VSCode is also a good editor for the terminal.

What app do you use for the terminal? I tried ISH and VoiceOver seems
sluggish. Also, I remember trying Nano with it and had trouble figuring out
where my cursor was using VoiceOver.

Re: Disk Maintenance

2022-08-29 Thread Brett Lewis
Hi,
Just wanted to add a brief description of my recent experience with performance
problems:
I have had pretty sluggish performance for a while on my macbook pro 2020. Not
sure exactly when it started, but has been enough to keep me from using my
system much.
I had some time Friday evening so thought I would investigate.
1. I opened activity monitor and found that powerd was consuming something like
105% of my CPU (Note I had to set the refresh interval on the View menu to the
slowest interval to use the app). Also not sure how you can consume more than
100% but...
2. After some googling, I opened terminal and typed:
pmset -g sched
And found a couple of pending tasks. These looked like perhaps pending email
sends? Not sure exactly.
3. I then did
sudo pmset schedule cancelall

All I can say is wow, a huge performance boost.
I have checked a couple of times since and no longer see powerd in the top
processes.
No idea if this applies to anyone else, just my experience.
Brett

Re: Opening a Contiguous Set of Text Files Into a Single Document

2022-08-25 Thread Brett Lewis
Hi,
Make sure all the txt files are in a folder and in alphabetical order.
Then in the terminal:

- cd to the folder where the txt files are stored
- cat *.txt >> ~/Desktop/combined.txt
- You should now have combined.txt on your desktop.
- Note the path to your desktop is ~/Desktop with a cap D.

HTH

Glad that works.
I have been doing spaces with people involved in assistive technology for the

Always happy to have people join in.

Hi,
The compose tweet button has actions associated with it, so if you select
actions in the rotor and swipe up/down you should find create a new space.
Let me know if that doesn't work for some reason.

Re: Twitter

2022-04-29 Thread Brett Lewis
Hi,
The Twitter app itself is only ok. I listened to a nice review of Spring from
Jonathan Mosen
https://mosen.org/episode-175-if-you-could-only-choose-one-video-streaming-service-which-one-would-you-pick-and-a-review-and-demonstration-of-the-spring-twitter-app-for-apple-devices/
The difficulty with any third-party app is that it will lack some of the
features of the official twitter client. Things like Spaces and Communities may
not be supported.
Happy to offer help with the official Twitter app if you have any questions.

Good morning.
When I have experienced this it is usually because I have inadvertently

I haven't really figured out the difference between the two quick nav
related options: with the left and right arrows and the VO+Q but I would
check VO+Q and hopefully that will help.

Re: 1Password on Mac

2022-03-25 Thread Brett Lewis
Hi,
I have to use 1password for work and I have found that on the Mac,
1password in Chrome is much more consistent.
I tend to use command+\ to invoke it.
Safari is generally just a frustrating experience, when it works with the
arrow keys it is great but it doesn't often work.
Sending them an email is a great idea.

Re: New Screen Reader Users Community on Twitter

2022-03-01 Thread Brett Lewis
Very frustrating.
I checked and I think you won't see the tab if you aren't part of any
communities (I think Twitter is running an experiment on who has access).
If you join a community from an invite (the link I sent or you can direct
message me on Twitter and I will send you an invite) I think you will then
have the Communities tab.
Appreciate you following up on this.

Re: New Screen Reader Users Community on Twitter

2022-02-27 Thread Brett Lewis
Hi Mark,
Spaces is where you can host audio only chats.
Communities is a separate tab.
Not sure why it isn't showing up for you.
Just to cover the obvious, this is on iOS on an iPhone (I have not tried
this on an iPad)?
Do you have the latest version of the twitter app?
Let me see if I can find out why the tab might be missing for you.

Re: New Screen Reader Users Community on Twitter

2022-02-27 Thread Brett Lewis
Hi,
Communities are a pretty new thing on Twitter.
I thought I would create one and see how it goes.
I think the community tweets should show up in your timeline but you probably
should bookmark for easy access.
Having said that, the iOS app has a tab at the bottom of the screen for
communities and I am finding that to be a quick way to access the communities I
belong to.
On the web, communities is under the more item near the top of the page.

the discussion, please join at:

Re: Can anyone recommend a good blood pressure monitor that works with iPhone?

2022-01-10 Thread Brett Lewis
I have the withings blood pressure monitor and it does work.
I can't remember if the setup was accessible but the actual measurement
process provides no feedback. You have to press once to turn on the
monitor, wait a few seconds, press to start the measurement, when it is
done, press the monitor to show the measurement and finally one last time
to send it to the iPhone app.
Also, the design is awkward, it goes only on your left arm and is one
contained unit.
It does look kind of cool because it is a single rechargeable unit via usb
but I always have trouble getting it on my arm.
Just my thoughts.
Having said all that, I do use it and it works.

Re: Google Drive

2021-11-23 Thread Brett Lewis
Hi,
Can you explain a little about what you are trying to do?
I just tried my Google Drive app and things seem ok.
I am running Version: 53.0.8.0 (Intel) of google drive.
I poked around a bit in the settings and didn’t see anything about link copying.
When I open the google drive app from the extras menu I can tab from the
activity tab to notifications and a menu called more options which gives me
access to the preferences.
Is this what you get ?

Hi,
Another option is you can add the screen recognition to the rotor and that way
it’s accessible if it accidentally gets turned on for a particular app.

Re: acccessible sprinkler timer

2021-07-15 Thread Brett Lewis
Hi,
I’ve never use the touchscreen part of the device. I put up on the wall and
connected up all the wires and got it all working.
I did it last summer, so I can’t actually remember if I needed any help
configuring it or not.

When I turned it on this spring, I didn’t have to do anything to connect up the
app just worked.
It also will work with HomeKit, but I tend not to use it that way.
I just added a second program the other day. It works just fine.

Re: I have a VMware fusion question, please read below.

2021-05-10 Thread Brett Lewis
Hi,
I don't know if you figured this out, but there is the snapshots menu item,
which is part of the virtual machine menu.
You have a list of all your saved snapshots which you can delete by using
the shortcut menu on a snapshot and selecting it. The delete button then
should become available and you can delete it.
This process is a little bit inconsistent but does work.
In that dialog there is also an auto protect button which lets you specify
the number of snapshots to keep.
HTH,
Brett

Re: A Question About a Possible Voiceover Utility Setting

2021-04-05 Thread Brett Lewis
Hi,
I think it is under verbosity/text. You can change the announcement of
text to be the character to the right of the caret.
Sadly I have found this to be unreliable. That is, it works some times and
other times it announces the wrong character.
I found it too flakey to use anything but the default.
YMMV.

Hi,
I just installed backup & sync on my MacBook Pro running Big Sur.
Seems to work fine.
Do you have the entry in the extras menu?
There are settings under there for your account and preferences.
I didn’t have to set any preferences in system settings for the install.

Re: VoiceOver and Google Docs

2021-02-18 Thread Brett Lewis
Hi,
I have found docs to mostly be unusable on the Mac.
A couple of things which seem to make it better.
First I use chrome rather than safari.
Second, you can go to tools/accessibility options when in a Google doc and
uncheck the braille mode checkbox. Braille mode is pretty good on Windows
but doesn't work well for me on the Mac.
Hopefully that will help a bit, but for me I had to get a windows machine
to really work with Google Docs.

Voiceover skipping punctuation

2021-02-07 Thread Brett Lewis
Hi All:
Has anyone found a solution for the following:
If I am in something like Text Edit and I have a line of code (in this case
react).

This line actually says (I have inserted spaces to make punctuation speak).

This is with punctuation set to all.
Missing the initial { and . . . is really a problem for coding.
I am hoping someone has a suggestion.
In case it is important, this is with Alex as my syntheisizer.
Thanks in advance.
Brett

Re: What's Behind America's Starlink Obsession? PC Magazine

2021-01-31 Thread Brett Lewis
Hi,
I got a beta invite for this last weekend.
The beta is $99/mo and $499 for the terminal.
You get a beta for that amount and only 150 mbps approximately based on the
speed tests I have seen.
My ISP (Xfinity) is not good but they offer $90/mo for 1 GBPS.
Just my $.02.

Hi,
I can definitely work around the problem (and Braille helps).
Development on Windows was much nicer however.
Unfortunately, that is no longer an option with my current job.

Announcing indentation

2021-01-18 Thread Brett Lewis
Hi All:
I aim hoping I have missed something, but I can’t seem to figure out how to get
Voiceover on the Mac to announce how indented my caret is.
Ideally, there would be a way to get Voiceover to announce the number of spaces
or tabs at the beginning of a line.
Short of that, is there a way to get my current caret position announced?
I am specifically interested in doing this in a code editor (visual studio code
in this case), but any idea would be great.
I have tried setting a web Spot on the control that announces the ln and col
but this fails about half the time.
Any ideas would really be nice.
Brett

Re: Strange focus/reading problems in Safari on my iphone

2021-01-10 Thread Brett Lewis
Hi,
Do you have the screen recognition turned on by any chance?
This is under settings accessibility voiceover and voiceover recognition.
Make sure it’s turned off for safari. I should note you can add it to the rotor
and then turn it on for each app as you move, I just don’t know if it’s part of
your rotor.
Hope that helps.

feature turned on for PayPal? If it is try turning it off.
There is an option under voiceover settings called voiceover recognition.
If you go in there you can see if screen recognition is on and if you click on
that, it will show you for which apps it’s on.

Re: additional voices?

2020-12-30 Thread Brett Lewis
Hi All:
Just a note on voices.
I was taking a programming class for work a couple of weeks ago and I
was using the Tom voice on my mac.
One of the functions we used was
.toSeq
Tom insisted on calling this "to the following" which was really confusing.
I have no idea why the strange pronunciation.
I switched back to Alex and things are less confusing.
Just FYI,
Brett

Hi Karen. Some voices on the Mac are used for novelty purposes.
Bells basically talks, or in this case, sings like a grandfather

you one voice I'm glad they finally let us use on the Mac. We can
now use Siri voices. They added those voices in Catalina and they
can be used in Big Sur as well.

Hi,
This works exactly the same way on the Mac. You just touch the key and it
authenticates. I should note this also works on iPhones.
If they have the NFC chip built-in you can just touch them to the back of the
iPhone and touch your finger and it authenticates.

OpenWRT is the most accessible/flexible option, but the learning curve is steep.
SSH access is wonderful but you need some background to effectively use it.

Re: mac OS big sur: repeating ping sound

2020-11-23 Thread Brett Lewis
Hi,
This happened to me this morning.
My MacBook just started pinging every few seconds.
Pressing VO+F1 twice showed that there was a system dialog about sending a
crash report to Apple.
Sending the report resolved the issue.
Just FYI,
Brett

 Hi,

I don't see the link. Could you maybe paste it into the body of the
 message?

Alternative, you might want to search running processes for an instance
of ping and kill the process id.

The following terminal command may help:

 sudo killall ping

Re: Question for Focus Blue users

2020-11-19 Thread Brett Lewis
Hi All:
I am new to the Mac (I have a new Mac book pro 13).
I have been a long time windows user but for work reasons I need to get
familiar with and productive on a Mac.
This isn’t related to the thread, but just giving some background.
I just tried accessing a BRF file with my new Focus Blue and indeed you get a
message about unable to edit BRF files when you type a letter in a BRf file.
Hope this helps.
Brett
