Re: MOderator Note - Please read
Hello all,,, I think it's a shame that Cara has to babysit grown men and women because they act like babies! this takes a lot of energy from Cara who has an illness! this is wrong! I think you should let Carlyn do her part as moderator and give her some teeth! Let her remove trouble-makers or put them on moderator status! This means their posts don't reach the list unless the moderator approves! It's a shame that people need to moderate adults who feel like throwing a temper tantrum! It detracts from those who want to learn. Isaac - Original Message - From: Cara Quinn modelc...@gmail.com To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, July 28, 2011 6:50 PM Subject: MOderator Note - Please read Hi All; Firstly, Mark is due to post a mod note as well today, so I'll let him speak for himself. For myself, I want to first apologize for being away / quiet for several weeks. The last two and a half or so have been taken up with quite the persistent and annoying little illness. So I haven't been keeping touch with the lists much. HOwever, in the short time that I've had today to go through just the scantest few posts, I've already seen enough to warrant this additional mod note. So here goes. Despite some speculations here about the purpose of the list being to drive traffic to blogs or that the mods no longer care about the quality / rules of the lists; let me just say that nothing could be further from the truth, and frankly I'm simply amazed at the level of derision that some listers have begun showing and sharing on this list. -This is a mailing list; moderation teams change and grow all the time on such lists and forums. This is no excuse to start rumors or mistreat eachother. Just because a mod might not be there every single second of every day, doesn't mean that the list guidelines and etiquette go out the window. Now please know, I'm not talking to new listers here, so much when I say this, but really to those of you who have been around here a while, and who ABSOLUTELY know better. If you want to trash the list, the people on it, or the mods, then please, by all means, go right ahead, but for God's sake, do it off the list! lol! Know what I mean? Please seriously have just the slightest bit of courtesy for eachother and for the list itself. If you no longer wish to be here, you know how to leave. But please please please be adults and don't go ruining this valuable resource for others whom may really like it or need it. That's not fair and it's disrespectful in the extreme. Regardless of whether we post list guidelines or not, I'm really talking here about just plain, general, basic good ole' netiquette. Treat others as you would like to be treated. YOu're all smart peeps here! YOu can do this! -KNow what I mean?… :) Now please; I'll be catching up on tons of email, please do treat eachother with courtesy and respect?… I thank you for your time and will get back with you soon. The process is quite simple in the newer Mac Minis that were manufactured beginning in mid 2010, which I assume is what you have purchased. The entire enclosure of the recent Mini is aluminum with the exception of the large round plastic foot that you will feel on the underside of the Mini. This plastic foot is actually a cover that can be removed simply by turning it counter-clockwise and lifting it off of the Mini. Assuming you have washed your hands thoroughly and are now grounded to prevent static electricity from damaging the internal components, you can feel around inside the body of the Mini and you will find the RAM modules. They are stacked on top of each other, so you will only feel one module at first. It is held in place by two metal spring loaded clips, one on each side of each RAM module. You gently expand these two clips and as you do so the RAM module will pop up slightly. You can then gently pull on it to fully remove it from it's socket. While you're doing this, you might want to feel along the edge of the RAM module where it meets the socket in the Mini. This might help you to understand how the RAM module fits into the socket, and you'll need to know this when you attempt to insert your new RAM modules because they can only be inserted correctly facing one direction. Once you've removed the first RAM module you can feel the second RAM module under it. It is removed using the same procedure. Incidentally, RAM prices seem to be dropping at the moment and, in fact, someone on another list posted a note saying that newegg.com has an 8 GB RAM kit on sale today for US $50, but I haven't verified this and I'm not sure if newegg.com is an option in your locale. Re: transition from pc to mac
Hi Joanne, the best way to learn is to just roll up your sleeves and do it on a daily basis! don't put pressure on yourself by setting deadlines and obstacles. Just do it daily. when I wanted to learn MSDOS years ago, I just did it a little bit each day. Before long I was doing nicely. And you will have to do the same. Spend a little time with it each day. Learn the layout of programs. Learn what to do in certain situations. Study how you tot to one point. then try to figure out how to get back to the original point. Just a little at a time each day is the best way to go. All the best! Re: multiple email accounts?
Hello Kliph, You know, you can have a mailbox for each account. For example: I have onne for Verizon, Gmail and Apple mail. So you won't need to worry about which one to answer first. Just go to the different mailboxes and answer all the mail there. You seem to be quite active in your imac. If you're near an Apple store perhaps you would benefit from the one-to-One program. I think you would have a ball and I think you'd learn quickly. You can pearn different programs as you go. You can have as many lessons as you can handle. but it's all dependent upon whether there's an Apple store near you. All the best! Re: Digital Distribution, was Re: macbook pro or macbook air?
Hello Brandt, I have two computers on my desk and one has no floppy drive. there's a n occassional need to transfer a single file between the two units. I use a thumbdrive for this. I use the same thumbdrive to transfer files between my pc and macbook. So I am already using jthis format.. I don't spend a lot of time debating which format to use. I just use what's handy and this is the simplest method at the present. It's certainly cheaper than putting a single file on a cd to transfer it. United States and Canadian Customers who have a BraillIno or EasyBraille with the older module may now have these devices updated to the newer Bluetooth module for $300. If you are not interested in using your BraillIno or EasyBraille with one of the Apple portable devices, the update is not necessary. As always, please feel free to contact Handy Tech North America at: 651-636-5184 or by e-mail at: i...@handytech.us should you have any questions about the Bluetooth update or any of the adaptive technology solutions we offer. Eric, When I connected the bc40 to the ipod touch, the braille keys didn't do a thing. Why is this? the function keys did nothing either. I've done no mapping though. Just trying to learn the display and how it functions when connecte to Apple products. Thanks. Isaac -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. If you do consider mounting an iMac on your wall, here are a couple of things I learned about the process: 1. Regardless of the wall mount you choose, you will need to purchase Apple's VESA mounting adapter kit for the iMac. I think it currently costs around US $30. I used to have Apple's 24 inch LED display and found it pretty simple to remove the existing stand and install the VESA adapter. The adapter kit included the tools necessary to remove the existing stand and attach the VESA adapter. 2. If at a future time you decide to remove the iMac from the wall and put it on a desk, it is pretty simple to remove the VESA adapter and re-install the original imac stand. 3. The current model of the smaller 21.5 inch iMac does not have the same VESA mounting capabilities found in the larger 27 inch iMac model. Apparently it is not possible to remove the existing stand from the 21.5 inch model without performing major warranty-voiding iMac surgery. I think there is a 3rd party vendor who sells a wall mounting kit for the 21.5 inch iMac that works with the existing stand still attached. Re: macbook pro battery.
Hello Nektarios, In pdas and notepooks if you find power management that is where you turn off things that you don't need. Now I don't know the odds of a Macbook. But you'd want to turn off programs that you hardly ever use. There're things that run upon bootup. These are the kind of thing only experienced power users will know. I am not one of those experienced power users, but those are the things you want to look for. good luck! Re: what is garage band?
Hi Chris, It's a musical program that lets you play, create, design music from various instruments. It's how some rock bands get started in music. so in esssence it's all about music and there're a lot of musicians on the list who're Mac users! Many of them are professional musicians so their talk is way, way over my head, but I enjoy reading their messages because I learn something. Isaac - Original Message - From: Chris Westbrook westbch...@gmail.com To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Sent: Saturday, October 30, 2010 3:24 PM Subject: what is garage band? I have been watching the threads with interest and am debating whether to get garage band 11. I am a musician but not a professional one. I see all these different instruments, and I am thinking it would be cool to make tracks that I could improvise with on the flute like my little keyboard had ages ago. I have ilife 10 or whatever the last version was but can't seem to figure anything out. If I select an instrument and check play nothing happens. Not sure what garage band is supposed to do. :)Is there a podcast where I can see someone doing something with garage band so I can get an idea? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: braille embossers?
Hi ERik, Why do you think the Index would be a weak solution? I've no plans just yet to use my VErsabraille duo. Re: Microsoft Office 2011 period
Hello folks, Why are you folks wasting so much valuable time and bandwidth with Microsoft bashing? It doesn't change a thing! Will the moderators have to step in again and say let's get on with Mac issues and stop the Microsoft bashing? Besides, with as much money as Microsoft has, I find it hard to believe that a certain individual can buy them off with a million dollars or even nine million. What's nine million against thirty eight billion? Let's stop the bashing.. A big part of the reason that Microsoft doesn't have native accessibility is the way a subset of the blind community handled accessibility and MS years back. There were a whole series of payoffs and backroom dealings that took place on behalf of some organizations who make money by selling 3rd party tools. Microsoft truth be told wanted to include a screen reader with the OS and make their tools accessible but found again a certain subset protesting on their front door as a result. (because they were paid off by a certain screen reader company founder to do so to the tune of 7 figures) This same subset still writes hit pieces against Apple today because they do not get a cut of the Apple accessibility pie. Don't think I defend Microsoft unconditionally, I generally hate their products and their developers come from the back of the class but in this case at least your anger is a bit misdirected. I won't detail the specifics here because it's only tangentially ontopic and it ruffled a few feathers of folks on this list who benefits from the status quo. Scott That is excellent! thank you for that. I am thinking of doing the ipod touch after I learn itunes. Hi Isaac, Sure first, the Sprint overdrive is about 60 per month. That's pretty reasonable especially if you're in a 4G enabled city. The plan has unlimited 4G service so no cap, 3G is capped at 5GB per month. I commute over an hour each way every day so to me this is valuable time. If you don't travel much and already have broadband you might not be able to justify the cost. I really like the device though and get a lot of milage out of it. As for the IPod, I love the interface. The touch screen is very intuitive to use once you get the hang of it. Tracking of the movements is very good and it is easy to use one handed unlike many phones. With apps like live365, iI-Heart-Radio and many others you can stream all the audio you want in clean stereo audio instead of over the air. I also find I listen to a lot of content not available on the air either because it's treamed only or because it's outside the local area. The only thing I've used my standard radio for recently is listening to John Miller on the Giants radio network.:) My understanding is I can get an MLB app and get the same audio, I assume there's a fee for that. I have not tried this personally but plan on it next year. Things like the web browser are pretty good and most apps are accessible. How's that? Mac question
Hi Esther, Sometimes when I am doing things on the Mac mini it'll say busy. then it'll show a blank line or something. then after I press keys it'll say busy again. What's this with the busy? This morning while I was at the Apple store, I heard there was a guy there who is in accessibility. He started asking me questions, but since I didn't have my equipment setup for this, I just couldn't follow him. I was told that he was in accessibilities. Re: Mac question
Hi Claus, The reason why I disabled Airport is because if I don't it will be searching for a connection and I don't have a connection that it needs to find at home. I have one in class. But when I leave class and go home, I don't want Airport searching for a connection and thus possibly messing up my connection to a wired network. It seems to work better with a wired connection for now until I become a more advanced Apple user. Try disabling Airport and see how your connection goes. the idea to turn off Airport was mine, seconded by my instructor. Re: Isaac off topic
Julie, I understand what you're saying! I just bought another braille display and I am going to try to match it up with a Macbook for a friend of mine. I am going to need to use a usb to serial cable. It's going to cost some money though! Firrst I've got to get the unit repaired. then I have to try matching it up to the Mac with that usb/serial cable. But it's going to be a while cause I've got other stuff on the burner ahead of it. sigh I've never tried this combo before but I've got a feeling it's going to work! This will all be from my shallow pockets. I am hoping to study the ipod touch next! then I'll worry about connectivity afterwards. So I've got so much to do with technology I won't be getting myself that ipod touch for my birthday. Maybe Christmas. I'll keep hoping... But we'd best get back to Macs or Cara will kill us! I enjoyed your post! All the best! At risk of sounding like a advertisement I want to use it off the shelf. A year with my Iphone and playing with my other's computer and I thought it was worth the $$$. Then I bought it on a back to school special as he is taking classes (OK so I will likely help him just in case there is trouble... grin) and they threw in a printer which my other spent the day networking his computer to and a I touch which became the nicest birthday gift I ever gave my sister. I am not a computer person and can use my Mac to do most things. Two months into it I am in a better place than I was in 95 when I returned to undergrad with a PC and a new Windows screen reader. I have a lot to learn and this list has been much help. Isaac - much like a phone a computer is pretty standard these days. I wonder if as access becomes the norm if it will fall under assistive technology as in the Rehab act. Having just completed a job with vocational rehab (and yes vocational does mean employment in Louisiana) I am keenly aware of the pending adjustment. Sorry for the rant - but if I can buy a product that meets my needs without a third party application I will. Now once I land in my new home and new job which will likely have a desk, phone, chair, sofa and PC then I will have to ponder the more serious question of how much do I not want to use a PC at work. My immediate guess is I need the job enough to use whatever screen reader will work with whatever machine they provide. For items like braille displays I hope there will always be some assist. Having worked non profit, profit and government jobs they are an awful lot for me to expect my employer to buy. Hello Isaac, The FN key modifies the actions of the function keys. By default, the Function keys control hardware functions: volume, brightness, etc. VoiceOver uses the function keys for software purposes and having to press the FN key in addition to the VO keys adds an unnecessary level of complication, which is why most of us make the change to the use of the FN key. The FN key is also used on a laptop keyboard with the arrow keys to get the Home, End, Page Up and Page Down functions. Hello Carolyn, Handytech now sells macs and when you buy one, you get their tutorial for Macs. they've developed a dvd that they sell for 470 for their training. they offer workshops as you mentioned. three day workshops on the mac. they seem to be expanding this all over the country. Hi Neil, Correct. If your in an application or web page and someone gives you the physical placement of an item, you can find it on the track pad which gives you the layout similar to what a sighted person sees on the screen. Just like on the iPhone. This leads me into my comment. I don't think moving your hand from a keyboard to a trackpad to a number pad necessarily makes you slower. For example, If I'm in iTunes and I want to reach an item using JFW I might have to tab 4, 5, maybe 6 times. If I know the layout of iTunes on a Mac, I can just touch that location on my track pad. If your in an environment where you have to work side by side with sighted people this can really clear some communication hurdles. I thought just like you when I first made the switch. Why do I have to press 4 keys to accomplish the same task the only took 1 finger with Jaws? And it annoyed me. But then I realized that the number of keys 1 must press doesn't have a direct relationship to speed and or productivity. I also didn't like the concept of interacting with elements. This is before I completely understood it's advantages. Again, I use iTunes as an example. If you have your IOS device hooked up to your windows PC you go to the sources list and arrow down to your device. Same with the Mac. Then, on Windows, you tab and tab and tab. Then when
