Re: Apple Home won't connect to new wifi network

2024-09-11 Thread Hai Nguyen Ly
Hi Donna,
Assuming that the original router has been disconnected and the original
network is no longer active, the issue likely has to do with the DHCP using a
different IP address range for the local network on your new modem/router
combo. Some devices will automatically switch, however it sounds like there are
quite a few on your network that won’t until they are power cycled. The last
time I rearranged my local network to use a different IP range, rather than
going around the house and power cycling everything one at a time, I managed to
save some time by doing this from my circuit breaker panel.
Hopefully this resolves the issue for you.

Re: split buttons on the mac

2024-08-07 Thread Hai Nguyen Ly
Good morning,
The only way I’ve managed to reliably activate these types of controls is to do
the following.
1. Use option left/right arrows to move focus to the text associated with the
button you want to click
2. Move mouse focus to the VO cursor by pressing VO+cmd+F5
3. Click the mouse by pressing VO+Shift+Spacebar

I hope this works for you. If there is a specific page you can share with this
type of control, I’d be happy to take a closer look.

Re: Focus Issues since Sonoma Upgrade

2023-10-03 Thread Hai Nguyen Ly
Did you check to see if cursor tracking was inadvertently disabled? If this
setting has not been turned off and you are continuing to experience issues
with cursor focus, I’d recommend backing up and resetting your VoiceOver
preferences to defaults to see if that resolves the problem.

Re: Mail not working on MacBook Pro anymore

2014-02-06 Thread Hai Nguyen Ly
Good afternoon Helena:
Removing the files
com.apple.internetaccounts.plist and
com.apple.mail-shared.plist
from ~/Library/Preferences should resolve your Apple Mail issue. As Shawn
mentioned, you will need to recreate these accounts which should be a pretty
straight forward process.
Good luck.

Re: Hard Drive Space Question

2012-12-19 Thread Hai Nguyen Ly
Morning Emilio:
I too ran in to a similar issue not too long ago when creating a bootable
duplicate drive during an SSD upgrade. It took me a bit of head scratching and
lots of checking to finally figure out that my mail directory and iOS backups
were taking up a lot more space than I could have imagined. My suggestion would
be to check these directories for possible space hogs.
Hope this helps.

Re: question for my fellow fusion users

2012-10-25 Thread Hai Nguyen Ly
Good morning Kliphton:
I've not gotten a chance to run Fusion from a NAS drive, however I have used a
Windows 7 VM running on an SSD as well as an HDD with a a USB enclosure. The
takeaway is: the performance is going to vary depending on your system as well
as the drive. Spinning drives are going to be unbearably slow if you've gotten
used to an SSD. That being said, I did not run in to any degradation issues
using a VM with an SSD. Overall performance was quite snappy.

computing usage has changed drastically. It seems that her specced out 2011
MacBook Pro is spending more time in the case than being used. The
specifications for the device are as follows:
2011 Macbook Pro 13" 8,1, 2.7 intel core i7, 16gb ddr3 RAM 256GB SSD currently
running SnowLeopard, however could ship with 10.8.2.
Asking price: $1200+Shipping. The device is in excellent cosmetic condition
with all original packaging and software. I would prefer payment via Paypal.
Please feel free to contact me directly with any questions.

Best Regards:

Re: iOS sound to mac?

2012-08-06 Thread Hai Nguyen Ly
Alex:
Depending on if your Mac has a Line-in port, you might consider trying out a
free app called LineIn developed by Rogue Amoeba Software. You can download the
app from the following link.
Download Now
Here's a brief description:
"LineIn enables the soft playthrough of audio from input devices. In simpler
terms, you can use LineIn to play sound through a microphone or any other
device plugged in to your Sound In port. If you need to input audio from an
external device, recreating OS 9's "Play input through output device" option,
then LineIn is perfect for you."

Re: Word count in Pages

2012-05-01 Thread Hai Nguyen Ly
Hi Mike:
Since Anne answered all of your questions, I'd like to suggest a work-around
for the first one. While it's possible to find out word count information in
the document inspector, you might find it easier to associate the following
Apple script with a keyboard shortcut. This would allow you to query for the
information without needing to navigate away from the document text area.
I hope this helps.

***
on isVoiceOverRunningWithAppleScript()
set isRunning to true

-- is AppleScript enabled on VoiceOver --
tell application "VoiceOver"
try
set x to bounds of vo cursor
on error
set isRunning to false
end try
end tell
return isRunning
end isVoiceOverRunningWithAppleScript
tell document 1 of application "Pages"
set wordcount to the (count of words) as text
set charactercount to the (count of characters) as text
"delay 0.5"
say wordcount & " words and " & charactercount & " characters"
end tell

FYI: Fix HandBrake DVD ripping if you've installed VLC 2.0

2012-02-24 Thread Hai Nguyen Ly

Fix HandBrake DVD ripping if you've installed VLC 2.0

by Lex Friedman, Macworld.com Feb 24, 2012 11:30 am

[Editor’s note: The MPAA and most media companies argue that you can’t legally
copy or convert commercial DVDs for any reason. We (and others) think that, if
you own a DVD, you should be able to override its copy protection to make a
backup copy or to convert its content for viewing on other devices. Currently,
the law isn’t entirely clear one way or the other. So our advice is: If you
don’t own it, don’t do it. If you do own it, think before you rip.]

We’ve long loved HandBrake, the free, open-source for ripping DVDs. But if
you’ve upgraded to the recently-released VLC Player 2.0, you may have
encountered a HandBrake problem.

If you upgrade to VLC Player 2.0, HandBrake will likely show you this error
when you attempt to rip a DVD.
That’s because HandBrake requires VLC in order to read (and then transcode)
encrypted DVDs—and most DVDs you can buy these days are indeed encrypted. And
the latest version of VLC actually changes which code libraries it uses for DVD
decrypting and playback, meaning HandBrake can no longer take advantage of the
library it’s long depended upon for that purpose. So if you’ve upgraded to VLC
Player 2.0 and attempt to rip a DVD with HandBrake, you’ll encounter an error
message suggesting that you don’t have the right version of VLC installed.

Luckily, there’s an easy fix. First, you could download an older copy of VLC
and rename your newer version, but that’s annoying. The better solution is to
download the missing library directly from VLC. At that link, you can either
download an installer package, which places the library where it belongs, or
download the libdvdcss.2.dylib file directly. If you take the latter option,
you need to move that file to /usr/lib/ on your Mac. The installer does that
for you.

When I ran the installer, however, it locked up after a few seconds, and I
eventually needed to force-quit it. It had in fact installed the library in the
proper place, though, so everything turned out okay.

Once that file’s in the right place, HandBrake will happily start encoding
protected DVDs successfully again, and you can keep on using the latest version
of VLC, too.

Re: setting up keyboard shortcut for opening finder help

2011-12-30 Thread Hai Nguyen Ly
Good afternoon,
You could paste the following in to Apple script and associate the script file
with a keystroke. This would allow you to have just one keystroke to access the
finder window.
I can't remember if this list allows for attachments, so just in case, I've
attached the Apple script file.

The Mac App Directory is Now Live

Posted on December 12, 2011 by David

I'm pleased to announce that you can now submit Mac apps to the AppleVis
website.

The operation and structure of the Mac App Directory is very similar to the
existing directory for iOS apps, and submitting apps is just as quick and easy.

When you visit the Submit Content page, you will now see an additional option
to post to the Mac App Directory. The information required when submitting an
app is mostly the same as for iOS apps, although for now we have chosen to have
only a single rating, the one which indicates the overall usability of the app.
The rating system can be extended at a later stage if necessary.

When submitting a Mac app, please use the available text field to provide
specific accessibility information, particularly anything that you think would
be helpful to other users of the app.

Alerts of new posts to the Mac App Directory will be posted to the AppleVis4Mac
account on Twitter.

There is also a dedicated RSS feed for the Mac App Directory.

The only thing missing right now are some actual Mac apps!

As I have said before, I am not a Mac user. So, if you are, please take just a
few minutes to post some apps and get things started. If nothing else, this
will give me an opportunity to check that everything is working as it should be

Of course, if you do encounter any problems, please be sure to let us know via
the Contact page.

Re: VoiceOver becomes unusable when running script

2011-11-20 Thread Hai Nguyen Ly
Good morning Ray,
My apologies for the delay in responding to your messages. I've been traveling
for most of the weekend with an unreliable internet connection and am just now
getting caught up with emails.
Regarding the script I sent earlier, I'm sorry to hear that it's causing
heartache with VoiceOver. Give me a bit to take a look and get back to you with
a fix. My initial thought is that there is an issue with permissions. Perhaps
it's time to perform another disk maintenance session.
Again, I apologize for the proposed solution causing more trouble than it
resolved. Please know that my intension was of a positive nature and I will do
what I can to track down the issue.

Re: word count in Text Edit? Yep.

2011-11-18 Thread Hai Nguyen Ly
Hi Ray,
All you need to do is to copy and paste the script in to the script source edit
field within a new document using AppleScript Editor and save the script in a
preferred location. Once this has been done, you can use the VO keyboard
commander to create a shortcut key to activate the script.
Hope this helps.

MacBook Pro, AirPort Base Station and Time Capsule firmware updated

2011-11-11 Thread Hai Nguyen Ly

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/11/10/macbook-pro-airport-base-station-and-time-capsule-firmware-upda/

MacBook Pro, AirPort Base Station and Time Capsule firmware updated

Apple has released three new firmware updates all at once. MacBook Pro SMC
Firmware Update 1.5 "resolves an issue where a MacBook Pro being used with a
power adapter may unexpectedly shut down under heavy workload if the battery
charge level is near empty." It's not entirely clear which models of MacBook
Pro are covered by this firmware update; if in doubt, check for it via Software
Update.

Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.9 adds RAW image support to Aperture
3 and iPhoto '11 for 11 new camera models.

AirPort Base Station and Time Capsule Firmware Update 7.6 addresses the most
issues of all the firmware updates Apple's released today. According to Apple,
the update is for all 802.11n AirPort Express, 802.11n AirPort Extreme and Time
Capsules and addresses these issues:

An issue with performance on overlapping wireless networks
An issue with AirPlay audio streaming
An issue with configuring multiple entries for DNS servers
The MacBook Pro and Digital Camera RAW updates can both be found via Software
Update, but the updates for AirPort devices will have to be downloaded via
AirPort Utility.

A Sister’s Eulogy for Steve Jobs - NYTimes.com

2011-10-31 Thread Hai Nguyen Ly

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/30/opinion/mona-simpsons-eulogy-for-steve-jobs.html?_r=1

A Sister’s Eulogy for Steve Jobs

I grew up as an only child, with a single mother. Because we were poor and
because I knew my father had emigrated from Syria, I imagined he looked like
Omar Sharif. I hoped he would be rich and kind and would come into our lives
(and our not yet furnished apartment) and help us. Later, after I’d met my
father, I tried to believe he’d changed his number and left no forwarding
address because he was an idealistic revolutionary, plotting a new world for
the Arab people.

Even as a feminist, my whole life I’d been waiting for a man to love, who could
love me. For decades, I’d thought that man would be my father. When I was 25, I
met that man and he was my brother.

By then, I lived in New York, where I was trying to write my first novel. I had
a job at a small magazine in an office the size of a closet, with three other
aspiring writers. When one day a lawyer called me — me, the middle-class girl
from California who hassled the boss to buy us health insurance — and said his
client was rich and famous and was my long-lost brother, the young editors went
wild. This was 1985 and we worked at a cutting-edge literary magazine, but I’d
fallen into the plot of a Dickens novel and really, we all loved those best.
The lawyer refused to tell me my brother’s name and my colleagues started a
betting pool. The leading candidate: John Travolta. I secretly hoped for a
literary descendant of Henry James — someone more talented than I, someone
brilliant without even trying.

When I met Steve, he was a guy my age in jeans, Arab- or Jewish-looking and
handsomer than Omar Sharif.

We took a long walk — something, it happened, that we both liked to do. I don’t
remember much of what we said that first day, only that he felt like someone
I’d pick to be a friend. He explained that he worked in computers.

I didn’t know much about computers. I still worked on a manual Olivetti
typewriter.

I told Steve I’d recently considered my first purchase of a computer: something
called the Cromemco.

Steve told me it was a good thing I’d waited. He said he was making something
that was going to be insanely beautiful.

I want to tell you a few things I learned from Steve, during three distinct
periods, over the 27 years I knew him. They’re not periods of years, but of
states of being. His full life. His illness. His dying.

Steve worked at what he loved. He worked really hard. Every day.

That’s incredibly simple, but true.

He was the opposite of absent-minded.

He was never embarrassed about working hard, even if the results were failures.
If someone as smart as Steve wasn’t ashamed to admit trying, maybe I didn’t
have to be.

When he got kicked out of Apple, things were painful. He told me about a dinner
at which 500 Silicon Valley leaders met the then-sitting president. Steve
hadn’t been invited.

He was hurt but he still went to work at Next. Every single day.

Novelty was not Steve’s highest value. Beauty was.

For an innovator, Steve was remarkably loyal. If he loved a shirt, he’d order
10 or 100 of them. In the Palo Alto house, there are probably enough black
cotton turtlenecks for everyone in this church.

He didn’t favor trends or gimmicks. He liked people his own age.

His philosophy of aesthetics reminds me of a quote that went something like
this: “Fashion is what seems beautiful now but looks ugly later; art can be
ugly at first but it becomes beautiful later.”

Steve always aspired to make beautiful later.

He was willing to be misunderstood.

Uninvited to the ball, he drove the third or fourth iteration of his same black
sports car to Next, where he and his team were quietly inventing the platform
on which Tim Berners-Lee would write the program for the World Wide Web.

Mona Simpson is a novelist and a professor of English at the University of
California, Los Angeles. She delivered this eulogy for her brother, Steve Jobs,
on Oct. 16 at his memorial service at the Memorial Church of Stanford
University.

Steve was like a girl in the amount of time he spent talking about love. Love
was his supreme virtue, his god of gods. He tracked and worried about the
romantic lives of the people working with him.

Whenever he saw a man he thought a woman might find dashing, he called out,
“Hey are you single? Do you wanna come to dinner with my sister?”

I remember when he phoned the day he met Laurene. “There’s this beautiful woman
and she’s really smart and she has this dog and I’m going to marry her.”

When Reed was born, he began gushing and never stopped. He was a physical dad,
with each of his children. He fretted over Lisa’s boyfriends and Erin’s travel
and skirt lengths and Eve’s safety around the horses she adored.

None of us who attended Reed’s graduation party will ever forget the scene of
Reed and Steve slow dancing.

His abiding love for Laurene sustained h

iOS 5 & iCloud Tips: Sharing an Apple ID With Your Family

2011-10-26 Thread Hai Nguyen Ly

iOS 5 & iCloud Tips: Sharing an Apple ID With Your Family

With the launch of iOS 5 and iCloud on Wednesday, Apple took another huge step
towards the Post-PC era. They have increasingly made the PC less important and
iCloud has meant that it is no longer the ‘hub’ to which your devices sync to –
iCloud is now that hub and importantly, it is all tied to an Apple ID. As many
are realizing as they update to iOS 5 and begin to use iCloud, this can be
somewhat problematic when iCloud is used with the Apple ID that is shared by
their whole family.

Prior to iOS 5, sharing an Apple ID wasn’t really a problem because its main
purpose was for purchasing content on iTunes, using it for support purposes and
purchasing items on the online Apple Store – all tasks that worked fine when
sharing an ID. Now that Apple ID is tied to a bunch of services, a lot of which
involve personal and private data that you don’t necessarily want to share with
others – even family members. The other issue is that iCloud involves a lot of
data synchronization and this doesn’t work well with multiple people as it
results in data conflicts and devices syncing data (such as calendar events)
that are meant for another person in the family.

Fortunately there are a number of ways to resolve these issues, whilst still
benefiting from all of the new iOS 5 and iCloud features. Jump the break to see
all of our tips in dealing with this issue.

Essentially what we want to do is to use multiple Apple IDs on a particular
device, sharing the existing Apple ID for purchases and downloads and creating
a separate one for iCloud and other services – fortunately Apple has made it
fairly easy to do in iOS 5. Within the Settings app, you can tell various
services (e.g. FaceTime) which Apple ID to use – and you can set up a mixture
of Apple IDs (although only 1 per service). In actual fact there are 6 services
in which a different Apple ID can be used: iCloud, FaceTime, iMessage, iTunes
Home Sharing, iTunes (includes App Store and iBookstore) and Game Center.

So this means you can use one Apple ID for iCloud, another for iMessage and
another for iTunes and so on. With that said, here are my top recommendations
for how to deal with sharing an Apple ID and using iOS 5.

1. Use a personal Apple ID for iCloud

This is the most important suggestion I can give you, iCloud includes a number
of new services from syncing mail, calendars, contacts, reminders and bookmarks
to Photo Stream to storing your documents and data for third party apps.

This is my first suggestion because even if you are OK with sharing email and
Photo Stream with others, it will become frustrating to see all of your wife’s
calendar appointments or contacts synced to your iPhone, or when her Pages
documents start appearing on your device.

Negatives

Photo Stream must be tied to your iCloud account, which means if you do decide
to make it personal, you can’t share photos using Photo Stream with others who
have a different iCloud Apple ID associated with their devices. For some this
might be very frustrating.
Only one Apple ID can be used for iCloud, unfortunately this means you can’t
mix and match iCloud services with different IDs (ie. use Photo Stream with ID
#1 and Documents and Data with ID #2). Note there is somewhat of a partial
workaround for this which I have described towards the end of this article.

2. Share an Apple ID for iTunes/App Stores

I would guess the number 1 reason people currently share an Apple ID is so that
they can share Apps, Music, Movies and all the rest of iTunes’ content with
their family without having to purchase it multiple times. This can continue to
happen with iOS 5, and in my opinion it should probably be the only service
which you share an Apple ID across everyone in a family.

Simply sign into the iTunes Store, App Store or iBookstore on all the iOS
devices in your family with this shared Apple ID (preferably the one you have
already been using for purchases – otherwise you’ll lose your previously
purchased content). You can also go to the ‘Store’ section of the Settings app
to ensure the correct Apple ID is being used and to turn Automatic Downloads
on. If you are unaware, Automatic Downloads is a new feature that lets you
purchase content from one of Apple’s stores and have every device automatically
download that content, without any syncing or manual action by the user.

Negatives

Automatic downloads can be a little annoying if one family member is
downloading lots of games when another family member never plays games – it
might be best to turn it off (which you can do on a device-by-device basis),
especially for Apps because they will quickly stack up, cluttering your home
screen with apps you never wanted.
iBookstore can sync bookmarks, and this can also get a little annoying if 2
people are readi

Steve Jobs Biography Reveals He Told Obama, 'You're Headed For A One-Term
Presidency'

In one of the most hotly-anticipated biographies of the year, "Steve Jobs,"
author Walter Isaacson reveals that the Apple CEO offered to design political
ads for President Obama's 2012 campaign despite being highly critical of the
administration's policies and that Jobs refused potentially life-saving surgery
on his pancreatic cancer because he felt it was too invasive. Nine months
later, he got the operation but it was too late.

Those are just some of the tidbits about Jobs' life revealed in the upcoming
biography, a copy of which was obtained by The Huffington Post. The publication
date of the official biography of the notoriously-secretive Apple co-founder
was pushed up after his death in October. "I wanted my kids to know me,"
Isaacson quoted Jobs as saying in their final interview. "I wasn't always there
for them and I wanted them to know why and to understand what I did."

Among other details unearthed in the book on the notoriously-secretive Apple
co-founder:

Jobs' Meeting With Obama

Jobs, who was known for his prickly, stubborn personality, almost missed
meeting President Obama in the fall of 2010 because he insisted that the
president personally ask him for a meeting. Though his wife told him that Obama
"was really psyched to meet with you," Jobs insisted on the personal
invitation, and the standoff lasted for five days. When he finally relented and
they met at the Westin San Francisco Airport, Jobs was characteristically
blunt. He seemed to have transformed from a liberal into a conservative.

"You're headed for a one-term presidency," he told Obama at the start of their
meeting, insisting that the administration needed to be more business-friendly.
As an example, Jobs described the ease with which companies can build factories
in China compared to the United States, where "regulations and unnecessary
costs" make it difficult for them.

Jobs also criticized America's education system, saying it was "crippled by
union work rules," noted Isaacson. "Until the teachers' unions were broken,
there was almost no hope for education reform." Jobs proposed allowing
principals to hire and fire teachers based on merit, that schools stay open
until 6 p.m. and that they be open 11 months a year.

Aiding Obama's Reelection Campaign

Jobs suggested that Obama meet six or seven other CEOs who could express the
needs of innovative businesses -- but when White House aides added more names
to the list, Jobs insisted that it was growing too big and that "he had no
intention of coming." In preparation for the dinner, Jobs exhibited his
notorious attention to detail, telling venture capitalist John Doerr that the
menu of shrimp, cod and lentil salad was "far too fancy" and objecting to a
chocolate truffle dessert. But he was overruled by the White House, which cited
the president's fondness for cream pie.

Though Jobs was not that impressed by Obama, later telling Isaacson that his
focus on the reasons that things can't get done "infuriates" him, they kept in
touch and talked by phone a few more times. Jobs even offered to help create
Obama's political ads for the 2012 campaign. "He had made the same offer in
2008, but he'd become annoyed when Obama's strategist David Axelrod wasn't
totally deferential," writes Isaacson. Jobs later told the author that he
wanted to do for Obama what the legendary "morning in America" ads did for
Ronald Reagan.

Bill Gates And Steve Jobs

Bill Gates was fascinated by Steve Jobs but found him "fundamentally odd" and
"weirdly flawed as a human being," and his tendency to be "either in the mode
of saying you were shit or trying to seduce you."

Jobs once declared about Gates, "He'd be a broader guy if he had dropped acid
once or gone off to an ashram when he was younger."

After 30 years, Gates would develop a grudging respect for Jobs. "He really
never knew much about technology, but he had an amazing instinct for what
works," he said. But Jobs never reciprocated by fully appreciating Gates' real
strengths. "Bill is basically unimaginative and has never invented anything,
which is why I think he's more comfortable now in philanthropy than technology.
He just shamelessly ripped off other people's ideas."

Meeting His Biological Father

Jobs, who was adopted, was a customer at a Mediterranean restaurant north of
San Jose without realizing that it was owned by his biological father -- from
whom he was estranged. He eventually met his real Dad -- "It was amazing," he
later said of the revelation. "I had been to that restaurant a few times, and I
remember meeting the owner. He was Syrian. Balding. We shook hands."

Nevertheless Jobs still had no desire to see him. "I was a wealthy man b

How to Copy Mail's autocomplete database to a new Mac

Copy Mail's autocomplete database to a new Mac

by Lex Friedman, Macworld.com Oct 10, 2011 7:30 am

You’ve just started using a brand-new Mac. You launch Mail.app and start to
compose an email to a friend. That’s when it hits you: You haven't yet sent any
messages on the new machine, so Mail.app hasn't had any addresses to remember,
so it can't autocomplete your friend's address when you begin to type his name.
Drat! Fortunately, as Marco Arment recently blogged, there’s a way to copy
Mail.app’s autocomplete database from your old setup to your new one. (Marco
also happens to be the developer of Macworld favorite Instapaper [].)

On the original Mac—the one that successfully autocompletes email addresses for
you—use the Finder to go to the folder ~/Library/Application
Support/AddressBook/. (If you wish, you can select and copy that path here,
then go back to the Finder, choose Go -> Go To Folder or type Shift-Command-G,
and paste the path.)

In that folder, you’ll see a document called MailRecents-v4.abcdmr. That file
contains the goods! Copy it from your old Mac to your new one through any means
you’d like. (If you want to get particularly meta, you could even email it to
yourself.)

On the new Mac, navigate to that same ~/Library/Application
Support/AddressBook/ folder in the Finder, and drag the file you copied into
it. (Replace the file that's already there if prompted to do so.) When you
relaunch Mail on the new Mac, all of your autocomplete entries should be
restored.

Hi Matthew,
If you are wanting to purchase a new Mac, I would check out:
http://www.powermax.com
They have a form that you can fill out and receive a quote for your used Mac.
This price quote can be used toward the purchase of a new discounted Apple
device. Just one note of caution though, the form does involve a captcha.
One way to avoid the captcha is to give PowerMax a call at:

MagSafe Power Adapters Are Safe with All Mac Laptops | TMO Quick Tip | The Mac Observer

2011-09-30 Thread Hai Nguyen Ly

MagSafe Power Adapters Are Safe with All Mac Laptops

After years of speculation, user reports, and conflicting information, we have
discovered official confirmation from Apple that it is safe to use any wattage
MagSafe power adapter with any MagSafe-equipped laptop.

This 65-watt MagSafe Power Adapter can be used on a 45-watt MacBook Air without
issue.

As discussed on Mac Geek Gab 355, while it may be “safe” to do so, it’s worth
noting that it may not always be effective. A higher wattage adapter will
charge a lower-wattage computer just fine (for example, an 85-watt 15-inch
MacBook Pro adapter used on a 45-watt MacBook Air) but a lower wattage adapter
may not charge a higher wattage laptop (a 45-watt MacBook Air adapter connected
to an 85-watt 15-inch MacBook Pro). In the former situation, the computer will
charge, but will not charge any faster than if the stock adapter is used. In
the latter situation, the adapter will not charge the machine at all while in
use, and will only trickle-charge the machine while asleep.

All of this information and more is available in article HT2346 over at Apple’s
Support Page.

Hi Chris,
the application seems to work a bit better if you have a dvd in the drive. I
managed to successfully extract the audio from a dvd with minimal effort.
Although there are a lot of unlabeled buttons, they all seem to have VoiceOver

Hope this helps.

Re: safari address bar copy url?

2011-08-25 Thread Hai Nguyen Ly
Hello Paul,
When you press command L to move focus to the address bar, all you need to do
from here is press command C if you wish to copy the address to the clipboard
since the text is already highlighted.
Hope this helps.

Rhonda,
Try holding down the VO keys and press F2 twice. This should allow you to arrow

Jeff,
Are you switching to full-screen mode when you are focussed on VMWare? You
should generally need to do this once when you first start your VM.

Hello Jeff,
Since I don't like having to turn off VO everytime I switch to using my VM,
I've found that one can solve the keyboard focus issue by going to Fusion
preferences/general and navigating to the popup button after Games. Activate
this popup button and navigate down to Always optimize mouse for games and you
should be all set.
Hope this helps.

Re: Abisee?

2011-06-06 Thread Hai Nguyen Ly
Hello Donna,
I am a user of DocuScanPlus and I have also used EyePal for Mac with varying
amounts of success. Unfortunately, I can't say that I enjoy using either
solution since they both have tremendous drawbacks. Although DocuScanPlus has
some nice features, it requires an internet connection to really be usable.
EyePal for Mac isn't really a Mac application and doesn't behave like one.
Although it does a good job of processing print text, the UI seemsreally clunky
and inefficient since ABISee is using Wine to create a Windows like environment
to run the application. Overall, I've found the EyePal application to be more
of a memory hog and less stable than what I would expect from such a high
priced solution.
Just my thoughts

How to force your Mac to update its malware definitions - Mac software - Macworld UK

2011-06-03 Thread Hai Nguyen Ly

http://www.macworld.co.uk/macsoftware/news/index.cfm?newsid=3283838&olo=rss

Fri, 03 Jun 2011 How to force your Mac to update its malware definitions

Malware-fearing Mac users have been able to breathe easier since Apple released
Security Update 2011-003 earlier this week. The key elements of the Security
Update were that it successfully detected and removed a couple variants of the
Mac Defender Trojan horse, and also added a daily check for new malware
definitions.

Not even 24 hours later, some malicious folks released a new version of the Mac
Defender Trojan horse into the wild--a variant that Apple's initial update
couldn't detect. The antivirus folk refer to the new incarnation as the "C"
variant.

If you haven't yet installed that Security Update and do so now, you'll
automatically get Apple's up-to-date security definitions, which include the
new C variant of Mac Defender. But if you--like me--installed the update back
on May 31 then your definitions might still be out of date.

Even if you leave the new Security preference to "Automatically update safe
downloads list" checked, your Mac might not have run that check itself yet. And
if you--again, like me--would prefer that your Mac go grab the latest
definitions right this second, it can be done.

First, check to see whether you're already up to date or not. Launch Terminal,
and paste this command:

more
/System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/XProtect.meta.plist

What do you see? At this writing, some folks (with the old definitions) will
see (among some other data) a "last modification date" listed as Thu, 26 May
2011 02:24:41. (If you see any later date, you're more current than this
tutorial, but the instructions below will still help ensure that you have the
latest malware definitions.)

Now, to force your Mac to update, follow these steps:

1. Launch System Preferences

2. Go to the Security preference pane

3. Uncheck the "Automatically update safe downloads list" box

4. Re-check that box.

Ta-da! Now, if all goes well, and you re-run that Terminal command from above,
you'll see that the timestamp has changed. As of this writing, the "last
modification date" should be Wed, 01 Jun 2011 21:19:15 GMT.

You needn't run this command every day; your Mac should automatically update
that list as long as you leave the checkbox checked. But if you want to make
sure you're current because you've heard about new, unpleasant malware on the
loose that might harm your Mac, now you know how to force an update.

Re: Ical help!

2011-02-08 Thread Hai Nguyen
Scott,
I too am experiencing similar issues with using iCal. I've tried reinstalling
iCal from my SnowLeopard disk with no luck. My guess is that there are
corrupted preference files somewhere that need to be trashed. I've been looking
for an answer that doesn't involve a reinstallation of OSX, but it doesn't look
good.

Re: Olympus DS 40 to Mac Help

2011-02-02 Thread Hai Nguyen
Hello Tom,
When you connect the DS40 to your Mac, the device should show up in the finder
as a removeable disk. If you open this drive, you will be able to view the
various folders on the disk. Your files should be under the recorder folder.

Re: basic financial software

2011-01-15 Thread Hai Nguyen
Good morning all,
I've attempted to use See Finance with minimal success with regards to
authenticating to my financial institution: Bank of America. Has anyone else
managed to successfully authenticate and download financial transactions from
said institution? I'm using my online banking login information to authenticate
which works when I use a browser. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Re: Finding out Battery status

2010-12-25 Thread Hai Nguyen
Good evening Courtney,
To compile an Apple script, you will need to copy the script code in the
original message to your clipboard.
Next, navigate to your utilities folder and launch the Apple script editor
utility.
Once the Apple script editor utility opens, navigate to the script source field
within the utility and past the script from the clipboard.
Once the script has been pasted from clipboard, press: command+K to compile the
script.
If the script compiled successfully, VO will announce "Compile," alternatively,
if the script was not copied in its entirety, you will receive potential errors.
Assuming the script compiled successfully, you can save the script to any
location by pressing command+shift+S using the default settings.

Hope this helps.

Re: Finding out Battery status

2010-12-25 Thread Hai Nguyen
Good afternoon AS and others,
Please make sure that you copy the entire script before compiling. If you
receive an error during compilation, this would be due to an incomplete script.
For those of you who do not feel comfortable with compiling scripts, please
download the following file and extract it:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4918985/BatteryStatus.zip
After the file has been extracted, you will need to associate the script with a
shortcut key in the VoiceOver Utility under the keyboard commander tab.
Enjoy

Finding out Battery status

2010-12-23 Thread Hai Nguyen
Good afternoon everyone,
Rather than going through all of the status menus just to find one small piece
of information, in this case, the battery status, I've done the following.
Please compile the following Apple script and associate it with a keyboard
commander shortcut.

Happy Holidays to all and be safe out there.

--Author Hai Nguyen Ly November 28, 2010
(*
This Apple script will querie for the battery status and speak the output. This
script works best when associated with a keyboard shortcut and used in
conjunction with VoiceOver.
*)
on isVoiceOverRunningWithAppleScript()
set isRunning to true

-- is AppleScript enabled on VoiceOver --
tell application "VoiceOver"
try
set x to bounds of vo cursor
on error
set isRunning to false
end try
end tell
return isRunning
end isVoiceOverRunningWithAppleScript

set maxCapacity to do shell script "ioreg -w0 -l | grep \"\\\"MaxCapacity\\\" =
\""
set maxLevel to the last word of maxCapacity
set curCapacity to do shell script "ioreg -w0 -l | grep
\"\\\"CurrentCapacity\\\" = \""
set curLevel to the last word of curCapacity
set battPct to round (100 * curLevel / maxLevel)
set output to "Battery " & battPct & "%"
if isVoiceOverRunningWithAppleScript() then
tell application "VoiceOver"
output "Battery " & battPct & "%"
end tell
else
say "Battery " & battPct & "%"
end if

Good afternoon Erik,
Please let me know if you would be interested in trying out the Mac version of
the software. I've been told by Abisee that the software should be available
for download, however I have not been able to find it. I've since gotten a copy
of the application directly from a representative.

This works, but I also get the following error:
VoiceOver got an error: Connection is invalid.

I also noticed that this method takes longer for VO to restart.

Re: Getting rid of DropBox

2010-11-08 Thread Hai Nguyen
Good afternoon Daniel,
In order to remove the dropbox application, you will need to first stop the
running process, since Dropbox is a service that runs in the background.
To do this, navigate to the utilities folder from the finder by pressing
command+shift+u.
Next, navigate to the activity monitor application and open it.
In activity monitor, navigate to the processes table and start typing in
dropbox. This should highlight the dropbox process in the table.
Vo to the left to the toolbar and interact with the toolbar. Navigate to the
right to the quit process button and press VO space. You should be presented
with a dialog asking you if you really want to quit the process. Once you
confirm this dialog, you should be able to delete the dropbox application from
your machine.

Re: Me and my KNFB Reader Woos

2010-10-01 Thread Hai Nguyen
Good morning VaShaun,
To install the latest version of the Reader, using a Mac, please do the
following.
1. Please navigate with either Safari or Firefox to:
http://www.knfbreader.com
2. Navigate to the "My Reader" link.
3. Navigate to the "new user" link
4. Fill out your information to create a user account and activate the
"register" button once all of the required fields have been filled out.
5. Navigate to the "Software activation" link and enter your trial serial
number in to the necessary field and press the "next" button to proceed.
6. Download the latest version of the knfbReader software, the English language
pack, and the English documentation. All of the files should save to your
Downloads folder in your home directory.
7. Power on your Nokia phone and press the menu key, navigate to applications,
highlight the "Reader" application and press the clear/delete key located above
the number 3. When a message appears asking you to confirm the removal of the
application, please do so by pressing the left selection key.
8. Once the application has been removed from the device, please connect the
device to your Mac using the provided USB cable. When the device has been
connected, a message should appear on the phone screen asking you how you want
to connect. Please navigate to the "Mass storage" item and press Ok.
9. At this point, you should see a new disc drive appear on your finder. Please
navigate to your downloads folder and highlight all three of the files needed
for installing the reader and press command C to copy the items to your
clipboard.
10. Navigate to the mass storage device in your finder and open the disc. Press
command V to paste the installation files on the phone.
Once the files have finished transferring to the device, close the window and
highlight the disc in the finder window and press command E to eject the device.
Disconnect the phone from the computer. and navigate to
applications/office/file manager.

for instructions on how to use the File Manager on your phone. Use the File
Manager on your phone to open the file named knfbReader_v_6_4_0.sis or
kReader_v_6_3_4.sis depending on the product you are installing.
11. After a short time, your phone will ask you if you want to install the
Reader. Press the Left-Select key to say "yes" to this prompt, as well as the
other prompts that will come up. If you only plan to install one language
pack, you can install to the phone memory when prompted where to install (this
is the default), but if you plan to install more than one language pack, you
should change the selection to either "Mass Storage" or "Memory Card".
Continue to press the Left-Select key to confirm the remaining prompt messages.
Once the installation is complete, repeat the installation steps above with
the language pack file that will be the user language, and again for the
on-phone documentation pack. Make sure to install the language and
documentation packs to the same location as the executable, either in the phone
memory, mass storage or memory card, depending on your phone model. Repeat
these steps again for each additional language pack you install, as well as the
documentation pack file.
12. After installing the Mobile Reader and language pack or packs, you must
activate the software. Turn the phone off, and then turn it back on so that
the main screen appears with the time and date. If the bottom left of the
phone screen says "Reader", Talks or Mobile Speak will say "Key 1 Reader", your
phone has been pre-configured to launch the Reader with Left Selection key. If
not, you can configure a shortcut yourself by using the phone's
"Personalization" options; refer to the user manual for your phone model on our
phone information page. The instructions below assume that the shortcut is set
to the Left Selection key.
Open the Reader application by pressing the Left-Select key while on the main
screen and you will be presented with a message asking you to activate the
software. If you do not have this shortcut, press the Menu key and navigate to
the Applications folder. On the 6220 Classic, select the My Own folder within
Applications. Navigate to the Reader icon and press the Select key to open it.
13. The Reader application will ask you to press the Left-Select key, in order
to continue activation. Then, you can press the down button to hear the
software code, and you can have it repeated as many times as you like by
pressing the right directional button. Go back to the web browser on your
computer with the page where you can download the Mobile Reader files (refer to
steps 2,3 and 4). Select the "Next" button at the bottom of this page and then
you will be prompted to enter a software code. Enter the software code from
your Reader into the field on the web page and select the "Finish" button.
14. The web page will provide you with an Activation code which is a string of

Issue with wireless printing using AEBS

Good afternoon all,
I have recently upgraded to an Airport Extreme Base Station and it seems to
meet my needs thus far accept for one issue. Currently, I am forced to connect
a USB printer directly with my MBP as I am unable to get the printer to work
consistently when connected to the AEBS via USB. When the printer is connected
to the USB port on the AEBS, print jobs are mysteriously paused and I am unable
to determine any errors. If I attempt to resume the print job, the document
does not print in its entirety. I've managed to resolve the issue by power
cycling all of my equipment, but haven't managed to trace down any consistent
error as this method does not always work. Any thoughts would be much
appreciated.

Re: ical questions?

2010-08-25 Thread Hai Nguyen
While Mobile Me may fulfill the needs of some, it does not offer the ultimate
solution for all. I have yet to find a way to sync contacts and calendar items
to a Symbian device utilizing Mobile Me, which is the only factor that is
preventing me from obtaining the service. When the light switch works, things
are indeed great, but only if there is a light bulb connected to the socket.

Re: ical questions?

2010-08-24 Thread Hai Nguyen
To add to this thread, I am using iCal with Google Calendar and notice that
when I sync my appointments across devices, the times don't necessarily sync
correctly. For example, I have an appointment on Monday's and Wednesdays from
3:00 PM to 3:50 PM. When I view this appointment on my Nokia devices after I've
used a syncing client called Emose, I notice that the time for my appointment
displays as being from 4:00 PM to 3:50 PM, which doesn't make any sense unless
I traveled backwards through time. Thoughts anyone?

Re: vm fusion sluggishness

2010-08-13 Thread Hai Nguyen
Good morning Sarah
I too am running an XP Pro virtual machine under Fusion and do not notice the
sluggishness you are referring to. It is true that the VM does not run as fast
as a native machine, however I've managed to partially solve some of the issues
by having a faster hard-drive. Occasionally, I notice that performing a disc
and permissions repair seems to help matters. If you really need to utilize
windows in a virtual environment, I would make sure you have configured your VM
to utilize a processor with 2 cores and giving it as much RAM as you can spare.
Hope this helps.

Anyway, you are correct that this application can just be copied and pasted in

Good morning Alfredo,
While I'm happy to hear that you are interested in switching to the Mac as your
device of choice, I would recommend that you take any questions concerning
potential software piracy somewhere else. If you require assistance with
setting up Fusion, I'm sure experienced people on this list would be happy to
assist when possible. I too have utilized Fusion and would be happy to answer
questions when I can. If you are interested in a legal copy of Windows 7,
please feel free to contact me off-list. I'm sure we can negotiate a very
reasonable price regardless of your financial situation.

Good morning,
It's likely that the speech has been accidentally muted. To unmute speech, do
the following:

1. Make sure the trackpad commander is on by holding down the control and
option keys and rotating 2 fingers on the trackpad to the right. The action is
similar to turning a radio dial to the right.
2. double tap the trackpad with three fingers to unmute speech and voiceover

Re: Battery status

2010-04-16 Thread Hai Nguyen
If anyone is interested, I have an apple script that gives battery status
without going through the menus. Please feel free to contact me off-list.

You can navigate to this area in two ways that I'm aware of. You can
either use the VoiceOver command VO M, pressing the M twice while holding down
the control and option keys. The other is a Mac command, control F8. Use VO
plus arrow keys to find what you're looking for.

  Hello,
I got a Macbook a few weeks ago and things are going great. There is one
thing I cant figure out, is there a way to check the battery status. I have had
someone sighted tell me what it is, but I would rather not depend on them to
find that out.
  THanks
