RE: Mac Mini Now On Order

2020-03-31 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Tim,

Yeah it always amazed me that the charging port was on the bottom which means
no use when charging,
Mind you great battery life so charge when not using if youc an.

Yet the touch pad and that’s both versions have switchs on the back / charging
ports on the back as well.

Odd but yes very ergodynamic

Simon,

I would guess that it has to do with ergonomics and style. They like to make
sure that there is no unnecessary bulk to their devices. Now, that being said,
it is a huge inconvenience that the charging port is located where it is and
have expressed it to many people I deal with. I have not mentioned it to Apple
though as I'm just a pee-on and my input doesn't mean a heck of a lot. Good
question though :).

Hi,

To add to Brad's info, for the mouse, when bottom up so that you have access to
the charging port, the port would be at six o'clock and the power switch would
be at about 1 o'clock. move the switch up to power on and down to power off.
Similar to the keyboard as Brad explained, the initial pairing of the mouse can
be done by plugging in the charge cable to your Mac.

Re: Mac Mini Now On Order

2020-03-29 Thread Brad Snyder
The bluetooth keyboard is powered by an internal rechargeable battery. A
Lightning to USB-A cable is included with the keyboard for charging, just like
an iPhone. This cable can also be used for initial pairing with the mac mini.
The Lightning port is located dead-center along the top edge of the keyboard.
The little slide switch you feel is used to turn power on/off.

If you purchased a Magic Bluetooth mouse, it also comes with a Lightning to
USB-A cable for charging and initial pairing. The Lightning port on the mouse
is on the bottom side of the mouse. It is hard to find, but it is located a
little forward of center. There may also be a power switch on the mouse, but
I’m not sure where it is. My wife has one of these units, but I don’t use one
myself because I prefer to use a trackpad.

Battery life on both is pretty good. Depending on your use, you may only need
to charge the keyboard and mouse about once a month, of course your mileage may
vary.

Re: Mac Mini Now On Order

2020-03-29 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Thanks, Brad. This is incredibly valuable info to me.

Do you know about powering the bluetooth keyboard? I would imagine
there's some kind of batteries involved, but I can find nothing that
feels like a compartment for them. I feel the tiny little slide switch
on the upper right hand outer corner. But, my Airbook doesn't offer the
keyboard for pairing whichever slide position I have the keyboard switch
in.

Thanks!

Janina

2020-03-28 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Janina,

Im doing the opposite
I'm having to work from home like the rest of new zealdn and as my work
computer is a windows machine I'm still using a mac full keyboard num pad.

I just find the typing better than the dell windows keyboard that I have for
the computer

Thanks, Simon.

This is interesting. Since I'm not looking to type, why not just use the same
USB keyboard I'm happily pecking at right now? Who cares if I remap Windows and
Alt? They'll be Windows and Alt again when I have the KVM switch machines,
right? So why not swap them when the KVM is talking to the Mini? I think this
might be a very useful setup.

So, if that's the case, any reason the Mini can't accept from multiple
keyboards? Could I have both the wireless and a wired keyboard on line and and
functionging? So I could choose whichever suited? I do that with my Linux PC
where I have a USB connect wifi keyboard I use sometimes when sitting on my
porch.

I guess there things we blind folk can do with our computers that sighted folk
wouldn't concieve of, since they're so tied to looking at a monitor somewhere.

Best,

Janina

Re: Mac Mini Now On Order

2020-03-28 Thread Brad Snyder
Janina,

The Mac mini’s power button is on the right rear corner. You should have no
trouble finding it.

I use an older Mac USB keyboard from 2006 on my mini, but my wife has a newer
version on her iMac with the same layout as the newer full-size bluetooth
keyboards.
The Qwerty area is pretty much the same as on your MB Air, with a few
exceptions:
1. The Fn key is relocated to the upper left corner of the “six pack” extended
key area, where the Insert key is normally located.
2. There are 3 keys on either side of the spacebar, so you get a second CTRL
key.
3. the Eject key is located to the right of the F12 key, same as on the MB
Air's keyboard.
4. There are additional F-keys located above the six-pack area and the NumPad
area. I have never found a use for these keys.

You can of course turn on VO’s keyboard help to explore the keyboard.
If you connect the USB keyboard to the Mac mini with the included USB to
Lightning cable, it will automatically pair. Same is true for a bluetooth
mouse.

HTH

Frankly, I have the same question about the Mini itself. I'm wondering
whether I'll guess it's various ports. I imagine I'l get most of them,
but there may still be some uncertainty. For instance, how does one turn
it on?

When I got my Airbook back in 2014 I literally had to call a Mac using
friend to say: "How do you turn this thing on?"

It also took me a bit to figure out how the power supply came apart and
then back together in particular combinations.

Apple builds awesome hardware, but sometimes these details can be
unclear to the uninitiated.

PS: Delivery is scheduled for next Friday, April 3. I've got my fingers
crossed that it will be afternoon. I've medical appointments in the AM
both Thursday and Friday I can't skip.

Best,

Re: Mac Mini Now On Order

2020-03-28 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Thanks, Simon.

This is interesting. Since I'm not looking to type, why not just use the
same USB keyboard I'm happily pecking at right now? Who cares if I remap
Windows and Alt? They'll be Windows and Alt again when I have the KVM
switch machines, right? So why not swap them when the KVM is talking to
the Mini? I think this might be a very useful setup.

So, if that's the case, any reason the Mini can't accept from multiple
keyboards? Could I have both the wireless and a wired keyboard on line
and and functionging? So I could choose whichever suited? I do that with
my Linux PC where I have a USB connect wifi keyboard I use sometimes
when sitting on my porch.

I guess there things we blind folk can do with our computers that
sighted folk wouldn't concieve of, since they're so tied to looking at a
monitor somewhere.

Best,

Janina

Re: Mac Mini Now On Order

2020-03-28 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Hi, Bard:

I got the full ekyboard with numeric keypad. Despite that, it's still
quite compellingly compact.

I'm not sure I know what all the keys are. Do you know of a writeup
somewhere about the physical key layout?

Best,

Janina

You may already know this, but when using a standard “Windows” keyboard on a
Mac, the Windows key will be the COMMAND key, and the ALT key will be the
OPTION key. Other than that little difference, you should get by until your
Apple bluetooth keyboard arrives.

So, tell us what configuration you ordered for your new Mac mini. What
processor, how much RAM and SSD storage did you go for. I’ve been considering
replacing my 2012 mini because the 1TB SATA HD is showing signs that it isn’t
as young as it once was, and is doing weird stuff. Apple lowered the price of
SSD storage options by $200 USD last week, so the overall price went down.
this makes getting a new mini more tempting.

Can I use a standard PC 104-key USB keyboard? I have several of these,

I'm also assuming the old guidance about blind people configuring their

Thanks again for all guidance. It's much appreciated.

RE: Mac Mini Now On Order

2020-03-27 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Really?

Why does it need to think there is a monitor attached?

I’d use a tv with hdmi input

The Mac mini requires that you have a monitor connected to it in order for it
to work. If you either don’t have a monitor, or don’t want to use one, you can
use a DVI to HDMI adapter to fool the Mac mini into thinking a monitor is
connected. These adapters used to be included with a Mac mini, but are no
longer. You must purchase the adapter separately.

Can I use a standard PC 104-key USB keyboard? I have several of these,

Hey, Matthew. I bet you forgot to mention a network connection? Surely
your Mini isn't off the grid?

Just teasing you a little!

PS: My bluetooth keyboard arrived today. What an elegant unit. However,
I may not be comfortable with it as my main board, though I am likely to
pack it for travel on longer trips (when travel is again routine).

Best,

To clarify, you are using a 2018 Mac mini without a monitor. Are you using a
DVI or VGA to HDMI adapter plugged into the HDMI port to simulate the presents
of a monitor?
I have been under the belief that either a monitor must be connected to a Mac
mini, or an adapter must be plugged into the HDMI port to simulate the presents
of a monitor. I have been told this was the case on 2012 and 2014 minis.
Perhaps this is no longer the case with the 2018 model.

Re: Mac Mini Now On Order

2020-03-26 Thread Brad Snyder
Sounds like the requirement that a monitor or video adapter be connected to a
Mac mini may no longer be the case, as Apple has put more of a focus on server
and related implementations for the mini. I would be interested in learning
what you experience.

Sounds like you ordered pretty much the same mini that I have on my list. I
wasn’t planning on spending the money for 64 GB RAM, but may go with 32 GB, and
I wasn’t planning on going with the high speed Giga-bit ethernet port either.
Again, this seems something aimed at server implementations.

I was actually unaware that the standard PC keyboard's Windows key would map to
Command,

all that stuff is builtin! So, thanks for much for this datum.
It's precisely the kind of thing I didn't know.

I was also unaware that the monitor connection is essential. I can cope
with it, but I appreciate knowing not to bother until I can do that. The
pieces I ordered are arriving separately.

Here's what's on order. I went to the higher end because I like my
machines to have long years of service. My typical replacement cycle
seems to be about every 8 years on Linux, and my Airbook is 6 years old.

Here's what's coming:

Also coming is an HDMI cable, the bluetooth keyboard, and a bluetooth
mouse (for my sighted assistants). All that brought the total price
just over $3,300.

I guess the only high-end item I passed on was the 10Gb ethernet port. I
just don't see myself using that anytime in the next few years.

Janina

Re: Mac Mini Now On Order

2020-03-26 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Apropos monitor or not, I note that a number of the high end reviews of
the 2018 Mini, and I think Apple itself talk in terms of some industrial
applications where a stack of Minis provide some kind of aggregate
service.

So, if these Minis are stackable in a server environment, it's highly
unlikely each and every one of them would have a monitor attached.
Things don't work like that in server rooms, imo.

Indeed, having shopped now for KVMs, the higher end of KVM gear supports
8 o 16 units via a rack mountable KVM switch. I guess that's at least a
dummy connection, I suppose.

Re: Mac Mini Now On Order

2020-03-26 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Ah, fascinating.

I expect I will rework my setup to be directly driving at least three,
possibly four separate machines. I expect to put a modern, HDMI enabled
KVM in the path, and I've done shome KVM shopping but haven't ordered
anything yet.

It'll be interesting whether I end up with a PC keyboard or the Mac
bluetooth keyboard as my main work keyboard via the KVM. It appears
there is both Windows and Linux support for using a Mac keyboard. So,
I'll likely play around with each for awahile before settling on
something based on experience.

PS: In addition to the KVM I'm planning to upgrade my hardware audio
mixer. Still investigating good options there.

Best,

Janina

Re: Mac Mini Now On Order

2020-03-25 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Thanks, Brad.

I was actually unaware that the standard PC keyboard's Windows key would map to
Command,
and Alt to Option. My only other Mac to date has been my Airbook where
all that stuff is builtin!

Best,

Janina

Hi!
I can use my old 2011 mac mini with no screen connected.
There is a screen dummy adapter called something like headless screen or
something you can buy.

Re: Mac Mini Now On Order

2020-03-25 Thread Brad Snyder
To clarify, you are using a 2018 Mac mini without a monitor. Are you using a
DVI or VGA to HDMI adapter plugged into the HDMI port to simulate the presents
of a monitor?
I have been under the belief that either a monitor must be connected to a Mac
mini, or an adapter must be plugged into the HDMI port to simulate the presents
of a monitor. I have been told this was the case on 2012 and 2014 minis.
Perhaps this is no longer the case with the 2018 model.

Note that even with a Windows keyboard, you can remap the keys so that Options
and Command are correctly positioned.

Re: Mac Mini Now On Order

2020-03-25 Thread Brad Snyder

Thanks to everyone who responded about the builtin 2018 model
Mac Mini speaker. It seems likely it's sufficiently usable for initial
installation and configuration. I like to keep things as simple as
possible when I bring up a new device for the first time. There's always
the rest of my life with that device for getting more nuanced and full
featured.

So, now that I've ordered my Mini and have an estimated delivery date,
I'm wondering how I will interact with it.

As a blind person, I'm assuming I can skip hooking up a monitor. That's
a nuance for later, imo, for working with sighted colleagues in the home
office.

But, what about input? The only Mac keyboard I have is the one I ordered
with my Mini, and it's bluetooth, unlikely to be delivered before the
Mini itself.

Can I use a standard PC 104-key USB keyboard? I have several of these,
with no extra keys. They're just the basic PC configuration. Will the
Mini work with that, at least through initial configuration? Can I set
my passwords and my network connection that way and worry about my Apple
bluetooth keyboard later?

I'm also assuming the old guidance about blind people configuring their
Apple machine still holds true? "Just wait, and Voice Over will turn
itself on after a time." Is that still so? I've actually only gone
through that process once--abut 6 years ago when I got my Airbook.

Thanks again for all guidance. It's much appreciated.

Best,

Janina

Re: Mac Mini Now On Order

2020-03-25 Thread Brad Snyder
The Mac mini requires that you have a monitor connected to it in order for it
to work. If you either don’t have a monitor, or don’t want to use one, you can
use a DVI to HDMI adapter to fool the Mac mini into thinking a monitor is
connected. These adapters used to be included with a Mac mini, but are no
longer. You must purchase the adapter separately.

You can just turn on VoiceOver with cmd f5 and follow the instructions.
Good luck.
