I am at the genius bar right this mount. They saw the problem and suggested
that when you get the Safari busy, that you hit return. This seemed to work.

Re: Mac VO friendly banks?

2011-08-04 Thread Christopher Peppel
Hi Scott,

I have found that Brookline Bank out of Brookline Mass does indeed work very
well. This is one of the reasons I am staying with them instead of going to a
bank just down the street in the next block even though they have a talking atm
machine. The only problem I have had, is that I'm getting a Safari busy when I
try to log off. I am going up to the Genious Bar tomorrow to have them take a
look. I had the problem just after upgrading to Lion.

Good luck,

Chris

 Chris,
All things being equal, there is no need to remove or change your general
configuration for your mail client just because you are changing Internet
 service providers.

There are some definite exceptions to this, however; for example, were you
to change from a cable provider to a DSL or, in some cases, from one
satellite provider to another. More often than not, the change would
require a modification of your SMTP settings, only.

 I suggest that:

 1.
Before you change providers, go to the web and review the recommended
internet/mail client settings for the new provider. Write these down
somewhere and have them close at hand should any modifications be necessary.

 2.
Immediately after the new provider goes live on your system, attempt to send
and receive messages from all your email accounts.

 Good Luck,

 Mark

Ezzie, here's yet another suggestion: it's possible that you have a bad
sector on your hard drive that prevents your Mac from completing the boot
up. If so, it's still possible to boot your Mac from an alternate drive,
and also access your original disk (any parts that are not damaged), if
you've created bootable clones with either Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!
as part of your backup strategy.

To boot from a backup that's been created as a bootable clone, connect the
drive, then hold down the Option key while you turn on your computer to
start booting. Once the boot process initiates, you press the right (or
left) arrow key and then press the return key to indicate that you want to
switch your boot drive from the default. VoiceOver won't speak until your
system boots up (from your cloned drive), but once it does, you can log in
and take a look at your current hard drive and access or copy files.

I keep a bootable clone of my system's hard drive for emergency recovery
purposes. Generally, I'll make one of these as a backup action before major
system upgrades, so I have a complete, working image of my system before the
upgrade. This type of backup is different from Time Machine backups, which
are more suited to retrieving individual files you were working on a few
weeks ago that might have been deleted. Bootable clones of hard drives are
useful in the case of sudden, catastrophic failures, but they take more time
to make, so you don't create them as frequently. The two popular sources
 are:
 • Bombich Software (for Carbon Copy Cloner, donationware, suggested $15,
 free to educational users)
 http://www.bombich.com/
 • Shirt Pocket (for SuperDuper! $27.95, but free trial download supports
 full cloning feature)
 http://www.shirt-pocket.com/

Both sources of software provide good results, but new users may feel more
comfortable with SuperDuper! whose documentation goes into more details
 about how backups work.

When you put your cd into rip, hopefully vo said something like selection

Then you got the album track listing and you interacted with it!
As Itunes imports each track, it will change to converted, in that list!
After it's finished if you go to your library and find the album there it
 should read as normal!
And the listing where you saw this should have gone!
So this is normal and will happen on all cd's you rip!
As for your not getting those tracks for that well known album see if when
your on that album in the vo+shift+m menu the retrieve track names helps you!
And do you use the LCD window when your importing because that tells you
each track as it imports it!

Re: abby fine reader express question

2011-05-21 Thread Christopher Peppel
Hi Carolyn,

I bought Abbyfinereader $99.00 figuring that it would be an inexpensive way to
scan. It would not work with my scanner which is a Canoscan lide 90. When
Docuscan came along, I deleted the other one and just considered it a bad job.
The problem is that we are given outdated scan engines so as I see it, there is
nothing really out there for us. I can understand people's concerns about
having personal stuff out on the internet and paying $299.00 but I would rather
do that then waste money on a program that doesn't work.

 Hi Chris,

I'm a little confused about what you are trying to do here. I went to the
Cylinder Preservation web site (found with Google), and browsed their web
site. They appear to have tracks stored as mp3 files. Since there is no
right click on the Mac, I assume you are trying to bring up a contextual
menu (VO-Shift-M), or else you just want to directly download the files to
your computer, instead of playing them in your browser. If you want to
download the linked file directly, you can press Option+Return when you are
on the link you want, and you'll automatically force a download without
having to find the option to Save Linked File in your context menu (or
bring up the context menu at all). In this case, it will go to your default
location for Safari Downloads which, if you have not changed the location in
your Safari Preferences, is a folder named Downloads under your home
directory. Depending on how your Mac is set up, you might have a Downloads
folder in your dock, or you can check your Safari Downloads window by
pressing Command-Option-L. If you navigate to the bottom of the window
(VO-Fn-Right Arrow on the laptop), and interact with the group (VO-Shift-Down
Arrow), you can monitor the size and progress of the download, and also
VO-Space on Show in Finder once the Download is complete to bring up a
Finder window with your downloaded file selected. If you want to play the
file without necessarily adding it to your iTunes library, just press space
bar to QuickLook the file, and be able to review the title information tags,
etc. If you just open the file, it will automatically be added to iTunes.
In case you are not sure where the file has been placed in your iTunes Music
library, you can always navigate to the Recently Added smart playlist in
your iTunes sources table, and be able to find all tracks that were added to
iTunes in the last 2 weeks (that are not podcast subscriptions) in
 chronological order.

I don't understand the subject line of Converting files to iTunes. The mp3
format is one of the standard file formats supported in iTunes, and you are
not ripping the file from a CD or other format, nor are you trying to use a
special version of mp3 encoding, such as the LAME encoder, to digitize your
tracks. (Even that's possible in iTunes, incidentally).

Possible things to check: is your mouse cursor on the link you want to
download or view the context menu for (i.e., perform your right click in
your words)? You can do this with VO-F5. I hear VoiceOver speak the number
of the link (for the performer, title, issue source, and year listed),
followed by the words clickable. Your results may depend on how your
cursor tracking is set (e.g., you may have to route your mouse cursor to your
VoiceOver cursor with VO-Command-F5), and whether you are navigating the web
page in DOM mode or group mode. For a very few web pages with idiosyncratic
HTML encoding, the main Blind Cool Tech web page being the prime example, you
may have to interact with the link before you view it in either the context
menu or use Option+Return to download. Note that you may have an easier time
with some of these issues if you use a Magic TrackPad (or TrackPad Commander)
 to navigate.

If you want to set up your Downloads folder in the Dock (provided there is
one in your setup) to be easily viewable in Finder, you can also do that, and
navigate to that folder to check downloads instead. You'd have to use the
context menu (VO-Shift-M) and choose the menu options to display as a
Folder instead of a Stack, and view content as List instead of Fan,
Automatic, or Grid. You could also choose to sort the displayed files by
Date Added instead of Name if you wanted to easily find the latest
download from the dock. Each setting change would have to be applied one by
 one with a separate VO-Shift-M.

 HTH. Cheers,

 Esther

Yes, I just listened to Samantha and Serena. They do sound a little more
artificial then Alex. They have a little burbling sound to them. Not bad, but
I too, like Alex better.

If this means that Alex will be gone, then I'll not be upgrading.
These voices, at least to my ears on just one listen, are a real step
backward from Alex. To be sure, I've so long been listening to Alex
that I've grown accustomed to him, but I don't think that's all there
is to it. I think Alex sounds more nuanced than the Nuance voices.
 Just one man's whining.

Converting files to Itunes

2011-05-17 Thread Christopher Peppel
Hi there,

I was trying to do a right-click to bring up the menu to convert music files to
play in Itunes. It was working, but when I tried to do it the other day,
nothing would happen. If I do Command I, I'm asked if I want to E-Mail the
page which is one of the choices. If there are some files missing for some
reason, and if I run the CD installer, will it replace my whole system or just
add back any possible missing files?

Thanks for any ideas in advance.

functions perform as expected? Do you know if during the setup you may have
inadvertently selected a different keyboard? I doubt this, but this goes
back to whether all other keys function as expected. You are not pressing any
other keys in conjunction with the command key? Sorry, I know this may be an

What kind of keyboard are you using?

On the camera's website is the software Image Express for the Mac. Do you
need to download this first?

Thanks for any help.

Thanks for your help.

Chris, here are a few of my thoughts on this. After you authorized the

what you mean when you say you clicked on a file. Were you trying to record
something from the internet or were you trying to convert a file that was
already on your hard drive? Of course, the way this program works is that
when you click the start button, its little nose sniffs around for media and
tries to capture it, and then when you are done, you click the stop button
and its little nose stops sniffing around for media. One thing that confused
me was that when I tried to capture a Youtube video, a few seconds into the
capture, it made a sound like it was stopping, so I thought maybe I had the
same problem as you, but actually, it did capture the whole thing after all.

I just purchased a license for this program yesterday. I did use a program
called Replay AV on the Windows side made by the same company, but I admit
I've just started working with the Mac equivalent, so I have a few things to
figure out myself, but I was able to successfully record a Youtube video just
 now.

If you go to Sarotalk.com, there is a podcast where there is a demonstration of
the Mac version of Docuscan with the camera done by Rickie Enger. I just
bought the software which is for Serotek customers $199 until the end of April.
The regular price is $299. The camera is $499.00. You can't go wrong with

Top solution for scanning, albeit an expensive one is the eye-pal. It is a
good system. But, the Mac interface is currently being re-built.

The two applications I mentioned run about $150 US, while the eye-pal is I
 think, around $1200.
 Hope this helps a little.

 Hey all listers,
I'm new to the Mac operating system being that I switched from windows after
 I graduated from college.
What made me switch is because of the cost effectiveness in terms of
accessibility out of the box. When I used a PC I used a screen reader called
jaws for windows and these can run from the range of $600 to upgrade and
$1000 to purchase the screen reader + the annual fee which is high in order
to maintain the SMA's. That is separate in addition to the cost of the
hardware itself based on research on the various costs of computers ranging
from 400 to $900 even more for quality computing. Another reason is the fact
that tech support is available for the computer in person and the time and
inconvenience in resolving the various troubles faced when using Jaws and
the added fact that you need sighted assistance which is not granted by
phone. With Apple I can go to the center which is near my house and have all
of my computer problems and even receive training on the accessibility
depending on the knowledge of the person who has experience with its use.
That and many other reasons most of them being financial and personal as
well as the added fact that the state refuses to pay for the upgrade or
purchase of new software to perform the appropriate tasks independently is
the factor that made me consider buying the mac being that I wanted to try
something different. Hence the long story I have questions regarding the use
of braille displays and the mac as well as scanning software that is
accessible for mac users using voiceover.
Does anyone have experience using braille displays with the mac? If so,
which braille display do you use and what is your experiences with its ease
of reading, accessibility etc? Would the braille note be useful a braille
display? Which braille displays are cheaper, the braille note or a
standalone braille display? I have an old braille lite millennium, would
that work with the mac? Because if it does that would be great and I won't
have to deal with the commission refusing to purchase anything and deal with
the stress of fighting them to get what I really need. If not I understand
the need for new equipment which I need for grad school or work anyway.
Based on your experiences, which braille display or notetaker works better
with the mac? Also which scanning program works well with voice over based
 on experience?

 Any advise is appreciated.

 Thank you very much.

Another option to consider is the Btraillino.
I've worked with it only once with a mac and an iPhone. But, it left such a

soon as Handytech NA ships. That is, assuming DVR placed the order on

I've heard no serious complaint about this display, and As erik points out,
displays and preference are pretty arbitrary.
Have fun with your search and check out as many as you can.

Hi Sara,

When I first went to the Apple store, you could feel that they were a little
doubtful as to whether they could do the training or not. Apparently, i
impressed them enough with the little I knew about VO that they were willing to
give it a go. I'm sure they got as much out of the classes as I did. If
nothing else, I hope that I paved the way for some other blind person if they
decide to take classes in the future. By the way, the price couldn't be better
$99.00 for the year, 50 classes.

Magic Track Pad

2011-01-16 Thread Christopher Peppel
Hey Everybody,

I just rejoined the list and it is great to still see a few familiar names
here. I bought a magic track pad and wasn't able to do to much with it. I
tried changing some of the settings to adjust the sensitivity but it didn't
seem to make any difference. So , I am just getting along with the keyboard.

Chris

Hi there,

I think I came rather late to this particular thread, but what game is this and
is it for the Mac?

Thanks.

I finally finished it two nights ago. Personally loved it and can see

the soul trapper type games. I haven't been lucky so far, though.

 Hi, all,

Personally, I loved the game; one of the best I've ever played on any
platform. I still play the levels I like most, or try and see how much I
can play nonstop when I'm on the bus. BTW, for those who don't know, this
is a game for IOS4 on the mobile devices.

 Thanks,
