnote
will have created a backup version of your endnote library in the previous db
format as well as writing the new db format for your endnote library.

Hello,

So had to update my version of endnote because had upgraded to Catalina - but
having checked what I said earlier following update.

If you go to the library list and interact with it and then bring up the
context menu you have the option to create a group and then you are able to use
your add process as described.

2020-05-08 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Jessica,

Yeah difficult one.

I’d contact the teacher and get a list of what is meant to be getting worked on
and if they can provide access to the same services that your daughter is using
and that way you can see what work is there and question her on what she is
working on so that you know what the work load is and type of work as well.

Good luck.

That’s something I unfortunately can’t afford to invest in right now, and
something needs to be. Done soon sense Hannah’s grades are really low, and she
has a tendency to lie and say she’s. Doing her work, and sense not all lessons
are live, and therefore not auditory, I need to know exactly what’s on her
screen VS what she claims to be doing.

Hi,

You might wish to look at Chrome Remote Desktop. It’s an extension you can use
with Chrome that may work for you. I’m not sure of how well things will work
from an observation point of view, as most “remote-in” solutions are not
particularly screen reader friendly with respect to reading the others screen
contents.
